Abstract:John Conway proved that every audioactive sequence (a.k.a. look-and-say) decays into a compound of 94~elements, a statement he termed the cosmological theorem. The underlying audioactive process can be modeled by a finite-state machine, mapping one sequence of integers to another. Leveraging automata theory, we propose a new proof of Conway's theorem based on a few simple machines, using a computer to compose and minimize them.

Abstract:Matthew Baker investigated, in previous work, an elegant, infinite-length game that may be used to study subsets of real numbers. We present two accessible examples of how an important technique from set theory, or a different technique from infinite game theory, may be used to answer Baker's question on whether this game provides a precise characterization for countable subsets of real numbers, and we connect this game to the well-studied Banach-Mazur game from topology.

Abstract:Ascent sequences have received a lot of attention in recent years in connection with (2 + 2)-free posets and other combinatorial objects. Here, we first show bijectively that analogous repetition sequences are counted by the Bell numbers, and 021-avoiding repetition sequences by the Catalan numbers. Then we adapt a bijection of Chen et al and use it along with the "symbolic" method of Flajolet to find the 4-variable generating function for 021-avoiding ascent sequences by length, number of 0's, number of isolated 0's, and number of runs of 2 or more 0's. We deduce that 021-avoiding ascent sequences that have no consecutive 0's (resp. no isolated 0's) both satisfy a Catalan-like recurrence, differing only in initial conditions, and give a bijective proof for the case of no consecutive 0's. Lastly, we show that 021-avoiding descent sequences are equinumerous with same-size $UUDU$-avoiding Dyck paths.

Abstract:The proper class of Conway's surreal numbers forms a rich totally ordered algebraically closed field with many arithmetic and algebraic properties close to those of real numbers, the ordinals, and infinitesimal numbers. In this paper, we formalize the construction of Conway's numbers in Mizar using two approaches and propose a bridge between them, aiming to combine their advantages for efficient formalization. By replacing transfinite induction-recursion with transfinite induction, we streamline their construction. Additionally, we introduce a method to merge proofs from both approaches using global choice, facilitating formal proof. We demonstrate that surreal numbers form a field, including the square root, and that they encompass subsets such as reals, ordinals, and powers of $\omega$. We combined Conway's work with Ehrlich's generalization to formally prove Conway's Normal Form, paving the way for many formal developments in surreal number theory.

Abstract:The celebrated Thue-Morse sequence, or the Prouhet-Thue-Morse sequence (A010060 in the OEIS), has a number of interesting properties and is a rich source to many (counter)examples. We introduce two different square-free sequences on three letters with one of them is equivalent (up-to permutations of letters) to Thue's original square-free sequence on three letters. Then we use them to introduce an explicit method to construct infinitely many number of recurrent points in ${\{0,1\}^{\mathbb{N}}}$ whose orbit closures under the shift map is minimal, uncountable, and for any two distinct such points their orbit closures are disjoint.

Abstract:The proper Class $\bf{No}$ of all Conway's numbers $\cite{l3}$ is considered as a region of investigation. It turns out to be a total ordered Field (i.e., a field whose domain is a proper Class) and this totally, or linear ordered Class, containing the real numbers ${\mathbb R}$ and the ordinal numbers {\bf On}. For any subfield $F$ of $\bf{No}$, i.e., $F$ is a set nor proper class, considered with topology induced by a linear ordering on $F$ a completion $\tilde F$ is constructed; in particular, for $\zeta=\omega^{\omega^\mu}$, $0\leq\mu<\Omega$, and for a specially defined subfield $F={\mathbb P}_\zeta\subset{\bf No}$ a complete subfield ${\mathbb R}_\zeta\subset{\bf No}$ is defined as $\tilde {\mathbb P}_\zeta$. Fundamental (Cauchy) sequences $(x_\alpha)_{0\leq\alpha<\zeta}$ are considered in a subfield $F\subset {\mathbb P}_\zeta\subset{\bf No}$, where $\zeta$ is the smallest ordinal number which does not belong to $F$, and they are the main instrument in the paper. A fragment of Mathematical Analysis in ${\mathbb R}_\zeta$ is given and two of its non-trivial results are presented: every positive number $x\in{\mathbb R}_\zeta$ has a unique $n$-th root in ${\mathbb R}_\zeta$, for each positive integer $n$ and every odd-degree polynomial with coefficients in ${\mathbb R}_\zeta$ has a root in ${\mathbb R}_\zeta$. Hence so-called fundamental theorem of algebra: the ring ${\mathbb R}_\zeta[i]\stackrel{def}{=}{\mathbb C}_\zeta$ of all numbers of the form $x+iy$ ($x,y\in{\mathbb R}_\zeta$), $i^2=-1$, is an algebraically closed field.

