Abstract:In this paper we study the distribution of consecutive square-free numbers of the forms $x^2+y^2+z+1$, $x^2+y^2+z+2$ and $x^2+y^2+z^2+z+1$, $x^2+y^2+z^2+z+2$, respectively. We establish asymptotic formulas for each of these two cases.

Abstract:It is conjectured that all separable polynomials with integers coefficients, satisfying some local conditions, take infinitely many square free values on integer arguments. But not a single polynomial of degree greater than $3$ is proven to exhibit this property. In this article, we propose a method to show that ``cyclotomic polynomials $\Phi_{\ell}(X)$ take square free values with positive proportion". Following this method, conditionally, we do prove the Square-free conjecture for all cyclotomic polynomials. The method is applicable to some other class of polynomials as well. Moreover we show that the method readily succeeds for quadratic polynomials to give unconditional result. In the appendix, we give an elementary proof of the square-free conjecture for cyclotomic polynomials under abc conjecture.

Abstract:The well-known result states that the square-free counting function up to $N$ is $N/\zeta(2)+O(N^{1/2})$. This corresponds to the identity polynomial $\text{Id}(x)$. It is expected that the error term in question is $O_\varepsilon(N^{\frac{1}{4}+\varepsilon})$ for arbitrarily small $\varepsilon>0$. Usually, it is more difficult to obtain a similar order of error term for a higher degree polynomial $f(x)$ in place of $\text{Id}(x)$. Under the Riemann hypothesis, we show that the error term, on average in a weak sense, over polynomials of arbitrary degree, is of the expected order $O_\varepsilon(N^{\frac{1}{4}+\varepsilon})$.

Abstract:The conjectured squarefree density of an integral polynomial P in s variables is an Euler product SP which can be considered as a product of local densities. We show that a necessary and sufficient condition for SP to be 0 when P∈Z(X1,...,Xs) is a polynomial in s variables over the integers, is that either there is a prime p such that the values of P at all integer points are divisible by p2 or the polynomial is not squarefree as a polynomial. We also show that generally the upper squarefree density DP satisfies DP⩽SP .

Abstract:We show that there are infinitely many primes of the form $X^2+(Y^2+1)^2$ and $X^2+(Y^3+Z^3)^2$. This extends the work of Friedlander and Iwaniec showing that there are infinitely many primes of the form $X^2+Y^4$. More precisely, Friedlander and Iwaniec obtained an asymptotic formula for the number of primes of this form. For the sequences $X^2+(Y^2+1)^2$ and $X^2+(Y^3+Z^3)^2$ we establish Type II information that is too narrow for an aysmptotic formula, but we can use Harman's sieve method to produce a lower bound of the correct order of magnitude for primes of form $X^2+(Y^2+1)^2$ and $X^2+(Y^3+Z^3)^2$. Estimating the Type II sums is reduced to a counting problem which is solved by using the Weil bound, where the arithmetic input is quite different from the work of Friedlander and Iwaniec for $X^2+Y^4$. We also show that there are infinitely many primes $p=X^2+Y^2$ where $Y$ is represented by an incomplete norm form of degree $k$ with $k-1$ variables. For this we require a Deligne-type bound for correlations of hyper-Kloosterman sums.

Abstract: Let $m$ be any positive integer, and let $\lambda\in\{2,3\}$. We show that $m^2$ can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with $x,y,z,w$ nonnegative integers such that $x+2y+\lambda z$ is a positive square. We also pose some open conjectures; for example, we conjecture that any positive odd integer can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with $x,y,z,w\in\{0,1,2,\ldots\}$ and $x+2y+3z\in\{2^a:\ a=1,2,3,\ldots\}$.

Abstract:The well-known Lagrange's four-square theorem states that any integer n∈ℕ={0,1,2,...} can be written as the sum of four squares. Recently, Z.-W. Sun investigated the representations of n as x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2 with certain linear restrictions involving the integer variables x,y,z,w. In this paper, via the theory of quadratic forms, we further study the representations n=x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2 (resp., n=x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2) with certain linear restrictions involving primes. For example, we obtain the following results: (i) Each positive integer n>1 can be written as x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2 (x,y,z,w∈ℕ) with x+y prime. (ii) Every positive integer can be written as x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2 (x,y,z,w∈ℕ) with x+2y prime. (iii) Let k be any positive integer, and let d≥ 2^k-1 be a positive odd integer with 4d^2+1 prime. Then any sufficiently large integer can be written as x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2 (x,y,z,w∈ℕ) with x+2dy=p^k for some prime p.

Abstract:A $\textit{square-full}$ number is a positive integer for which all its prime divisors divide itself at least twice. The counting function of square-full integers of the form $f(n)$ for $n\leqslant N$ is denoted by $S^{{\mathstrut\hspace{0.05em}\blacksquare}}_f(N)$. We have known that for a relatively prime pair $(a,b)\in\mathbb N\times \mathbb N\cup\{0\}$ with a linear polynomial $f(x)=ax+b$, its counting function is $\asymp_{a,b} N^\frac{1}{2}$. Fix $\varepsilon>0$, for an admissible quadratic polynomial $f(x)$, we prove that $$S^{{\mathstrut\hspace{0.05em}\blacksquare}}_f(N)\ll_{\varepsilon, f} N^{\varpi+\varepsilon}$$ for some absolute constant $\varpi<1/2$. Under the assumption on the $abc$ conjecture, we expect the upper bound to be $O_{\varepsilon,f}(N^\varepsilon)$.

