Abstract:We compute the density of primes represented by a special quadratic form in a fixed square residue class. Using this result and a new method introduced by Thaine we prove the fact that for a prime p > 3 congruent to 3 modulo 4, the component e ( p +1)/2 of the p -Sylow subgroup of the ideal class group of ℚ( ζ p ) is trivial.

Abstract:The conjectured squarefree density of an integral polynomial P in s variables is an Euler product SP which can be considered as a product of local densities. We show that a necessary and sufficient condition for SP to be 0 when P∈Z(X1,...,Xs) is a polynomial in s variables over the integers, is that either there is a prime p such that the values of P at all integer points are divisible by p2 or the polynomial is not squarefree as a polynomial. We also show that generally the upper squarefree density DP satisfies DP⩽SP .

Abstract:We consider Artin's conjecture on primitive roots over a number field $K$, reducing an algebraic number $\alpha\in K^\times$. Under the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis, there is a density ${\mathrm{dens}}(\alpha)$ counting the proportion of the primes of $K$ for which $\alpha$ is a primitive root. This density ${\mathrm{dens}}(\alpha)$ is a rational multiple of an Artin constant $A(\tau)$ that depends on the largest integer $\tau\geq 1$ such that $\alpha\in (K^\times)^\tau$. The aim of this paper is bounding the ratio ${\mathrm{dens}}(\alpha)/A(\tau)$, under the assumption that ${\mathrm{dens}}(\alpha)\neq 0$. Over $\mathbb Q$, this ratio is between $2/3$ and $2$, these bounds being optimal. For a general number field $K$ we provide upper and lower bounds that only depend on $K$.

Abstract:We study the distribution of consecutive sums of two squares in arithmetic progressions. We show that for any odd squarefree modulus $q$, any two reduced congruence classes $a_1$ and $a_2$ mod $q$, and any $r_1,r_2 \ge 1$, a positive density of sums of two squares begin a chain of $r_1$ consecutive sums of two squares, all of which are $a_1$ mod $q$, followed immediately by a chain of $r_2$ consecutive sums of two squares, all of which are $a_2$ mod $q$. This is an analog of the result of Maynard for the sequence of primes, showing that for any reduced congruence class $a$ mod $q$ and for any $r \ge 1$, a positive density of primes begin a sequence of $r$ consecutive primes, all of which are $a$ mod $q$.

Abstract:We make many new observations on primitive roots modulo primes. For an odd prime $p$ and an integer $c$, we establish a theorem concerning $\sum_g(\frac{g+c}p)$, where $g$ runs over all the primitive roots modulo $p$ among $1,\ldots,p-1$, and $(\frac{\cdot}p)$ denotes the Legendre symbol. On the basis of our numerical computations, we formulate 35 conjectures involving primitive roots modulo primes. For example, we conjecture that for any prime $p$ there is a primitive root $g 3$ there is a prime $q 3$ there exists a Fibonacci number $F_k 3$.

Abstract:In this paper we determine the asymptotic density of coprime fractions in those of the reduced fractions of number fields. When ordered by norms of denominators, we count a fraction as soon as it ``appears'' for the first time and no later. The natural density of coprime fractions in the set of reduced fractions may then be computed using well-known facts about Hecke $L$-functions. Furthermore, we draw some connections to the modular group and Heegner points.

Abstract:Let $P$ and $T$ be disjoint sets of prime numbers with $T$ finite. A simple formula is given for the natural density of the set of square-free numbers which are divisible by all of the primes in $T$ and by none of the primes in $P$. If $P$ is the set of primes congruent to $r$ modulo $m$ (where $m$ and $r$ are relatively prime numbers), then this natural density is shown to be $0$.

Abstract:Abstract Let K be a cyclic number field of odd degree over $${\mathbb {Q}}$$ Q with odd narrow class number, such that 2 is inert in $$K/{\mathbb {Q}}$$ K / Q . We define a family of number fields $$\{K(p)\}_p$$ { K ( p ) } p , depending on K and indexed by the rational primes p that split completely in $$K/{\mathbb {Q}}$$ K / Q , in which p is always ramified of degree 2. Conditional on a standard conjecture on short character sums, the density of such rational primes p that exhibit one of two possible ramified factorizations in $$K(p)/{\mathbb {Q}}$$ K ( p ) / Q is strictly between 0 and 1 and is given explicitly as a formula in terms of the degree of the extension $$K/{\mathbb {Q}}$$ K / Q . Our results are unconditional in the cubic case. Our proof relies on a detailed study of the joint distribution of spins of prime ideals.

Abstract:We consider the expected value of $\mbox{Tr}(\Theta_C^n)$ where $C$ runs over a thin family of $r$-cyclic covers of $\mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{F}_q}$ for any $r$. We obtain many lower order terms dependent on the divisors of $r$. We use these results to calculate the one-level density of the family and hypothesize a refined one-level density result.

