Abstract:We show that under very mild conditions on a measure $\mu$ on the real line, the span of $\{x^n\}_{n=j}^{\infty}$ is dense in $L^2(\mu)$ for any $j\in\mathbb{N}$. We also present a slightly weaker result with an interesting proof that uses Sobolev orthogonality.

Abstract:The Mahler measure of a polynomial is a measure of complexity formed by taking the modulus of the leading coefficient times the modulus of the product of its roots outside the unit circle. The roots of a real degree N polynomial chosen uniformly from the set of polynomials of Mahler measure at most 1 yield a Pfaffian point process on the complex plane. When N is large, with probability tending to 1, the roots tend to the unit circle, and we investigate the asymptotics of the scaled kernel in a neighborhood of a point on the unit circle. When this point is away from the real axis (on which there is a positive probability of finding a root) the scaled process degenerates to a determinantal point process with the same local statistics (i.e. scalar kernel) as the limiting process formed from the roots of complex polynomials chosen uniformly from the set of polynomials of Mahler measure at most 1. Three new matrix kernels appear in a neighborhood of ±1 which encode information about the correlations between real roots, between complex roots and between real and complex roots. Away from the unit circle, the kernels converge to new limiting kernels, which imply among other things that the expected number of roots in any open subset of C disjoint from the unit circle converges to a positive number. We also give ensembles with identical statistics drawn from two-dimensional electrostatics with potential theoretic weights, and normal matrices chosen with regard to their topological entropy as actions on Euclidean space.

Abstract:Let $\gamma(t)=(P_1(t),\ldots,P_n(t))$ where $P_i$ is a real polynomial with zero constant term for each $1\leq i\leq n$. We will show the existence of the configuration $\{x,x+\gamma(t)\}$ in sets of positive density $\epsilon$ in $[0,1]^n$ with a gap estimate $t\geq \delta(\epsilon)$ when $P_i$'s are arbitrary, and in $[0,N]^n$ with a gap estimate $t\geq \delta(\epsilon)N^n$ when $P_i$'s are of distinct degrees where $\delta(\epsilon)=\exp\left(-\exp\left(c\epsilon^{-4}\right)\right)$ and $c$ only depends on $\gamma$. To prove these two results, decay estimates of certain oscillatory integral operators and Bourgain's reduction are primarily utilised. For the first result, dimension-reducing arguments are also required to handle the linear dependency. For the second one, we will prove a stronger result instead, since then an anisotropic rescaling is allowed in the proof to eliminate the dependence of the decay estimate on $N$. And as a byproduct, using the strategy token to prove the latter case, we extend the corner-type Roth theorem previously proven by the first author and Guo.

Abstract:We prove a polynomial Bogolyubov type lemma for the special linear group over finite fields. Specifically, we show that there exists an absolute constant $C>0,$ such that if $A$ is a density $\alpha$ subset of the special linear group, then the set $AA^{-1}AA^{-1}$ contains a subgroup $H$ of density $\alpha^C$. Moreover, this subgroup is isomorphic to a special linear group of a smaller rank. We also show that if $A$ is an approximate subgroups then it can be covered by the union of few cosets of $H$. Our proof makes use of the Gurevich--Howe notion of tensor rank, and of a strengthened Bonami type Lemma for global functions on the bilinear scheme. We also present applications to spectral bounds for global convolution operators, global product free sets, and covering numbers corresponding to global sets.

Abstract:The conjectured squarefree density of an integral polynomial P in s variables is an Euler product SP which can be considered as a product of local densities. We show that a necessary and sufficient condition for SP to be 0 when P∈Z(X1,...,Xs) is a polynomial in s variables over the integers, is that either there is a prime p such that the values of P at all integer points are divisible by p2 or the polynomial is not squarefree as a polynomial. We also show that generally the upper squarefree density DP satisfies DP⩽SP .

