Abstract:We propose a simple theoretical model referred to as the {\it two-band model} to realize both a large Seebeck coefficient and high electrical conductivity, resulting in a high thermoelectric (TE) power factor ($PF$). Using the Kubo--Luttinger linear response theory, we apply this model to the TE response of an FeSe thin film reported by Shimizu {\it et al.} to show a high $PF$ with strong temperature dependence. The effects of superconducting fluctuations and excitonic correlations are found to not be critical.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to achieve a high thermoelectric power factor (PF) in iron - selenium (FeSe) thin films. Specifically, the author proposes a simplified theoretical model - the two - band model, aiming to simultaneously achieve a large Seebeck coefficient (S) and high electrical conductivity (\(L_{11}\)), thereby obtaining a high thermoelectric power factor (PF). By applying this model to the experimental data of FeSe thin films, the author shows that this material has a high PF in a wide temperature range, and its value has a strong dependence on temperature. The key points of the paper are as follows: 1. **Background and Motivation**: - With the increasing demand of society for energy harvesting technologies, the development of high - performance thermoelectric materials has become a research hotspot. - The performance of thermoelectric materials is determined by its power factor \(PF = L_{11}S^{2}\) and dimensionless figure of merit \(ZT=\frac{PF}{\lambda}T\), where \(L_{11}\) is electrical conductivity, \(S\) is the Seebeck coefficient, and \(\lambda\) is thermal conductivity. - It is very difficult to improve the performance of thermoelectric materials because \(PF\) and \(ZT\) are determined by three inter - related physical quantities. 2. **Proposed Model**: - The author proposes a two - band model to achieve a high \(PF\) by adjusting the electronic states. - In this model, the energy spacing \(\Delta\) between the two energy bands is crucial for achieving a high \(PF\). - The effects of electron - phonon scattering and impurity scattering are considered in the model. 3. **Experimental Results and Model Verification**: - The author applies the two - band model to analyze the experimental data of FeSe thin films reported by Shimizu et al. - The experimental results show that the FeSe thin films exhibit an abnormally high \(PF\) value under the action of a vertical electric field \(E_{\perp}\), especially at around 100 K, where \(PF\) reaches about 500 mW/(m·K²). - By adjusting the parameters in the model, such as the energy spacing \(\Delta\) and the chemical potential \(\mu\), the author successfully reproduces the experimental data. 4. **Discussion**: - The author explores the effects of superconducting fluctuations and exciton - related effects on the thermoelectric response of FeSe thin films and finds that these effects are not crucial for achieving a high \(PF\). - The author also points out that a similar two - band structure may exist in other nanoscale materials, such as nanowires and nanotubes, and these materials also exhibit sub - band structures due to the quantum confinement effect. 5. **Conclusion**: - Through the two - band model, the author successfully explains the high \(PF\) exhibited by FeSe thin films under the action of a vertical electric field. - This model not only helps to understand the thermoelectric properties of FeSe thin films but also provides theoretical guidance for the development of new high - performance thermoelectric materials. In conclusion, this paper solves the problem of how to achieve a high thermoelectric power factor in FeSe thin films by proposing and verifying the two - band model, and provides a theoretical basis for further research.
