Abstract:The structurally simplest Fe-based superconductor FeSe with a critical temperature T-c approximate to 8.5 K displays a breaking of the fourfold rotational symmetry at a temperature T-s approximate to 87 K. We investigate the electronic properties of FeSe using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), magnetization, and electrical transport measurements. The results indicate two energy scales: (i) T* approximate to 75 K, denoted by an onset of electron-hole asymmetry in STS, enhanced spin fluctuations, and increased positive magnetoresistance;and (ii) T** approximate to 22-30 K, marked by the opening up of a partial gap of about 8 meV in STS and a recovery of Kohler's rule. Our results reveal the onset of an incipient ordering mode at T* and its nucleation below T**. The ordering mode observed here, both in spin as well as charge channels, suggests a coupling between the spins with charge, orbital, or pocket degrees of freedom.
Quasi-two-dimensional Superconductivity in FeSe0.3Te0.7 Thin Films and Electric-Field Modulation of Superconducting Transition.

Abstract:We report the structural and superconducting properties of FeSe0.3Te0.7 (FST) thin films with different thicknesses grown on ferroelectric Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.7Ti0.3O3 substrates. It was shown that the FST films undergo biaxial tensile strains which are fully relaxed for films with thicknesses above 200 nm. Electrical transport measurements reveal that the ultrathin films exhibit an insulating behavior and superconductivity appears for thicker films with Tc saturated above 200 nm. The current-voltage curves around the superconducting transition follow the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition behavior and the resistance-temperature curves can be described by the Halperin–Nelson relation, revealing quasi-two-dimensional phase fluctuation in FST thin films. The Ginzburg number decreases with increasing film thickness indicating the decrease of the strength of thermal fluctuations. Upon applying electric field to the heterostructure, Tc of FST thin film increases due to the reduction of the tensile strain in FST. This work sheds light on the superconductivity, strain effect as well as electric-field modulation of superconductivity in FST films.
Evolution of Transport Properties in FeSe Thin Flakes with Thickness Approaching the Two-Dimensional Limit

Abstract:Electronic properties of FeSe can be tuned by various routes. Here, we present a comprehensive study on the evolution of the superconductivity and nematicity in FeSe with thickness from bulk single crystal down to bilayer (similar to 1.1 nm) through exfoliation. With decreasing flake thickness, both the structural transition temperature T-s and the superconducting transition temperature T-c(zero) are greatly suppressed. The magnetic field (B) dependence of Hall resistance R-xy at 15 K changes from B-nonlinear to B-linear behavior up to 9 T, as the thickness (d) is reduced to 13 nm. T-c is linearly dependent on the inverse of flake thickness (1/d) when d <= 13 nm, and a clear drop of T-c appears with thickness smaller than 27 nm. The I-V characteristic curves in ultrathin flakes reveal the signature of Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition, indicating the presence of two-dimensional superconductivity. Anisotropic magnetoresistance measurements further support 2D superconductivity in few-layer FeSe. Increase of disorder scattering, anisotropic strains, and dimensionality effect with reducing the thickness of FeSe flakes might be taken into account for understanding these behaviors. Our study provides systematic insights into the evolution of the superconducting properties, structural transition, and Hall resistance of a superconductor FeSe with flakes thickness and provides an effective way to find two-dimensional superconductivity as well as other 2D novel phenomena.
Impurity Scattering Effects on the Superconducting Properties and the Tetragonal-to-orthorhombic Phase Transition in FeSe

Abstract:A comprehensive study of the doping dependence of the phase diagram of FeSe-based superconductors is still required due to the lack of a clean and systematic means of doping control. Here, we report on the magneto-optical imaging, thermodynamic and transport properties, as well as in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies of impurity scattering in stoichiometric FeSe single crystals. Co doping at the Fe site is found to decrease the superconducting transition temperature $({T}_{c})$. The upper critical field and specific heat all indicate a possible multiband superconductivity with strong coupling in the Co-doped system. A remarkable feature in FeSe is that its temperature dependent resistivity exhibits a wide hump at high temperatures, a signature of a crossover from a semiconductinglike behavior to metallic behavior. A structural tetragonal-to-orthorhombic phase transition $({T}_{s})$ (a consequence of the electronic nematicity) is suppressed by either physical or chemical pressures. Due to the reconstruction of the Fermi surface at ${T}_{s}$, specific heat anomalies at ${T}_{s}$ present $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}{C}_{p}/{T}_{s}\ensuremath{\approx}{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{n}$, being ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{n}$ the Sommerfield coefficient at low temperature. This reflect an additional electronic instability in the ${\mathrm{FeSe}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{S}}_{x}$ system. ARPES data between 180 and 282 K indicates the existence of a chemical potential shift with increasing thermal excitations, resulting in a change of the Fermi-surface topology and exhibiting a semimetal behavior. We found that the temperature-induced Lifshitz transition is much higher than the temperature for the nematic order.

