Abstract: In this paper, we consider some hybrid Diophantine equations of addition and multiplication. We first improve a result on new Hilbert-Waring problem. Then we consider the equation \begin{equation} \begin{cases} A+B=C ABC=D^n \end{cases} \end{equation} where $A,B,C,D,n \in\ZZ_{+}$ and $n\geq3$, which may be regarded as a generalization of Fermat's equation $x^n+y^n=z^n$. When $\gcd(A,B,C)=1$, $(1)$ is equivalent to Fermat's equation, which means it has no positive integer solutions. We discuss several cases for $\gcd(A,B,C)=p^k$ where $p$ is an odd prime. In particular, for $k=1$ we prove that $(1)$ has no nonzero integer solutions when $n=3$ and we conjecture that it is also true for any prime $n>3$. Finally, we consider equation $(1)$ in quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{t})$ for $n=3$.

Abstract:Solving the Diophantine equation has fascinated mathematicians from various civilizations. In this paper, we propose the resolution of quadratic Diophantine equations with integer coefficients. Our contribution consists of generalizing certain results which have already been developed in the literature. This paper also proposes the criterion on the solvability of the quadratic Diophantine equation here studied.

Abstract:We present a general algorithm for solving all two-variable polynomial Diophantine equations consisting of three monomials. Before this work, even the existence of an algorithm for solving the one-parameter family of equations $x^4+axy+y^3=0$ has been an open question. We also present an elementary method that reduces the task of finding all integer solutions to a general three-monomial equation to the task of finding primitive solutions to equations with three monomials in disjoint variables. We identify a large class of three-monomial equations for which this method leads to a complete solution. Empirical data suggests that this class contains $100\%$ of three-monomial equations as the number of variables goes to infinity.

Abstract:We consider the number of solutions in positive integers $(x,y,z)$ for the purely exponential Diophantine equation $a^x+b^y =c^z$ (with $\gcd(a,b)=1$). Apart from a list of known exceptions, a conjecture published in 2016 claims that this equation has at most one solution in positive integers $x$, $y$, and $z$. We show that this is true for some ranges of $a$, $b$, $c$, for instance, when $1 < a,b < 3600$ and $c<10^{10}$. The conjecture also holds for small pairs $(a,b)$ independent of $c$, where $2 \le a,b \le 10$ with $\gcd(a,b)=1$. We show that the Pillai equation $a^x - b^y = r > 0$ has at most one solution (with a known list of exceptions) when $2 \le a,b \le 3600$. Finally, the primitive case of the Jeśmanowicz conjecture holds when $a \le 10^6$ or when $b \le 10^6$. This work highlights the power of some ideas of Miyazaki and Pink and the usefulness of a theorem by Scott.

On a Pair of Diophantine Equations

Abstract:For relatively prime natural numbers $a$ and $b$, we study the two equations $ax+by = (a-1)(b-1)/2$ and $ax+by+1= (a-1)(b-1)/2$, which arise from the study of cyclotomic polynomials. Previous work showed that exactly one equation has a nonnegative solution, and the solution is unique. Our first result gives criteria to determine which equation is used for a given pair $(a,b)$. We then use the criteria to study the sequence of equations used by the pair $(a_n/\gcd{(a_n, a_{n+1})}, a_{n+1}/\gcd{(a_n, a_{n+1})})$ from several special sequences $(a_n)_{n\geq 1}$. Finally, fixing $k \in \mathbb{N}$, we investigate the periodicity of the sequence of equations used by the pair $(k/\gcd{(k, n)}, n/\gcd{(k, n)})$ as $n$ increases.

Abstract:Let $f\in {\mathbb {Q}}[X]$ be a polynomial without multiple roots and $deg(f)\ge 2$. We consider the Diophantine equation $f(x)f(y)=f(z^2)$. For two classes of irreducible quadratic polynomials, this equation has infinitely many nontrivial integer solutions, if the corresponding Pell’s equations satisfy a condition. For a special cubic polynomial, it has a one-parameter family of rational solutions. For $f(X)=X(X^2+X+k)$ and $X(X^2+kX+1)$ there are infinitely many $k \in {\mathbb {Q}}$ such that the title equation has rational solutions.
A Variety of Euler's Conjecture

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler's conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system n=a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1, a_1a_2⋯ a_s-1(a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1)=b^s has solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+,i=1,2,…,s-1,s≥ 3. By using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ for s=3, but for s=4 it has infinitely many solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ and for s≥ 5 there are infinitely many polynomial solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ[t_1,t_2,…,t_s-3] with positive value satisfying this Diophantine system.

Abstract:In this note we consider the title Diophantine equation from both theoretical as well as experimental point of view. In particular, we prove that for $k=4, 6$ and each choice of the signs our equation has infinitely many co-prime positive integer solutions. For $k=5, 7$ and all choices of the signs we computed all co-prime positive integer solutions $(x, y, a, b)$ satisfying the condition $\op{max}\{a, b\}\leq 50000$.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.