Abstract:Let $\nu$ be a rotation invariant Borel probability measure on the complex plane having moments of all orders. Given a positive integer $q$, it is proved that the space of $\nu$-square integrable $q$-analytic functions is the closure of $q$-analytic polynomials, and in particular it is a Hilbert space. We establish a general formula for the corresponding polyanalytic reproducing kernel. New examples are given and all known examples, including those of the analytic case are covered. In particular, weighted Bergman and Fock type spaces of polyanalytic functions are introduced. Our results have a higher dimensional generalization for measure on ${\mathbb C}^p$ which are in rotation invariant with respect to each coordinate.

Abstract:We prove some general Sobolev-Orlicz, Nash and Faber-Krahn inequalities for positive operators of given ultracontractive norms of the spectral projectors on ]0, lambda]. For invariant operators on coverings of finite simplicial complexes this "ultracontractive spectral decay" is equivalent to von-Neumann's spectral density function. This allows in the polynomial decay case to relate the Novikov-Shubin numbers of such coverings to Sobolev inequalities on exact $\ell^2$-cochains, and to the vanishing of the torsion of the $\ell^{p,2}$-cohomology for some $p \geq 2$.

Abstract:Consider a monic polynomial of degree $n$ whose subleading coefficients are independent, identically distributed, nondegenerate random variables having zero mean, unit variance, and finite moments of all orders, and let $m \geq 0$ be a fixed integer. We prove that such a random monic polynomial has exactly $m$ real zeros with probability $n^{-3/4+o(1)}$ as $n\to \infty$ through integers of the same parity as $m$. More generally, we determine conditions under which a similar asymptotic formula describes the corresponding probability for families of random real polynomials with multiple fixed coefficients. Our work extends well-known universality results of Dembo, Poonen, Shao, and Zeitouni, who considered the family of real polynomials with all coefficients random. As a number-theoretic consequence of these results, we deduce that an algebraic integer $\alpha$ of degree $n$ has exactly $m$ real Galois conjugates with probability $n^{-3/4+o(1)}$, when such $\alpha$ are ordered by the heights of their minimal polynomials.

Abstract:We introduce and study the algebraic, analytic and lattice properties of regular homogeneous polynomials and holomorphic functions on complex Banach lattices. We show that the theory of power series with regular terms is closer to the theory of functions of several complex variables than the theory of holomorphic functions on Banach spaces. We extend the concept of the Bohr radius to Banach lattices and show that it provides us with a lower bound for the ratio between the radius of regular convergence and the radius of convergence of a regular holomorphic function. This allows us to show that in finite dimensions the radius of convergence of the Taylor series of a holomorphic function coincides with the radius of convergence of its monomial expansion but that on $\ell_p$ these two radii can be radically different.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of the algebraic overshear density property which implies both the algebraic notion of flexibility and the holomorphic notion of the density property. We investigate basic consequences of this stronger property, and propose further research directions in this borderland between affine algebraic geometry and elliptic holomorphic geometry. As an application, we show that any smoothly bordered Riemann surface with finitely many boundary components that is embedded in a complex affine surface with the algebraic overshear density property admits a proper holomorphic embedding.

Abstract:We demonstrate that the phenomenon of popular differences (aka the phenomenon of large intersections) holds for natural families of polynomial patterns in rings of integers of number fields. If $K$ is a number field with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ and $E \subseteq \mathcal{O}_K$ has positive upper Banach density $d^*(E) = \delta > 0$, we show, inter alia: 1. If $p(x) \in K[x]$ is an intersective $\mathcal{O}_K$-valued polynomial and $r, s \in \mathcal{O}_K$ are distinct and nonzero, then for any $\varepsilon > 0$, the set of $n \in \mathcal{O}_K$ such that \[ d^* \left( \{ x \in \mathcal{O}_K : \{x, x + rp(n), x + sp(n)\} \subseteq E \} \right) > \delta^3 - \varepsilon. \] is syndetic. Moreover, if $\frac{s}{r} \in \mathbb{Q}$, then there are syndetically many $n \in \mathcal{O}_K$ such that \[ d^* \left( \{ x \in \mathcal{O}_K : \{x, x + rp(n), x + sp(n), x + (r+s)p(n)\} \subseteq E \} \right) > \delta^4 - \varepsilon. \] 2. If $\{p_1, \dots, p_k\} \subseteq K[x]$ is a jointly intersective family of linearly independent $\mathcal{O}_K$-valued polynomials, then the set of $n \in \mathcal{O}_K$ such that \[ d^* \left( \{ x \in \mathcal{O}_K : \{x, x + p_1(n), \dots, x + p_k(n)\} \subseteq E \} \right)> \delta^{k+1} - \varepsilon \] is syndetic. These two results generalize and extend previous work of Frantzikinakis and Kra on polynomial configurations in $\mathbb{Z}$ and build upon recent work of the authors and Best on linear patterns in general abelian groups. The above combinatorial results follow from multiple recurrence results in ergodic theory, which require a sharpening of existing tools for handling polynomial multiple ergodic averages. A key advancement made in this paper is a new result on the equidistribution of polynomial orbits in nilmanifolds, which can be seen as a far-reaching generalization of Weyl's equidistribution theorem.

