Abstract:This paper investigates a variant of the famous "happy numbers" sequence, given by A351327 on the oeis. First of all we'll define this integer sequence, and then we'll show some important results about it; in particular we conjectured that if $k$ is a term of the sequence, then it converges to 1 in a number of steps less or equal to 3. Furthermore it will be possible to find some codes written in Wolfram language in order to compute large terms of the sequence and to support our hypothesis. At the end we'll explore some new conjectures and generalizations about this kind of integer sequence.

Abstract:For non-negative integers $a,b,$ and $n$, let $N(a, b; n)$ be the number of representations of $n$ as a sum of squares with coefficients $1$ or $3$ ($a$ of ones and $b$ of threes). Let $N^*(a,b; n)$ be the number of representations of $n$ as a sum of odd squares with coefficients $1$ or $3$ ($a$ of ones and $b$ of threes). We have that $N^*(a,b;8n+a+3b)$ is the number of representations of $n$ as a sum of triangular numbers with coefficients $1$ or $3$ ($a$ of ones and $b$ of threes). It is known that for $a$ and $b$ satisfying $1\leq a+3b \leq 7$, we have $$ N^*(a,b;8n+a+3b)= \frac{2}{2+{a\choose4}+ab} N(a,b;8n+a+3b) $$ and for $a$ and $b$ satisfying $a+3b=8$, we have $$ N^*(a,b;8n+a+3b) = \frac{2}{2+{a\choose4}+ab} \left( N(a,b;8n+a+3b) - N(a,b; (8n+a+3b)/4) \right). %& t(8,0;{n}) = \frac{1}{36} \left( N(8,0;8n+8) - N(8,0;2n+2) \right). \label{eq31_5} $$ Such identities are not known for $a+3b>8$. In this paper, for general $a$ and $b$ with $a+b$ even, we prove asymptotic equivalence of formulas similar to the above, as $n\rightarrow\infty$. One of our main results extends a theorem of Bateman, Datskovsky, and Knopp where the case $b=0$ and general $a$ was considered. Our approach is different from Bateman-Datskovsky-Knopp's proof where the circle method and singular series were used. We achieve our results by explicitly computing the Eisenstein components of the generating functions of $N^*(a,b;8n+a+3b)$ and $N(a,b;8n+a+3b)$. The method we use is robust and can be adapted in studying the asymptotics of other representation numbers with general coefficients.

Abstract:We find an interesting relationship between the golden ratio, the Moebius function, the Euler totient function and the natural logarithm - central players in the theory of numbers. A number of identities involving the golden ratio and its reciprocal are proved, including an expression for the base of the natural logarithm. The theorem and corollaries highlight a connection between the golden ratio and the factorization of integers that is not obvious; and display a sort of inverse relationship between the Moebius function and Euler totient function.

Abstract:For m = 3, 4, …, the polygonal numbers of order m are given by p m (n) = (m − 2)( 2 n ) + n (n = 0, 1, 2, …). For positive integers a, b, c and i, j, k ⩾ 3 with max{i, j, k} ⩾ 5, we call the triple (ap i , bp j , cp k ) universal if for any n = 0, 1, 2, …, there are nonnegative integers x, y, z such that n = ap i (x) + bp j (y) + cp k (z). We show that there are only 95 candidates for universal triples (two of which are (p 4, p 5, p 6) and (p 3, p 4, p 27)), and conjecture that they are indeed universal triples. For many triples (ap i , bp j , cp k ) (including (p 3, 4p 4, p 5), (p 4, p 5, p 6) and (p 4, p 4, p 5)), we prove that any nonnegative integer can be written in the form ap i (x) + bp j (y) + cp k (z) with x, y, z ∈ ℤ. We also show some related new results on ternary quadratic forms, one of which states that any nonnegative integer n ≡ 1 (mod 6) can be written in the form x 2 + 3y 2 + 24z 2 with x, y, z ∈ ℤ. In addition, we pose several related conjectures one of which states that for any m = 3, 4, … each natural number can be expressed as p m+1(x 1) + p m+2(x 2) + p m+3(x 3) + r with x 1, x 2, x 3 ∈ {0, 1, 2, …} and r ∈ {0, …, m − 3}.

