Abstract:Let $f\in {\mathbb {Q}}[X]$ be a polynomial without multiple roots and $deg(f)\ge 2$. We consider the Diophantine equation $f(x)f(y)=f(z^2)$. For two classes of irreducible quadratic polynomials, this equation has infinitely many nontrivial integer solutions, if the corresponding Pell’s equations satisfy a condition. For a special cubic polynomial, it has a one-parameter family of rational solutions. For $f(X)=X(X^2+X+k)$ and $X(X^2+kX+1)$ there are infinitely many $k \in {\mathbb {Q}}$ such that the title equation has rational solutions.

Abstract: In this paper, we consider some hybrid Diophantine equations of addition and multiplication. We first improve a result on new Hilbert-Waring problem. Then we consider the equation \begin{equation} \begin{cases} A+B=C ABC=D^n \end{cases} \end{equation} where $A,B,C,D,n \in\ZZ_{+}$ and $n\geq3$, which may be regarded as a generalization of Fermat's equation $x^n+y^n=z^n$. When $\gcd(A,B,C)=1$, $(1)$ is equivalent to Fermat's equation, which means it has no positive integer solutions. We discuss several cases for $\gcd(A,B,C)=p^k$ where $p$ is an odd prime. In particular, for $k=1$ we prove that $(1)$ has no nonzero integer solutions when $n=3$ and we conjecture that it is also true for any prime $n>3$. Finally, we consider equation $(1)$ in quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{t})$ for $n=3$.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.

Geometric Aspects to Diophantine Equations of the Form $x^2 + zxy + y^2 = M$ and $z$-Rings

Abstract:In the following we consider Diophantine equations of the form $x^2+ zxy + y^2 = M$ for given $M,z \in \mathbb{Z}$ and discuss the number of its (primitive) solutions as well as the construction of them. To reach this goal we introduce $z$-rings which turn out to be a useful tool to investigate these Diophantine equations. Moreover, we will extend these rings and study the algebraic curves defined by them on a plane by methods inspired by the complex plane. Then we define the so called subbranches which are bounded and connected parts of the algebraic curves containing a representative of each solution of the Diophantine equations with respect to association in $z$-rings. With the help of them we can easily prove the existence or non-existence of solutions to the above Diophantine equations. Then we divide the integer primes with respect to the different $z$-rings into two main categories, i.e. the regular and irregular elements. We show that the irregular elements are prime in the corresponding $z$-rings and we identify that most of the $z$-rings cannot be unique factorization domains. We determine the number of positive, primitive solutions of the above Diophantine equation if $M \in \mathbb{N}$ is a product of irregular elements in the corresponding $z$-ring for $z \in \mathbb{N}$. We also give an overview how many primitive and non-primitive solutions in a given quadrant we can find for arbitrary $M,z \in \mathbb{Z}$, especially, if $M$ is a power of any irregular element. Furthermore, we consider the case $z = 3$, determine the regular and irregular elements as well as the number of positive, primitive solutions of the Diophantine equation $x^2 + 3xy + y^2 = M$ depending on $M \in \mathbb{N}$.

Abstract:In 1956, Je$\acute{s}$manowicz conjectured that, for positive integers $m$ and $n$ with $m>n, \, \gcd(m,\, n)=1$ and $m\not\equiv n\pmod{2}$, the exponential Diophantine equation $(m^2-n^2)^x+(2mn)^y=(m^2+n^2)^z$ has only the positive integer solution $(x,\,y,\, z)=(2,\,2,\,2)$. Recently, Ma and Chen \cite{MC17} proved the conjecture if $4\not|mn$ and $y\ge2$. In this paper, we present an elementary proof of the result of Ma and Chen \cite{MC17}.

Abstract:Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an integer solution of the diophantine equation $m/n=1/x(\lambda)+1/y(\lambda)+1/z(\lambda)$ with $n=b+a\lambda$ are explicitly given for a,b coprime and a not a multiple of m . The solution has the form $x(\lambda)=kn(\lambda)$, $y(\lambda)=n(\lambda)(s+r\lambda)$, $z(\lambda)=(kl/r)(s+r\lambda)$ where parameters $k,l,s,r\in \mathbb{Z}$ obey certain conditions depending on $a,b$. The conditions imply restrictions for some choices of $a,b$ which differ from the ones known in the case $m=4$. E.g., the modulus must be of the form $l(mk-1)$. One can also deduce that primes of the form $1+4K$ are excluded as modulus. Also if $a=p\ne m$ is prime and $b=a+1$, i.e., $n\equiv 1{\rm mod}\, p$, polynomial solutions are shown to be impossible. All results are valid for integers $m \ge 4$.

A Variety of Euler's Conjecture

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler's conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system n=a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1, a_1a_2⋯ a_s-1(a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1)=b^s has solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+,i=1,2,…,s-1,s≥ 3. By using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ for s=3, but for s=4 it has infinitely many solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ and for s≥ 5 there are infinitely many polynomial solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ[t_1,t_2,…,t_s-3] with positive value satisfying this Diophantine system.

