Abstract:There are several standard procedures used to create new sequences from a given sequence or from a given pair of sequences. In this paper I discuss the most popular of these procedures. For each procedure, I give a definition and provide examples based on three famous sequences: the natural numbers, the prime numbers and the Fibonacci numbers. I also add my thoughts on what makes a sequence interesting. My goal is to help my readers invent new sequences, differentiate interesting sequences from boring ones, and better understand sequences they encounter.

Abstract:The first author recently introduced an integer sequence now numbered A355519 in OEIS. This sequence arose from counting bracket tournaments; its study evokes the analysis of the Catalan triangle (sequence A009766 in OEIS) and the related Catalan numbers, sequence A000108 in OEIS. We therefore introduce a general construction that places these sequences on the same footing and suggests many new integer sequences. We provide code for performing this construction and a lengthy list of examples. This construction determines a function from input sequences to output sequences. Some of the resulting output sequences are in OEIS and others are not.

Abstract:Sequences whose terms are equal to the number of functions with specified properties are considered. Properties are based on the notion of derangements in a more general sense. Several sequences which generalize the standard notion of derangements are thus obtained. These sequences generate a number of integer sequences from the well-known Sloane's encyclopedia.

Abstract:In his July 1974 Scientific American column, Martin Gardner mentioned the Handbook of Integer Sequences, which then contained 2372 sequences. Today the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (the OEIS) contains 140000 sequences. This paper discusses eight of them, suggested by the theme of the Eighth Gathering For Gardner: they are all infinite, and all 'ateful in one way or another. Each one is connected with an unsolved problem. The sequences are related to: hateful numbers, Angelini's 1995 puzzle, the persistence of a number, Alekseyev's 123 sequence, the curling number conjecture, Quet's prime-generating recurrence, the traveling salesman's problem, and the Riemann Hypothesis.

Abstract:We discuss an interesting sequence defined recursively; namely, sequence A105774 from the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences, and study some of its properties. Our main tools are Fibonacci representation, finite automata, and the Walnut theorem-prover. We also prove two new results about synchronized sequences.

Abstract:This paper describes a class of sequences that are in many ways similar to Fibonacci sequences: given n, sum the previous two terms and divide them by the largest possible power of n. The behavior of such sequences depends on n. We analyze these sequences for small n: 2, 3, 4, and 5. Surprisingly these behaviors are very different. We also talk about any n. Many statements about these sequences are difficult or impossible to prove, but they can be supported by probabilistic arguments, we have plenty of those in this paper. We also introduce ten new sequences. Most of the new sequences are also related to Fibonacci numbers proper, not just free Fibonacci numbers.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with finite sequences of integers that may be written as sums of squares of two nonzero integers. We first find infinitely many integers $n$ such that $n, n+h$ and $n+k$ are all sums of two squares where $h$ and $k$ are two arbitrary integers, and as an immediate corollary obtain, in parametric terms, three consecutive integers that are sums of two squares. Similarly we obtain $n$ in parametric terms such that all the four integers $n, n+1, n+2, n+4$ are sums of two squares. We also find infinitely many integers $n$ such that all the five integers $n, n+1, n+2, n+4, n+5$ are sums of two squares, and finally, we find infinitely many arithmetic progressions, with common difference $4$, of five integers all of which are sums of two squares.

Abstract:This article investigates integer sequences that partition the sequence into blocks of various lengths - irregular arrays. The main result of the article is explicit formulas for numbering of irregular arrays. A generalization of Cantor diagonal method is proposed. We also define and describe intra-block permutations of natural numbers. Generalizations of reluctant sequences are introduced, namely generalized reluctant sequences and generalized reverse reluctant sequences. Explicit formulas are presented for these sequences. The article provides numerous examples to illustrate all statements.