Abstract:The physics of the crossover between weak-coupling Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) and strong-coupling Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) limits gives a unified framework of quantum-bound (superfluid) states of interacting fermions. This crossover has been studied in the ultracold atomic systems, but is extremely difficult to be realized for electrons in solids. Recently, the superconducting semimetal FeSe with a transition temperature Tc=8.5 K has been found to be deep inside the BCS–BEC crossover regime. Here we report experimental signatures of preformed Cooper pairing in FeSe, whose energy scale is comparable to the Fermi energies. In stark contrast to usual superconductors, large non-linear diamagnetism by far exceeding the standard Gaussian superconducting fluctuations is observed below T*∼20 K, providing thermodynamic evidence for prevailing phase fluctuations of superconductivity. Nuclear magnetic resonance and transport data give evidence of pseudogap formation at ∼T*. The multiband superconductivity along with electron–hole compensation in FeSe may highlight a novel aspect of the BCS–BEC crossover physics.

Abstract:Iron selenide (FeSe) - the structurally simplest iron-based superconductor, has attracted tremendous interest in the past years. While the transition temperature (Tc) of bulk FeSe is $\sim$ 8 K, it can be significantly enhanced to 40 - 50 K by various ways of electron doping. However, the underlying physics for such great enhancement of Tc and so the Cooper pairing mechanism still remain puzzles. Here, we report a systematic study of the superconducting- and normal-state properties of FeSe films via ionic liquid gating. With fine tuning, Tc evolves continuously from below 10 K to above 40 K; in situ two-coil mutual inductance measurements unambiguously confirm the gating is a uniform bulk effect. Close to Tc, the normal-state resistivity shows a linear dependence on temperature and the linearity extends to lower temperatures with the superconductivity suppressed by high magnetic fields. At high fields, the normal-state magnetoresistance exhibits a linear-in-field dependence and obeys a simple scaling relation between applied field and temperature. Consistent behaviors are observed for different-Tc states throughout the gating process, suggesting the pairing mechanism very likely remains the same from low- to high-Tc state. Importantly, the coefficient of the linear-in-temperature resistivity is positively correlated with Tc, similarly to the observations in cuprates, Bechgaard salts and iron pnictide superconductors. Our study points to a short-range antiferromagnetic exchange interaction mediated pairing mechanism in FeSe.

Abstract:Heterogeneous superconductivity onset is a common phenomenon in high-$T_c$ superconductors of both the cuprate and iron-based families. It is manifested by a fairly wide transition from the metallic to zero-resistance state. Usually, in these strongly anisotropic materials, superconductivity (SC) first appears as isolated domains. This leads to anisotropic excess conductivity above $T_c$, and the transport measurements provide valuable information about the SC domain structure deep within the sample. In bulk samples, this anisotropic SC onset gives an approximate average shape of SC grains, while in thin samples it also indicates the average size of SC grains. In this work, both interlayer and intralayer resistivity are measured as a function of temperature in FeSe samples of various thickness. To measure the interlayer resistivity, FeSe mesa structures oriented across the layers were fabricated using FIB. As the sample thickness decreases, a significant increase in superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ is observed : $T_c$ raises from 8 K in bulk material to 12 K in microbridges of thickness $\sim 40$ nm. We apply analytical and numerical calculations to analyze these and earlier data and find the aspect ratio and size of the SC domains in FeSe consistent with our resistivity and diamagnetic response measurements. We propose a simple and fairly accurate method for estimating the aspect ratio of SC domains from $T_c$ anisotropy in samples of various small thickness. The relationship between nematic and superconducting domains in FeSe is discussed. We also generalize the analytical formulas for conductivity in heterogeneous anisotropic superconductors to the case of elongated SC domains of two perpendicular orientations with equal volume fractions, corresponding to the nematic domain structure in various Fe-based superconductors.

