Abstract:The paper deals with the resolution of third and fourth degree equations by means of radicals. It is a survey of some historical details about this fundamental problem. Moreover, it explains practical methods for the resolution of third and fourth degree equation through the algebraic side and we introduce some results about the equations of greater degree. Mathematicians and complex numbers and the results of rules of calculations as well as having completed the theory of equations model Mathematics in different historical and chronological contexts at several levels of research. The subject would join a reference auditorium for authors, teachers and students at a time when the context of collocation favors algebraic equations and radical solutions.
History and Overview
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the problem of solving cubic and quartic algebraic equations and their historical background. Specifically, the paper explores the following aspects: 1. **Solving Cubic Equations**: - The paper provides a detailed account of the efforts and achievements of mathematicians from the ancient Babylonian period to the Renaissance in solving cubic equations. - It particularly mentions the contributions of Scipione del Ferro, Niccolò Tartaglia, Gerolamo Cardano, and Ludovico Ferrari. - It describes the development of the Cardano formula and its application in solving cubic equations. 2. **Solving Quartic Equations**: - The paper discusses the early research on quartic equations by Arab and Indian mathematicians. - It provides a detailed introduction to the method proposed by Ludovico Ferrari for solving quartic equations, as well as Euler's method. - It explains how Ferrari's method solves quartic equations by introducing new variables to transform them into cubic equations. 3. **Historical Background**: - The paper reviews the history of solving algebraic equations, including the research on algebraic equations by ancient civilizations such as Babylon, Egypt, India, and China. - It emphasizes the importance of algebraic equations in the development of mathematics and introduces relevant historical figures and their contributions. 4. **Solving Higher-Degree Equations**: - The paper also briefly introduces the work of Evariste Galois, particularly the application of Galois theory in studying the solutions of higher-degree equations (especially quintic and higher-degree equations). - It mentions how Galois theory proved that quintic and higher-degree equations do not have a general solution in radicals. In summary, the paper aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to the methods of solving cubic and quartic algebraic equations and their historical background, while also exploring the significance and impact of these methods in the history of mathematics.