Abstract:Integer sequences are of central importance to the modeling of concepts admitting complete finitary descriptions. We introduce a novel view on the learning of such concepts and lay down a set of benchmarking tasks aimed at conceptual understanding by machine learning models. These tasks indirectly assess model ability to abstract, and challenge them to reason both interpolatively and extrapolatively from the knowledge gained by observing representative examples. To further aid research in knowledge representation and reasoning, we present FACT, the Finitary Abstraction Comprehension Toolkit. The toolkit surrounds a large dataset of integer sequences comprising both organic and synthetic entries, a library for data pre-processing and generation, a set of model performance evaluation tools, and a collection of baseline model implementations, enabling the making of the future advancements with ease.

Abstract:The sequence starts with a(1) = 1; to extend it one writes the sequence so far as XY^k, where X and Y are strings of integers, Y is nonempty and k is as large as possible: then the next term is k. The sequence begins 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 2, ... A 4 appears for the first time at position 220, but a 5 does not appear until about position 10^{10^{23}}. The main result of the paper is a proof that the sequence is unbounded. We also present results from extensive numerical investigations of the sequence and of certain derived sequences, culminating with a heuristic argument that t (for t=5,6, ...) appears for the first time at about position 2^(2^(3^(4^(5^...^({(t-2)}^{(t-1)}))))), where ^ denotes exponentiation. The final section discusses generalizations.

Abstract:The notion of transducer integer sequences is considered through a series of examples. By definition, transducer integer sequences are integer sequences produced, under a suitable interpretation, by finite automata encoding tree morphisms (length and prefix preserving transformations of words). Transducer integer sequences are related to the notion of self-similar groups and semigroups, as well as to the notion of automatic sequences.

Abstract:In this study, several interesting iterative sequences were investigated. First, we define the iterative sequences. We fix function f(n). An iterative sequence starts with a natural number n, and calculates the sequence f(n),f(f(n)), ...f(f(f(f(n)))),... We then search for interesting features in this sequence. We study Kaprekar's routine, the digit factorial process, and the digit power process. The authors presented new variants of Kaprekar's routine.

Abstract:The Fibonacci sequence is a series of positive integers in which, starting from $0$ and $1$, every number is the sum of two previous numbers, and the limiting ratio of any two consecutive numbers of this sequence is called the golden ratio. The Fibonacci numbers and the golden ratio are two significant concepts that keep appearing everywhere. In this article, we investigate the following issues: (i) We recall the Fibonacci sequence, the golden ratio, their properties and applications, and some early generalizations of the golden ratio. The Fibonacci sequence is a $2$-sequence because it is generated by the sum of two previous terms, $f_{n+2} = f_{n+1} + f_{n}$. As a natural extension of this, we introduce several typical $p$-sequences where every term is the sum of $p$ previous terms given $p$ initial values called "seeds". In particular, we introduce the notion of $1$-sequence. We then discuss generating functions and limiting ratio values of $p$-sequences. Furthermore, inspired by Fibonacci's rabbit pair problem, we consider a general problem whose particular cases lead to nontrivial additive sequences. (ii) We obtain closed expressions for odd and even sums, sum of the first $n$ numbers, and the sum of squares of the first $n$ numbers of the "exponent" $p$-sequence whose seeds are $(0,1,\cdots,p-1)$. (iii) We investigate the $p$-golden ratio of $p$-sequences, express a positive integer power of the $p$-golden ratio as a polynomial of degree $p-1$, and obtain values of golden angles for different $p$-golden ratios. We also consider further generalizations of the golden ratio. (iv) We establish a family of determinantal identities of which the Cassini's identity is a particular case.

Abstract:In an automatic search, we found conjectural recurrences for some sequences in the OEIS that were not previously recognized as being D-finite. In some cases, we are able to prove the conjectured recurrence. In some cases, we are not able to prove the conjectured recurrence, but we can prove that a recurrence exists. In some remaining cases, we do not know where the recurrence might come from.

Abstract:As a report of a teaching experience, we analyse Haskell programs computing two integer sequences: the Hamming sequence and the Ulam sequence. For both of them, we investigate two strategies of computation: the first is based on filtering out those natural numbers that do not belong to the sequence, whereas the second is based on the direct generation of num- bers that belong to the sequence. Advocating cross-fertilisation among ideas emerging when programming in different programming paradigms, in the background, we sketch out some considerations about corresponding C programs solving the same two problems.
