Abstract:In this paper we study a contracting flow of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space ℝ^n+1 with speed f r^α K, where K is the Gauss curvature, r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin, and f is a positive and smooth function. If α≥ n+1, we prove that the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly after normalisation to a soliton, which is a sphere centred at the origin if f ≡ 1. Our argument provides a parabolic proof in the smooth category for the classical Aleksandrov problem, and resolves the dual q-Minkowski problem introduced by Huang, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang (Acta Math. 216 (2016): 325-388), for the case q<0. If α < n+1, corresponding to the case q>0, we also establish the same results for even function f and origin-symmetric initial condition, but for non-symmetric f, counterexample is given for the above smooth convergence.
Topological characterizations of Morse-Smale flows on surfaces and generic non-Morse-Smale flows

Abstract:It is known that $C^r$ Morse-Smale vector fields form an open dense subset in the space of vector fields on orientable closed surfaces and are structurally stable for any $r \in \mathbb{Z}_{>0}$. In particular, $C^r$ Morse vector fields (i.e. Morse-Smale vector fields without limit cycles) form an open dense subset in the space of $C^r$ gradient vector fields on orientable closed surfaces and are structurally stable. Therefore generic time evaluations of gradient flows on orientable closed surfaces (e.g. solutions of differential equations) are described by alternating sequences of Morse flows and instantaneous non-Morse gradient flows. To illustrate the generic transitions, we characterize and list all generic non-Morse gradient flows. To construct such characterizations, we characterize isolated singular points of gradient flows on surfaces. In fact, such a singular point is a non-trivial finitely sectored singular point without elliptic sectors. Moreover, considering Morse-Smale flows as "generic gradient flows with limit cycles", we characterize and list all generic non-Morse-Smale flows.

Abstract:We give a purely contact and symplectic geometric characterization of Anosov flows in dimension 3 and discuss a framework to use tools from contact and symplectic geometry and topology in the study of Anosov dynamics. We also discuss some uniqueness results regarding the underlying (bi)-contact structures for an Anosov flow and give a characterization of Anosovity based on Reeb flows.

Abstract:Every pseudo-Anosov flow $\phi$ in a closed $3$-manifold $M$ gives rise to an action of $\pi_1(M)$ on a circle $S^{1}_{\infty}(\phi)$ from infinity \cite{Fen12}, with a pair of invariant \emph{almost} laminations. From certain actions on $S^{1}$ with invariant almost laminations, we reconstruct flows and manifolds realizing these actions, including all orientable transitive pseudo-Anosov flows in closed $3$-manifolds. Our construction provides a geometry model for such flows and manifolds induced from $\mathcal{D} \times \mathcal{D}$, where $\mathcal{D}$ is the Poincaré disk with $\partial \mathcal{D}$ identified with $S^{1}_{\infty}(\phi)$. In addition, our result applies to Cannon conjecture under the assumption that certain group-equivariant sphere-filling Peano curve exists, which offers a description of orientable quasigeodesic pseudo-Anosov flows in hyperbolic $3$-manifolds in terms of group actions on $\partial \mathbb{H}^{3} \times \partial \mathbb{H}^{3} \times \partial \mathbb{H}^{3}$.

Abstract:On a geodesic sphere in a complex projective space, we have Sasakian magnetic fields induced by the almost contact metric structure. In this paper, we investigate their magnetic flows on the unit sphere subbundle of the bundle of the contact distribution over this geodesic sphere, and show that they are smoothly conjugate to each other.

Abstract:The first half of this paper is concerned with the topology of the space $\AAA(M)$ of (not necessarily contact) Anosov vector fields on the unit tangent bundle $M$ of closed oriented hyperbolic surfaces $\Sigma$. We show that there are countably infinite connected components of $\AAA(M)$, each of which is not simply connected. In the second part, we study contact Anosov flows. We show in particular that the time changes of contact Anosov flows form a $C^1$-open subset of the space of the Anosov flows which leave a particular $C^\infty$ volume form invariant, if the ambiant manifold is a rational homology sphere.

Transverse surfaces and pseudo-Anosov flows

Abstract:Let $\varphi$ be a transitive pseudo-Anosov flow on an oriented, compact $3$-manifold $M$, possibly with toral boundary. We characterize the surfaces in $M$ that are (almost) transverse to $\phi$. When $\varphi$ has no perfect fits (e.g. $\varphi$ is the suspension flow of a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism), we prove that any Thurston-norm minimizing surface $S$ that pairs nonnegatively with the closed orbits of $\varphi$ is almost transverse to $\varphi$, up to isotopy. This answers a question of Cooper--Long--Reid. Our main tool is a correspondence between surfaces that are almost transverse to $\varphi$ and those that are relatively carried by any associated veering triangulation. The correspondence also allows us to investigate the uniqueness of almost transverse position, to extend Mosher's Transverse Surface Theorem to the case with boundary, and more generally to characterize when relative homology classes represent Birkhoff surfaces.

Abstract:We show that if $M$ is a closed, connected, oriented surface, and two Anosov magnetic systems on $M$ are conjugate by a volume-preserving conjugacy isotopic to the identity, with their magnetic forms in the same cohomology class, then the metrics are isometric. This extends the recent result by Guillarmou, Lefeuvre, and Paternain to the magnetic setting.

Abstract:Any smooth surface in R^3 may be flattened along the z-axis, and the flattened surface becomes close to a billiard table in R^2 . We show that, under some hypotheses, the geodesic flow of this surface converges locally uniformly to the billiard flow. Moreover, if the billiard is dispersive and has finite horizon, then the geodesic flow of the corresponding surface is Anosov. We apply this result to the theory of mechanical linkages and their dynamics: we provide a new example of a simple linkage whose physical behavior is Anosov. For the first time, the edge lengths of the mechanism are given explicitly.

