Abstract:We show that the Hausdorff dimension of the singular set of perimeter minimizers in non-collapsed Ricci limit spaces with a two-sided Ricci curvature bound is at most $N-5$, where $N$ is the dimension of the ambient space. The estimate is sharp.

Abstract:In this note, we prove that positive scalar curvature can pass to three dimensional Ricci limit spaces of non-negative Ricci curvature when it splits off a line. As a corollary, we obtain an optimal Bonnet-Myers type upper bound. Moreover, we obtain a similar statement in all dimensions for Alexandrov spaces of non-negative curvature.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the rigidity for an n(≥ 4) -dimensional submanifold M^n with parallel mean curvature in the space form 𝕄^n+p_c when the integral Ricci curvature of M has some bound. We prove that, if c+H^2>0 and ‖Ric_-^λ‖ _n/2< ϵ (n,c, λ , H) for λ satisfying n-2n-1 (c+H^2) < λ≤ c+H^2 , then M is the totally umbilical sphere 𝕊^n( 1√(c+H^2)) . Here H is the norm of the parallel mean curvature of M , and ϵ (n,c,λ , H) is a positive constant depending only on n, c,λ and H . This extends part of the earlier work of Xu and Gu (Geom Funct Anal 23(5):1684–1703, 2013) from pointwise Ricci curvature lower bound to integral Ricci curvature lower bound.

Abstract:This paper studies sharp isoperimetric comparison theorems and sharp dimensional concavity properties of the isoperimetric profile for non smooth spaces with lower Ricci curvature bounds, the so-called $N$-dimensional ${\rm RCD}(K,N)$ spaces $(X,\mathsf{d},\mathscr{H}^N)$. The absence of most of the classical tools of Geometric Measure Theory and the possible non existence of isoperimetric regions on non compact spaces are handled via an original argument to estimate first and second variation of the area for isoperimetric sets, avoiding any regularity theory, in combination with an asymptotic mass decomposition result of perimeter-minimizing sequences. Most of our statements are new even for smooth, non compact manifolds with lower Ricci curvature bounds and for Alexandrov spaces with lower sectional curvature bounds. They generalize several results known for compact manifolds, non compact manifolds with uniformly bounded geometry at infinity, and Euclidean convex bodies.

Abstract:In this note, we will show that if a measured Gromov-Hausdorff limit space of a sequence of Riemannian manifolds with lower Ricci curvature bound has dense 2-regular set, then it is homeomorphic to a 2-dimensional manifold in an open full measure set. This result gives a positive answer to an open problem in [Naber, Open problem 3.4] in dimension 2 and for dimension larger than 2 there are counterexamples by [HNW, Zhou].

Abstract:This paper studies sharp and rigid isoperimetric comparison theorems and asymptotic isoperimetric properties for small and large volumes on $N$-dimensional ${\rm RCD}(K,N)$ spaces $(X,\mathsf{d},\mathscr{H}^N)$. Moreover, we obtain almost regularity theorems formulated in terms of the isoperimetric profile and enhanced consequences at the level of several functional inequalities. Most of our statements are new even in the classical setting of smooth, non compact manifolds with lower Ricci curvature bounds. The synthetic theory plays a key role via compactness and stability arguments.

Abstract:We investigate the influence of uniformly positive scalar curvature on the size of a non-collapsed Ricci limit space coming from a sequence of $n$-manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature and uniformly positive scalar curvature. We prove that such a limit space splits at most $n-2$ lines or $\mathbb{R}$-factors. When this maximal splitting occurs, we obtain a uniform upper bound on the diameter of the non-splitting factor. Moreover, we obtain a volume gap estimate and a volume growth order estimate of geodesic balls on such manifolds.

Abstract:We prove several analogs of Gromov's macroscopic dimension conjecture with extra curvature assumptions. More explicitly, we show that for an open Riemannian $n$-manifold $(M,g)$ of nonnegative Ricci (resp. sectional) curvature, if it has uniformly positive scalar curvature and it is uniformly volume noncollapsed, then the essential (resp. Hausdorff) dimension of an asymptotic cone, as a notion of largeness, has a sharp upper bound $n-2$, which is $2$ less than the upper bound for an open Riemannian manifold with only nonnegative Ricci curvature. As a consequence, the dimension of space of linear growth harmonic functions of $M$ has upper bound $n-1$ which is also $2$ less than the sharp bound $n+1$ when $M$ only has nonnegative Ricci curvature. We also prove the first Betti number upper bound is $n-2$ if $M$ is compact, and $n-3$ if $M$ is non-compact. When $M$ is compact we show a fibration theorem over torus, and a rigidity theorem for the fiber when the first Betti number upper bound is achieved.