Abstract:Practical numbers are positive integers $n$ such that every positive integer less than or equal to $n$ can be written as a sum of distinct positive divisors of $n$. In this paper, we show that all positive integers can be written as a sum of a practical number and a triangular number, resolving a conjecture by Sun. We also show that all sufficiently large natural numbers can be written as a sum of a practical number and two $s$-gonal numbers.

Abstract:In 1997 K. Ono and K. Soundararajan [Invent. Math. 130(1997)] proved that under the generalized Riemann hypothesis any positive odd integer greater than 2719 can be represented by the famous Ramanujan form x(2) + y(2) + 10z(2); equivalently the form 2x(2) + 5y(2) + 4T(z) represents all integers greater than 1359, where T(z) denotes the triangular number z(z + 1)/2. Given positive integers a, b, c we employ modular forms and the theory of quadratic forms to determine completely when the general form ax(2) + by(2) + cT(z) represents sufficiently large integers and to establish similar results for the forms ax(2) + bT(y) + cT(z) and aT(x) + bT(y) + cT(z). Here are some consequences of our main theorems: (i) All sufficiently large odd numbers have the form 2ax(2) + y(2) + z(2) if and only if all prime divisors of a are congruent to 1 modulo (ii) The form ax(2) + y(2) + T(z) is almost universal (i.e., it represents sufficiently large integers) if and only if each odd prime divisor of a is congruent to 1 or 3 modulo 8. (iii) ax(2) + T(y) + T(z) is almost universal if and only if all odd prime divisors of a are congruent to 1 modulo 4. (iv) When v(2)(a) not equal 3, the form aT(x) + T(y) + T(z) is almost universal if and only if all odd prime divisors of a are congruent to 1 modulo 4 and v(2)(a) not equal 5, 7,..., where v(2)(a) is the 2-adic order of a.

Abstract:The ternary Goldbach conjecture, or three-primes problem, states that every odd number $n$ greater than $5$ can be written as the sum of three primes. The conjecture, posed in 1742, remained unsolved until now, in spite of great progress in the twentieth century. In 2013 -- following a line of research pioneered and developed by Hardy, Littlewood and Vinogradov, among others -- the author proved the conjecture. In this, as in many other additive problems, what is at issue is really the proper usage of the limited information we possess on the distribution of prime numbers. The problem serves as a test and whetting-stone for techniques in analysis and number theory -- and also as an incentive to think about the relations between existing techniques with greater clarity. We will go over the main ideas of the proof. The basic approach is based on the circle method, the large sieve and exponential sums. For the purposes of this overview, we will not need to work with explicit constants; however, we will discuss what makes certain strategies and procedures not just effective, but efficient, in the sense of leading to good constants. Still, our focus will be on qualitative improvements.

Abstract:We study whether sufficiently large integers can be written in the form cp+T_x, where p is either zero or a prime congruent to r mod d, and T_x=x(x+1)/2 is a triangular number. We also investigate whether there are infinitely many positive integers not of the form (2^ap-r)/m+T_x with p a prime and x an integer. Besides two theorems, the paper also contains several conjectures together with related analysis and numerical data. One of our conjectures states that each natural number not equal to 216 can be written in the form p+T_x with x an integer and p a prime or zero; another conjecture asserts that any odd integer n>3 can be written in the form p+x(x+1) with p a prime and x a positive integer.