Anosov diffeomorphisms of open surfaces

Abstract:We study the existence of Anosov diffeomorphisms on complete open surfaces. We show that under the assumptions of density of periodic points and uniform geometry that such diffeomorphisms have a system of Margulis measures, which are a holonomy invariant and dynamically invariant system of measures along the stable and unstable leaves. This shows that there can be no such diffeomorphism with a global product structure.

Abstract:We prove that in dimension 3, Anosov flows which are $\mathbb{R}$-covered and skewed are orbit equivalent to Reeb-Anosov flows. We characterize the existence of an invariant contact form or of a Birkhoff section with a given boundary, in terms of linking numbers between two invariant signed measures. Furthermore, we prove the existence of open book decompositions with one boundary component for Reeb-Anosov flows.

Abstract:This paper goes some way in explaining how to construct an integrable hierarchy of flows on the space of conformally immersed tori in n-space. These flows have first occured in mathematical physics -- the Novikov-Veselov and Davey-Stewartson hierarchies -- as kernel dimension preserving deformations of the Dirac operator. Later, using spinorial representations of surfaces, the same flows were interpreted as deformations of surfaces in 3- and 4-space preserving the Willmore energy. This last property suggest that the correct geometric setting for this theory is Moebius invariant surface geometry. We develop this view point in the first part of the paper where we derive the fundamental invariants -- the Schwarzian derivative, the Hopf differential and a normal connection -- of a conformal immersion into n-space together with their integrability equations. To demonstrate the effectivness of our approach we discuss and prove a variety of old and new results from conformal surface theory. In the the second part of the paper we derive the Novikov-Veselov and Davey-Stewartson flows on conformally immersed tori by Moebius invariant geometric deformations. We point out the analogy to a similar derivation of the KdV hierarchy as flows on Schwarzian's of meromorphic functions. Special surface classes, e.g. Willmore surfaces and isothermic surfaces, are preserved by the flows.

We investigate basic properties of the space of the resulting geometries. A technical theorem on the expansion uniformization of adapted norms is proved, which can be of broader interest.

Veering triangulations and transverse foliations

Abstract:We present a combinatorial approach to the existence of foliations and contact structures transverse to a given pseudo-Anosov flow. Let $\varphi$ be a transitive pseudo-Anosov flow on a closed oriented 3-manifold. Our main technical result is that every codimension 1 foliation transverse to $\varphi$ is carried by a single branched surface coming from a veering triangulation. Combined with recent breakthrough work of Massoni, this reduces the existence problem for transverse foliations to something like the feasibility of a system of inequalities (rather than equations!) over $Homeo_+([0,1])$. As a proof of concept, we show that for the hyperbolic, fibered, non-L-space knot $10_{145}$, the natural pseudo-Anosov flow on the slope $s$ Dehn surgery admits a transverse foliation for $s\in (-\infty, 3)$, but does not admit such a foliation for $s\in [5,\infty)$. The negative result is part of a more general Milnor--Wood type phenomenon which puts limitations on some well known methods for constructing taut foliations on Dehn surgeries.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to prove that, for every $n\in \mathbb N$, there exists a closed hyperbolic $3$-manifold $M$ which carries at least $n$ non-$\mathbb R$-covered Anosov flows, that are pairwise non-orbitally equivalent. Due to a recent result by Fenley, such Anosov flows are quasi-geodesic. Hence, we get the existence of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds carrying many pairwise non-orbitally equivalent quasi-geodesic Anosov flows. Based on the orbit space theory of Anosov flows developed by Fenley and Barbot, we completely studied the connected components of edge-adjacent lozenges, say, clusters in the orbit spaces of the Anosov flows in construction. The number of the lozenges of a cluster and a type of orientations on the clusters together are used as dynamical invariants to prove that the flows we construct are not orbitally equivalent. We believe that those dynamical invariants could be used in a much wider context.

Abstract:We show that a transitive Anosov flow with orientable stable and unstable foliations that either (i) admits a Birkhoff section whose first return map is a Penner type pseudo-Anosov map, or (ii) is totally periodic admits a genus one Birkhoff section. This provides evidence for a conjecture of Fried and Ghys. The proof utilizes a result of the author on the horizontal Goodman surgery operation. To apply this result for showing (i), we establish correspondence between horizontal Goodman surgery on pseudo-Anosov flows and horizontal surgery on veering triangulations in the layered setting.

Abstract:Let $X_1^t$ and $X_2^t$ be volume preserving Anosov flows on a 3-dimensional manifold $M$. We prove that if $X_1^t$ and $X_2^t$ are $C^0$ conjugate then the conjugacy is, in fact, smooth, unless $M$ is a mapping torus of an Anosov automorphism of $\mathbb T^2$ and both flows are constant roof suspension flows. We deduce several applications. Among them is a new result on rigidity of Anosov diffeorphisms on $\mathbb T^2$ and a new "weighted" marked length spectrum rigidity result for surfaces of negative curvature.

Abstract:The Anomaly flow is a flow which implements the Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation mechanism originating from superstring theory, while preserving the conformally balanced condition of Hermitian metrics. There are several versions of the flow, depending on whether the gauge field also varies, or is assumed known. A distinctive feature of Anomaly flows is that, in m dimensions, the flow of the Hermitian metric has to be inferred from the flow of its (m-1)-th power ω^m-1. We show how this can be done explicitly, and we work out the corresponding flows for the torsion and the curvature tensors. The results are applied to produce criteria for the long-time existence of the flow, in the simplest case of zero slope parameter.
