Abstract:If scientific discovery is one of the main driving forces of human progress, insight is the fuel for the engine, which has long attracted behavior-level research to understand and model its underlying cognitive process. However, current tasks that abstract scientific discovery mostly focus on the emergence of insight, ignoring the special role played by domain knowledge. In this concept paper, we view scientific discovery as an interplay between $thinking \ out \ of \ the \ box$ that actively seeks insightful solutions and $thinking \ inside \ the \ box$ that generalizes on conceptual domain knowledge to keep correct. Accordingly, we propose Mindle, a semantic searching game that triggers scientific-discovery-like thinking spontaneously, as infrastructure for exploring scientific discovery on a large scale. On this basis, the meta-strategies for insights and the usage of concepts can be investigated reciprocally. In the pilot studies, several interesting observations inspire elaborated hypotheses on meta-strategies, context, and individual diversity for further investigations.

Abstract:Problem solving is a process of purposeful search rather than a choice process. There are two types of search in the predetermined field: search based on choices and search based on consecutive contacts with objects, in which search based on choice consists of a series of choice with the subsequent testing of the chosen object; While search in an undefined field represents a process of roving aimed at coming across or recalling some real or ideal object. The basic problem types depend on the basic features of the cognitive processes in the problem-solving activity. The distinction of four types of problems (algorithm, semi-algorithm, semi-heuristic and heuristic) is closely related to the features of problem-solving process, and the variety of the operational and content prescriptions regulating the solution process.

Abstract:Most creative outputs are readily classified as belonging to a particular domain such as art, music, or technology. But does that mean the creative thinking that goes into creative projects respects these conventional domain boundaries? This question provides the departure point for this chapter. It is an important question because the answer has implications for how the creative process works, as well as for computational models of creativity, and thus it provides the departure point for this chapter. Next we look at how the creator sifts out from its vast contents those items to incorporate into a creative project, and converts these raw materials into a form that "gels" with the project. We then explore the hypothesis that the creative mind forges "mental wormholes" that connect concepts and percepts, often from seemingly disparate domains. Finally, we take a brief look at the strangely non-compositional interactions that take place in these mental wormholes, and techniques being advanced to model and understand these interactions.

Abstract:We revive an old lateral-thinking puzzle by Michael Rabin, involving poisons with strange properties. We show that the puzzle admits several unintended solutions that are just as interesting as the intended solution. Analyzing these alternative solutions using game theory yields surprisingly subtle results and several unanswered questions.

Abstract:<b>ABSTRACT</b></p><p xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:oasis="http://docs.oasis-open.org/ns/oasis-exchange/table">This article offers a synopsis of and a critical reflection on the research project OutsideTheBox Rethinking Assistive Technology with Autistic Children. The aim of the 3-year project was to develop digital technology that would holistically respond to the complex life-worlds of autistic children, affording positive experiences that they could share with others. Through a series of long-term participatory design processes, smart objects were developed individually with nine children employing a wide range of different methods (e.g., Co-operative Inquiry, Future Workshops, Fictional Inquiry, Magic Workshops, Drama and Making & Digital Fabrication). In this article are presented the cases of all children worked with and tie them together by a critical reflection across them. The discussion offers insights along three main themes: we a) substantiate the argument for a theoretical shift in conceptualizing roles for technology in the lives of disabled people, b) discuss our methodological contributions in participatory design processes and c) propose alternative, participatory approaches to evaluate outcomes.

Problem Solving at the Edge of Chaos: Entropy, Puzzles and the Sudoku Freezing Transition

Abstract:Sudoku is a widely popular $\mathcal{NP}$-Complete combinatorial puzzle whose prospects for studying human computation have recently received attention, but the algorithmic hardness of Sudoku solving is yet largely unexplored. In this paper, we study the statistical mechanical properties of random Sudoku grids, showing that puzzles of varying sizes attain a hardness peak associated with a critical behavior in the constrainedness of random instances. In doing so, we provide the first description of a Sudoku \emph{freezing} transition, showing that the fraction of backbone variables undergoes a phase transition as the density of pre-filled cells is calibrated. We also uncover a variety of critical phenomena in the applicability of Sudoku elimination strategies, providing explanations as to why puzzles become boring outside the typical range of clue densities adopted by Sudoku publishers. We further show that the constrainedness of Sudoku puzzles can be understood in terms of the informational (Shannon) entropy of their solutions, which only increases up to the critical point where variables become frozen. Our findings shed light on the nature of the $k$-coloring transition when the graph topology is fixed, and are an invitation to the study of phase transition phenomena in problems defined over \emph{alldifferent} constraints. They also suggest advantages to studying the statistical mechanics of popular $\mathcal{NP}$-Hard puzzles, which can both aid the design of hard instances and help understand the difficulty of human problem solving.

