Abstract:We investigate a coin-weighing puzzle that appeared in the all-Russian math Olympiad in 2000. We liked the puzzle because the methods of analysis differ from classical coin-weighing puzzles. We generalize the puzzle by varying the number of participating coins, and deduce a complete solution, perhaps surprisingly, the objective can be achieved in no more than two weighings regardless of the number of coins involved.

Abstract:This work delves into the realm of logic puzzles by focusing on the Knight and Knave problems popularized by Raymond Smullyan in his book series "What is the Name of This Book?". The puzzles revolve around characters known as Knights (truth-tellers) and Knaves (liars), challenging solvers to determine the true identity of each person based on their statements. This paper explores the utilization of Python algorithms to automate the process of solving these puzzles, offering a computational approach that enhances efficiency and accessibility. In this work, we aim to develop a Python algorithm capable of parsing and analyzing the statements provided in the Knight and Knave puzzles. A logical reasoning framework is integrated within the algorithm to deduce the identities of the characters based on their statements. The algorithm processes the input statements, create a knowledge base, and make deductions following the rules of Knight and Knave logic. The developed algorithm is thoroughly tested on various instances of Knight and Knave puzzles, comparing its results to known solutions and manual approaches. We further expand the scope of the problem by introducing a Normal (who can sometimes lie and sometimes say the truth).

Abstract:A fair coin is flipped $n$ times, and two finite sequences of heads and tails (words) $A$ and $B$ of the same length are given. Each time the word $A$ appears in the sequence of coin flips, Alice gets a point, and each time the word $B$ appears, Bob gets a point. Who is more likely to win? This puzzle is a slight extension of Litt's game that recently set Twitter abuzz. We show that Litt's game is fair for any value of $n$ and any two words that have the same auto-correlation structure by building up a bijection that exchanges Bob and Alice scores; the fact that the inter-correlation does not come into play in this case may come up as a surprise.

Abstract:In the first article in the series examining mathematics on coins, we discuss two great scientists who are not only featured on many coins, but also contributed to both theory and practice of coinage. The first one is Nicolaus Copernicus, author of the treaty \emph{Monetae cudendae ratio} in which he proposed the law governing competition between money and proposed reform of coinage in the Royal Prussia. The second one is Sir Isaac Newton, warden and Master of the Royal Mint, and overseer of the Great Recoinage of 1696.
Solving probability puzzles with logic toolkit

Abstract:The proposed approach is to formalise the probabilistic puzzle in equational FOL. Two formalisations are needed: one theory for all models of the given puzzle, and a second theory for the favorable models. Then Mace4 - that computes all the interpretation models of a FOL theory - is called twice. First, it is asked to compute all the possible models M p .Second, the additional constraint is added, and Mace4 computes only favourabile models M f. Finally, the definition of probability is applied: the number of favorable models is divided by the number of possible models. The proposed approach equips students from the logic tribe to find the correct solution for puzzles from the probabilitistic tribe, by using their favourite instruments: modelling and formalisation. I have exemplified here five probabilistic puzzles and how they can be solved by translating the min FOL and then find the corresponding interpretation models. Mace4 was the tool of choice here. Ongoing work is investigating the limits of this method on various collections of probabilistic puzzles

Abstract:In the article "The Tale of Two Queens and Two Towering Figures" published in CNJ in 2012 (CNJ vol. 57 No. 5, pp. 304-315), we discussed the contributions of Copernicus and Newton to coin minting and monetary reforms, as well as the commemoration of their achievements on contemporary coins. In the current article we will examine more explicit aspects of the relationship between mathematical sciences and numismatics, namely the presence of mathematical formulae on coins. We will survey examples of coins depicting mathematical formulae, ranging from some universally recognizable ones to more advanced symbolic expressions which are known only to specialists.

Abstract:Finding a counterfeit coin with the different weight from a set of visually identical coin using a balance, usually a two-armed balance, known as the balance question, is an intersting and inspiring question. Its variants involve diversified toolkits including information theory, coding theory, optimization, probabilistic theory, combinatorics and a lot of quick wits. In this paper some variants of the balance game are dicussed, especially from a probabilistic perspective. Unlike the gravity field setting, we adopt an electromagnetic field, where tighter bounds for some variants of the balance game can be found. We focus on the predetermined setting, where the player has to arrange the strategy without observing the outcome of the balancing. The sufficient condition for the balance to win is obtained by adopting a coding scheme. Apart from designing a delicate encoding framework, we also propose and analyze the performance of a completely randomized strategy. The optimal behavior of a randomized player is derived. Then we rise the dishonest balance game, in which the balance can adversely cheat the player. We present some elementary results on the analysis of dishonest balance game using probabilistic method at length. Its relationship with Shannon' s coding theorem in a noisy channel is also revealed.
Liar, Liar, Logical Mire: A Benchmark for Suppositional Reasoning in Large Language Models

