Abstract:In this paper we study the geometry of first time singularities of the mean curvature flow. By the curvature pinching estimate of Huisken and Sinestrari, we prove that a mean curvature flow of hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Rn+1 with positive mean curvature is K-noncollapsing, and a blow-up sequence converges locally smoothly along a subsequence to a smooth, convex blow-up solution. As a consequence we obtain a local Harnack inequality for the mean convex flow.

Abstract:In this paper we study a contracting flow of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space ℝ^n+1 with speed f r^α K, where K is the Gauss curvature, r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin, and f is a positive and smooth function. If α≥ n+1, we prove that the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly after normalisation to a soliton, which is a sphere centred at the origin if f ≡ 1. Our argument provides a parabolic proof in the smooth category for the classical Aleksandrov problem, and resolves the dual q-Minkowski problem introduced by Huang, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang (Acta Math. 216 (2016): 325-388), for the case q<0. If α < n+1, corresponding to the case q>0, we also establish the same results for even function f and origin-symmetric initial condition, but for non-symmetric f, counterexample is given for the above smooth convergence.

Abstract:In this paper we study the regularity and singularity of the mean curvature flow of closed, smooth, embedded hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space with positive mean curvature, with an attempt to understand the geometry of first time singularities. First we consider the mean curvature flow of graphs and convex hypersurfaces. Then we consider the special blow-up solutions at the maximal mean curvature points and obtain self-similar solutions at type I singularities and translating solutions at type II singularities. Abstract:Let M n be a smooth, compact manifold without boundary, and F 0: M n → R n+1 a smooth immersion which is convex. The one-parameter families F(·, t): M n × [0, T) → R n+1 of hypersurfaces M t n = F(·, t)(M n ) satisfy an initial value problem dt/dF(·, t) = −H k (·, t)ν(·, t), F(·, 0) = F 0(·), where H is the mean curvature and ν(·, t) is the outer unit normal at F(·, t), such that −H ν = $\overrightarrow H $ is the mean curvature vector, and k > 0 is a constant. This problem is called H k -flow. Such flow will develop singularities after finite time. According to the blow-up rate of the square norm of the second fundamental forms, the authors analyze the structure of the rescaled limit by classifying the singularities as two types, i.e., Type I and Type II. It is proved that for Type I singularity, the limiting hypersurface satisfies an elliptic equation; for Type II singularity, the limiting hypersurface must be a translating soliton.

Abstract:We consider curve shortening flow of arbitrary codimension in an Euclidean background. We show that, close to a singularity, the flow is asymptotically planar, paralleling Altschuler's work in the case of space curves, and analyse the blow-up limits of the flow. Using these results, we then prove that the curve shortening flow of initial curves with an entropy bound converges to a round point in finite time.

Abstract:It has long been conjectured that starting at a generic smooth closed embedded surface in R^3, the mean curvature flow remains smooth until it arrives at a singularity in a neighborhood of which the flow looks like concentric spheres or cylinders. That is, the only singularities of a generic flow are spherical or cylindrical. We will address this conjecture here and in a sequel. The higher dimensional case will be addressed elsewhere. The key in showing this conjecture is to show that shrinking spheres, cylinders and planes are the only stable self-shrinkers under the mean curvature flow. We prove this here in all dimensions. An easy consequence of this is that every other singularity than spheres and cylinders can be perturbed away.

Abstract:Isolated singularities on free surfaces of two‐dimensional and axially symmetric three‐dimensional steady potential flows with gravity are considered. A systematic study is presented, where known solutions are recovered and new ones found. In two dimensions, the singularities found include those described by the Stokes solution with a 120° angle, Craya's flow with a cusp on the free surface, Gurevich's flow with a free surface meeting a rigid plane at 120° angle, and Dagan and Tulin's flow with a horizontal free surface meeting a rigid wall at an angle less than 120°. In three dimensions, the singularities found include those in Garabedian's axially symmetric flow about a conical surface with an approximately 130° angle, flows with axially symmetric cusps, and flows with a horizontal free surface and conical stream surfaces. The Stokes, Gurevich, and Garabedian flows are exact solutions. These are used to generate local solutions, including perturbations of the Stokes solution by Grant and Longuet‐Higgins and Fox, perturbations of Gurevich's flow by Vanden‐Broeck and Tuck, asymmetric perturbations of Stokes flow and nonaxisymmetric perturbations of Garabedian's flow. A generalization of the Stokes solution to three fluids meeting at a point is also found.

