Abstract:We derive the algebraic generating function for inversion sequences avoiding the patterns $201$ and $210$ by describing a set of succession rules, converting them to a system of generating function equations with one catalytic variable, and then solving the system with kernel method techniques.

Abstract:We introduce an algorithmic approach based on generating tree method for enumerating the inversion sequences with various pattern-avoidance restrictions. For a given set of patterns, we propose an algorithm that outputs either an accurate description of the succession rules of the corresponding generating tree or an ansatz. By using this approach, we determine the generating trees for the pattern-classes $I_n(000, 021), I_n(100, 021)$, $I_n(110, 021), I_n(102, 021)$, $I_n(100,012)$, $I_n(011,201)$, $I_n(011,210)$ and $I_n(120,210)$. Then we use the kernel method, obtain generating functions of each class, and find enumerating formulas. Lin and Yan studied the classification of the Wilf-equivalences for inversion sequences avoiding pairs of length-three patterns and showed that there are 48 Wilf classes among 78 pairs. In this paper, we solve six open cases for such pattern classes.

Abstract:Inversion sequences are integer sequences $(\sigma_1, \dots, \sigma_n)$ such that $0 \leqslant \sigma_i < i$ for all $1 \leqslant i \leqslant n$. The study of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences began in two independent articles by Mansour-Shattuck and Corteel-Martinez-Savage-Weselcouch in 2015 and 2016. These two initial articles solved the enumeration of inversion sequences avoiding a single pattern for every pattern of length 3 except the patterns 010 and 100. The case 100 was recently solved by Mansour and Yildirim. We solve the final case by making use of a decomposition of inversion sequences avoiding the pattern 010. Our decomposition needs to take into account the maximal value, and the number of distinct values occurring in the inversion sequence. We then expand our method to solve the enumeration of inversion sequences avoiding the pairs of patterns $\{010, 000\}, \{010, 110\}, \{010, 120\}$, and the Wilf-equivalent pairs $\{010, 201\} \sim \{010, 210\}$. For each family of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences considered, its enumeration requires the enumeration of some family of constrained words avoiding the same patterns, a question which we also solve.

Abstract:The study of pattern avoidance in inversion sequences recently attracts extensive research interests. In particular, Zhicong Lin and Jun Ma conjectured a formula that counts the number of inversion sequences avoiding the pattern $0012$. We will not only confirm this conjecture but also give a formula that enumerates the number of $0012$-avoiding inversion sequences in which the last entry equals $n-1$.

Abstract:We present four different constructions of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences, and use them to obtain expressions for the enumeration sequences of 22 distinct open cases. This completes the enumeration of inversion sequences avoiding one or two patterns of length 3. Some of our constructions are based on generating trees. Others involve pattern-avoiding words, which we also count using generating trees. Furthermore, we introduce a generalization of inversion sequences, which we call shifted inversion sequences. It is sometimes easier to construct pattern-avoiding inversion sequences by seeing them as a particular case of shifted inversion sequences.

Abstract:Recently, Yan and the first named author investigated systematically the enumeration of inversion or ascent sequences avoiding vincular patterns of length $3$, where two of the three letters are required to be adjacent. They established many connections with familiar combinatorial families and proposed several interesting conjectures. The objective of this paper is to address two of their conjectures concerning the enumeration of $\underline{12}0$-avoiding inversion or ascent sequences.

Abstract:This work concerns a construction of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences from right to left, called a generating tree growing on the left. We first apply this construction to inversion sequences avoiding 201 and 210, resulting in a new way of computing their generating function. We then use a slightly modified construction to compute the generating function of inversion sequences avoiding 010 and 102, which was only conjectured before.

Abstract:The number of inversion sequences avoiding two patterns $101$ and $102$ is known to be the same as the number of permutations avoiding three patterns $2341$, $2431$, and $3241$. This sequence also counts the number of Schröder paths without triple descents, restricted bicolored Dyck paths, $(101,021)$-avoiding inversion sequences, and weighted ordered trees. We provide bijections to integrate them together by introducing $F$-paths. Moreover, we define three kinds of statistics for each of the objects and count the number of each object with respect to these statistics. We also discuss direct sums of each object.