Abstract:Knights and knaves problems represent a classic genre of logical puzzles where characters either tell the truth or lie. The objective is to logically deduce each character's identity based on their statements. The challenge arises from the truth-telling or lying behavior, which influences the logical implications of each statement. Solving these puzzles requires not only direct deductions from individual statements, but the ability to assess the truthfulness of statements by reasoning through various hypothetical scenarios. As such, knights and knaves puzzles serve as compelling examples of suppositional reasoning. In this paper, we introduce $\textit{TruthQuest}$, a benchmark for suppositional reasoning based on the principles of knights and knaves puzzles. Our benchmark presents problems of varying complexity, considering both the number of characters and the types of logical statements involved. Evaluations on $\textit{TruthQuest}$ show that large language models like Llama 3 and Mixtral-8x7B exhibit significant difficulties solving these tasks. A detailed error analysis of the models' output reveals that lower-performing models exhibit a diverse range of reasoning errors, frequently failing to grasp the concept of truth and lies. In comparison, more proficient models primarily struggle with accurately inferring the logical implications of potentially false statements.

From Young's Lattice to Coinvariants

Abstract:Inspired by Vershik and Okounkov's inductive and Lie-theoretic approach to the representation theory of the symmetric group, we extend their point of view to reducible $S_n$-modules. Using induced representations along Young's lattice, we define an orthonormal weight basis for the regular representation of $S_n$ and use its rigidity to exhibit dualities between the left and right actions of $S_n$ and between restriction and induction of representations. We also show our weight basis is equivalent to the basis of matrix units corresponding to Young's seminormal form. We then realize $\mathbb{C}[S_n]$ in a subspace of the polynomial ring $R[z_1, \ldots , z_n]$. The induced weight decomposition allows us to map this subspace of polynomials to the ring of coinvariants, similar to the work of Ariki, Terasoma, and Yamada on higher Specht polynomials but perhaps a bit more intrinsic as we work in terms of an orthonormal basis. Our construction makes explicit the connection between the charge statistic on standard tableaux (which corresponds to degree in the coinvariant ring) and the action of adjacent transpositions on weight vectors in the seminormal representation of $S_n$. It also exposes the inductive structure of $S_n$ hidden in the coinvariant ring. All our constructions are elementary, and we are curious about their geometric meaning.

Abstract:Numberlink is a puzzle game in which players are given a grid with nodes marked with a natural number, $n$, and asked to create $n$ connections with neighboring nodes. Connections can only be made with top, bottom, left and right neighbors, and one cannot have more than two connections between any neighboring nodes. In this paper, we give a mathematical formulation of the puzzles via graphs and give some immediate consequences of this formulation. The main result of this work is an algorithm which provides insight into characteristics of these puzzles and their solutions. Finally, we give a few open questions and further directions.

Abstract:A neat question involving coin flips surfaced on $\Bbb X$, and generated an intensive outbreak of `social mathematics'. In a sequence of flips of a fair coin, Alice wins a point at each appearance of two consecutive heads, and Bob wins a point whenever a head is followed immediately by a tail. Who is more likely to win the game? The subsequent discussion illustrated conflicting intuitions, and concluded with the correct answer (it is a close thing). It is explained here why the context of the question is interesting and how it may be answered in a quantitative manner using the probabilistic techniques of reversal, coupling, and renewal.

Abstract:This paper is a light walk along interfaces between logic and probability, triggered by a chance encounter with Ed Brinksma. It is not a research paper, or a literature survey, but a pointer to issues. I discuss both direct combinations of logic and probability and structured ways in which logic can be seen as a qualitative version of probability theory. I end by sketching a concrete program for classifying qualitative scenarios that would lend themselves to simple logical reasoning methods, but I also acknowledge a challenge: the ‘unreasonable effective of probability’.

Abstract:Akari, Takuzu, Kakuro and KenKen are logic games similar to Sudoku. In Akari, a labyrinth on a grid has to be lit by placing lanterns, respecting various constraints. In Takuzu a grid has to be filled with 0's and 1's, while respecting certain constraints. In Kakuro a grid has to be filled with numbers such that the sums per row and column match given values; similarly in KenKen a grid has to be filled with numbers such that in given areas the product, sum, difference or quotient equals a given value. We give physical algorithms to realize zero-knowledge proofs for these games which allow a player to show that he knows a solution without revealing it. These interactive proofs can be realized with simple office material as they only rely on cards and envelopes. Moreover, we formalize our algorithms and prove their security.