Non-persistence of strongly isolated singularities, and geometric applications

Abstract:We obtain a generic regularity result for stationary integral $n$-varifolds assumed to have only strongly isolated singularities inside $N$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, without any restriction on the dimension ($n\geq 2$) and codimension. As a special case, we prove that for any $n\geq 2$ and any compact $(n+1)$-dimensional manifold $M$ the following holds: for a generic choice of the background metric $g$ all stationary integral $n$-varifolds in $(M,g)$ will either be entirely smooth or have at least one singular point that is not strongly isolated. In other words, for a generic metric only "more complicated" singularities may possibly persist. This implies, for instance, a generic finiteness result for the class of all closed minimal hypersurfaces of area at most $4\pi^2-\varepsilon$ (for any $\varepsilon>0$) in nearly round four-spheres: we can thus give precise answers, in the negative, to the questions of persistence of the Clifford football and of Hsiang's hyperspheres in nearly-round metrics. The aforementioned main regularity result is achieved as a consequence of the fine analysis of the Fredholm index of the Jacobi operator for such varifolds: we prove on the one hand an exact formula relating that number to the Morse indices of the conical links at the singular points, while on the other hand we show that such an index is non-negative for all such varifolds if the ambient metric is generic.

Abstract:Morales, Pacifico and Pujals proved recently that every robustly transitive singular set for a 3-dimensional flow must be partially hyperbolic. In this paper we generalize the result to higher dimensions. By definition, an isolated invariant set A of a C-1 vector field S is called robustly transitive if there exist an isolating neighborhood U of A in M and a C-1 neighborhood U of S in chi(1) (M) such that for every X is an element of U, the maximal invariant set of X in U is non-trivially transitive. Such a set A is called singular if it contains a singularity. The set A is called strongly homogeneous of index i, if there exist an isolating neighborhood U of A in M and a C-1 neighborhood U of S in chi(1) (M) such that all periodic orbits of all X is an element of U contained in U have the same index i. We prove in this paper that any robustly transitive singular set that is strongly homogeneous must be partially hyperbolic, as long as the indices of singularities and periodic orbits fit in certain way. As corollaries we obtain that every robust singular attractor (or repeller) that is strongly homogeneous must be partially hyperbolic and, if dim M <= 4, every robustly transitive singular set that is strongly homogeneous must be partially hyperbolic. The main novelty of the proofs in this paper is an extension of the usual linear Poincare flow "to singularities".

Abstract:We show that the set of harmonic maps from the 2-dimensional stratified spheres with uniformly bounded energies contains only finitely many homotopy classes. We apply this result to construct infinitely many harmonic map flows and mean curvature flows of 2-sphere in the connected sum of two closed 3-dimensional manifolds M1≠S3 and M2≠S3,RP3, which must develop finite time singularity.

Abstract:We prove that every $C^1$ generic three-dimensional flow has either infinitely many sinks, or, infinitely many hyperbolic or singular-hyperbolic attractors whose basins form a full Lebesgue measure set. We also prove in the orientable case that the set of accumulation points of the sinks of a $C^1$ generic three-dimensional flow has no dominated splitting with respect to the linear Poincaré flow. As a corollary we obtain that every three-dimensional flow can be $C^1$ approximated by flows with homoclinic tangencies or by singular-Axiom A flows.

