Abstract:Cellular resolutions are a technique for constructing resolutions of monomial ideals by giving a cell complex labeled by monomials, or more generally, by monomial modules. This \verb|Macaulay2| package allows us to work with cellular resolutions in a natural way.

Abstract:We construct cellular resolutions for monomial ideals via discrete Morse theory. In particular, we develop an algorithm to create homogeneous acyclic matchings and we call the cellular resolutions induced from these matchings Barile–Macchia resolutions. These resolutions are minimal for edge ideals of weighted oriented forests and (most) cycles. As a result, we provide recursive formulas for graded Betti numbers and projective dimension. Furthermore, we compare Barile–Macchia resolutions to those created by Batzies and Welker and some well-known simplicial resolutions. Under certain assumptions, whenever the above resolutions are minimal, so are Barile–Macchia resolutions.

Minimal cellular resolutions of powers of matching field ideals

Abstract:We study a family of monomial ideals, called block diagonal matching field ideals, which arise as monomial Gröbner degenerations of determinantal ideals. Our focus is on the minimal free resolutions of these ideals and all of their powers. Initially, we establish their linear quotient property and compute their Betti numbers, illustrating that their minimal free resolution is supported on a regular CW complex. Our proof relies on the results of Herzog and Takayama, demonstrating that ideals with a linear quotient property have a minimal free resolution, and on the construction by Dochtermann and Mohammadi of cellular realizations of these resolutions. We begin by proving the linear quotient property for each power of such an ideal. Subsequently, we show that their corresponding decomposition map is regular, resulting in a minimal cellular resolution. Finally, we demonstrate that distinct decomposition maps lead to different cellular complexes with the same face numbers.

Abstract:We study families of cellular resolutions by looking at them as a category and applying tools from representation stability. We obtain sufficient conditions on the structure of the family to have a noetherian representation category and apply this to concrete examples of families. In the study of syzygies we make use of defining the syzygy module as a representation and find conditions for the finite generation of this representation. We then show that many families of cellular resolutions coming from powers of ideals satisfy these conditions and have finitely generated syzygies, including the maximal ideals and edge ideals of paths.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the class of ordered homomorphism ideals and prove that these ideals admit minimal cellular resolutions constructed as homomorphism complexes. As a key ingredient of our work, we introduce the class of cointerval simplicial complexes and investigate their combinatorial and topological properties. As a concrete illustration of these structural results, we introduce and study nonnesting monomial ideals, an interesting family of combinatorially defined ideals.

Abstract:We prove that the Pommaret-Seiler resolution for quasi-stable ideals is cellular and give a cellular structure for it. This shows that this resolution is a generalization of the well known Eliahou-Kervaire resolution for stable ideals in a deeper sense. We also prove that the Pommaret-Seiler resolution can be reduced to the minimal one via Discrete Morse Theory and provide a constructive algorithm to perform this reduction.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{P}$ be a collection of cells and $I_\mathcal{P}$ be the associated ideal of inner $2$-minors as defined by A. A. Qureshi in 2012. In this paper, we provide a description of the package $\texttt{PolyominoIdeals}$ for the computer algebra software $\texttt{Macaulay2}$. More precisely, this package provides some functions that allow to define the ideal $I_{\mathcal{P}}$ in $\texttt{Macaulay2}$ and to compute its algebraic invariants or verifying its algebraic properties. We explain the usage of these functions and also give some examples. Refer to the tool provided in $\textit{https://rizwan.phd/polyo/}$ to get easier the desired input data for $\texttt{Macaulay2}$.

Abstract:We set up machinery for recognizing k-cellular modules and k-cellular approximations, where k is an R-module and R is either a ring or a ring-spectrum. Using this machinery we can identify the target of the Eilenberg-Moore cohomology spectral sequence for a fibration in various cases. In this manner we get new proofs for known results concerning the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence and generalize another result.

Abstract:We explore a family of monomial ideals derived as Gröbner degenerations of determinantal ideals. These ideals, previously examined as block diagonal matching field ideals within the realm of toric degenerations of Grassmannians, are identified as monomial initial ideals of determinantal ideals. We establish their linear quotient property and calculate their Betti numbers, demonstrating that their minimal free resolution is supported on a regular CW complex, equivalently, they have a cellular resolution. On the combinatorial front, we examine a range of weight vectors that yield diverse monomial initial ideals for determinantal ideals. We show that despite variations in weight vectors, all these ideals share identical Betti numbers. However, altering a weight vector results in distinct cellular complexes supporting their minimal free resolutions.

Abstract:A complex variety $X$ admits a \emph{cellular resolution of singularities} if there exists a resolution of singularities $\widetilde X\to X$ such that its exceptional locus as well as $\widetilde X$ and the singular locus of $X$ admit a cellular decomposition. We give a concrete description of the motive with compact support of $X$ in terms of its Borel--Moore homology, under some mild conditions. We give many examples, including rational projective curves and toric varieties of dimension two and three.

Matching Fields in Macaulay2

Abstract:This article introduces the package MatchingFields for Macaulay2 and highlights some open problems. A matching field is a combinatorial object whose data encodes a candidate toric degeneration of a Grassmannian or partial flag variety of type A. Each coherent matching field is associated to a certain maximal cone of the respective tropical variety. The MatchingFields package provides methods to construct matching fields along with their rings, ideals, polyhedra and matroids. The package also supplies methods to test whether a matching field is coherent, linkage and gives rise to a toric degeneration.

Abstract:We give an overview of a Macaulay2 package for computing with the multigraded BGG correspondence. This software builds on the package BGG due to Abo-Decker-Eisenbud-Schreyer-Smith-Stillman, which concerns the standard graded BGG correspondence. In addition to implementing the multigraded BGG functors, this package includes an implementation of differential modules and their minimal free resolutions, and it contains a method for computing strongly linear strands of multigraded free resolutions.

Abstract:The package \texttt{NumericalCertification} implements methods for certifying numerical approximations of solutions for a given system of polynomial equations. For certifying regular solutions, the package implements Smale's $\alpha$-theory and Krawczyk method. For a singular solution, we implement soft verification using the iterative deflation method. We demonstrate the functionalities of the package focusing on interaction with current numerical solvers in \texttt{Macaulay2}.
