Abstract:In any closed smooth Riemannian manifold of dimension at least three, we use the min-max construction to find anisotropic minimal hyper-surfaces with respect to elliptic integrands, with a singular set of codimension~$2$ vanishing Hausdorff measure. In particular, in a closed $3$-manifold, we obtain a smooth anisotropic minimal surface. The critical step is to obtain a uniform upper bound for density ratios in the anisotropic min-max construction. This confirms a conjecture by Allard [Invent. Math., 1983].

Abstract:We show that the Hausdorff dimension of the singular set of perimeter minimizers in non-collapsed Ricci limit spaces with a two-sided Ricci curvature bound is at most $N-5$, where $N$ is the dimension of the ambient space. The estimate is sharp.

Abstract:We give a sharp estimate for the bottom of the spectrum of a Riemannian manifold which is foliated by minimal leaves and transversally negatively curved. Our proof, which uses probabilistic methods, also yields an estimate for the bottom of the sub-Riemannian spectrum.

Regularity of sets of finite fractional perimeter and nonlocal minimal surfaces in metric measure spaces

Abstract:In the setting of a doubling metric measure space $(X,d,\mu)$, we study regularity of sets whose characteristic functions belong to the Besov class $B^s_{1,1}(X)$. Following a result of Visintin in $\mathbb{R}^n$, we provide a sufficient condition for membership in $B^s_{1,1}(X)$ given in terms of the upper Minkowski codimension of the regularized boundary of the set. We also show that if the characteristic function of a set belongs to $B^s_{1,1}(X)$, then its measure theoretic boundary has codimension $s$ Hausdorff measure zero. To the best of our knowledge, this result is new even in the Euclidean setting. By studying certain fat Cantor sets, we provide examples illustrating that the converses of these results do not hold in general. In the doubling metric measure space setting, we then consider minimizers of the nonlocal perimeter functional $\mathcal{J}_\Omega^s$, extending the definition introduced by Caffarelli, Roquejoffre, and Savin in $\mathbb{R}^n$, and prove existence, uniform density, and porosity results for minimizers.

Rigidity of min-max minimal disks in $3$-balls with non-negative Ricci curvature

Abstract:In this paper we prove a rigidity statement for free boundary minimal surfaces produced via min-max methods. More precisely, we prove that for any Riemannian metric $g$ on the 3-ball $B$ with non-negative Ricci curvature and $\mathrm{II}_{\partial B}\ge g_{|\partial B}$, there exists a free boundary minimal disk $\Delta$ of least area among all free boundary minimal disks in $(B,g)$. Moreover, the area of any such $\Delta$ equals to the width of $(B,g)$, $\Delta$ has index one, and the length of $\partial\Delta$ is bounded from above by $2\pi$. Furthermore, the length of $\partial\Delta$ equals to $2\pi$ if and only if $(B,g)$ is isometric to the Euclidean unit ball. This is related to a rigidity result obtained by F.C. Marques and A. Neves in the closed case. The proof uses a rigidity statement concerning half-balls with non-negative Ricci curvature which is true in any dimension.

Stability and largeness properties of minimal surfaces in higher codimension

Abstract:We consider stable minimal surfaces of genus 1 in Euclidean space and in Riemannian manifolds. Under the condition of covering stability (all finite covers are stable) we show that a genus 1 finite total curvature minimal surface in $\mathbb R^n$ lies in an even dimensional affine subspace and is holomorphic for some constant orthogonal complex structure. For stable minimal tori in Riemannian manifolds we give an explicit bound on the systole in terms of a positive lower bound on the isotropic curvature. As an application we estimate the systole of noncyclic abelian subgroups of the fundamental group of PIC manifolds. This gives a new proof of the result of [5] that the fundamental cannot contain a noncyclic free abelian subgroup. The proofs apply the structure theory of holomorphic vector bundles over genus 1 Riemann surfaces developed by M. Atiyah [2].

Existence of minimal hypersurfaces with arbitrarily large area and possible obstructions

Abstract:We prove that in a closed Riemannian manifold with dimension between $3$ and $7$, either there are minimal hypersurfaces with arbitrarily large area, or there exist uncountably many stable minimal hypersurfaces. Moreover, the latter case has a very pathological Cantor set structure which does not show up in certain manifolds. Among the applications, we prove that there exist minimal hypersurfaces with arbitrarily large area in analytic manifolds. In the proof, we use the Almgren-Pitts min-max theory proposed by Marques-Neves, the ideas developed by Song in his proof of Yau's conjecture, and the resolution of the generic multiplicity-one conjecture by Zhou.