Abstract:We show that for certain one-parameter families of initial conditions in $\mathbb R^3$, when we run mean curvature flow, a genus one singularity must appear in one of the flows. Moreover, such a singularity is robust under perturbation of the family of initial conditions. This contrasts sharply with the case of just a single flow. As an application, we construct an embedded, genus one self-shrinker with entropy lower than a shrinking doughnut.

Abstract:Recently, J. Streets and G. Tian introduced a natural way to evolve an almost-Kähler manifold called the symplectic curvature flow, in which the metric, the symplectic structure and the almost-complex structure are all evolving. We study in this paper different aspects of the flow on locally homogeneous manifolds, including long-time existence, solitons, regularity and convergence. We develop in detail two classes of Lie groups, which are relatively simple from a structural point of view but yet geometrically rich and exotic: solvable Lie groups with a codimension one abelian normal subgroup and a construction attached to each left symmetric algebra. As an application, we exhibit a soliton structure on most of symplectic surfaces which are Lie groups. A family of ancient solutions which develop a finite time singularity was found; neither their Chern scalar nor their scalar curvature are monotone along the flow and they converge in the pointed sense to a (non-Kähler) shrinking soliton solution on the same Lie group.

Abstract:We study singularities along the Lagrangian mean curvature flow with tangent flows given by multiplicity one special Lagrangian cones that are smooth away from the origin. Some results are: uniqueness of all such tangent flows in dimension two; uniqueness in any dimension when the link of the cone is connected; the existence of nontrivial special Lagrangian blowup limits. We also prove a singular version of Imagi-Joyce-dos Santos's uniqueness result of the Lawlor neck. As an application we prove that in any dimension, singularities that admit a tangent flow given by the union of two transverse planes is modeled on shrinking Lawlor necks at suitable scales.

Abstract:For a compact spin Riemannian manifold $(M,g^{TM})$ of dimension $n$ such that the associated scalar curvature $k^{TM}$ verifies that $k^{TM}\geqslant n(n-1)$, Llarull's rigidity theorem says that any area-decreasing smooth map $f$ from $M$ to the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n}$ of nonzero degree is an isometry. We present in this paper a new proof for Llarull's rigidity theorem in odd dimensions via a spectral flow argument. This approach also works for a generalization of Llarrull's theorem when the sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n}$ is replaced by an arbitrary smooth strictly convex closed hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. The results answer two questions by Gromov.

Cohomogeneity one solitons for the isometric flow of $G_2$-structures

Abstract:We consider the existence of cohomogeneity one solitons for the isometric flow of $G_2$-structures on the following classes of torsion-free $G_2$-manifolds: the Euclidean $R^7$ with its standard $G_2$-structure, metric cylinders over Calabi-Yau 3-folds, metric cones over nearly Kähler 6-manifolds, and the Bryant-Salamon $G_2$-manifolds. In all cases we establish existence of global solutions to the isometric soliton equations, and determine the asymptotic behaviour of the torsion. In particular, existence of shrinking isometric solitons on $R^7$ is proved, giving support to the likely existence of type I singularities for the isometric flow. In each case, the study of the soliton equation reduces to a particular nonlinear ODE with a regular singular point, for which we provide a careful analysis. Finally, to simplify the derivation of the relevant equations in each case, we first establish several useful Riemannian geometric formulas for a general class of cohomogeneity one metrics on total spaces of vector bundles which should have much wider application, as such metrics arise often as explicit examples of special holonomy metrics.

Abstract:We study the elastic flow of closed curves and of open curves with clamped boundary conditions in the hyperbolic plane. While global existence and convergence toward critical points for initial data with sufficiently small energy is already known, this study pioneers an investigation into the flow's singular behavior. We prove a convergence theorem without assuming smallness of the initial energy, coupled with a quantification of potential singularities: Each singularity carries an energy cost of at least 8. Moreover, the blow-ups of the singularities are explicitly classified. A further contribution is an explicit understanding of the singular limit of the elastic flow of $\lambda$-figure-eights, a class of curves that previously served in showing sharpness of the energy threshold 16 for the smooth convergence of the elastic flow of closed curves.
