Abstract:A canonical ensemble model is used to describe a caloric curve of nuclear liquid-gas phase transition. Allowing a discontinuity in the freeze out density from one spinodal density to another for a given initial temperature, the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition can be described as first order. Averaging over various freeze out densities of all the possible initial temperatures for a given total reaction energy, the first order characteristics of liquid-gas phase transition is smeared out to a smooth transition. Two experiments, one at low beam energy and one at high beam energy show different caloric behaviors and are discussed.

Abstract:For a compact spin Riemannian manifold $(M,g^{TM})$ of dimension $n$ such that the associated scalar curvature $k^{TM}$ verifies that $k^{TM}\geqslant n(n-1)$, Llarull's rigidity theorem says that any area-decreasing smooth map $f$ from $M$ to the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n}$ of nonzero degree is an isometry. We present in this paper a new proof for Llarull's rigidity theorem in odd dimensions via a spectral flow argument. This approach also works for a generalization of Llarrull's theorem when the sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n}$ is replaced by an arbitrary smooth strictly convex closed hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. The results answer two questions by Gromov.

Abstract:We prove that every closed, smooth $n$-manifold $X$ admits a Riemannian metric together with a smooth, transversely oriented CMC foliation if and only if its Euler characteristic is zero, where by CMC foliation we mean a codimension-one, transversely oriented foliation with leaves of constant mean curvature and where the value of the constant mean curvature can vary from leaf to leaf. Furthermore, we prove that this CMC foliation of $X$ can be chosen so that the constant values of the mean curvatures of its leaves change sign. We also prove a general structure theorem for any such non-minimal CMC foliation of $X$ that describes relationships between the geometry and topology of the leaves, including the property that there exist compact leaves for every attained value of the mean curvature.

Abstract:We are concerned in this article with a classical topic in spectral geometry dating back to McKean-Singer, Patodi and Tanno: whether or not the constancy of sectional curvature (resp. holomorphic sectional curvature) of a compact Riemannian manifold (resp. Kähler manifold) can be completely determined by the eigenvalues of its $p$-Laplacian for a \emph{single} integer $p$? We treat this question under two conditions: gradient shrinking Ricci soliton for Riemannian manifolds and cohomologically Einstein for Kähler manifolds. We show that, with some sporadic unknown cases, this is true for each $p$. Furthermore, we show that the condition of being isospectral can be relaxed to a suitable almost-isospectral version.

We classify (1) totally geodesic Legendrian surfaces, (2) closed minimal Legendrian surfaces of genus smaller than or equal to 1 and complete minimal Legendrian surfaces with the non-negative Gauss curvature, and (3) complete stable minimal Legendrian surfaces.

Spectral geometry on manifolds with fibred boundary metrics I: Low energy resolvent

Abstract:We study the low energy resolvent of the Hodge Laplacian on a manifold equipped with a fibred boundary metric. We determine the precise asymptotic behavior of the resolvent as a fibred boundary (aka $\phi$-) pseudodifferential operator when the resolvent parameter tends to zero. This generalizes previous work by Guillarmou and Sher who considered asymptotically conic metrics, which correspond to the special case when the fibres are points. The new feature in the case of non-trivial fibres is that the resolvent has different asymptotic behavior on the subspace of forms that are fibrewise harmonic and on its orthogonal complement. To deal with this, we introduce an appropriate 'split' pseudodifferential calculus, building on and extending work by Grieser and Hunsicker. Our work sets the basis for the discussion of spectral invariants on $\phi$-manifolds.

Abstract:The spectral geometry of negatively curved manifolds has received more attention than its positive curvature counterpart. In this paper we will survey a variety of spectral geometry results that are known to hold in the context of hyperbolic manifolds and discuss the extent to which analogous results hold in the setting of spherical manifolds. We conclude with a number of open problems.

Abstract:Let M be an oriented three-dimensional Riemannian manifold of constant sectional curvature and let be its direct orthonormal frame bundle (direct refers to positive orientation), which may be thought of as the set of all positions of a small body in M . Given , there is a three-dimensional distribution on accounting for infinitesimal rototranslations of constant pitch . When , there is a canonical sub-Riemannian structure on . We present a geometric characterization of its geodesics, using a previous Lie theoretical description. For , we compute the sub-Riemannian length spectrum of in terms of the complex length spectrum of M (given by the lengths and the holonomies of the periodic geodesics) when M has positive injectivity radius. In particular, for two complex length isospectral closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds (even if they are not isometric), the associated sub-Riemannian metrics on their direct orthonormal bundles are length isospectral.

Abstract:A singular foliation $\mathcal{F}$ on a complete Riemannian manifold $M$ is called Singular Riemannian foliation (SRF for short) if its leaves are locally equidistant, e.g., the partition of $M$ into orbits of an isometric action. In this paper, we investigate variational problems in compact Riemannian manifolds equipped with SRF with special properties, e.g. isoparametric foliations, SRF on fibers bundles with Sasaki metric, and orbit-like foliations. More precisely, we prove two results analogous to Palais' Principle of Symmetric Criticality, one is a general principle for $\mathcal{F}$ symmetric operators on the Hilbert space $W^{1,2}(M)$, the other one is for $\mathcal{F}$ symmetric integral operators on the Banach spaces $W^{1,p}(M)$. These results together with a $\mathcal{F}$ version of Rellich Kondrachov Hebey Vaugon Embedding Theorem allow us to circumvent difficulties with Sobolev's critical exponents when considering applications of Calculus of Variations to find solutions to PDEs. To exemplify this we prove the existence of weak solutions to a class of variational problems which includes $p$-Kirschoff problems.