Abstract:Let $n,d$, and $k$ be positive integers where $n$ and $d$ are coprime. Our two main results are Theorem 1. There is a partition of the infinite interval $[kd,\infty)$ of positive integers into a family of finite sets $X$ for which the sum of the reciprocals of the elements in $X$ is $n/d$. Theorem 1. There is a partition of $[2kd,\infty)$ into an infinite family of infinite sets $Y$ for which the sum of the reciprocals of the elements in $Y$ is $n/d$. Our method is grounded in the Vital Identity, $1/z = 1/(z+1) + 1/z(z+1)$, which holds for every complex number $z \notin \{-1,0\}$, and which gives rise to an eponymous algorithm that serves as our tool. At the core of our Theorems 1 and 2 is the number theoretic function $\star: x\mapsto \star x := x(x+1)$ into whose properties this paper continues an investigation initiated in [7].

Abstract:Given a set of integers $A$ and an integer $k$, write $A+k\cdot A$ for the set $\{a+kb:a\in A,b\in A\}$. Hanson and Petridis showed that if $|A+A|\le K|A|$ then $|A+2\cdot A|\le K^{2.95}|A|$. At a presentation of this result, Petridis stated that the highest known value for $\frac{\log(|A+2\cdot A|/|A|)}{\log(|A+A|/|A|)}$ (bounded above by 2.95) was $\frac{\log 4}{\log 3}$. We show that, for all $\epsilon>0$, there exist $A$ and $K$ with $|A+A|\le K|A|$ but with $|A+2\cdot A|\ge K^{2-\epsilon}|A|$. Further, we analyse a method of Ruzsa, and generalise it to give continuous analogues of the sizes of sumsets, differences and dilates. We apply this method to a construction of Hennecart, Robert and Yudin to prove that, for all $\epsilon>0$, there exists a set $A$ with $|A-A|\ge |A|^{2-\epsilon}$ but with $|A+A|<|A|^{1.7354+\epsilon}$. Abstract:In this paper, we extend recent work of the third author and Ziegler on triples of integers $(a,b,c)$, with the property that each of $(a,b,c)$, $(a+1,b+1,c+1)$ and $(a+2,b+2,c+2)$ is multiplicatively dependent, completely classifying such triples in case $a=2$. Our techniques include a variety of elementary arguments together with more involved machinery from Diophantine approximation.

Abstract:For an arbitrary integer $x$, an integer of the form $T(x)\!=\!\frac{x^2+x}{2}$ is called a triangular number. Let $\alpha_1,\dots,\alpha_k$ be positive integers. A sum $\Delta_{\alpha_1,\dots,\alpha_k}(x_1,\dots,x_k)=\alpha_1 T(x_1)+\cdots+\alpha_k T(x_k)$ of triangular numbers is said to be even universal if the Diophantine equation $\Delta_{\alpha_1,\dots,\alpha_k}(x_1,\dots,x_k)=2n$ has an integer solution $(x_1,\dots,x_k)\in\mathbb{Z}^k$ for any nonnegative integer $n$. In this article, we classify all even universal sums of triangular numbers. Furthermore, we provide an effective criterion on even universality of an arbitrary sum of triangular numbers, which is a generalization of the triangular theorem of eight of Bosma and Kane.

Abstract:It is well-known that pythagorean triples can be represented by points of the unit circle with rational coordinates. These points form an abelian group, and we describe its structure. This structural description yields, almost immediately, an enumeration of the normalized pythagorean triples with a given hypotenuse, and also to an effective method for producing all such triples. This effective method seems to be new. This paper is intended for the general mathematical audience, including undergraduate mathematics students, and therefore it contains plenty of background material, some history and several examples and exercises.

Abstract:Following will be regard the potentiality of order of numbers for the ternary Goldbach conjecture, where he claimed that “every number... is an aggregate of three prime numbers”. The order of numbers illustrates the possible combinations of prime numbers for the generation of all natural (integer) numbers. Two ways to fragment a natural number in a sum of prime numbers are represented. The ternary conjecture of Goldbach can be confirmed at this way. A binary addition is also possible and demands that one summand be a product with a prime number.