Abstract:Let $z\ne \pm1,w^2$ be a fixed integer, and let $f(t)\ne g(t)^2$ be a fixed polynomial over the integers. It is shown that the subset of primes $p\geq 2$ such that $z$ and $f(z)$ is a pair of simultaneous primitive roots modulo $p$ has nonzero density in the set of primes. The same analysis generalizes to \textit{admissible} $k$-tuple of polynomials $z$, $f_1(z)$, $f_2(z), \ldots$, $f_k(z)$, such that $f_i(z)\ne g_i(z)^2$, and $k\ll \log p$ is a small integer.

The $p$-adic limits of class numbers in $\mathbb{Z}_p$-towers

Abstract:This article discusses variants of Weber's class number problem in the spirit of arithmetic topology to connect the results of Sinnott--Kisilevsky and Kionke. Let $p$ be a prime number. We first prove the $p$-adic convergence of class numbers in a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of a global field and a similar result in a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-cover of a compact 3-manifold. Secondly, we establish an explicit formula for the $p$-adic limit of the $p$-power-th cyclic resultants of a polynomial using roots of unity of orders prime to $p$, the $p$-adic logarithm, and the Iwasawa invariants. Finally, we give thorough investigations of torus knots, twist knots, and elliptic curves; we complete the list of the cases with $p$-adic limits being in $\mathbb{Z}$ and find the cases such that the base $p$-class numbers are small and $\nu$'s are arbitrarily large.

Abstract:We establish limit laws for the distribution in small intervals of the roots of the quadratic congruence $\mu^2 \equiv D \bmod m$, with $D > 0$ square-free and $D\not\equiv 1 \bmod 4$. This is achieved by translating the problem to convergence of certain geodesic random line processes in the hyperbolic plane. This geometric interpretation allows us in particular to derive an explicit expression for the pair correlation density of the roots.

Abstract:We give a formula for the density of $0$ in the sequence of generalized Motzkin numbers, $M^{a,b}_n$, modulo a prime, $p$, in terms of the first $p$ generalized central trinomial coefficients $T^{a,b}_n\mod p$ (with $n<p$). We also prove that $T^{a,b}_{p-1-n}\equiv (b^2-4a^2)^{\frac{p-1}{2}-n}T^{a,b}_n\mod p$ in order to obtain a new lower bound of $\frac{2}{p(p-1)}$ for the density of $0$ in $M_n\mod p$, as well as a couple other applications including showing a novel symmetry of the first $p-2$ Motzkin numbers of independent interest: $M^{a,b}_{p-3-n}\equiv (b^2-4a^2)^{\frac{p-3}{2}-n}M^{a,b}_n\mod p$.

Abstract:We make many new observations on primitive roots modulo primes.For an odd prime p and an integer c,we establish a theorem concerning ∑g(g+c/p),where g runs over all the primitive roots modulo p among 1,…,p-1,and (·/p) denotes the Legendre symbol.On the basis of our numerical computations,we formulate 35 conjectures involving primitive roots modulo primes.For example,we conjecture that for any prime p there is a primitive root g ＜ p modulo p with g-1 a square,and that for any prime p ＞ 3 there is a prime q ＜ p with the Bernoulli number Bq-1 a primitive root modulo p.We also make related observations on quadratic nonresidues modulo primes and primitive prime divisors of some combinatorial sequences.For example,based on heuristic arguments we conjecture that for any prime p ＞ 3 there exists a Fibonacci number Fk ＜ p/2 which is a quadratic nonresidue modulo p;this implies that there is a deterministic polynomial time algorithm to find square roots of quadratic residues modulo a prime p ＞ 3.
On the degree of polynomials computing square roots mod p

Abstract:For an odd prime $p$, we say $f(X) \in {\mathbb F}_p[X]$ computes square roots in $\mathbb F_p$ if, for all nonzero perfect squares $a \in \mathbb F_p$, we have $f(a)^2 = a$. When $p \equiv 3 \mod 4$, it is well known that $f(X) = X^{(p+1)/4}$ computes square roots. This degree is surprisingly low (and in fact lowest possible), since we have specified $(p-1)/2$ evaluations (up to sign) of the polynomial $f(X)$. On the other hand, for $p \equiv 1 \mod 4$ there was previously no nontrivial bound known on the lowest degree of a polynomial computing square roots in $\mathbb F_p$; it could have been anywhere between $\frac{p}{4}$ and $\frac{p}{2}$. We show that for all $p \equiv 1 \mod 4$, the degree of a polynomial computing square roots has degree at least $p/3$. Our main new ingredient is a general lemma which may be of independent interest: powers of a low degree polynomial cannot have too many consecutive zero coefficients. The proof method also yields a robust version: any polynomial that computes square roots for 99\% of the squares also has degree almost $p/3$. In the other direction, a result of Agou, Deliglése, and Nicolas (Designs, Codes, and Cryptography, 2003) shows that for infinitely many $p \equiv 1 \mod 4$, the degree of a polynomial computing square roots can be as small as $3p/8$.

