Abstract:We present four different constructions of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences, and use them to obtain expressions for the enumeration sequences of 22 distinct open cases. This completes the enumeration of inversion sequences avoiding one or two patterns of length 3. Some of our constructions are based on generating trees. Others involve pattern-avoiding words, which we also count using generating trees. Furthermore, we introduce a generalization of inversion sequences, which we call shifted inversion sequences. It is sometimes easier to construct pattern-avoiding inversion sequences by seeing them as a particular case of shifted inversion sequences.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to complete the enumeration of inversion sequences avoiding one or two patterns of length 3. Specifically, the author proposes four different construction methods to generate inversion sequences avoiding specific patterns, and uses these construction methods to obtain the enumeration sequence expressions for 22 different open cases. This marks the complete enumeration of inversion sequences avoiding one or two patterns of length 3. ### Problem Background An inversion sequence is a special type of integer sequence, which is defined as follows: Given a natural number \(n\), an inversion sequence \(\sigma = (\sigma_1, \sigma_2, \ldots, \sigma_n)\) satisfies \(\sigma_i < i\) for all \(i\in\{1, 2, \ldots, n\}\). There is a simple bijective relationship between inversion sequences and permutations, called Lehmer coding, so the study of inversion sequences is of great significance in combinatorics. ### Research Motivation The study of inversion sequences avoiding specific patterns originates from the study of pattern - avoiding permutations, which is a classic topic in the field of combinatorial enumeration. The study of inversion sequences avoiding patterns began in the references [MS15] and [CMSW16], and has been further developed in many subsequent references. However, for some specific pattern - avoiding cases, such as the single pattern 010 of length 3 and some cases of avoiding pairs of patterns, have not been completely solved yet. ### Main Contributions of the Paper 1. **Solved the problem of avoiding the single pattern 010**: By proposing a new construction method, the author has solved the enumeration problem of inversion sequences avoiding the pattern 010. 2. **Solved the problem of avoiding the remaining 23 pairs of patterns**: By four different construction methods, the author has solved the problem of avoiding the remaining 23 pairs of patterns. 3. **Introduced the concept of shifted inversion sequences**: In order to construct pattern - avoiding inversion sequences more conveniently, the author introduced a generalized inversion sequence - shifted inversion sequences. ### Overview of Construction Methods 1. **Left - to - right insertion method**: Insert each element into the sequence step by step from left to right. 2. **Insertion method in order of values**: Insert elements in the order of values, and the specific insertion order varies according to the considered pattern. 3. **Decomposition based on the first maximum**: Decompose the sequence into two smaller sub - sequences by decomposing around the first maximum of the sequence. 4. **Decomposition based on the first minimum**: Similar to the third method, but decompose around the first minimum of the sequence. ### Conclusion Through these construction methods, the author has not only solved many unsolved enumeration problems of inversion sequences avoiding patterns, but also provided new tools and ideas for further research. In addition, the author has proposed conjectures about the algebraicity of the generating functions of inversion sequences avoiding pairs of patterns, and proved two of them. Finally, the author has discussed the asymptotic behavior of the number of inversion sequences avoiding patterns. ### Summary This paper has successfully solved the complete enumeration problem of inversion sequences avoiding one or two patterns of length 3 through innovative construction methods, making an important contribution to the field of combinatorics.