Abstract:The subject matter of this work are the two equations: x^4+y^4+z^4-2(x^2)(y^2)-2(y^2)(z^2)-2(z^2)(x^2)= n (1) And x^2+y^4+z^4-2x(y^2)-2x(z^2)-2(y^4)(z^4)= n (2) where n is a natural number. Contest Corner problem CC24, published in the May2012 issue of the journal Crux Mathematicorum(see reference[1]); provided the motivation behind this work. In Th.1, we show that eq.(1) if n=8N, N odd; then eq.(1) has no integer solutions; which generalizes problem CC24(the case n=24). We use Th.2, to find some rational solutions of eq.(1); which answers the second question in CC24. In Th.4, we show that if n= p, 4, or pq; where p and q are distinct primes. Then eq.(1)has no integer solutions. In Th.6, we determine all the integer solutions to (1), when n=p^2, p an odd prime. Theorems 7 through13, deal with equation (2). In Th.11, we determine all the integer solutions of eq.(2). Th.12 states that (2) has no integer solutions in n is congruent to 2 or 3 modulo4. Finally, in Th.13 we determine all the rational solutions of eq.(2).

Abstract:Let $a,b\in\mathbb N=\{0,1,2,\ldots\}$ and $\lambda\in\{2,3\}$. We show that $4^a(4b+1)$ can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with $x,y,z,w\in\mathbb N$ such that $x+2y+\lambda z$ is a positive square. Abstract:In this paper we investigate mixed sums of squares and triangular numbers. By means of q-series, we prove that any natural number n can be written as x + (2y) + Tz with x, y, z ∈ Z and Tz = z(z + 1)/2, this is stronger than a conjecture of Chen. Also, we can express n in any of the following forms: x + 2y + Tz , x 2 + 2y + 2Tz , x 2 + 2y + 4Tz , x 2 + 4y + 2Tz , 2x + 2y + Tz , x 2 + 2Ty + 2Tz , x 2 + 4Ty + Tz , x 2 + 4Ty + 2Tz , 2x + Ty + Tz , 2x 2 + 2Ty + Tz , 2x 2 + 4Ty + Tz , Tx + 4Ty + Tz , 2Tx + 2Ty + Tz , 2Tx + 4Ty + Tz . Concerning the converse we establish several theorems and make some conjectures.

Abstract:In this paper we establish some new results similar to Lagrange's four-square theorem. For example, we prove that any integer $n>1$ can be written $w(5w+1)/2+x(5x+1)/2+y(5y+1)/2+z(5z+1)/2$ with $w,x,y,z\in\mathbb Z$. Here we state two general results: (1) If $a$ and $b$ are odd integers with $a>0$, $b>-a$ and $\gcd(a,b)=1$, then all sufficient large integers can be written as $$\frac{w(aw+b)}2+\frac{x(ax+b)}2+\frac{y(ay+b)}2+\frac{z(az+b)}2$$ with $w,x,y,z$ nonnegative integers. (2) If $a$ and $b$ are integers with $a>0$, $b>-a$, $2\mid a$ and $\gcd(a,b)=1$, then all sufficient large integers can be written as $$w(aw+b)+x(ax+b)+y(ay+b)+z(az+b)$$ with $w,x,y,z$ nonnegative integers.

Abstract:Lagrange's four-square theorem asserts that any n∈N={0,1,2,…} can be written as the sum of four squares. This can be further refined in various ways. We show that any n∈N can be written as x2+y2+z2+w2 with x,y,z,w∈Z such that x+y+z (or x+2y, or x+y+2z) is a square (or a cube). We also prove that any n∈N can be written as x2+y2+z2+w2 with x,y,z,w∈N such that P(x,y,z) is a square, whenever P(x,y,z) is among the polynomialsx,2x,x−y,2x−2y,a(x2−y2)(a=1,2,3),x2−3y2,3x2−2y2,x2+ky2(k=2,3,5,6,8,12),(x+4y+4z)2+(9x+3y+3z)2,x2y2+y2z2+z2x2,x4+8y3z+8yz3,x4+16y3z+64yz3. Abstract:We study the distribution of consecutive sums of two squares in arithmetic progressions. We show that for any odd squarefree modulus $q$, any two reduced congruence classes $a_1$ and $a_2$ mod $q$, and any $r_1,r_2 \ge 1$, a positive density of sums of two squares begin a chain of $r_1$ consecutive sums of two squares, all of which are $a_1$ mod $q$, followed immediately by a chain of $r_2$ consecutive sums of two squares, all of which are $a_2$ mod $q$. This is an analog of the result of Maynard for the sequence of primes, showing that for any reduced congruence class $a$ mod $q$ and for any $r \ge 1$, a positive density of primes begin a sequence of $r$ consecutive primes, all of which are $a$ mod $q$.

Abstract:Let $f_1,\dots,f_m$ be polynomials in $n$ variables with coefficients in a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. We estimate the number of points $\underline{x}$ in $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ such that each value $f_i(\underline{x})$ is a nonzero square in $\mathbb{F}_q$. The error term is especially small when the $f_i$ define smooth projective quadrics with nonsingular intersections. We improve the error term in a recent work by Asgarli--Yip on mutual position of smooth quadrics.
