Abstract:The conjectured squarefree density of an integral polynomial P in s variables is an Euler product SP which can be considered as a product of local densities. We show that a necessary and sufficient condition for SP to be 0 when P∈Z(X1,...,Xs) is a polynomial in s variables over the integers, is that either there is a prime p such that the values of P at all integer points are divisible by p2 or the polynomial is not squarefree as a polynomial. We also show that generally the upper squarefree density DP satisfies DP⩽SP .

Abstract:The question of whether or not a given integral polynomial takes infinitely many square-free values has only been addressed unconditionally for polynomials of degree at most 3. We address this question, on average, for polynomials of arbitrary degree.

Abstract:It is conjectured that all separable polynomials with integers coefficients, satisfying some local conditions, take infinitely many square free values on integer arguments. But not a single polynomial of degree greater than $3$ is proven to exhibit this property. In this article, we propose a method to show that ``cyclotomic polynomials $\Phi_{\ell}(X)$ take square free values with positive proportion". Following this method, conditionally, we do prove the Square-free conjecture for all cyclotomic polynomials. The method is applicable to some other class of polynomials as well. Moreover we show that the method readily succeeds for quadratic polynomials to give unconditional result. In the appendix, we give an elementary proof of the square-free conjecture for cyclotomic polynomials under abc conjecture.

Abstract:In this paper we study the distribution of consecutive square-free numbers of the forms $x^2+y^2+z+1$, $x^2+y^2+z+2$ and $x^2+y^2+z^2+z+1$, $x^2+y^2+z^2+z+2$, respectively. We establish asymptotic formulas for each of these two cases.

Abstract:The well-known result states that the square-free counting function up to $N$ is $N/\zeta(2)+O(N^{1/2})$. This corresponds to the identity polynomial $\text{Id}(x)$. It is expected that the error term in question is $O_\varepsilon(N^{\frac{1}{4}+\varepsilon})$ for arbitrarily small $\varepsilon>0$. Usually, it is more difficult to obtain a similar order of error term for a higher degree polynomial $f(x)$ in place of $\text{Id}(x)$. Under the Riemann hypothesis, we show that the error term, on average in a weak sense, over polynomials of arbitrary degree, is of the expected order $O_\varepsilon(N^{\frac{1}{4}+\varepsilon})$.

Abstract:Let $k \geq 2$ be an integer and $\mathbb F_q$ be a finite field with $q$ elements. We prove several results on the distribution in short intervals of polynomials in $\mathbb F_q[x]$ that are not divisible by the $k$th power of any non-constant polynomial. Our main result generalizes a recent theorem by Carmon and Entin on the distribution of squarefree polynomials to all $k \ge 2$. We also develop polynomial versions of the classical techniques used to study gaps between $k$-free integers in $\mathbb Z$. We apply these techniques to obtain analogues in $\mathbb F_q[x]$ of some classical theorems on the distribution of $k$-free integers. The latter results complement the main theorem in the case when the degrees of the polynomials are of moderate size.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the distribution of normalized zero-sets of random polynomials when the coefficients of the polynomials are random variables associated to independent (but not necessarily identical) distributions satisfying additional certain mild conditions. Our main result describes the expectation of such normalized zero-set when the degree of the random polynomial of one complex variable tends to infinity. This generalizes well-known results in the case of the Gaussian distribution. We also apply our main result to study certain random polynomials of several complex variables using the slicing method of value distribution theory.

Abstract:Let $f(t_1,\ldots,t_n)$ be a nondegenerate integral quadratic form. We analyze the asymptotic behavior of the function $D_f(X)$, the number of integers of absolute value up to $X$ represented by $f$. When $f$ is isotropic or $n$ is at least $3$, we show that there is a $\delta(f) \in \mathbb{Q} \cap (0,1)$ such that $D_f(X) \sim \delta(f) X$ and call $\delta(f)$ the density of $f$. We consider the inverse problem of which densities arise. Our main technical tool is a Near Hasse Principle: a quadratic form may fail to represent infinitely many integers that it locally represents, but this set of exceptions has density $0$ within the set of locally represented integers.

Abstract:We determine the density of curves having squarefree discriminant in some families of curves that arise from Vinberg representations, showing that the global density is the product of the local densities. We do so using the framework of Thorne and Laga's PhD theses and Bhargava's orbit-counting techniques. This paper generalises a previous result by Bhargava, Shankar and Wang. As an application, we give an asymptotic for the number of reducible orbits of our representations.

Abstract:Let $f_1,\dots,f_m$ be polynomials in $n$ variables with coefficients in a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. We estimate the number of points $\underline{x}$ in $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ such that each value $f_i(\underline{x})$ is a nonzero square in $\mathbb{F}_q$. The error term is especially small when the $f_i$ define smooth projective quadrics with nonsingular intersections. We improve the error term in a recent work by Asgarli--Yip on mutual position of smooth quadrics.

Abstract:A $\textit{square-full}$ number is a positive integer for which all its prime divisors divide itself at least twice. The counting function of square-full integers of the form $f(n)$ for $n\leqslant N$ is denoted by $S^{{\mathstrut\hspace{0.05em}\blacksquare}}_f(N)$. We have known that for a relatively prime pair $(a,b)\in\mathbb N\times \mathbb N\cup\{0\}$ with a linear polynomial $f(x)=ax+b$, its counting function is $\asymp_{a,b} N^\frac{1}{2}$. Fix $\varepsilon>0$, for an admissible quadratic polynomial $f(x)$, we prove that $$S^{{\mathstrut\hspace{0.05em}\blacksquare}}_f(N)\ll_{\varepsilon, f} N^{\varpi+\varepsilon}$$ for some absolute constant $\varpi<1/2$. Abstract:Abstract We initiate a study of the Euclidean distance degree in the context of sparse polynomials. Specifically, we consider a hypersurface $$f=0$$ f = 0 defined by a polynomial f that is general given its support, such that the support contains the origin. We show that the Euclidean distance degree of $$f=0$$ f = 0 equals the mixed volume of the Newton polytopes of the associated Lagrange multiplier equations. We discuss the implication of our result for computational complexity and give a formula for the Euclidean distance degree when the Newton polytope is a rectangular parallelepiped.

Abstract:Using classical results of Rogers bounding the $L^2$-norm of Siegel transforms, we give bounds on the heights of approximate integral solutions of quadratic equations and error terms in the quantiative Oppenheim theorem of Eskin-Margulis-Mozes for almost every quadratic form. Further applications yield quantitative information on the distribution of values of random polynomials at integral points.