Abstract:Using the ratios theorems, we calculate the leading order terms in $N$ for the following averages of the characteristic polynomial and its derivative: $\left< \left|\Lambda_A(1 )\right| ^{r} \frac{ \Lambda_A'(\mathrm{e}^{\mathrm{i} \phi}) }{ \Lambda_A(\mathrm{e}^{\mathrm{i} \phi})} \right>_{SO(2N)}$ and $\left< \left|\Lambda_A(1 )\right| ^{r} \frac{ \Lambda_A'(\mathrm{e}^{\mathrm{i} \phi}) }{ \Lambda_A(\mathrm{e}^{\mathrm{i} \phi})} \right>_{USp(2N)}$. Our expression, derived for integer $r$, permits analytic continuation in $r$ and we conjecture that this agrees with the above averages for non-integer exponents. We use this result to obtain an expression for the one level density of the `excised ensemble', a subensemble of $SO(2N)$, to next-to-leading order in $N$. We then present the analogous calculation for the one level density of quadratic twists of elliptic curve $L$-functions, taking into account a number theoretical bound on the central values of the $L$-functions. The method we use to calculate the above random matrix averages uses the contour integral form of the ratios theorems, which are a key tool in the growing literature on averages of characteristic polynomials and their derivatives, and as we evaluate the next-to-leading term for large matrix size $N$, this leads to some multi-dimensional contour integrals that are slightly asymmetric in the integration variables, which might be useful in other work.

Abstract:With operators on formal series in $x_i$, $1\leq i\leq N$, which are symmetric in $N-1$ of the $x_i$, probability measures can be studied through Bessel generating functions. These operators are used with the Dunkl transform on the Bessel generating functions of a sequence of probability measures $\{\mu_N\}_{N\geq 1}$ to get a Law of Large Numbers as $N$, the number of variables, goes to infinity while $\beta$ is constant. Also, formal power series are used to express the results. However, we consider when the limits of partial derivatives involving any number of distinct $x_i$ of the logarithms of the Bessel generating functions at $0$ can be nonzero. Then, the free cumulant of $\{\mu_N\}_{N\geq 1}$ of order $k$ is a linear combination of the limits of the order $k$ partial derivatives.
Norm of matrix-valued polynomials in random unitaries and permutations

Abstract:We consider a non-commutative polynomial in several independent $N$-dimensional random unitary matrices, uniformly distributed over the unitary, orthogonal or symmetric groups, and assume that the coefficients are $n$-dimensional matrices. The main purpose of this paper is to study the operator norm of this random non-commutative polynomial. We compare it with its counterpart where the the random unitary matrices are replaced by the unitary generators of the free group von Neumann algebra. Our first result is that these two norms are overwhelmingly close to each other in the large $N$ limit, and this estimate is uniform over all matrix coefficients as long as $n \le\exp (N^\alpha)$ for some explicit $\alpha >0$. Such results had been obtained by very different techniques for various regimes, all falling in the category $n\ll N$. Our result provides a new proof of the Peterson-Thom conjecture. Our second result is a universal quantitative lower bound for the operator norm of polynomials in independent $N$-dimensional random unitary and permutation matrices with coefficients in an arbitrary $C^*$-algebra. A variant of this result for permutation matrices generalizes the Alon-Boppana lower bound in two directions. Firstly, it applies for arbitrary polynomials and not only linear polynomials, and secondly, it applies for coefficients of an arbitrary $C^*$-algebra with non-negative joint moments and not only for non-negative real numbers.

