Abstract:In this paper we study a contracting flow of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space ℝ^n+1 with speed f r^α K, where K is the Gauss curvature, r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin, and f is a positive and smooth function. If α≥ n+1, we prove that the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly after normalisation to a soliton, which is a sphere centred at the origin if f ≡ 1. Our argument provides a parabolic proof in the smooth category for the classical Aleksandrov problem, and resolves the dual q-Minkowski problem introduced by Huang, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang (Acta Math. 216 (2016): 325-388), for the case q<0. If α < n+1, corresponding to the case q>0, we also establish the same results for even function f and origin-symmetric initial condition, but for non-symmetric f, counterexample is given for the above smooth convergence.

Abstract:We consider a shrinking flow of smooth, closed, uniformly convex hypersurfaces in (n+1)-dimensional Euclidean space with speed fu^{alpha}{sigma}_n^{beta}, where u is the support function of the hypersurface, alpha, beta are two constants, and beta>0, sigma_n is the n-th symmetric polynomial of the principle curvature radii of the hypersurface. We prove that the flow has a unique smooth and uniformly convex solution for all time, and converges smoothly after normalisation, to a soliton which is a solution of an elliptic equation, when the constants alpha, beta belong to a suitable range, provided the initial hypersuface is origin-symmetric and f is a smooth positive even function on S^n. For the case alpha>= 1+n*beta, beta>0, we prove that the flow converges smoothly after normalisation to a unique smooth solution of an elliptic equation without any constraint on the initial hypersuface and smooth positive function f. When beta=1, our argument provides a uniform proof to the existence of the solutions to the equation of L_p Minkowski problem for p belongs to (-n-1,+infty).

Abstract:Let X be a smooth subvariety of CP^N. We study a flow, called balancing flow, on the space of projectively equivalent embeddings of X, which attempts to deform the given embedding into a balanced one. If L->X is an ample line bundle, considering embeddings via H^0(L^k) gives a sequence of balancing flows. We prove that, provided these flows are started at appropriate points, they converge to Calabi flow for as long as it exists. This result is the parabolic analogue of Donaldson's theorem relating balanced embeddings to metrics with constant scalar curvature [JDG 59(3):479-522, 2001]. In our proof we combine Donaldson's techniques with an asymptotic result of Liu-Ma [arXiv:math/0601260v2] which, as we explain, describes the asymptotic behaviour of the derivative of the map FS\circ Hilb whose fixed points are balanced metrics.

Abstract:Given an embedded cylinder in an arbitrary surface, we give a gauge theoretic definition of the associated Goldman flow, which is a circle action on a dense open subset of the moduli space of equivalence classes of flat SU(2)-connections over the surface. A cylinder in a compact nonorientable surface lifts to two cylinders in the orientable double cover, and the composite flow is the composition of one of the associated flows with the inverse flow of the other. Providing explicit descriptions, we relate the flow on the moduli space of the nonorientable surface with the composite flow on the moduli space of the double cover. We prove that the composite flow preserves a certain Lagrangian submanifold.

Stretched-exponential mixing for surface semiflows and Anosov flows

Abstract:For a surface semiflow that is a suspension of a $ C^{1+\alpha} $ expanding Markov interval map, we prove that, under the assumptions that the roof function is Lipschitz continuous and not cohomologous to a locally constant function, the semiflow exhibits stretched-exponential mixing with respect to the SRB measure. This result extends to hyperbolic skew-product semiflows and hyperbolic attractors. Specifically, codimension-one topologically mixing Anosov flows with Lipschitz continuous stable foliations demonstrate stretched-exponential mixing with respect to their SRB measures.

Singularity of the Spectrum for Smooth Area-Preserving Flows in Genus Two and Translation Surfaces Well Approximated by Cylinders

Abstract:We consider smooth flows preserving a smooth invariant measure, or, equivalently, locally Hamiltonian flows on compact orientable surfaces and show that, when the genus of the surface is two, almost every such locally Hamiltonian flow with two non-degenerate isomorphic saddles has singular spectrum. More in general, singularity of the spectrum holds for special flows over a full measure set of interval exchange transformations with a hyperelliptic permutation (of any number of exchanged intervals), under a roof with symmetric logarithmic singularities. The result is proved using a criterion for singularity based on tightness of Birkhoff sums with exponential tails decay. A key ingredient in the proof, which is of independent interest, is a result on translation surfaces well approximated by single cylinders. We show that for almost every translation surface in any connected component of any stratum there exists a full measure set of directions which can be well approximated by a single cylinder of area arbitrarily close to one. The result, in the special case of the stratum H ( 1 , 1 ) , yields rigidity sets needed for the singularity result.

Stability for the Surface Diffusion Flow

Abstract:We study the global existence and stability of surface diffusion flow (the normal velocity is given by the Laplacian of the mean curvature) of smooth boundaries of subsets of the $n$--dimensional flat torus. More precisely, we show that if a smooth set is ``close enough'' to a strictly stable critical set for the Area functional under a volume constraint, then the surface diffusion flow of its boundary hypersurface exists for all time and asymptotically converges to the boundary of a ``translated'' of the critical set. This result was obtained in dimension $n=3$ by Acerbi, Fusco, Julin and Morini (extending previous results for spheres of Escher, Mayer and Simonett and Elliott and Garcke in dimension $n=2$). Our work generalizes such conclusion to any dimension $n\in\mathbb N$. For sake of clarity, we show all the details in dimension $n=4$ and we list the necessary modifications to the quantities involved in the proof in the general $n$--dimensional case, in the last section.

