Abstract:We present a general algorithm for solving all two-variable polynomial Diophantine equations consisting of three monomials. Before this work, even the existence of an algorithm for solving the one-parameter family of equations $x^4+axy+y^3=0$ has been an open question. We also present an elementary method that reduces the task of finding all integer solutions to a general three-monomial equation to the task of finding primitive solutions to equations with three monomials in disjoint variables. We identify a large class of three-monomial equations for which this method leads to a complete solution. Empirical data suggests that this class contains $100\%$ of three-monomial equations as the number of variables goes to infinity.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to develop a general algorithm for solving all binary polynomial Diophantine equations composed of three monomials. Specifically, the goals of the paper include: 1. **Propose a general algorithm**: The paper proposes a general algorithm that can solve all binary trinomial Diophantine equations in the form of \(ax^n y^q + bx^k y^l + cx^r y^m = 0\), where \(a\), \(b\), \(c\) are non - zero integers, and \(n\), \(q\), \(k\), \(l\), \(r\), \(m\) are non - negative integers. 2. **Solve a specific family of equations**: Before proposing the general algorithm, the paper first solves a specific family of equations \(x^4+axy + y^3 = 0\), which has long been considered difficult to solve effectively. Through this example, the effectiveness of the general algorithm is demonstrated. 3. **Simplify equation solving**: The paper also introduces a method that can simplify any equation containing three monomials (regardless of the number of variables) into a finite number of equations with three monomials and disjoint variables. This makes many complex equations solvable by known methods. 4. **Identify the class of solvable equations**: The paper identifies a large class of trinomial equations that can be completely solved by the above methods. Experimental data shows that as the number of variables increases, the proportion of such equations approaches 100%. ### Specific problem analysis #### 1. Proposal of the general algorithm One of the main contributions of the paper is to propose a general algorithm that can solve all binary polynomial Diophantine equations composed of three monomials. This algorithm utilizes profound results in the classical two - variable Diophantine equation theory, such as Baker's method for solving hyperelliptic equations and Walsh's effective version of Runge's theorem. #### 2. Solution of a specific family of equations The paper demonstrates the effectiveness of the general algorithm by solving a specific family of equations \(x^4+axy + y^3 = 0\). This family of equations was once considered difficult to solve effectively, but all integer solutions can be found by the method in the paper. #### 3. Equation simplification method The paper proposes a method that can simplify any equation containing three monomials into a finite number of equations with three monomials and disjoint variables. In many cases, this method can make the original equation easier to solve or already solvable by methods in the literature. #### 4. Identification of the class of solvable equations The paper identifies a large class of trinomial equations that can be completely solved by the above methods. Experimental data shows that as the number of variables increases, the proportion of such equations approaches 100%. ### Mathematical formulas The mathematical formulas involved in the paper include: - General form of the trinomial equation: \[ ax^n y^q + bx^k y^l + cx^r y^m = 0 \] - Form of the specific family of equations: \[ x^4+axy + y^3 = 0 \] Through these formulas, the paper shows how to systematically solve complex Diophantine equations and provides new tools and methods for future research.