Abstract:Modulo a prime number, we define semi-primitive roots as the square of primitive roots. We present a method for calculating primitive roots from quadratic residues, including semi-primitive roots. We then present progressions that generate primitive and semi-primitive roots, and deduce an algorithm to obtain the full set of primitive roots without any GCD calculation. Next, we present a method for determining irreducible quadratic forms with arbitrarily large conjectured asymptotic density of primes (after Shanks, [1][2]). To this end, we propose an algorithm for calculating the square root modulo p, based on the Tonelli-Shanks algorithm [4].

One-level densities in families of Grössencharakters associated to CM elliptic curves

Abstract:We study the low-lying zeros of a family of $L$-functions attached to the CM elliptic curves $E_d \;:\; y^2 = x^3 - dx$, for each odd and square-free integer $d$. Writing the $L$-function of $E_d$ as $L(s-\frac12, \xi_d)$ for the appropriate Grössencharakter $\xi_d$ of conductor $\mathfrak{f}_d$, the family $\mathcal{F}_d$ is defined as the family of $L$-functions attached to the Grössencharakters $\xi_{d,k}$, where for each integer $k \geq 1$, $\xi_{d, k}$ denotes the primitive character inducing $\xi_d^k$. We observe that $25\%$ of the functions in $\mathcal{F}_d$ have negative root number. This makes the symmetry type of the family (unitary, symplectic or orthogonal) somewhat mysterious, as none of the symmetry types would lead to this proportion. We give an asymptotic expression for the one-level density in the family of $L$-functions in $\mathcal{F}_{d}$ with conductor at most $K^2 \mathrm{N} (\mathfrak{f}_d)$, and find that $\mathcal{F}_d$ breaks down into two natural subfamilies; namely, a symplectic family ($L(s, \xi_{d,k})$ for $k$ even) and an orthogonal family ($L(s, \xi_{d,k})$ for $k$ odd). For $k$ odd, $\mathcal{F}_d$ is in fact a subfamily of the automorphic forms of fixed level $4 \mathrm{N} (\mathfrak{f}_d )$, and even weight $k+1$, and this larger family also has orthogonal symmetry. Finally, we compute explicit lower order terms in decreasing powers of $\log (K^2 \mathrm{N} (\mathfrak{f}_d) )$ for each case.

Abstract:Suppose that $p$ is an odd prime and $g>1$ is a primitive root modulo $p$. Let $M$ be a number field contained in the $p$-th cyclotomic field. Girstmair found a surprising relation between the relative class number of $M$ and the digits of $1/p$ in base $g$. In this paper, we consider an analogue of Girstmair's formula in function fields. Suppose that $P \in \mathbb{F}_q[T]$ is monic irreducible and $G \in \mathbb{F}_q[T]$ is a primitive root modulo $P$. Let $L$ be an extension field of $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$ contained in the $P$-th cyclotomic function field. The goal of this paper is to give relations between the plus and minus parts of the divisor class number of $L$ and the digits of $1/P$ in base $G$.

On Artin's Primitive Root Conjecture for Function Fields over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$

Abstract:In 1927, E. Artin proposed a conjecture for the natural density of primes $p$ for which $g$ generates $(\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z})^\times$. By carefully observing numerical deviations from Artin's originally predicted asymptotic, Derrick and Emma Lehmer (1957) identified the need for an additional correction factor; leading to a modified conjecture which was eventually proved to be correct by Hooley (1967) under the assumption of the generalised Riemann hypothesis. An appropriate analogue of Artin's primitive root conjecture may moreover be formulated for an algebraic function field $K$ of $r$ variables over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. Relying on a soon to be established theorem of Weil (1948), Bilharz (1937) provided a proof in the particular case that $K$ is a global function field (i.e. $r=1$), which is correct under the assumption that $g \in K$ is a $\textit{geometric}$ element. Under these same assumptions, Pappalardi and Shparlinski (1995) established a quantitative version of Bilharz's result. In this paper we build upon these works by both generalizing to function fields in $r$ variables over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ and removing the assumption that $g \in K$ is geometric; thereby completing a proof of Artin's primitive root conjecture for function fields over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. In doing so, we moreover identify an interesting correction factor which emerges when $g$ is not geometric. A crucial feature of our work is an exponential sum estimate over varieties that we derive from Weil's Theorem.
