Abstract:Conway and Doyle have claimed to be able to divide by three. We attempt to replicate their achievement and fail. In the process, we get tangled up in some shoes and socks and forget how to multiply.

Abstract:Paul Erdos claimed that mathematics is not yet ready to settle the 3x+1 conjecture. I agree, but very soon it will be! With the exponential growth of computer-generated mathematics, we (or rather our silicon brethrern) would have a shot at it. Of course, not by number crunching, but by symbol crunching and automatic deduction. In the present article, I taught my computer how to use the brilliant ideas of four human beings (Amal Amleh, Ed Grove, Candy Kent, and Gerry Ladas) to prove two-dimensional analogs of this notorious conjecture. Once programmed (using my Maple package LADAS) it reproduced their ten theorems, and generated 134 new ones, complete with proofs. All by itself! I believe that the proof of the original 3x+1 conjecture would be in the same vein, but one would need a couple of extra human ideas, and better computers.

Abstract:Morley's Theorem about angle trisectors can be viewed as the statement that a certain diagram `exists', meaning that triangles of prescribed shapes meet in a prescribed pattern. This diagram is the case n=3 of a class of diagrams we call `Conway's doughnuts'. These diagrams can be proven to exist using John Smillie's holonomy method, recently championed by Eric Braude: `Guess the shapes; check the holonomy.' For n = 2, 3, 4 the existence of the doughnut happens to be easy to prove because the hole is absent or triangular.

Abstract:In a previous article, we reduced the unsolved problem of the convergence of Collatz sequences, to convergence of Collatz sequences of odd numbers, that are divisible by 3. In this article, we further reduce this set to odd numbers that are congruent to 21 mod 24. We also show that either the Collatz sequence of a given odd number or an equivalent Collatz sequence reverses to a multiple of 3. Moreover, we construct a network composed of Collatz sequences of all odd numbers.

Abstract:In this article, we reduce the unsolved problem of convergence of Collatz sequences to convergence of Collatz sequences of odd numbers that are divisible by 3. We give an elementary proof of the fact that a Collatz sequence does not increase monotonically. We define a unique reverse Collatz sequence and conjecture that this sequence always converges to a multiple of $3$.

Proof of Collatz Conjecture Using Division Sequence

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to prove the Collatz conjecture using a theorem proving system. First, the division sequence is defined as an alignment of the number of times division by 2 is performed in the Collatz operation. Then, the star conversion is defined, which is a mapping from a specific division sequence to a division sequence. Here it is important to map to some division sequence, not which division sequence. The important point is that the finite length of the division sequence does not change before and after the star conversion. In theorem proving system, we considered two parallel methods: main-proof is a claim to a computer proposition that has the same meaning as the Collatz conjecture. Theorem proving support system “Idris” was used. Moreover, we sub-proved that the 12 “extended star conversion” are closed to the “Collatz operation”. Egison’s computer algebra system is used for proof. The results of the two methods achieved the goal of proving the Collatz conjecture using a theorem proving system.

Abstract:We improve the solution of the classical prisoners and drawers riddle, where all prisoners can find their number using the pointer-following strategy, provided that the prisoners can send a spy to inspect all drawers and swap one pair of numbers. In the traditional approach, each prisoner may need to open up to half of the drawers. We show that this strategy is sub-optimal. Remarkably, a single swap allows all $n$ prisoners to find their number by opening only $\frac{n \ln \ln n}{\ln n} (1 + o(1))$ drawers in the worst case. We show that no strategy can do better than that by a factor larger than two. Efficiently constructing such a strategy is harder, but we provide an explicit efficient strategy that requires opening only $O(\frac{n \log \log n}{\log n})$ drawers by each prisoner in the worst case.

Abstract:Divisibility tests are algorithms that can quickly decide if one integer is divisible by another. There are many tests but most are either of the trimming or summing variety. Our goals are to present Zbikowski's family of trimming tests as one test and to unify the trimming and summing tests. We do the latter by showing, first, that the most effective summing tests, due to Khare, can be derived directly from the Zbikowski's test and, second, that the best known summing tests - the binomial tests - can be derived from an adapted form of Zbikowski's tests. We introduce the notion of stacking, the claim that a six year old would always choose 10 pennies over a dime, and use only basic divisibility properties to achieve our goals.