Abstract:Near the end of his life, Bernhard Riemann made the marvelous discovery of a 1-parameter family $R_{\lambda}$, $\lambda\in (0,\infty)$, of periodic properly embedded minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with the property that every horizontal plane intersects each of his examples in either a circle or a straight line. Furthermore, as the parameter $\lambda\to 0$ his surfaces converge to a vertical catenoid and as $\lambda\to \infty$ his surfaces converge to a vertical helicoid. Since Riemann's minimal examples are topologically planar domains that are periodic with the fundamental domains for the associated $\mathbb{Z}$-action being diffeomorphic to a compact annulus punctured in a single point, then topologically each of these surfaces is diffeomorphic to the unique genus zero surface with two limit ends. Also he described his surfaces analytically in terms of elliptic functions on rectangular elliptic curves. This article exams Riemann's original proof of the classification of minimal surfaces foliated by circles and lines in parallel planes and presents a complete outline of the recent proof that every properly embedded minimal planar domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$ is either a Riemann minimal example, a catenoid, a helicoid or a plane.

Abstract:E. Calabi and J. Cao showed that a closed geodesic of least length in a two-sphere with nonnegative curvature is always simple. Using min-max theory, we prove that for some higher dimensions, this result holds without assumptions on the curvature. More precisely, in a closed $(n+1)$-manifold with $2 \leq n \leq 6$, a least area closed minimal hypersurface exists and any such hypersurface is embedded. As an application, we give a short proof of the fact that if a closed three-manifold $M$ has scalar curvature at least $6$ and is not isometric to the round three-sphere, then $M$ contains an embedded closed minimal surface of area less than $4\pi$. This confirms a conjecture of F. C. Marques and A. Neves.

Abstract:Quasiminimal sets are sets for which a pertubation can decrease the area but only in a controlled manner. We prove that in dimensions $2$ and $3$, such sets separate a locally finite family of local John domains. Reciprocally, we show that this property is a sufficient for quasiminimality. In addition, we show that quasiminimal sets locally separate the space in two components, except at isolated points in $\R^2$ or out a of subset of dimension strictly less than $N-1$ in $\R^N$.

Abstract:The purpose of this article is study rigidity of free boundary minimal two-disks that locally maximize the modified Hawking mass on a Riemannian three-manifold with positive lower bound on its scalar curvature and mean convex boundary. Assuming the strict stability of {\Sigma}, we prove that a neighborhood of it in M is isometric to one of the half de Sitter-Schwarzschild space.

Abstract:We study area-minimizing hypersurfaces in singular ambient manifolds whose tangent cones have nonnegative scalar curvature on their regular parts. We prove that the singular set of the hypersurface has codimension at least 3 in our settings. We also give an example in which n-dimensional minimizing hypersurface in an ambient space as given above may have singularities of dimension $n-3$. This shows that our regularity result is sharp.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to prove two results concerning the rigidity of complete, immersed, orientable, stable minimal hypersurfaces: we show that they are hyperplane in R 4 , while they do not exist in positively curved closed Riemannian ( n +1)-manifold when n ≤5; in particular, there are no stable minimal hypersurfaces in S n +1 when n ≤5. The first result was recently proved also by Chodosh and Li, and the second is a consequence of a more general result concerning minimal surfaces with finite index. Both theorems rely on a conformal method, inspired by a classical work of Fischer-Colbrie.

Abstract:We show that the combination of non-negative sectional curvature (or $2$-intermediate Ricci curvature) and strict positivity of scalar curvature forces rigidity of complete (non-compact) two-sided stable minimal hypersurfaces in a $4$-manifold with bounded curvature. In particular, this implies the nonexistence of complete two-sided stable minimal hypersurface in a closed $4$-manifold with positive sectional curvature. Our work leads to new comparison results. We also construct various examples showing rigidity of stable minimal hypersurfaces can fail under other curvature conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider minimal graphs in the three-dimensional Riemannian manifold M × R . We mainly estimate the Gaussian curvature of such surfaces. We consider the minimal disks and minimal graphs bounded by two Jordan curves in parallel planes. The key to the proofs is the Weierstrass representation of those surfaces via ℘-harmonic mappings. We also prove some Schwarz lemma type results and some Heinz type results for harmonic mappings between geodesic disks in Riemannian surfaces.

Abstract:We prove a scalar-mean rigidity theorem for compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary in dimension less than five by extending Schoen-Yau dimension reduction argument. As a corollary, we prove the sharp spherical radius rigidity theorem and best NNSC fill-in in terms of the mean curvature. Additionally, we prove a (Lipschitz) Listing type scalar-mean comparison rigidity theorem for these dimensions. Our results remove the spin assumption.

By comparison with capped spherical cones, we identify a precise borderline for the Ricci curvature decay. Above this value, no complete area-minimizing hypersurfaces exist.