Abstract:The primary purpose of this study is to investigate students' perceptions about the characteristics of creativity and engagement in solving non-routine problems. It involved 64 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) university students, who participated in a two-year research project in New Zealand during which participants were given opportunities to utilise puzzle-based learning in their courses. Abstract:Much of our thinking focuses on deciding what to do in situations where the space of possible options is too large to evaluate exhaustively. Previous work has found that people do this by learning the general value of different behaviors, and prioritizing thinking about high-value options in new situations. Is this good-action bias always the best strategy, or can thinking about low-value options sometimes become more beneficial? Can people adapt their thinking accordingly based on the situation? And how do we know what to think about in novel events? Here, we developed a block-puzzle paradigm that enabled us to measure people's thinking plans and compare them to a computational model of rational thought. We used two distinct response methods to explore what people think about-a self-report method, in which we asked people explicitly to report what they thought about, and an implicit response time method, in which we used people's decision-making times to reveal what they thought about. Our results suggest that people can quickly estimate the apparent value of different options and use this to decide what to think about. Critically, we find that people can flexibly prioritize whether to think about high-value options (Experiments 1 and 2) or low-value options (Experiments 3, 4, and 5), depending on the problem. Through computational modeling, we show that these thinking strategies are broadly rational, enabling people to maximize the value of long-term decisions. Our results suggest that thinking plans are flexible: What we think about depends on the structure of the problems we are trying to solve.

A question of interest is 'Which activities can minds perform during their lifetime?' This question is very broad, thus in this article restricted to 'Which non-boring activities can minds perform?' The space of potential non-boring activities has been called by Yudkowsky 'fun space' (Yudkowsky, 2009). This paper aims to discuss the relation between various types of minds and the part of the fun space, which is accessible for them.

Abstract:This paper expands upon the invitation to rethink how psychology has constructed knowledge, theories, and research while analyzing the epistemological foundations of educational practices in schools, especially those aimed at promoting creativity. Our goal is to critically explore the shortcomings of the traditional, Westernized individualistic, and mostly positivistic approach usually found in school contexts. To foster creativity, a more dialogical, socio‐cultural, and collaborative framework is suggested, involving multiple perspectives and possibility thinking to address current educational challenges. Through an examination of education and creativity, we analyze educational practices in Westernized societies and explore the possibilities that arise from non‐Western perspectives and dialogical approaches. The discussion is guided by the following questions: what kind of educational practices have been bolstered in Westernized societies? How do these relate to educating (with and for) creativity? A case study is included to provide concrete illustrations that substantiate our arguments. Incorporating decolonial frameworks into cultural and socio‐cultural perspectives, as well as in creativity research, would enrich the understanding of these fields. Decolonial approaches can offer valuable insights by addressing power relations inherent in knowledge construction and practice. Embracing these approaches enables these fields to contribute to a more nuanced and comprehensive understanding of human phenomena.

Abstract:Organizational Psychology Review, Ahead of Print. Research suggests that extreme levels of constraint can push people to use different types of creative problem solving, but this conflicts with recent theory arguing that individuals are most creative under a moderate level of constraint. To resolve this issue, this paper proposes a combinatorial theory of constraints that argues it is necessary to understand how multiple dimensions of constraint (e.g., on problems and resources) work together to influence creativity, rather than study them in isolation. Accordingly, two conditions can enhance creativity—either through divergent problem solving or emergent problem solving—because they produce an overall balanced combination of constraint that improves important psychological mechanisms of creativity such as intrinsic motivation and creative search. Alternatively, two other conditions can hinder creativity—either due to ambiguous opportunity or futile effort—because they produce a combined low or high level of constraint on a task.

A Physics Lab Inside Your Head: Quantum Thought Experiments as an Educational Tool

Abstract:Thought experiments are where logical reasoning meets storytelling, catalysing progress in quantum science and technology. Schrödinger's famous cat brought quantum science to the public consciousness, while Deutsch's thought experiment to test the many-worlds and Copenhagen interpretations involved the first conception of a quantum computer. I will show how presenting thought experiments using quantum circuits can demystify apparent quantum paradoxes, and provide fun, conceptually important activities for learners to implement themselves on near-term quantum devices. Additionally, I will explain how thought experiments can be used as a first introduction to quantum, and outline a workshop based on the "quantum bomb tester" for school students as young as 11. This paper draws upon my experience in developing and delivering quantum computing workshops in Oxford, and in creating a quantum paradoxes content series with IBM Quantum of videos, blogs and code tutorials.

Abstract:Puzzles based on coloured cubes and other coloured geometrical figures have a long history in the recreational mathematical literature. One of the most commercially famous of these puzzles is the Instant Insanity that consists of four cubes. Their faces are coloured with four different colours in such a way that each colour is present in each one of the four cubes. To solve the puzzle, one needs to stack the cubes in a tower in such a way that each one of the colours appears exactly once in the four long faces of the tower. The main purpose of this paper is to study the combinatorial richness of a mathematical model of this puzzle by analysing all possible ways of colouring the cubes to form a puzzle analogous to the Instant Insanity. We have done this analysis for $n$ cubes and $n$ colours for $n=4, 5, 6$. This combinatorial analysis allowed us to design the Mutando of Insanity, a puzzle that we presented at Gathering for Gardner 12 (G4G12).