Temperature dependence and limiting mechanisms of the upper critical field of FeSe thin films

Abstract:We use magnetoresistance measurements at high magnetic field (B \leq 65 T) and low temperature (T \geq 500 mK) to gain fresh insights into the behavior of the upper critical field, Hc2, in superconducting ultrathin FeSe films of varying degrees of disorder, grown by molecular beam epitaxy on SrTiO3. Measurements of Hc2 across samples with a widely varying superconducting critical temperature (1.2 K \leq Tc \leq 21 K) generically show similar qualitative temperature dependence. We analyze the temperature dependence of Hc2 in the context of Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg (WHH) theory. The analysis yields parameters that indicate a strong Pauli paramagnetic pair-breaking mechanism which is also reflected by pseudo-isotropic superconductivity in the limit of zero temperature. In the lower Tc samples, we observe a spin-orbit scattering driven enhancement of Hc2 above the strongly-coupled Pauli paramagnetic limit. We also observe clear deviations from WHH theory at low temperature, regardless of Tc. We attribute this to the multi-band superconductivity of FeSe and possibly to the emergence of a low temperature, high field superconducting phase.

Abstract:Fermi systems in the cross-over regime between weakly coupled Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) and strongly coupled Bose-Einstein-condensate (BEC) limits are among the most fascinating objects to study the behavior of an assembly of strongly interacting particles. The physics of this cross-over has been of considerable interest both in the fields of condensed matter and ultracold atoms. One of the most challenging issues in this regime is the effect of large spin imbalance on a Fermi system under magnetic fields. Although several exotic physical properties have been predicted theoretically, the experimental realization of such an unusual superconducting state has not been achieved so far. Here we show that pure single crystals of superconducting FeSe offer the possibility to enter the previously unexplored realm where the three energies, Fermi energy εF, superconducting gap Δ, and Zeeman energy, become comparable. Through the superfluid response, transport, thermoelectric response, and spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy, we demonstrate that εF of FeSe is extremely small, with the ratio Δ/εF ~ 1(~0.3) in the electron (hole) band. Moreover, thermal-conductivity measurements give evidence of a distinct phase line below the upper critical field, where the Zeeman energy becomes comparable to εF and Δ. The observation of this field-induced phase provides insights into previously poorly understood aspects of the highly spin-polarized Fermi liquid in the BCS-BEC cross-over regime.

Abstract:Abstract One-unit-cell FeSe films on SrTiO 3 substrates are of great interest owing to significantly enlarged pairing gaps characterized by two coherence peaks at ±10 meV and ±20 meV. In-situ transport measurement is desired to reveal novel properties. Here, we performed in-situ microscale electrical transport and combined scanning tunneling microscopy measurements on continuous one-unit-cell FeSe films with twin boundaries. We observed two spatially coexisting superconducting phases in domains and on boundaries, characterized by distinct superconducting gaps ( $${\Delta }_{1}$$ Δ 1 ~15 meV vs. $${\Delta }_{2}$$ Δ 2 ~10 meV) and pairing temperatures ( T p1 ~52.0 K vs. T p2 ~37.3 K), and correspondingly two-step nonlinear $$V \sim {I}^{\alpha }$$ V ~ I α behavior but a concurrent Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless (BKT)-like transition occurring at $${T}_{{{{{{\rm{BKT}}}}}}}$$ T BKT ~28.7 K. Moreover, the onset transition temperature $${T}_{{{{{{\rm{c}}}}}}}^{{{{{{\rm{onset}}}}}}}$$ T c onset ~54 K and zero-resistivity temperature $${T}_{{{{{{\rm{c}}}}}}}^{{{{{{\rm{zero}}}}}}}$$ T c zero ~31 K are consistent with T p1 and $${T}_{{{{{{\rm{BKT}}}}}}}$$ T BKT , respectively. Our results indicate the broadened superconducting transition in FeSe/SrTiO 3 is related to intrinsic electronic inhomogeneity due to distinct two-gap features and phase fluctuations of two-dimensional superconductivity.

