Conformal Geometry and Dynamics

Abstract:The KSS nest is a sophisticated choice of puzzle pieces given in [Ann. of Math. 165 (2007), 749–841]. This nest, once combined with the KL-Lemma, has proven to be a powerful machinery, leading to several important advancements in the field of holomorphic dynamics. We give here a presentation of the KSS nest in terms of tableau. This is an effective language invented by Branner and Hubbard to deal with the complexity of the dynamics of puzzle pieces. We show, in a typical situation, how to make the combination between the KSS nest and the KL-Lemma. One consequence of this is the recently proved Branner–Hubbard conjecture. Our estimates here can be used to give an alternative proof of the rigidity property.

Abstract:Consider a variant of the usual story about the iterative conception of sets. As usual, at every stage, you find all the (bland) sets of objects which you found earlier. But you also find the result of tapping any earlier-found object with any magic wand (from a given stock of magic wands). By varying the number and behaviour of the wands, we can flesh out this idea in many different ways. This paper's main Theorem is that any loosely constructive way of fleshing out this idea is synonymous with a ZF-like theory. This Theorem has rich applications; it realizes John Conway's (1976) Mathematicians' Liberation Movement; and it connects with a lovely idea due to Alonzo Church (1974).

Abstract:Puzzles based on coloured cubes and other coloured geometrical figures have a long history in the recreational mathematical literature. One of the most commercially famous of these puzzles is the Instant Insanity that consists of four cubes. Their faces are coloured with four different colours in such a way that each colour is present in each one of the four cubes. To solve the puzzle, one needs to stack the cubes in a tower in such a way that each one of the colours appears exactly once in the four long faces of the tower. The main purpose of this paper is to study the combinatorial richness of a mathematical model of this puzzle by analysing all possible ways of colouring the cubes to form a puzzle analogous to the Instant Insanity. We have done this analysis for $n$ cubes and $n$ colours for $n=4, 5, 6$. This combinatorial analysis allowed us to design the Mutando of Insanity, a puzzle that we presented at Gathering for Gardner 12 (G4G12).

Abstract:Morley's Theorem about angle trisectors can be viewed as the statement that a certain diagram `exists', meaning that triangles of prescribed shapes meet in a prescribed pattern. This diagram is the case n=3 of a class of diagrams we call `Conway's doughnuts'. These diagrams can be proven to exist using John Smillie's holonomy method, recently championed by Eric Braude: `Guess the shapes; check the holonomy.' For n = 2, 3, 4 the existence of the doughnut happens to be easy to prove because the hole is absent or triangular.

Conway Rational Tangles and the Thompson Group

Abstract:There is a map, defined and studied by Jones, from Thompson's group $F$ to knots. Jones proved that every knot is in the image of this map -- that is, that every knot can be seen as the "knot closure" of a Thompson group element. We approach the question of methodologically finding Thompson group elements to generate a particular knot or link through the lens of Conway's rational tangles. We are able to give methods to construct any product or concatenation of simple tangles, and we hope these are seeds for a more skein-theoretic approach to the construction question.

Abstract:In this article, we revise Conway's Law from a mathematical point of view. By introducing a task graph, we first rigorously state Conway's Law based on the homomorphisms in graph theory for the software system and the organizations that created it. Though Conway did not mention it, the task graph shows the geometric structure of tasks, which plays a crucial role. Furthermore, due to recent requirements for high-level treatment of communication (due to security, knowledge hiding, etc.) in organizations and hierarchical treatment of organizations, we have reformulated these statements in terms of weakened homomorphisms, and the continuous maps in graph topology. In order to use graph topology and the continuous map in Conway's law, we have prepared them as mathematical tools, and then we show the natural expression of Conway's correspondences with hierarchical structures.

Commutative Properties of Schubert Puzzles with Convex Polygonal Boundary Shapes

Abstract:We generalize classical triangular Schubert puzzles to puzzles with convex polygonal boundary. We give these puzzles a geometric Schubert calculus interpretation and derive novel combinatorial commutativity statements, using purely geometric arguments, for puzzles with four, five, and six sides, having various types of symmetry in their boundary conditions. We also present formulas for the associated structure constants in terms of Littlewood-Richardson numbers, and we prove an analogue of commutativity for parallelogram-shaped equivariant puzzles.

Abstract:Recall the classical 15-puzzle, consisting of 15 sliding blocks in a $4\times 4$ grid. Famously, the configuration space of this puzzle consists of two connected components, corresponding to the odd and even permutations of the symmetric group $S_{15}$. In 1974, Wilson generalised sliding block puzzles beyond the $4\times 4$ grid to arbitrary graphs (considering $n-1$ sliding blocks on a graph with $n$ vertices), and characterised the graphs for which the corresponding configuration space is connected. In this work, we extend Wilson's characterisation to sliding block puzzles with an arbitrary number of blocks (potentially leaving more than one empty vertex). For any graph, we determine how many empty vertices are necessary to connect the corresponding configuration space, and more generally we provide an algorithm to determine whether any two configurations are connected. Our work may also be interpreted within the framework of "Friends and Strangers graphs", where empty vertices correspond to "social butterflies" and sliding blocks to "asocial" people.