Pointwise convergence of bilinear polynomial averages over the primes

Abstract:We show that on a $\sigma$-finite measure preserving system $X = (X,\nu, T)$, the non-conventional ergodic averages $$ \mathbb{E}_{n \in [N]} \Lambda(n) f(T^n x) g(T^{P(n)} x)$$ converge pointwise almost everywhere for $f \in L^{p_1}(X)$, $g \in L^{p_2}(X)$, and $1/p_1 + 1/p_2 \leq 1$, where $P$ is a polynomial with integer coefficients of degree at least $2$. This had previously been established with the von Mangoldt weight $\Lambda$ replaced by the constant weight $1$ by the first and third authors with Mirek, and by the Möbius weight $\mu$ by the fourth author. The proof is based on combining tools from both of these papers, together with several Gowers norm and polynomial averaging operator estimates on approximants to the von Mangoldt function of ''Cramér'' and ''Heath-Brown'' type.

A strong law of large numbers for real roots of random polynomials

Abstract:We consider random polynomials $p_n(x)=\xi_0+\xi_1+\dots+\xi_n x^n$ whose coefficients are independent and identically distributed with zero mean, unit variance, and bounded $(2+\epsilon)^{th}$ moment (for some $\epsilon>0$), also known as the Kac polynomials. Let $N_n$ denote the number of real roots of $p_n$. In this paper, motivated by a question from Igor Pritsker, we prove that almost surely the following convergence holds: \begin{eqnarray*} \lim_{n\to\infty} \frac{N_n([-1,1])}{\log n} &=& \frac 1 \pi. \end{eqnarray*} This convergence could be viewed as a local strong law for the real roots. The main ingredient in the proof is a set of maximal inequalities that reduces the proof to proving convergence along lacunary subsequences, which in turn follows from a recent concentration estimate of Can--Nguyen.

Revisiting mean-square approximation by polynomials in the unit disk

Abstract:For a positive finite Borel measure $\mu$ compactly supported in the complex plane, the space $\mathcal{P}^2(\mu)$ is the closure of the analytic polynomials in the Lebesgue space $L^2(\mu)$. According to Thomson's famous result, any space $\mathcal{P}^2(\mu)$ decomposes as an orthogonal sum of pieces which are essentially analytic, and a residual $L^2$-space. We study the structure of this decomposition for a class of Borel measures $\mu$ supported on the closed unit disk for which the part $\mu_\mathbb{D}$, living in the open disk $\mathbb{D}$, is radial and decreases at least exponentially fast near the boundary of the disk. For the considered class of measures, we give a precise form of the Thomson decompsition. In particular, we confirm a conjecture of Kriete and MacCluer from 1990, which gives an analog to Szegö's classical theorem.

Abstract:In this work, we study asymptotic zero distribution of random multi-variable polynomials which are random linear combinations $\sum_{j}a_jP_j(z)$ with i.i.d coefficients relative to a basis of orthonormal polynomials $\{P_j\}_j$ induced by a multi-circular weight function $Q$ satisfying suitable smoothness and growth conditions. In complex dimension $m\geq3$, we prove that $\Bbb{E}[(\log(1+|a_j|))^m]<\infty$ is a necessary and sufficient condition for normalized zero currents of random polynomials to be almost surely asymptotic to the (deterministic) extremal current $dd^cV_{Q}.$ In addition, in complex dimension one, we consider random linear combinations of orthonormal polynomials with respect to a regular measure in the sense of Stahl \& Totik and we prove similar results in this setting.