Abstract:In a previous article, we reduced the unsolved problem of the convergence of Collatz sequences, to convergence of Collatz sequences of odd numbers, that are divisible by 3. In this article, we further reduce this set to odd numbers that are congruent to 21 mod 24. We also show that either the Collatz sequence of a given odd number or an equivalent Collatz sequence reverses to a multiple of 3. Moreover, we construct a network composed of Collatz sequences of all odd numbers.

Abstract:We present four different constructions of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences, and use them to obtain expressions for the enumeration sequences of 22 distinct open cases. This completes the enumeration of inversion sequences avoiding one or two patterns of length 3. Some of our constructions are based on generating trees. Others involve pattern-avoiding words, which we also count using generating trees. Furthermore, we introduce a generalization of inversion sequences, which we call shifted inversion sequences. It is sometimes easier to construct pattern-avoiding inversion sequences by seeing them as a particular case of shifted inversion sequences.

Abstract:Analogously to de Bruijn sequences, Orientable sequences have application in automatic position-location applications and, until recently, studies of these sequences focused on the binary case. In recent work by Alhakim et al., recursive methods of construction were described for orientable sequences over arbitrary finite alphabets, requiring 'starter sequences' with special properties. Some of these methods required as input special orientable sequences, i.e. orientable sequences which were simultaneously negative orientable. We exhibit methods for constructing special orientable sequences with properties appropriate for use in two of the recursive methods of Alhakim et al. As a result we are able to show how to construct special orientable sequences for arbitrary sizes of alphabet (larger than a small lower bound) and for all window sizes. These sequences have periods asymptotic to the optimal as the alphabet size increases.

Abstract:This article presents proof that the reverse of the Prefer Max De Bruijn sequence can be expanded into an infinite De Bruijn sequence by increasing the size of the alphabet. Furthermore, we show that every De Bruijn sequence possessing this characteristic exhibits behavior similar to that of the reverse of the Prefer Max De Bruijn sequence.

Abstract:The comma sequence (1, 12, 35, 94, ...) is the lexicographically earliest sequence such that the difference of consecutive terms equals the concatenation of the digits on either side of the comma separating them. The behavior of a "generalized comma sequence" depends on the base the numbers are written in, as well as the sequence's initial values. We provide a computational proof that all comma sequences in bases 3 through 633 are finite. Relying on a combinatorial conjecture, Angelini et al. estimated that the final element of a comma sequence in base b should be roughly exp(O(b)). We prove their conjecture, but provide evidence that the correct estimate is actually exp(O(b log b)).

Abstract:We define a new class of ternary sequences that are 2-balanced. These sequences are obtained by colouring of Sturmian sequences. We show that the class contains sequences of any given letter frequencies. We provide an upper bound on factor and abelian complexity of these sequences. Using the interpretation by rectangle exchange transformation, we prove that for almost all triples of letter frequencies, the upper bound on factor and abelian complexity is reached. The bound on factor complexity is given using a number-theoretical function which we compute explicitly for a class of parameters.

Abstract:Conway's field No of surreal numbers comes both with a natural total order and an additional "simplicity relation" which is also a partial order. Considering No as a doubly ordered structure for these two orderings, an isomorphic copy of No into itself is called a surreal substructure. It turns out that many natural subclasses of No are actually of this type. In this paper, we study various constructions that give rise to surreal substructures and analyze important examples in greater detail.

Abstract:Ron Graham's Sequence is a surprising bijection from non-negative integers to non-negative, non-prime integers that was introduced by Ron Graham in the June 1986 "Problems" column of $\textit{Mathematics Magazine}$, and which later appeared in Problem A2 of the 2013 William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition. We describe some properties of this function, give an algorithm for computing its values in pseudo-polynomial time, and prove a 22 year-old conjecture about an upper bound for the function.

Abstract:A sequence $a=(a_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ of non-negative integers is called realizable if there is a self-map $T:X\to X$ on a set $X$ such that $a_n$ is equal to the number of periodic points of $T$ in $X$ of (not necessarily exact) period $n$, for all $n\geq1$. The sequence $a$ is called almost realizable if there exists a positive integer $m$ such that $(ma_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ is realizable. In this article, we show that certain wide classes of integer sequences are realizable, which contain many famous combinatorial sequences, such as the sequences of Apéry numbers of both kinds, central Delannoy numbers, Franel numbers, Domb numbers, Zagier numbers, and central trinomial coefficients. We also show that the sequences of Catalan numbers, Motzkin numbers, and large and small Schröder numbers are not almost realizable.