Abstract:Using completely elementary methods, we find all powers of 3 that can be written as the sum of at most twenty-two distinct powers of 2, as well as all powers of 2 that can be written as the sum of at most twenty-five distinct powers of 3. The latter result is connected to a conjecture of Erdős, namely, that 1, 4, and 256 are the only powers of 2 that can be written as a sum of distinct powers of 3. We present this work partly as a reminder that for certain exponential Diophantine equations, elementary techniques based on congruences can yield results that would be difficult or impossible to obtain with more advanced techniques involving, for example, linear forms in logarithms.

Abstract:In this article, we are interested in whether a product of three consecutive integers $a (a+1) (a+2)$ divides another such product $b (b+1) (b+2)$. If this happens, we prove that there is some gaps between them, namely $b \gg \frac{a \log a)^{1/6}}{\log \log a)^{1/3}}$. We also consider other polynomial sequences such as $a^2 (a^2 + l)$ dividing $b^2 (b^2 + l)$ for some fixed integer $l$. Our method is based on effective Liouville-Baker-Feldman theorem.

Abstract:Let $\bar{S}$ denote the set of integers $n$ such that $n!$ cannot be written as a sum of three squares. Let $\bar{S}(n)$ denote $\bar{S} \cap [1, n]$. We establish an exact formula for $\bar{S}(2^k)$ and show that $\bar{S}(n) = 1/8*n + \mathcal{O}(\sqrt{n})$. We also list the lengths of gaps appearing in $\bar{S}$. We make use of the software package Walnut to establish these results.

Abstract:When my brilliant student Thotsaporn "Aek" Thanatipanonda asked me about how many ways can one cover n identical twins, it rang a Bell back to 1981 (see the article). As usual, the method of teaching the computer how to do its own combinatorics, and to use "analysis" (that is really part of discrete math) to enumerate challenging combinatorial objects is even more interesting than the theorems and even the algorithm. Of course, formulas are dead, long live algorithms! But even algorithms are dead, long live meta-algorithms!!

Abstract:Consider the recursive relation generating a new positive integer $n_{\ell +1}$ from the positive integer $n_{\ell }$ according to the following simple rules: if the integer $n_{\ell }$ is odd, $n_{\ell +1}=3n_{\ell }+1$; if the integer $n_{\ell }$ is even, $n_{\ell +1}=n_{\ell }/2$. The so-called Collatz conjecture states that, starting from any positive integer $N$, the recursion characterized by the continued application of these rules ends up in the cycle $4,$ $2,1$. This conjecture is generally believed to be true (on the basis of extensive numerical checks), but it is as yet unproven. In this paper -- based on the assumption that the Collatz conjecture is indeed true -- we present a quite simple extension of it, which entails the possibility to divide all natural numbers into $3$ disjoint classes, to each of which we conjecture -- on the basis of (not very extensive) numerical checks -- $1/3$ of all natural numbers belong; or, somewhat equivalently, to $2$ disjoint classes, to which we conjecture that respectively $1/3$ and $2/3$ of all natural numbers belong.

Abstract:In Ramanujan's Lost Notebook there is an amazing identity that furnishes infinitely many "almost counterexamples" to the cubic Fermat's Last Theorem, with no indication whatsoever how he discovered it. In 1995, Michael Hirschhorn explained, in a brilliant way, how Ramanujan may have done it, based on a certain polynomial identity for a sum of four cubes. Much earlier, Eri Jabotinsky, in an article published in 1946 (in a mathematics journal for teenagers) explained how Ramanujan may have discovered these polynomial identities needed for Hirschhorn's approach. Here we combine these two brilliant ideas (that may or may not have been how Ramanujan did it), automate it, and generalize, by developing an algorithm to solve a large class of cubic diophantine equations. Our interest in this problem was rekindled after reading Amy Alznauer's (b. Andrews) delightful children book "The Boy Who Dreamed of Infinity" (Candlewick Press), 2020, where Ramanujan's identity appears in one of the illustrations.