Abstract:The paper establishes a sharp and rigid isoperimetric-type inequality in Lorentzian signature under the assumption of Ricci curvature bounded below in the timelike directions. The inequality is proved in the high generality of Lorentzian pre-length spaces satisfying timelike Ricci lower bounds in a synthetic sense via optimal transport, the so-called $\mathsf{TCD}^e_p(K,N)$ spaces. The results are new already for smooth Lorentzian manifolds. Applications include an upper bound on the area of Cauchy hypersurfaces inside the interior of a black hole (original already in Schwarzschild) and an upper bound on the area of Cauchy hypersurfaces in cosmological space-times.

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with noncollapsed Riemannian manifolds $(M^{n},g)$ with integral curvature bounds, as well as their Gromov-Hausdorff limits $(M^{n}_{i},g_{i})\xrightarrow{GH}(X,d)$. Our main result generalizes Cheeger's Hausdorff dimension estimate for the singular set in [7] and improve it into Minkowski dimension estimate in the spirit of Cheeger-Naber [12]. We also prove a difffeomorphism finiteness theorem for manifolds in the critical case, using Cheeger-Naber's methods in [13].

Convergence of the area functional on spaces with lower Ricci bounds and applications

Abstract:The goal of this note is to prove convergence results w.r.t. the area functional on metric measure spaces with a lower Ricci curvature bound. The paper can be divided in two parts. In the first part, we show that the heat flow provides good approximation properties for the area functional on $RCD(K,\infty)$ spaces, implying that in this setting the area formula for functions of bounded variation holds and that the area functional coincides with its relaxation. Moreover, we obtain partial regularity and uniqueness results for functions whose epigraphs are perimeter minimizing. In the second part of the paper, we consider Ricci limit spaces (and also finite dimensional $RCD(K,N)$ spaces for some results) and we show that, thanks to the previously obtained properties, minimizers of the area functional can be approximated with minimizers along the converging sequence of manifolds. As a first application, we show that minimizers of the area functional on non-collapsed Ricci limit spaces are locally Lipschitz and satisfy a-priori gradient estimates. Secondly, we obtain a Bernstein-type result for area minimizers with sublinear growth at infinity.

Nonexistence of isoperimetric sets in spaces of positive curvature

Abstract:For every $d\ge 3$, we construct a noncompact smooth $d$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with strictly positive sectional curvature without isoperimetric sets for any volume below $1$. We construct a similar example also for the relative isoperimetric problem in (unbounded) convex sets in $\mathbb R^d$. The examples we construct have nondegenerate asymptotic cone. The dimensional constraint $d\ge 3$ is sharp. Our examples exhibit nonexistence of isoperimetric sets only for small volumes; indeed in nonnegatively curved spaces with nondegenerate asymptotic cones isoperimetric sets with large volumes always exist. This is the first instance of noncollapsed nonnegatively curved space without isoperimetric sets.

Abstract:We construct metrics of positive $2^{\rm nd}$ intermediate Ricci curvature, $\mathrm{Ric}_2>0$, on closed manifolds of dimensions 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14, including $\mathbb{S}^6\times\mathbb{S}^7$, $\mathbb{S}^7\times\mathbb{S}^7$ and all their simply connected isometric quotients. In particular, we obtain infinitely many examples in dimension 13. We also produce infinitely many non-simply connected spaces with $\mathrm{Ric}_2>0$ in dimensions 13 and 14, including $\mathbb{RP}^6\times \mathbb{RP}^7$ and $\mathbb{RP}^7\times \mathbb{RP}^7$, which cannot admit a metric of positive sectional curvature. The main new idea is a generalization of the concept of fatness which ensures the existence of $\mathrm{Ric}_2>0$ metrics on the total space of certain homogeneous bundles.

Abstract:Let a planar residual set be a set obtained by removing countably many disjoint topological disks from an open set in the plane. We prove that the residual set of a planar packing by curves that satisfy a certain lower curvature bound has Hausdorff dimension bounded away from 1, quantitatively, depending only on the curvature bound. As a corollary, the residual set of any circle packing has Hausdorff dimension uniformly bounded away from 1. This result generalizes the result of Larman, who obtained the same conclusion for circle packings inside a square. We also show that our theorem is optimal and does not hold in general without lower curvature bounds. In particular, we construct packings by strictly convex, smooth curves whose residual sets have dimension 1. On the other hand, we prove that any packing by strictly convex curves cannot have $\sigma$-finite Hausdorff 1-measure.

Abstract:In <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2207.08617" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2207.08617">arXiv:2207.08617</a> [math.DG] Brendle-Hirsch-Johne proved that $T^m\times S^{n-m}$ does not admit metrics with positive $m$-intermediate curvature when $n\leq 7$. Chu-Kwong-Lee showed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2208.12240" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2208.12240">arXiv:2208.12240</a> [math.DG] a corresponding rigidity statement when $n\leq 5$. In this paper, we show the sharpness of the dimension constraints by giving concrete counterexamples in $n\geq 7$ and extending the rigidity result to $n=6$. Concerning uniformly positive intermediate curvature, we show that simply-connected manifolds with dimension $\leq 5$ and bi-Ricci curvature $\geq 1$ have finite Urysohn 1-width. Counterexamples are constructed in dimension $\geq 6$.