Abstract:Generalizing an argument of Matiyasevich, we illustrate a method to generate infinitely many diophantine equations whose solutions can be completely described by linear recurrences. In particular, we provide an integer-coefficient polynomial $p(x, y, z)$ whose only integer roots are consecutive triples of Tribonacci numbers.

Abstract:It is conjectured that for any fixed relatively prime positive integers $a,b$ and $c$ all greater than 1 there is at most one solution to the equation $a^x+b^y=c^z$ in positive integers $x,y$ and $z$, except for specific cases. We develop the methods in our previous work which rely on a variety from Baker's theory and thoroughly study the conjecture for cases where $c$ is small relative to $a$ or $b$. Using restrictions derived under which there is more than one solution to the equation, we obtain a number of finiteness results on the conjecture, which in particular enables us to find some new values of $c$ being presumably infinitely many such that for each such $c$ the conjecture holds true except for only finitely many pairs of $a$ and $b$. Most importantly we prove that if $c=13$ then the equation has at most one solution, except for $(a,b)=(3,10)$ or $(10,3)$ which exactly gives two solutions. Further our study with the help of Schmidt Subspace Theorem among others brings strong contributions to the study of Pillai's type Diophantine equations, which includes a general and satisfactory result on a well-known conjecture of M. Bennett on the equation $a^x-b^y=c$ for any fixed positive integers $a,b$ and $c$ with both $a$ and $b$ greater than 1. Some conditional results are presented under the $abc$-conjecture as well.

Abstract:In this paper we examine the diophantine equation $x^k-y^k=x-y$ where $k$ is a positive integer $\geq 2$, and consider its applications. While the complete solution of the equation $x^k-y^k=x-y$ in positive rational numbers is already known when $k=2$ or $3$, till now only one numerical solution of the equation in positive rational numbers has been published when $k=4$, and no nontrivial solution is known when $k \geq 5$. We describe a method of generating infinitely many positive rational solutions of the equation when $k=4$. We use the positive rational solutions of the equation with $k=2,\, 3$ or 4 to produce numerical curios involving square roots, cube roots and fourth roots, and as another application of these solutions, we show how to construct examples of geometric series with an interesting property.

Abstract:This is the second in a series of papers where we combine the classical approach to exponential Diophantine equations (linear forms in logarithms, Thue equations, etc.) with a modular approach based on some of the ideas of the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. In this paper we use a general and powerful new lower bound for linear forms in three logarithms, together with a combination of classical, elementary and substantially improved modular methods to solve completely the Lebesgue–Nagell equation x2 + D = yn, x, y integers, $n\geq 3$, for D in the range $1 \leq D \leq 100$.

An application of the Baker method to a new conjecture on exponential Diophantine equations

Abstract:Let $ n $ be a positive integer with $ n > 1 $ and let $ a, b $ be fixed coprime positive integers with $ \min\{a, b\} > 2 $. In this paper, using the Baker method, we proved that, for any $ n $, if $ a > \max\{15064b, b^{3/2}\} $, then the equation $ (an)^x+(bn)^y = ((a+b)n)^z $ has no positive integer solutions $ (x, y, z) $ with $ x > z > y $. Further, let $ A, B $ be coprime positive integers with $ \min\{A, B\} > 1 $ and $ 2|B $. Combining the above conclusion with some existing results, we deduced that, for any $ n $, if $ (a, b) = (A^2, B^2), A > \max\{123B, B^{3/2}\} $ and $ B\equiv 2\pmod 4 $, then this equation has only the positive integer solution $ (x, y, z) = (1, 1, 1). $ Thus, we proved that the conjecture proposed by Yuan and Han is true for this case.

Abstract:In this article, we show that the quartic Diophantine equations $x^4 \pm pqy^4=\pm z^2$ and $ x^4 \pm pq y^4= \pm iz^2$ have only trivial solutions for some primes $p$ and $q$ satisfying conditions $ p \equiv 3 \pmod 8, ~ q \equiv 1 \pmod 8 ~\text{and}~ \displaystyle\legendre{p}{q} = -1$. Here we have found the torsion of the two families of elliptic curves to find the solutions of given Diophantine equations. Moreover, we also calculate the rank of these two families of elliptic curves over the Gaussian field $\mathbb{Q}(i)$.

Abstract:For any fixed relatively prime positive integers $a,b$ and $c$ greater than 1, we consider the equation $a^x+b^y=c^z$ in positive integers $x,y$ and $z$. In this note, assuming the truth of $abc$-conjecture, for any fixed $c$ we prove that there is at most one solution to the equation, except for only finitely many pairs of $a$ and $b$.