Abstract:In conventional superconductors, very narrow superconducting fluctuation regions are observed above T_c because of the strong overlapping of Cooper pairs in a coherence volume. In the bulk form of iron chalcogenide superconductor FeSe, it is argued that the system may locate in the crossover region of BCS to BEC, indicating a strong superconducting fluctuation. In this respect, we have carried out measurements of magnetization, specific heat and Nernst effect on FeSe single crystals in order to investigate the superconducting fluctuation effect near T_c. The region of diamagnetization induced by superconducting fluctuation seems very narrow above T_c. The crossing point of temperature dependent magnetization curves measured at different magnetic fields, which appears in many systems of cuprate superconductors and is regarded as indication of strong critical fluctuation, is however absent. The magnetization data can be scaled based on the Ginzburg-Landau fluctuation theory for a quasi-two-dimensional system, but the scaling result cannot be described by the theoretical function of the fluctuation theory because of the limited fluctuation regions. The specific heat jump near T_c is rather sharp without the trace of strong superconducting fluctuation. This is also supported by the Nernst effect measurements which indicate a very limited region for vortex motion above T_c. Associated with very small value of Ginzburg number and further analyses, we conclude that the superconducting fluctuation is very weak above T_c in this material. Our results are strongly against the picture of significant phase fluctuation in FeSe single crystals, although the system has a very limited overlapping of Cooper pairs in the coherence volume. This dichotomy provides new insights into the superconducting mechanism when the system is with a dilute superfluid density.

Abstract:In contrast to conventional Fermi liquids where resistivity scales quadratically with temperature, unconventional superconductors usually exhibit a normal-state resistivity that varies as a linear function of temperature ( T -linear) in the low-temperature limit. This phenomenon, termed as the strange metal, has been extensively studied in cuprates and is thought to be intimately linked to superconductivity. A quantitative description of its relationship with superconductivity is, therefore, of great importance for developing further theoretical understanding; however, so far, comprehensive studies are scarce due to the difficulties in realizing a systematic control of the superconducting state. Here we report the observation of a typical strange-metal behaviour in FeSe, namely, T -linear resistivity, linear-in-field magnetoresistance and universal scaling of magnetoresistance. More importantly, when we tune the superconductivity by ionic-liquid gating, the superconducting transition temperature increases from approximately 10 to 45 K, and the T -linear resistivity coefficient exhibits a quadratic dependence on the critical temperature. This is a ubiquitous feature that describes the relation between these parameters in various systems including overdoped cuprates and Bechgaard salts. This suggests that there may be a universal mechanism underlying the T -linear resistivity and unconventional superconductivity.

Lattice Dynamics of Ultrathin FeSe Films on SrTiO3

Abstract:Charge transfer and electron-phonon coupling (EPC) are proposed to be two important constituents associated with enhanced superconductivity in the single unit cell FeSe films on oxide surfaces. Using high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy combined with first-principles calculations, we have explored the lattice dynamics of ultrathin FeSe films grown on SrTiO3. We show that, despite the significant effect from the substrate on the electronic structure and superconductivity of the system, the FeSe phonons in the films are unaffected. The energy dispersion and linewidth associated with the Fe- and Se-derived vibrational modes are thickness- and temperature-independent. Theoretical calculations indicate the crucial role of antiferromagnetic correlation in FeSe to reproduce the experimental phonon dispersion. Importantly, the only detectable change due to the growth of FeSe films is the broadening of the Fuchs-Kliewer (F-K) phonons associated with the lattice vibrations of SrTiO$_3$(001) substrate. If EPC plays any role in the enhancement of film superconductivity, it must be the interfacial coupling between the electrons in FeSe film and the F-K phonons from substrate rather than the phonons of FeSe.

Abstract:Interface enhanced superconductivity at two dimensional limit has become one of most intriguing research directions in condensed matter physics. Here, we report the superconducting properties of ultra-thin FeSe films with the thickness of one unit cell (1-UC) grown on conductive and insulating SrTiO3 (STO) substrates. For the 1-UC FeSe on conductive STO substrate (Nb-STO), the magnetization versus temperature (M-T) measurement shows a drop crossover around 85 K. For the FeSe films on insulating STO substrate, systematic transport measurements were carried out and the sheet resistance of FeSe films exhibits Arrhenius TAFF behavior with a crossover from a single-vortex pinning region to a collective creep region. More intriguing, sign reversal of Hall resistance with temperature is observed, demonstrating a crossover from hole conduction to electron conduction above TC in 1-UC FeSe films.

In both the cuprate and the iron-based high-temperature superconductors, superconductivity is induced by doping charge carriers into the parent compound to suppress the antiferromagnetic state. It is therefore important to establish whether the superconductivity observed in the single-layer sheets of FeSe--the essential building blocks of the Fe-based superconductors--is realized by undergoing a similar transition. Here we report the phase diagram for an FeSe monolayer grown on a SrTiO3 substrate, by tuning the charge carrier concentration over a wide range through an extensive annealing procedure. We identify two distinct phases that compete during the annealing process: the electronic structure of the phase at low doping (N phase) bears a clear resemblance to the antiferromagnetic parent compound of the Fe-based superconductors, whereas the superconducting phase (S phase) emerges with the increase in doping and the suppression of the N phase. By optimizing the carrier concentration, we observe strong indications of superconductivity with a transition temperature of 65±5 K. The wide tunability of the system across different phases makes the FeSe monolayer ideal for investigating not only the physics of superconductivity, but also for studying novel quantum phenomena more generally.

