Abstract:The research of high energy and nuclear physics requires high power accelerators, and the superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavity is regarded as their engine. Up to now, the widely used practical and effective material for making the SRF cavity is pure Nb. The key parameter that governs the efficiency and the accelerating field (E_acc) of a SRF cavity is the lower critical field Hc1. Here, we report a significant improvement of Hc1 for a new type of alloy, Nb_{1-x}Y_x fabricated by the arc melting technique. Experimental investigations with multiple tools including x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, resistivity and magnetization are carried out, showing that the samples have good quality and a 30%-60% enhancement of Hc1. First principle calculations indicate that this improvement is induced by the delicate tuning of a Lifshitz transition of a Nb derivative band near the Fermi energy, which increases the Ginzburg-Landau parameter and Hc1. Our results may trigger a replacement of the basic material and thus a potential revolution for manufacturing the SRF cavity.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to increase the lower critical magnetic field \(H_{c1}\) of niobium (Nb) - based superconducting radio - frequency cavities (SRF cavities) in order to enhance their accelerating electric field gradient \(E_{acc}\) and overall performance. Specifically, the researchers prepared Nb\(_{1 - x}\)Y\(_x\) alloys by doping yttrium (Y) into pure niobium and verified the significant increase in the lower critical magnetic field \(H_{c1}\) of this alloy through a variety of experimental means. Studies have shown that the \(H_{c1}\) of Nb\(_{1 - x}\)Y\(_x\) alloys is 30% - 60% higher than that of pure niobium, which may make Nb\(_{1 - x}\)Y\(_x\) an ideal material to replace pure niobium in the manufacture of SRF cavities, and may thus trigger a revolution in the field of SRF cavity manufacturing. The key point of the paper is to optimize the superconducting properties of materials, especially to increase \(H_{c1}\), by precisely controlling the doping ratio, which is crucial for high - performance accelerators required in high - energy physics and nuclear physics research. Through theoretical calculations, the researchers also explained the physical mechanism of this performance improvement, that is, by finely adjusting the Lifshitz transition near the Fermi level of the niobium - derived band, increasing the Ginzburg - Landau parameters \(\kappa\) and \(H_{c1}\). These findings are not only of great significance to materials science, but also provide a new direction for the future design and manufacture of SRF cavities.
