Abstract:We give a sharp estimate for the bottom of the spectrum of a Riemannian manifold which is foliated by minimal leaves and transversally negatively curved. Our proof, which uses probabilistic methods, also yields an estimate for the bottom of the sub-Riemannian spectrum.

Abstract:We prove that every closed, smooth $n$-manifold $X$ admits a Riemannian metric together with a smooth, transversely oriented CMC foliation if and only if its Euler characteristic is zero, where by CMC foliation we mean a codimension-one, transversely oriented foliation with leaves of constant mean curvature and where the value of the constant mean curvature can vary from leaf to leaf. Furthermore, we prove that this CMC foliation of $X$ can be chosen so that the constant values of the mean curvatures of its leaves change sign. We also prove a general structure theorem for any such non-minimal CMC foliation of $X$ that describes relationships between the geometry and topology of the leaves, including the property that there exist compact leaves for every attained value of the mean curvature.

Abstract:A classical result of Cheng states that the bottom spectrum of complete manifolds of fixed dimension and Ricci curvature lower bound achieves its maximal value on the corresponding hyperbolic space. The paper establishes an analogous result for three-dimensional complete manifolds with scalar curvature lower bound subject to some necessary topological assumptions. The rigidity issue is also addressed and a splitting theorem is obtained for such manifolds with the maximal bottom spectrum.

Abstract:Let $\Sigma$ be a complete Riemannian manifold of nonnegative Ricci curvature. We prove a Liouville-type theorem: every smooth solution $u$ to minimal hypersurface equation on $\Sigma$ is a constant provided $u$ has sublinear growth for its negative part. Here, the sublinear growth condition is sharp. Our proof relies on a gradient estimate for minimal graphs over $\Sigma$ with small linear growth of the negative parts of graphic functions via iteration.

Abstract:We establish general bounds on the topology of free boundary minimal surfaces obtained via min-max methods in compact, three-dimensional ambient manifolds with mean convex boundary. We prove that the first Betti number is lower semicontinuous along min-max sequences converging in the sense of varifolds to free boundary minimal surfaces. In the orientable case, we obtain an even stronger result which implies that if the number of boundary components increases in the varifold limit, then the genus decreases at least as much. We also present several compelling applications, such as the variational construction of a free boundary minimal trinoid in the Euclidean unit ball.

Spectral estimates for free boundary minimal surfaces via Montiel-Ros partitioning methods

Abstract:We adapt and extend the Montiel-Ros methodology to compact manifolds with boundary, allowing for mixed (including oblique) boundary conditions and also accounting for the action of a finite group $G$ together with an additional twisting homomorphism $\sigma\colon G\to\operatorname O(1)$. We then apply this machinery in order to obtain quantitative lower and upper bounds on the growth rate of the Morse index of free boundary minimal surfaces with respect to the topological data (i. e. the genus and the number of boundary components) of the surfaces in question. In particular, we compute the exact values of the equivariant Morse index and nullity for two infinite families of examples, with respect to their maximal symmetry groups, and thereby derive explicit two-sided linear bounds when the equivariance constraint is lifted.

Abstract:This article studies codimension one foliations on projective man-ifolds having a compact leaf (free of singularities). It explores the interplay between Ueda theory (order of flatness of the normal bundle) and the holo-nomy representation (dynamics of the foliation in the transverse direction). We address in particular the following problems: existence of foliation having as a leaf a given hypersurface with topologically torsion normal bundle, global structure of foliations having a compact leaf whose holonomy is abelian (resp. solvable), and factorization results.

Abstract:Given a compact Riemannian manifold $M^{n+1}$ with dimension $3\leq n+1\leq 7$ and $\partial M\neq\emptyset$, the free boundary min-max theory built by Martin Man-Chun Li and Xin Zhou shows the existence of a smooth almost properly embedded minimal hypersurface with free boundary in $\partial M$. In this paper, we generalize their constructions into equivariant settings. Specifically, let $G$ be a compact Lie group acting as isometries on $M$ with cohomogeneity at least $3$. Then we show that there exists a nontrivial smooth almost properly embedded $G$-invariant minimal hypersurface with free boundary. Moreover, if the Ricci curvature of $M$ is non-negative and $\partial M$ is strictly convex, then there exist infinitely many properly embedded $G$-invariant minimal hypersurfaces with free boundary.

Stability and largeness properties of minimal surfaces in higher codimension

Abstract:We consider stable minimal surfaces of genus 1 in Euclidean space and in Riemannian manifolds. Under the condition of covering stability (all finite covers are stable) we show that a genus 1 finite total curvature minimal surface in $\mathbb R^n$ lies in an even dimensional affine subspace and is holomorphic for some constant orthogonal complex structure. For stable minimal tori in Riemannian manifolds we give an explicit bound on the systole in terms of a positive lower bound on the isotropic curvature. As an application we estimate the systole of noncyclic abelian subgroups of the fundamental group of PIC manifolds. This gives a new proof of the result of [5] that the fundamental cannot contain a noncyclic free abelian subgroup. The proofs apply the structure theory of holomorphic vector bundles over genus 1 Riemann surfaces developed by M. Atiyah [2].