Abstract:A contact distribution on projective three-space is defined by the 1-form $x_2dx_1-x_1dx_2+x_4dx_3-x_3dx_4$, up to a change of projective coordinates. The family of contact distributions is parameterized by the complement of the Pfaff-Plücker quadric in the projective 5-space of antisymmetric $4\times4$ matrices. A foliation of dimension 1 and degree $d$ is specified by a polynomial vector field $\sum{}p_i\partial_{x_i}, p_i$ homogeneous of degree $d$. The foliation is called Legendrian if tangent to some distribution of contact. Our goal is to give formulas for the dimensions and degrees of the varieties of Legendrian foliations, and of the varieties of foliations tangent to a pencil of planes.

Transverse Geometry of Lorentzian foliations with applications to Lorentzian orbifolds

Abstract:We prove a transverse diameter theorem in the context of Lorentzian foliations, which can be interpreted as a Hawking--Penrose-type singularity theorem for timelike geodesics transverse to the foliation. In order to develop the necessary machinery we introduce and study a novel causality structure on the leaf space via the transverse Lorentzian geometry on the foliated manifold. We describe the initial rungs of a transverse causal ladder and relate them to their standard counterparts on an underlying foliated spacetime. We show how these results can be interpreted as doing Lorentzian (and more generally semi-Riemannian) geometry on low-regularity spaces that can be realized as leaf spaces of foliations. Accordingly, we discuss how all of these concepts and results apply to Lorentzian orbifolds, insofar as these can be seen as leaf spaces of a specific class of Lorentzian foliations. In particular, we derive an associated Lorentzian timelike diameter theorem on orbifolds.

A Weyl's Law for Singular Riemannian Foliations with Applications to Invariant Theory

Abstract:We prove a version of Weyl's Law for the basic spectrum of a closed singular Riemannian foliation $(M,\mathcal{F})$ with basic mean curvature. In the special case of $M=\mathbb{S}^n$, this gives an explicit formula for the volume of the leaf space $\mathbb{S}^n/\mathcal{F}$ in terms of the algebra of basic polynomials. In particular, $\operatorname{Vol}(\mathbb{S}^n/\mathcal{F})$ is a rational multiple of $\operatorname{Vol}(\mathbb{S}^m)$, where $m=\dim (\mathbb{S}^n/\mathcal{F})$.

Abstract:We study the geometry of a weak Riemannian metric on the infinite dimensional manifold of compact spacelike Cauchy hypersurfaces in a globally hyperbolic spacetime. We show that the geodesic distance (i.e. the infimum of lengths of paths between two given points) is positive, and that the sectional curvature is well defined and non-positive.

Abstract:Given a function $f$ on a smooth Riemannian manifold without boundary, we prove that if $p \in M$ is a non-degenerate critical point of $f$, then a neighborhood of $p$ contains a foliation by spheres with mean curvature proportional to $f$. This foliation is essentially unique. The nondegeneracy assumption can be substantially relaxed, at the expense of losing the property that the family of spheres with prescribed mean curvature defines a foliation.

Abstract:An extension of Riemmann's geometry into a direction dependent geometric structure is usually described by Finsler's geometry. Historically, this construction was motivated by the well-known Riemann's quartic length element example. Quite surprisingly, the same quartic expression emerges in solid-state electrodynamics as a basic dispersion relation -- covariant Fresnel equation. Consequently, Riemann's quartic length expression can be interpreted as a mathematical model of a well-established physics phenomena. In this paper, we present various examples of Riemann's quartic that demonstrate that Finsler's geometry is too restrictive even in the case of a positive definite Euclidean signature space. In the case of the spaces endowed with an indefinite (Minkowski) signature, there are much more singular hypersurfaces where the strong axioms of Finsler's geometry are broken down. We propose a weaker definition of Finsler's structure that is required to be satisfied only on open subsets of the tangent bundle. We exhibit the characteristic singular hypersurfaces related to Riemann's quartic and briefly discuss their possible physical interpretation.

Abstract:We study the tangential case in 2-dimensional almost-Riemannian geometry. We analyse the connection with the Martinet case in sub-Riemannian geometry. We compute estimations of the exponential map which allow us to describe the conjugate locus and the cut locus at a tangency point. We prove that this last one generically accumulates at the tangency point as an asymmetric cusp whose branches are separated by the singular set.

Abstract:We consider how the geometry and topology of a compact $n$-dimensional Riemannian orbifold with boundary relates to its Steklov spectrum. In two dimensions, motivated by work of A. Girouard, L. Parnovski, I. Polterovich and D. Sher in the manifold setting, we compute the precise asymptotics of the Steklov spectrum in terms of only boundary data. As a consequence, we prove that the Steklov spectrum detects the presence and number of orbifold singularities on the boundary of an orbisurface and it detects the number each of smooth and singular boundary components. Moreover, we find that the Steklov spectrum also determines the lengths of the boundary components modulo an equivalence relation, and we show by examples that this result is the best possible. We construct various examples of Steklov isospectral Riemannian orbifolds which demonstrate that these two-dimensional results do not extend to higher dimensions. In addition, we give two-dimensional examples which show that the Steklov spectrum does \emph{not} detect the presence of interior singularities nor does it determine the orbifold Euler characteristic. In fact, a flat disk is Steklov isospectral to a cone. In another direction, we obtain upper bounds on the Steklov eigenvalues of a Riemannian orbifold in terms of the isoperimetric ratio and a conformal invariant. We generalize results of B. Colbois, A. El Soufi and A. Girouard, and the fourth author to the orbifold setting; in the process, we gain a sharpness result on these bounds that was not evident in the manifold setting. In dimension two, our eigenvalue bounds are solely in terms of the orbifold Euler characteristic and the number each of smooth and singular boundary components.
