Abstract:We prove a duality theorem for Cohen--Macaulay simplicial complexes. This is a generalisation of Poincaré Duality, framed in the language of combinatorial sheaves. Our treatment is self-contained and accessible for readers with a working knowledge of simplicial complexes and (co)homology. The main motivation is a link with Bieri-Eckmann duality for discrete groups, which is explored in a companion paper.

Abstract:A simplicial complex $\Delta$ is a virtually Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex if its associated Stanley-Reisner ring $S$ has a virtual resolution, as defined by Berkesch, Erman, and Smith, of length ${\rm codim}(S)$. We provide a sufficient condition on $\Delta$ to be a virtually Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex. We also introduce virtually shellable simplicial complexes, a generalization of shellable simplicial complexes. Virtually shellable complexes have the property that they are virtually Cohen-Macaulay, generalizing the well-known fact that shellable simplicial complexes are Cohen-Macaulay.

Abstract:This paper makes some preliminary observations towards an extension of current work on graphs defined on groups to simplicial complexes. I define a variety of simplicial complexes on a group which are preserved by automorphisms of the group, and in many cases have a relation to familiar graphs on the group. The ones which seem to reach deepest into the graph structure are two forms of independence complex, and some results on the class of groups for which these two complexes coincide are given. Other examples are treated more briefly.

Abstract:We extend the construction of moment-angle complexes to simplicial posets by associating a certain Tm-space ZS to an arbitrary simplicial poset S on m vertices. Face rings ℤ[S] of simplicial posets generalise those of simplicial complexes, and give rise to new classes of Gorenstein and Cohen-Macaulay rings. Our primary motivation is to study the face rings ℤ[S] by topological methods. The space ZS has many important topological properties of the original moment-angle complex ZK associated to a simplicial complex K. In particular, we prove that the integral cohomology algebra of ZS is isomorphic to the Tor-algebra of the face ring ℤ[S]. This leads directly to a generalisation of Hochster’s theorem, expressing the algebraic Betti numbers of the ring ℤ[S] in terms of the homology of full subposets in S. Finally, we estimate the total amount of homology of ZS from below by proving the toral rank conjecture for the moment-angle complexes ZS.

Abstract:This article introduces the package MatchingFields for Macaulay2 and highlights some open problems. A matching field is a combinatorial object whose data encodes a candidate toric degeneration of a Grassmannian or partial flag variety of type A. Each coherent matching field is associated to a certain maximal cone of the respective tropical variety. The MatchingFields package provides methods to construct matching fields along with their rings, ideals, polyhedra and matroids. The package also supplies methods to test whether a matching field is coherent, linkage and gives rise to a toric degeneration.

Abstract:We examine virtual resolutions of Stanley-Reisner ideals for a product of projective spaces. In particular, we provide sufficient conditions for a simplicial complex to be virtually Cohen-Macaulay (to have a virtual resolution with length equal to its codimension). We also show that all balanced simplicial complexes are virtually Cohen-Macaulay.

Multi-Dimensional Cohomological Phenomena in the Multiparametric Models of Random Simplicial Complexes

Abstract:In the past two decades, extensive research has been conducted on the (co)homology of various models of random simplicial complexes. So far, it has always been examined merely as a list of groups. This paper expands upon this by describing both the ring structure and the Steenrod-algebra structure of the cohomology of the multiparametric models. For the lower model, we prove that the ring structure is always a.a.s trivial, while, for certain parameters, the Steenrod-algebra a.a.s acts non-trivially. This reveals that complex multi-dimensional topological structures appear as subcomplexes of this model. In contrast, we improve upon a result of Farber and Nowik, and assert that the cohomology of the upper multiparametric model is a.a.s concentrated in a single dimension.

Pure Simplicial and Clique Complexes with a Fixed Number of Facets

Abstract:We study structural and enumerative aspects of pure simplicial complexes and clique complexes. We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for any simplicial complex to be a clique complex that depends only on the list of facets. We also prove a theorem that a class of ``triangle-intersection free" pure clique complexes are uniquely determined up to isomorphism merely from the facet-adjacency matrix. Lastly, we count the number of pure simplicial complexes with a fixed number of facets and find an upper bound to the number of pure clique complexes.

Abstract:The notion of a simplicial set originated in algebraic topology, and has also been utilized extensively in category theory, but until relatively recently was not used outside of those fields. However, with the increasing prominence of higher categorical methods in a wide range of applications, it is important for researchers in a range of fields to have a good working knowledge of them. This paper is intended as an introduction to simplicial sets, both as an overview of their development from other concepts, and as a user's guide for someone wanting to read modern literature that makes use of them.

Abstract:We consider simplicial sets equipped with a notion of smallness, and observe that this slight "topological" extension of the "algebraic" simplicial language allows a concise reformulation of a number of classical notions in topology, e.g. continuity, limit of a map or a sequence along a filter, various notions of equicontinuity and uniform convergence of a sequence of functions; completeness and compactness; in algebraic topology, locally trivial bundles as a direct product after base-change and geometric realisation as a space of discontinuous paths. In model theory, we observe that indiscernible sequences in a model form a simplicial set with a notion of smallness which can be seen as an analogue of the Stone space of types. These reformulations are presented as a series of exercises, to emphasise their elementary nature and that they indeed can be used as exercises to make a student familiar with computations in basic simplicial and topological language. (Formally, we consider the category of simplicial objects in the category of filters in the sense of Bourbaki.) This work is unfinished and is likely to remain such for a while, hence we release it as is, in the small hope that our reformulations may provide interesting examples of computations in basic simplicial and topological language on material familiar to a student in a first course of topology or category theory.

Abstract:This is a survey article about properties of Cohen-Macaulay modules over surface singularities. We discuss various results on the Macaulayfication functor, reflexive modules over simple, quotient and minimally elliptic singularities, geometric and algebraic McKay Correspondence. Finally, we describe matrix factorizations corresponding to the indecomposable Cohen-Macaulay modules over the non-isolated singularities $A_\infty$ and $D_\infty$.

Abstract:We introduce the MatrixSchubert package for the computer algebra system Macaulay2. This package has tools to construct and study matrix Schubert varieties and alternating sign matrix (ASM) varieties. The package also introduces tools for quickly computing homological invariants of such varieties, finding the components of an ASM variety, and checking if a union of matrix Schubert varieties is an ASM variety.

Abstract:In this paper we develop further the multi-parameter model of random simplicial complexes. Firstly, we give an intrinsic characterisation of the multi-parameter probability measure. Secondly, we show that in multi-parameter random simplicial complexes the links of simplexes and their intersections are also multi-parameter random simplicial complexes. Thirdly, we find conditions under which a multi-parameter random simplicial complex is connected and simply connected.
