Abstract:In this paper we prove certain properties of cellular and acyclic classes of chain complexes of modules over a commutative Noetherian ring. In particular we show that if X is finite and belongs to some cellular class C then \Sigma^n H_X also belongs to C, for every n.

Abstract:We construct examples of bounded below, noncontractible, acyclic complexes of finitely generated projective modules over some rings S , as well as bounded above, noncontractible, acyclic complexes of injective modules. The rings S are certain rings of infinite matrices with entries in the rings of commutative polynomials or formal power series in infinitely many variables. In the world of comodules or contramodules over coalgebras over fields, similar examples exist over the cocommutative symmetric coalgebra of an infinite-dimensional vector space. A simpler, universal example of a bounded below, noncontractible, acyclic complex of free modules with one generator, communicated to the author by Canonaco, is included at the end of the paper.

Combinatorial free chain complexes over quotient polynomial rings

Abstract:We present a procedure that constructs, in a combinatorial manner, a chain complex of free modules over a polynomial ring in finitely many variables, modulo an ideal generated by quadratic monomials. Applying this procedure to two specific rings and one family of rings, we demonstrate that the resulting chain complex is indeed an exact chain complex and thus a free resolution. Utilizing this free resolution, we show that, for these rings, the injective dimension is infinite, as modules over itself. Finally, we propose the conjecture that this procedure always yields a free resolution.

Abstract:A commutative noetherian ring with a dualizing complex is Gorenstein if and only if every acyclic complex of injective modules is totally acyclic. We extend this characterization, which is due to Iyengar and Krause, to arbitrary commutative noetherian rings, i.e. we remove the assumption about a dualizing complex. In this context Gorenstein, of course, means locally Gorenstein at every prime.

The model structure is cofibrantly generated and is projective in the sense that the trivially cofibrant objects are the categorically projective chain complexes. We show that when R is a Ding-Chen ring, that is, a two-sided coherent ring with finite self FP-injective dimension, then the model structure is finitely generated, and so its homotopy category is compactly generated. Constructing this model structure also shows that every chain complex over any ring has a Gorenstein AC-projective precover. These are precisely Gorenstein projective (in the usual sense) precovers whenever R is either a Ding-Chen ring, or, a ring for which all level (left) R-modules have finite projective dimension. For a general (right) coherent ring R, the Gorenstein AC-projective complexes coincide with the Ding projective complexes of [31] and so provide such precovers in this case.

Acyclic complexes of injectives and finitistic dimensions

Abstract:For a ring $A$, we consider the question whether every bounded above cochain complex of injective $A$-modules which is acyclic is null-homotopic. We show that if $A$ is left and right noetherian and has a dualizing complex, then this implies that the finitistic dimension of $A$ is finite. In the appendix, Nakamura and Thompson show that the opposite holds over any ring. Our results give several new necessary and sufficient conditions for a ring to have finite finitistic dimension in a very general setting. Applications include a generalization of a recent result of Rickard about relations between unbounded derived categories and finitistic dimension, as well as several new characterizations of noetherian rings which satisfy the Gorenstein symmetry conjecture.

Abstract:We set up machinery for recognizing k-cellular modules and k-cellular approximations, where k is an R-module and R is either a ring or a ring-spectrum. Using this machinery we can identify the target of the Eilenberg-Moore cohomology spectral sequence for a fibration in various cases. In this manner we get new proofs for known results concerning the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence and generalize another result.

Abstract:We study families of cellular resolutions by looking at them as a category and applying tools from representation stability. We obtain sufficient conditions on the structure of the family to have a noetherian representation category and apply this to concrete examples of families. In the study of syzygies we make use of defining the syzygy module as a representation and find conditions for the finite generation of this representation. We then show that many families of cellular resolutions coming from powers of ideals satisfy these conditions and have finitely generated syzygies, including the maximal ideals and edge ideals of paths.

Formal lifting of dualizing complexes and consequences

Abstract:We show that for a Noetherian ring $A$ that is $I$-adically complete for an ideal $I$, if $A/I$ admits a dualizing complex, so does $A$. This gives an alternative proof of the fact that a Noetherian complete local ring admits a dualizing complex. We discuss several consequences of this result. We also consider a generalization of the notion of dualizing complexes to infinite-dimensional rings and prove the results in this generality. In addition, we give an alternative proof of the fact that every excellent Henselian local ring admits a dualizing complex, using ultrapower.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the class of ordered homomorphism ideals and prove that these ideals admit minimal cellular resolutions constructed as homomorphism complexes. As a key ingredient of our work, we introduce the class of cointerval simplicial complexes and investigate their combinatorial and topological properties. As a concrete illustration of these structural results, we introduce and study nonnesting monomial ideals, an interesting family of combinatorially defined ideals.

Abstract:In this paper we propose unifying the categories of cochain complexes $\text{Ch}(\mathcal{C})$ and modules $\widehat{A}\text{-mod}$ over a repetitive algebra $\widehat{A}$. Motivated by their striking similarities and importance, we introduce a novel category encompassing both. Our analysis explores key properties of this unified category, highlighting its parallels and divergences from the original structures. We study whether it preserves crucial aspects like limits, colimits, products, coproducts, and abelianity. Besides, we establish a family of projective and injective indecomposable objects within this framework. Moving beyond theoretical foundations, we examine the influence and interaction over these novel categories of the category of endofunctors and its monoidal structure. Finally, we explore the implications of our constructions over representation theory of algebras and algebraic geometry.