Abstract:We consider the number of solutions in positive integers $(x,y,z)$ for the purely exponential Diophantine equation $a^x+b^y =c^z$ (with $\gcd(a,b)=1$). Apart from a list of known exceptions, a conjecture published in 2016 claims that this equation has at most one solution in positive integers $x$, $y$, and $z$. We show that this is true for some ranges of $a$, $b$, $c$, for instance, when $1 < a,b < 3600$ and $c<10^{10}$. The conjecture also holds for small pairs $(a,b)$ independent of $c$, where $2 \le a,b \le 10$ with $\gcd(a,b)=1$. We show that the Pillai equation $a^x - b^y = r > 0$ has at most one solution (with a known list of exceptions) when $2 \le a,b \le 3600$. Finally, the primitive case of the Jeśmanowicz conjecture holds when $a \le 10^6$ or when $b \le 10^6$. This work highlights the power of some ideas of Miyazaki and Pink and the usefulness of a theorem by Scott.

Abstract:Let q < p be two primes. We study the exponential Diophantine equations p(m) - p(n) = q(s) - q(t) where m, n, s, t are positive integers. In this paper, we prove that the equation 3(m) - 3(n) = 2(s) - 2(t) with m > n has only three solutions (m, n, s, t) = (2, 1, 3, 1), (3, 1, 5, 3) and (5, 1, 8, 4); the equation 5(m) - 5(n) = 2(s) - 2(t) has only one solution (3, 1, 7, 3) and the equation 13(m) - 13(n) = 3(s) - 3(t) has only one solution (3, 1, 7, 1).

Abstract:In this paper we find non-negative integer solutions for exponential Diophantine equations of the type $p \cdot 3^x+ p^y=z^2,$ where $p$ is a prime number. We prove that such equation has a unique solution $\displaystyle{(x,y,z)=\left(\log_3(p-2), 0, p-1\right)}$ if $2 \neq p \equiv 2 \pmod 3$ and $(x,y,z)=(0,1,2)$ if $p=2$. We also display the infinite solution set of that equation in the case $p=3$. Finally, a brief discussion of the case $p \equiv 1 \pmod 3$ is made, where we display an equation that does not have a non-negative integer solution and leave some open questions. The proofs are based on the use of the properties of the modular arithmetic.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the equations involving Euler's totient function $\phi$ and Lucas type sequences. In particular, we prove that the equation $\phi (x^m-y^m)=x^n-y^n$ has no solutions in positive integers $x, y, m, n$ except for the trivial solutions $(x, y, m , n)=(a+1, a, 1, 1)$, where $a$ is a positive integer, and the equation $\phi ((x^m-y^m)/(x-y))=(x^n-y^n)/(x-y)$ has no solutions in positive integers $x, y, m, n$ except for the trivial solutions $(x, y, m , n)=(a, b, 1, 1)$, where $a, b$ are integers with $a>b\ge 1$.

Abstract:In 1997 K. Ono and K. Soundararajan [Invent. Math. 130(1997)] proved that under the generalized Riemann hypothesis any positive odd integer greater than 2719 can be represented by the famous Ramanujan form x(2) + y(2) + 10z(2); equivalently the form 2x(2) + 5y(2) + 4T(z) represents all integers greater than 1359, where T(z) denotes the triangular number z(z + 1)/2. Given positive integers a, b, c we employ modular forms and the theory of quadratic forms to determine completely when the general form ax(2) + by(2) + cT(z) represents sufficiently large integers and to establish similar results for the forms ax(2) + bT(y) + cT(z) and aT(x) + bT(y) + cT(z). Here are some consequences of our main theorems: (i) All sufficiently large odd numbers have the form 2ax(2) + y(2) + z(2) if and only if all prime divisors of a are congruent to 1 modulo (ii) The form ax(2) + y(2) + T(z) is almost universal (i.e., it represents sufficiently large integers) if and only if each odd prime divisor of a is congruent to 1 or 3 modulo 8. (iii) ax(2) + T(y) + T(z) is almost universal if and only if all odd prime divisors of a are congruent to 1 modulo 4. (iv) When v(2)(a) not equal 3, the form aT(x) + T(y) + T(z) is almost universal if and only if all odd prime divisors of a are congruent to 1 modulo 4 and v(2)(a) not equal 5, 7,..., where v(2)(a) is the 2-adic order of a.

Abstract:The subject matter of this work are the two equations: x^4+y^4+z^4-2(x^2)(y^2)-2(y^2)(z^2)-2(z^2)(x^2)= n (1) And x^2+y^4+z^4-2x(y^2)-2x(z^2)-2(y^4)(z^4)= n (2) where n is a natural number. Contest Corner problem CC24, published in the May2012 issue of the journal Crux Mathematicorum(see reference[1]); provided the motivation behind this work. In Th.1, we show that eq.(1) if n=8N, N odd; then eq.(1) has no integer solutions; which generalizes problem CC24(the case n=24). We use Th.2, to find some rational solutions of eq.(1); which answers the second question in CC24. In Th.4, we show that if n= p, 4, or pq; where p and q are distinct primes. Then eq.(1)has no integer solutions. In Th.6, we determine all the integer solutions to (1), when n=p^2, p an odd prime. Theorems 7 through13, deal with equation (2). In Th.11, we determine all the integer solutions of eq.(2). Th.12 states that (2) has no integer solutions in n is congruent to 2 or 3 modulo4. Finally, in Th.13 we determine all the rational solutions of eq.(2).