Abstract:A composition of a positive integer n is a k-tuple (λ1, λ2, …, λk) ∈ ℤk>0 such that n = λ1 + λ2 + … + λk. Our goal is to enumerate those compositions whose parts λ1, λ2, …, λk avoid a fixed arithmetic sequence. When this sequence is given by the even integers (i.e., all parts of the compositions must be odd), it is well known that the number of compositions is given by the Fibonacci sequence. A much more recent theorem says that when the parts are required to avoid all multiples of a given integer k, the resulting compositions are counted by a sequence given by a Fibonacci-type recursion of depth k. We extend this result to arbitrary arithmetic sequences. Our main tool is a lemma on generating functions that is no secret among experts but deserves to be more widely known.

Abstract:We give an explicit formula for the number of permutations avoiding cyclically a consecutive pattern in terms of the spectrum of the associated operator of the consecutive pattern. As an example, the number of cyclically consecutive $123$-avoiding permutations in ${\mathfrak S}_{n}$ is given by $n!$ times the convergent series ${\displaystyle \sum_{k=-\infty}^{\infty} \left(\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2\pi(k+1/3)}\right)^{n}}$ for $n \geq 2$.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent proof of the Stanley-Wilf conjecture, we study the asymptotic behavior of the number of permutations avoiding a generalized pattern. Generalized patterns allow the requirement that some pairs of letters must be adjacent in an occurrence of the pattern in the permutation, and consecutive patterns are a particular case of them. We determine the asymptotic behavior of the number of permutations avoiding a consecutive pattern, showing that they are an exponentially small proportion of the total number of permutations. For some other generalized patterns we give partial results, showing that the number of permutations avoiding them grows faster than for classical patterns but more slowly than for consecutive patterns.

Abstract:In this paper, we study pattern avoidance in weak ascent sequences, giving some results for patterns of length 3. This is an analogous study to one given by Duncan and Steingrímsson (2011) for ascent sequences. More precisely, we provide systematically the generating functions for the number of weak ascent sequences avoiding the patterns $001, 011, 012, 021$, and $102$. Additionally, we establish bijective connections between pattern-avoiding weak ascent sequences and other combinatorial objects, such as compositions, upper triangular 01-matrices, and plane trees.

Pattern avoidance in nonnesting permutations

Abstract:Nonnesting permutations are permutations of the multiset $\{1,1,2,2,\dots,n,n\}$ that avoid subsequences of the form $abba$ for any $a\neq b$. These permutations have recently been studied in connection to noncrossing (also called quasi-Stirling) permutations, which are those that avoid subsequences of the form $abab$, and in turn generalize the well-known Stirling permutations. Inspired by the work by Archer et al. on pattern avoidance in noncrossing permutations, we consider the analogous problem in the nonnesting case. We enumerate nonnesting permutations that avoid each set of two or more patterns of length 3, as well as those that avoid some sets of patterns of length 4. We obtain closed formulas and generating functions, some of which involve unexpected appearances of the Catalan and Fibonacci numbers. Our proofs rely on decompositions, recurrences, and bijections.

Abstract:Ascent sequences have received a lot of attention in recent years in connection with (2 + 2)-free posets and other combinatorial objects. Here, we first show bijectively that analogous repetition sequences are counted by the Bell numbers, and 021-avoiding repetition sequences by the Catalan numbers. Then we adapt a bijection of Chen et al and use it along with the "symbolic" method of Flajolet to find the 4-variable generating function for 021-avoiding ascent sequences by length, number of 0's, number of isolated 0's, and number of runs of 2 or more 0's. We deduce that 021-avoiding ascent sequences that have no consecutive 0's (resp. no isolated 0's) both satisfy a Catalan-like recurrence, differing only in initial conditions, and give a bijective proof for the case of no consecutive 0's. Lastly, we show that 021-avoiding descent sequences are equinumerous with same-size $UUDU$-avoiding Dyck paths.

Abstract:We consider the avoidance of patterns in inversion sequences that relate sorting via sorting machines including data structures such as pop stacks and stacks. Such machines have been studied under a variety of additional constraints and generalizations, some of which we apply here. We give the classification of several classes of sortable inversion sequences in terms of pattern avoidance. We are able to provide an exact enumeration of some of the sortable classes in question using both classical approaches and a more recent strategy utilizing generating trees.