A uniform ergodic theorem for degenerate flows on the annulus

Abstract:Motivated by the well-known phase-space portrait of the nonlinear pendulum, the purpose of this paper is to obtain convergence rates in the ergodic theorem for flows in the plane that have arbitrarily slow trajectories. Considering bounded periodic trajectories near the heteroclinic orbits, it is shown that despite lacking a spectral gap, there exists a functional space (which is a strict subset of $L^2$) on which time averages converge uniformly to spatial averages (with an explicit rate). The main ingredient of the proof is an estimate of the density of the spectrum of the generator of the flow near zero.

Abstract:For any $C^\infty$, area-preserving Anosov diffeomorphism $f$ of a surface, we show that a suspension flow over $f$ is $C^\infty$-conjugate to a constant-time suspension flow of a hyperbolic automorphism of the two torus if and only if the volume measure is the measure with maximal entropy. We also show that the the metric entropy with respect to the volume measure and the topological entropy of suspension flow over Anosov diffeomorphisms on torus achieve all possible values. Our results fit into two programs related to entropy rigidity and flexibility of Anosov systems.

Abstract:We prove that the geodesic flow on a geometrically finite locally symmetric space of negative curvature is exponentially mixing with respect to the Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure. The approach is based on constructing a suitable anisotropic Banach space on which the infinitesimal generator of the flow admits an essential spectral gap. A key step in the proof involves estimating certain oscillatory integrals against the Patterson-Sullivan measure. For this purpose, we prove a general result of independent interest asserting that measures on $\mathbb{R}^d$ that do not concentrate near proper affine subspaces enjoy polynomial Fourier decay outside of a sparse set of frequencies. As an intermediate step, we show that the $L^q$-dimension ($1<q\leq \infty$) of iterated self-convolutions of such measures tend towards that of the ambient space. Our analysis also yields that the Laplace transform of the correlation function of smooth observables extends meromorphically to the entire complex plane in the convex cocompact case and to a strip of explicit size beyond the imaginary axis in the case the manifold admits cusps.

Abstract:In this paper we show that a geodesic flow of a compact surface without conjugate points of genus greater than one is time-preserving semi-conjugate to a continuous expansive flow which is topologically mixing and has a local product structure. As an application we show that the geodesic flow of a compact surface without conjugate points of genus greater than one has a unique measure of maximal entropy. This gives an alternative proof of Climenhaga-Knieper-War Theorem.

Abstract:By constructing a non-empty domain of discontinuity in a suitable homogeneous space, we prove that every torsion-free projective Anosov subgroup is the monodromy group of a locally homogeneous contact Axiom A dynamical system with a unique basic hyperbolic set on which the flow is conjugate to the refraction flow of Sambarino. Under the assumption of irreducibility, we utilize the work of Stoyanov to establish spectral estimates for the associated complex Ruelle transfer operators, and by way of corollary: exponential mixing, exponentially decaying error term in the prime orbit theorem, and a spectral gap for the Ruelle zeta function. With no irreducibility assumption, results of Dyatlov-Guillarmou imply the global meromorphic continuation of zeta functions with smooth weights, as well as the existence of a discrete spectrum of Ruelle-Pollicott resonances and (co)-resonant states. We apply our results to space-like geodesic flows for the convex cocompact pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of Danciger-Guéritaud-Kassel, and the Benoist-Hilbert geodesic flow for strictly convex real projective manifolds.

Surface diffusion flow near spheres

Abstract:We consider closed immersed hypersurfaces evolving by surface diffusion flow, and perform an analysis based on local and global integral estimates. First we show that a properly immersed stationary (\Delta H \equiv 0) hypersurface in \R^3 or \R^4 with restricted growth of the curvature at infinity and small total tracefree curvature must be an embedded union of umbilic hypersurfaces. Then we prove for surfaces that if the L^2 norm of the tracefree curvature is globally initially small it is monotonic nonincreasing along the flow. We also derive pointwise estimates for all derivatives of the curvature assuming that its L^2 norm is locally small. Using these results we show that if a singularity develops the curvature must concentrate in a definite manner, and prove that a blowup under suitable conditions converges to a nonumbilic embedded stationary surface. We obtain our main result as a consequence: the surface diffusion flow of a surface initially close to a sphere in L^2 is a family of embeddings, exists for all time, and exponentially converges to a round sphere.

Abstract:We provide a new universal real flow of the Hilbert-cubical type. We prove that any real flow can be equivariantly embedded in the translation on $L(\mathbb{R})^\mathbb{N}$, where $L(\mathbb{R})$ denotes the space of $1$-Lipschitz functions $f:\mathbb{R}\to[0,1]$. Furthermore, all those functions in $L(\mathbb{R})^\mathbb{N}$ that are images of such embeddings can be chosen as $C^1$-functions.
An eternal hypersurface flow arising in centro-affine geometry

Abstract:In this paper, the existence and uniqueness for a specific centro-affine invariant hypersurface flow in $R^{n+1}$ are studied, and the corresponding evolutionary processes in both centro-affine and Euclidean settings are explored. It turns out that the flow exhibits similar properties as the standard heat flow. In addition, the long time existence of the flow is investigated, which asserts that the hypersurface governed by the flow converges asymptotically toward an ellipsoid via systematically investigating evolutions of the centro-affine invariants. Furthermore, the classification of the eternal solutions for the flow is provided.

Abstract:Starting with a trivial periodic flow on $\mathbb{S}M$, the unit tangent bundle of a genus two surface, we perform a Dehn-type surgery on the manifold around a tubular neighborhood of a curve on $\mathbb{S}M$ that projects to a self-intersecting closed geodesic on $M$, to get a surgered flow which restricted to the surgery region is ergodic with respect to the volume measure. The surgered flow projects to a map on the surgery track that can be taken to be a linked twist map with oppositely oriented shears which generates the ergodic behavior for sufficiently strong shears in the surgery.