Abstract:A number of recent experiments indicate that the iron-chalcogenide FeSe provides the long-sought possibility to study bulk superconductivity in the cross-over regime between the weakly coupled Bardeen--Cooper--Schrieffer (BCS) pairing and the strongly coupled Bose--Einstein condensation (BEC). We report on $^{77}$Se nuclear magnetic resonance experiments of FeSe, focused on the superconducting phase for strong magnetic fields applied along the $c$ axis, where a distinct state with large spin polarization was reported. We determine this high-field state as bulk superconducting with high spatial homogeneity of the low-energy spin fluctuations. Further, we find that the static spin susceptibility becomes unusually small at temperatures approaching the superconducting state, despite the presence of pronounced spin fluctuations. Taken together, our results clearly indicate that FeSe indeed features an unusual field-induced superconducting state of a highly spin-polarized Fermi liquid in the BCS-BEC crossover regime.

Abstract:Superconductivity emerges in proximity to a nematic phase in most iron-based superconductors. It is therefore important to understand the impact of nematicity on the electronic structure. Orbital assignment and tracking across the nematic phase transition prove to be challenging due to the multiband nature of iron-based superconductors and twinning effects. Here, we report a detailed study of the electronic structure of fully detwinned FeSe across the nematic phase transition using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We clearly observe a nematicity-driven band reconstruction involving dxz, dyz, and dxy orbitals. The nematic energy scale between dxz and dyz bands reaches a maximum of 50 meV at the Brillouin zone corner. We are also able to track the dxz electron pocket across the nematic transition and explain its absence in the nematic state. Our comprehensive data of the electronic structure provide an accurate basis for theoretical models of the superconducting pairing in FeSe.

Abstract:The discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in FeSe/STO has trigged great research interest to reveal a range of exotic physical phenomena in this novel material. Here we present a temperature dependent magnetotransport measurement for ultrathin FeSe/STO films with different thickness and protection layers. Remarkably, a surprising linear magnetoresistance (LMR) is observed around the superconducting transition temperatures but absent otherwise. The experimental LMR can be reproduced by magnetotransport calculations based on a model of magnetic field dependent disorder induced by spin fluctuation. Thus, the observed LMR in coexistence with superconductivity provides the first magnetotransport signature for spin fluctuation around the superconducting transition region in ultrathin FeSe/STO films.
Possible spin-polarized Cooper pairing in high temperature FeSe superconductor

Abstract:Superconductivity and long-range ferromagnetism hardly coexist in a uniform manner. The counter-example has been observed, in uranium-based superconductors for instance, with a coexisting temperature limited to about 1 K. Here, we report the coexistence of high temperature superconductivity and itinerant ferromagnetism in lithium intercalated FeSe flakes. In superconducting samples with transition temperature around 40 K, we observe the anomalous Hall effect with a hysteresis loop in transverse resistivity and a butterfly-like pattern of magneto-resistance. Intriguingly, such ferromagnetism persists down to a temperature at which the zero-field resistance fully vanishes. Furthermore, the superconductivity is enhanced under an in-plane magnetic field, suggestive of the participation of spin-polarized Cooper pairs. The surprising finding underscores a uniform coexistence of the two antagonistic phenomena on a record-high energy scale.

Abstract:We investigated the anisotropic electrical transport and magnetic properties of FeSe0.5Te0.5 single crystals grown by the self-flux method. The in-plane resistivity shows a metallic-like temperature dependence, while the out-of-plane resistivity shows a broad hump with a maximum at around 64 K. The magnetization loops for H//c-axis and H//ab-plane are also different, for example, there is a typical second peak for H//c-axis. The in-plane critical current density is larger than the out-of-plane one. The coherence length and penetration depth were estimated by the Ginzburg–Landau theory. The anisotropic parameter γ depends on the applied magnetic field and the temperature. The coupling of superconducting FeSe(Te) layers and the flux pinning mechanism relevant to anisotropy are also discussed.