A conformal invariant and its application to the nonexistence of minimal submanifolds

Abstract:Let $(M^m,g)$ be an $m$-dimensional closed Riemannian manifold with non-negative sectional curvatures, $m\ge 3$. We define a conformal invariant and prove that, if the conformal invariant is bounded from above by a constant depending only on $m$, then there are no closed $n$-dimensional stable minimal submanifolds in $M$ for all $\xi(m)\le n\le m-2$, where $\xi(m)=1$ when $3\le m\le 5$ and $\xi(m)=2$ when $m\ge 6$. In particular, a conformal $m$-sphere with non-negative sectional curvatures does not admit any closed $n$-dimensional stable minimal submanifold for all $\xi(m)\le n\le m-2$.

Abstract:It is proved that any (repetitive) Riemannian manifold of bounded geometry can be realized as a leaf of some (minimal) Riemannian matchbox manifold without holonomy. Our methods can be adapted to achieve Cantor transversals or a prescribed holonomy covering, but then the manifold may not be realized as a dense leaf.

On free boundary minimal submanifolds in geodesic balls in $\mathbb H^n$ and $\mathbb S^n_+$

Abstract:We consider free boundary minimal submanifolds in geodesic balls in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb H^n$ and in the round upper hemisphere $\mathbb S^n_+$. Recently, Lima and Menezes have found a connection between free boundary minimal surfaces in geodesic balls in $\mathbb S^n_+$ and maximal metrics for a functional, defined on the set of Riemannian metrics on a given compact surface with boundary. This connection is similar to the connection between free boundary minimal submanifolds in Euclidean balls and the critical metrics of the functional \say{the $k$-th normalized Steklov eigenvalue}, introduced by Faser and Schoen. We define two natural functionals on the set of Riemannian metrics on a compact surface with boundary. One of these functionals is the high order generalization of the functional, introduced by Lima and Menezes. We prove that the critical metrics for these functionals arise as metrics induced by free boundary minimal immersions in geodesic balls in $\mathbb H^n$ and in $\mathbb S^n_+$, respectively. We also prove a converse statement. Besides that, we discuss the (Morse) index of free boundary minimal submanifolds in geodesic balls in $\mathbb H^n$ or $\mathbb S^n_+$. We show that the index of the critical spherical catenoids in these spaces is 4 and the index of a geodesic $k$-ball is $2(n-k)$. For the proof of these statements we introduce the notion of spectral index similarly to the case of free boundary minimal submanifolds in a unit ball in the Euclidean space.

On Small Gaps in the Length Spectrum

Abstract:We discuss upper and lower bounds for the size of gaps in the length spectrum of negatively curved manifolds. For manifolds with algebraic generators for the fundamental group, we establish the existence of exponential lower bounds for the gaps. On the other hand, we show that the existence of arbitrary small gaps is topologically generic: this is established both for surfaces of constant negative curvature (Theorem 3.1), and for the space of negatively curved metrics (Theorem 4.1). While arbitrary small gaps are topologically generic, it is plausible that the gaps are not too small for almost every metric. One result in this direction is presented in Section 5.

Abstract:In this paper, we first prove a compactness theorem for the space of closed embedded f -minimal surfaces of fixed topology in a closed three-manifold with positive Bakry–Émery Ricci curvature. Then we give a Lichnerowicz type lower bound of the first eigenvalue of the f -Laplacian on a compact manifold with positive m -Bakry–Émery Ricci curvature, and prove that the lower bound is achieved only if the manifold is isometric to the n -sphere, or the n -dimensional hemisphere. Finally, for a compact manifold with positive m -Bakry–Émery Ricci curvature and f -mean convex boundary, we prove an upper bound for the distance function to the boundary, and the upper bound is achieved if and only if the manifold is isometric to a Euclidean ball.

Abstract:We compute the Laplacian spectra of singular area-minimising hypersurfaces in the hyperbolic space with prescribed asymptotic data. We also obtain similar results in higher codimension, and explore related extremal properties of the bottom of the spectrum.

Abstract:We investigated minimal helix submanifolds of any dimension and codimension immersed in Euclidean space. Our main result proves that a ruled minimal helix submanifold is a cylinder. As an application we classify complex helix submanifolds of Cn$${\mathbb {C}}^n$$: They are extrinsic products with a complex line as a factor. The key tool is Corollary 1.3 which allows us to classify Riemannian foliations of open subsets of the Euclidean space with minimal leaves. Finally, we consider the case of a helix hypersurface with constant mean curvature and prove that it is either a cylinder or an open part of a hyperplane.
Foliations of asymptotically flat 3-manifolds by stable constant mean curvature spheres

Abstract:Let $(M,g)$ be an asymptotically flat Riemannian manifold of dimension $n\geq 3$ with positive mass. We give a short proof based on Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction of the existence of an asymptotic foliation of $(M, g)$ by stable constant mean curvature spheres. Moreover, we show that the geometric center of mass of the foliation agrees with the Hamiltonian center of mass of $(M,g)$. In dimension $n = 3$, these results were shown previously by C. Nerz using a different approach. In the case where $n=3$ and the scalar curvature of $(M, g)$ is nonnegative, we prove that the leaves of the asymptotic foliation are the only large stable constant mean curvature spheres that enclose the center of $(M, g)$. This was shown previously under more restrictive decay assumptions and using a different method by S. Ma.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a number of results about the topology of the leaves of a closed singular Riemannian foliation $(M,\fol)$. If $M$ is simply connected, we prove that the leaves are finitely covered by nilpotent spaces, and characterize the fundamental group of the generic leaves. If $M$ has virtually nilpotent fundamental group, we prove that the leaves have virtually nilpotent fundamental group as well.