Abstract:Let C be the stable oo-category of perfect complexes on a derived Deligne-Mumford stack X of finite type over the complex numbers. We prove that the complexified noncommutative topological Chern character is an isomorphism for C. In the appendix we show the same property for C the stable oo-category of coherent complexes on a derived algebraic space.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group and $k$ be a field of characteristic $p > 0$. In prior work, we studied endotrivial complexes, the invertible objects of the bounded homotopy category $K^b({}_{kG}\mathbf{triv})$ of $p$-permutation $kG$-modules. Using the notion of projectivity relative to a $kG$-module, we expand on this study by defining notions of "relatively" endotrivial chain complexes, analogous to Lassueur's construction of relatively endotrivial $kG$-modules. We obtain equivalent characterizations of relative endotriviality and find corresponding local homological data which almost completely determine the isomorphism class of a relatively endotrivial complex. We show this local data must partially satisfy the Borel-Smith conditions, and consider the behavior of restriction to subgroups containing Sylow $p$-subgroups $S$ of $G$.

Abstract:One way to understand the mod p homotopy theory of classifying spaces of finite groups is to compute their BZ/p-cellularization. In the easiest cases this is a classifying space of a finite group (always a finite p-group). If not, we show that it has infinitely many non-trivial homotopy groups. Moreover they are either p-torsion free or else infinitely many of them contain p-torsion. By means of techniques related to fusion systems we exhibit concrete examples where p-torsion appears.

Abstract:Support and rank varieties of modules over a group algebra of an elementary abelian p-group have been well studied. In particular, Avrunin and Scott showed that in this setting, the rank and support varieties are equivalent. Avramov and Buchweitz proved an analogous result for pairs of modules over arbitrary commutative local complete intersection rings. In this paper we study support and rank varieties in the triangulated category of totally acyclic chain complexes over a complete intersection ring and show that these varieties are also equivalent.

A noncommutative analogue of the Peskine--Szpiro Acyclicity Lemma

Abstract:We present a variant of the Peskine--Szpiro Acyclicity Lemma, and hence a way to certify exactness of a complex of finite modules over a large class of (possibly) noncommutative rings. Specifically, over the class of Auslander regular rings. In the case of relative $\mathscr{D}_{X}$-modules, for example $\mathscr{D}_{X}[s_{1}, \dots, s_{r}]$-modules, the hypotheses have geometric realizations making them easier to authenticate. We demonstrate the efficacy of this lemma and its various forms by: independently recovering some results related to Bernstein--Sato polynomials; establishing a new result about quasi-free structures of free multi-derivations of hyperplane arrangements.

Abstract:A well-known result of Small states that if M is a noetherian left R-module having endomorphism ring S then any nil subring of S is nilpotent. Fisher [4] dualized this result and showed that if M is left artinian then any nil ideal of S is nilpotent. He gave a bound on the indices of nilpotency of nil subrings of the endomorphism rings of noetherian modules and raised the dual question of whether there are such bounds in the case of artinian modules. He gave an affirmative answer if the module is also assumed to be finitely-generated. Similar affirmative answers for modules with finite homogeneous length were given in [10] and [15]. On the other hand, the nilpotence of certain ideals of the endomorphism rings of modules noetherian relative to a torsion theory has been extensively studied. See [2,6,8,12,15,17]. Relative cell complexes in closure spaces

Abstract:We give necessary and sufficient conditions for certain pushouts of topological spaces in the category of Cech's closure spaces to agree with their pushout in the category of topological spaces. We prove that in these two categories, the constructions of cell complexes by a finite sequences of closed cell attachments, which attach arbitrarily many cells at a time, agree. Likewise, the constructions of finite CW complexes relative to a compactly generated weak Hausdorff space also agree. On the other hand, we give examples showing that the constructions of finite-dimensional CW complexes, CW complexes of finite type, and finite relative CW complexes need not agree.

We provide conceptual and computational tools in this setting, such as filtrations, a homology theory for $E_k$-algebras with a Hurewicz theorem, CW approximations, and many spectral sequences, which shall be used for such applications in future papers.

Abstract:For $p \geq 3$ and an unramified extension $F/\mathbb{Q}_p$ with perfect residue field, we define a syntomic complex with coefficients in a Wach module over a certain period ring for $F$. We show that our complex computes the crystalline part of the Galois cohomology (in the sense of Bloch and Kato) of the associated crystalline representation of the absolute Galois group of $F$. Furthermore, we establish that Wach modules of Berger naturally descend over to a smaller period ring studied by Fontaine and Wach. This enables us to define another syntomic complex with coefficients and we show that its cohomology also computes the crystalline part of the Galois cohomology of the associated representation.

Abstract:For the cyclic group $C_2$ we give a complete description of the derived category of perfect complexes of modules over the constant Mackey ring $\underline{\mathbb{Z}/\ell}$, for $\ell$ a prime. This is fairly simple for $\ell$ odd, but for $\ell=2$ depends on a new splitting theorem. As corollaries of the splitting theorem we compute the associated Picard group and the Balmer spectrum for compact objects in the derived category, and we obtain a complete classification of finite modules over the $C_2$-equivariant Eilenberg--MacLane spectrum $H\underline{\mathbb{Z}/2}$. We also use the splitting theorem to give new and illuminating proofs of some facts about $RO(C_2)$-graded Bredon cohomology, namely Kronholm's freeness theorem and the structure theorem of C. May.