Solution Numbers for Eight Blocks to Madness Puzzle

Abstract:The 30 MacMahon colored cubes have each face painted with one of six colors and every color appears on at least one face. One puzzle involving these cubes is to create a $2\times2\times2$ model with eight distinct MacMahon cubes to recreate a larger version with the external coloring of a specified target cube, also a MacMahon cube, and touching interior faces are the same color. J.H. Conway is credited with arranging the cubes in a $6\times6$ tableau that gives a solution to this puzzle. In fact, the particular set of eight cubes that solves this puzzle can be arranged in exactly \textit{two} distinct ways to solve the puzzle. We study a less restrictive puzzle without requiring interior face matching. We describe solutions to the $2\times2\times2$ puzzle and the number of distinct solutions attainable for a collection of eight cubes. Additionally, given a collection of eight MacMahon cubes, we study the number of target cubes that can be built in a $2\times2\times2$ model. We calculate the distribution of the number of cubes that can be built over all collections of eight cubes (the maximum number is five) and provide a complete characterization of the collections that can build five distinct cubes. Furthermore, we identify nine new sets of twelve cubes, called Minimum Universal sets, from which all 30 cubes can be built.

Abstract:In this paper, we first propose a simple formal language to specify types of agents in terms of necessary conditions for their announcements. Based on this language, types of agents are treated as ‘first-class citizens’ and studied extensively in various dynamic epistemic frameworks which are suitable for reasoning about knowledge and agent types via announcements and questions. To demonstrate our approach, we discuss various versions of Smullyan’s Knights and Knaves puzzles, including the Hardest Logic Puzzle Ever (HLPE) proposed by Boolos (in Harv Rev Philos 6:62–65, 1996). In particular, we formalize HLPE and verify a classic solution to it. Moreover, we propose a spectrum of new puzzles based on HLPE by considering subjective (knowledge-based) agent types and relaxing the implicit epistemic assumptions in the original puzzle. The new puzzles are harder than the previously proposed ones in the literature, in the sense that they require deeper epistemic reasoning. Surprisingly, we also show that a version of HLPE in which the agents do not know the others’ types does not have a solution at all. Our formalism paves the way for studying these new puzzles using automatic model checking techniques.
Puzzle Ideals for Grassmannians

Abstract:Puzzles are a versatile combinatorial tool to interpret the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for Grassmannians. In this paper, we propose the concept of puzzle ideals whose varieties one-one correspond to the tilings of puzzles and present an algebraic framework to construct the puzzle ideals which works with the Knutson-Tao-Woodward puzzle and its $T$-equivariant and $K$-theoretic variants for Grassmannians. For puzzles for which one side is free, we propose the side-free puzzle ideals whose varieties one-one correspond to the tilings of side-free puzzles, and the elimination ideals of the side-free puzzle ideals contain all the information of the structure constants for Grassmannians with respect to the free side. Besides the underlying algebraic importance of the introduction of these puzzle ideals is the computational feasibility to find all the tilings of the puzzles for Grassmannians by solving the defining polynomial systems, demonstrated with illustrative puzzles via computation of Gröbner bases.

Abstract:We introduce Quintessence: a family of burr puzzles based on the geometry and combinatorics of the 120-cell. We discuss the regular polytopes, their symmetries, the dodecahedron as an important special case, the three-sphere, and the quaternions. We then construct the 120-cell, giving an illustrated survey of its geometry and combinatorics. This done, we describe the pieces out of which Quintessence is made. The design of our puzzle pieces uses a drawing technique of Leonardo da Vinci; the paper ends with a catalogue of new puzzles.

Abstract:We introduce a one-person game that we call Padlock Solitaire which resembles the well-known clock solitaire card game. Analyzing variants of this game we obtain simple proofs of some classical results of combinatorics including ballot theorems and the enumeration of spanning trees in various graphs and hypergraphs.

Abstract:We prove a formula which gives the number of occurrences of certain labels and local configurations inside two-step puzzles introduced by Buch, Kresch, Purbhoo and Tamvakis from the work of Knutson. Puzzles are tilings of the triangular lattice by edge labeled tiles and are known to compute the Schubert structure constants of the cohomology of two-step flag varieties. The formula that we obtain depends only on the boundary conditions of the puzzle. The proof is based on the study of color maps which are tilings of the triangular lattice by edge labeled tiles obtained from puzzles.

Abstract:We help Alice play a certain "convergence game" against Bob and win the prize, which is a constructive solution to a problem by Erdős and Graham, posed in their 1980 book on open questions in combinatorial number theory. Namely, after several reductions using peculiar arithmetic identities, the game outcome shows that the set of points \[ \Big(\sum_{n\in A}\frac{1}{n}, \sum_{n\in A}\frac{1}{n+1}, \sum_{n\in A}\frac{1}{n+2}\Big), \] obtained as $A$ ranges over infinite sets of positive integers, has a non-empty interior. This generalizes a two-dimensional result by Erdős and Straus.
