Abstract:The near-unanimity-closed minions of Boolean functions, i.e., the clonoids whose target algebra contains a near-unanimity function, are completely described. The key concept towards this result is the minorant-minor partial order and its order ideals.

Abstract:We describe the ordering of a class of clones by minion homomorphisms, also known as minor preserving maps or height 1 clone homomorphisms. The class consists of all clones on finite sets determined by binary relations whose projections to both coordinates have at most two elements. This class can be alternatively described up to minion homomorphisms as the class of multisorted Boolean clones determined by binary relations. We also introduce and apply the concept of a minion core which provides canonical representatives for equivalence classes of clones, more generally minions, on finite sets.

Abstract:Extending Sparks's theorem, we determine the cardinality of the lattice of $(C_1,C_2)$-clonoids of Boolean functions for certain pairs $(C_1,C_2)$ of clones of essentially unary, linear, or $0$- or $1$-separating functions or semilattice operations. When such a $(C_1,C_2)$-clonoid lattice is uncountable, the proof is in most cases based on exhibiting a countably infinite family of functions with the property that distinct subsets thereof always generate distinct $(C_1,C_2)$-clonoids. In the cases when the lattice is finite, we enumerate the corresponding $(C_1,C_2)$-clonoids. We also provide a summary of the known results on cardinalities of $(C_1,C_2)$-clonoid lattices of Boolean functions.

Clones of Borel Boolean Functions

Abstract:We study the lattice of all Borel clones on $2 = \{0,1\}$: classes of Borel functions $f : 2^n \to 2$, $n \le \omega$, which are closed under composition and include all projections. This is a natural extension to countable arities of Post's 1941 classification of all clones of finitary Boolean functions. Every Borel clone restricts to a finitary clone, yielding a "projection" from the lattice of all Borel clones to Post's lattice. It is well-known that each finitary clone of affine mod 2 functions admits a unique extension to a Borel clone. We show that over each finitary clone containing either both $\wedge, \vee$, or the 2-out-of-3 median operation, there lie at least 2 but only finitely many Borel clones. Over the remaining clones in Post's lattice, we give only a partial classification of the Borel extensions, and present some evidence that the full structure may be quite complicated.

Abstract:Clonoids are sets of finitary functions from an algebra $\mathbb{A}$ to an algebra $\mathbb{B}$ that are closed under composition with term functions of $\mathbb{A}$ on the domain side and with term functions of $\mathbb{B}$ on the codomain side. For $\mathbb{A},\mathbb{B}$ (polynomially equivalent to) finite modules we show: If $\mathbb{A},\mathbb{B}$ have coprime order and the congruence lattice of $\mathbb{A}$ is distributive, then there are only finitely many clonoids from $\mathbb{A}$ to $\mathbb{B}$. This is proved by establishing for every natural number $k$ a particular linear equation that all $k$-ary functions from $\mathbb{A}$ to $\mathbb{B}$ satisfy. Else if $\mathbb{A},\mathbb{B}$ do not have coprime order, then there exist infinite ascending chains of clonoids from $\mathbb{A}$ to $\mathbb{B}$ ordered by inclusion. Consequently any extension of $\mathbb{A}$ by $\mathbb{B}$ has countably infinitely many $2$-nilpotent expansions up to term equivalence.

Abstract:Extending Sparks's theorem, we determine the cardinality of the lattice of $(C_1,C_2)$-clonoids of Boolean functions in the cases where the target clone $C_2$ is the clone of projections. Moreover, we explicitly describe the $(C_1,C_2)$-clonoids of Boolean functions in the cases where the source clone $C_1$ is one of the four clones of monotone functions or contains the discriminator function.

Abstract:A clonoid is a set of finitary functions from a set $A$ to a set $B$ that is closed under taking minors. Hence clonoids are generalizations of clones. By a classical result of Post, there are only countably many clones on a 2-element set. In contrast to that, we present continuum many clonoids for $A = B = \{0,1\}$. More generally, for any finite set $A$ and any $2$-element algebra $\mathbf{B}$, we give the cardinality of the set of clonoids from $A$ to $\mathbf{B}$ that are closed under the operations of $\mathbf{B}$.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new axiomatic system that is a minimal axiomatization of Boolean algebras. Furthermore, the symmetric difference is shown to be algebraically analogous to the modular difference of two numbers. Finally, a new method to prove equivalent relations in a Boolean algebra is also given.

Abstract:We study clones modulo minor homomorphisms, which are mappings from one clone to another preserving arities of operations and respecting permutation and identification of variables. Minor-equivalent clones satisfy the same sets of identities of the form , also known as minor identities, and therefore share many algebraic properties. Moreover, it was proved that the complexity of the of a finite structure only depends on the set of minor identities satisfied by the polymorphism clone of . In this article we consider the poset that arises by considering all clones over a three-element set with the following order: we write if there exists a minor homomorphism from to . We show that the aforementioned poset has only three submaximal elements.

Abstract:We consider Boolean functions f:{-1,1}^n->{-1,1} that are close to a sum of independent functions on mutually exclusive subsets of the variables. We prove that any such function is close to just a single function on a single subset. We also consider Boolean functions f:R^n->{-1,1} that are close, with respect to any product distribution over R^n, to a sum of their variables. We prove that any such function is close to one of the variables. Both our results are independent of the number of variables, but depend on the variance of f. I.e., if f is \epsilon*Var(f)-close to a sum of independent functions or random variables, then it is O(\epsilon)-close to one of the independent functions or random variables, respectively. We prove that this dependence on Var(f) is tight. Our results are a generalization of the Friedgut-Kalai-Naor Theorem [FKN'02], which holds for functions f:{-1,1}^n->{-1,1} that are close to a linear combination of uniformly distributed Boolean variables.

Abstract:Clones of operations of arity (referred to as -operations) have been employed by Neumann to represent varieties of infinitary algebras defined by operations of at most arity . More recently, clone algebras have been introduced to study clones of functions, including -operations, within the framework of one-sorted universal algebra. Additionally, polymorphisms of arity , which are -operations preserving the relations of a given first-order structure, have recently been used to establish model theory results with applications in the field of complexity of CSP problems. In this paper, we undertake a topological and algebraic study of polymorphisms of arity and their corresponding invariant relations. Given a Boolean ideal X on the set , we endow the set of -operations on A with a topology, which we refer to as X -topology. Notably, the topology of pointwise convergence can be retrieved as a special case of this approach. Polymorphisms and invariant relations are then defined parametrically with respect to the X -topology. We characterise the X -closed clones of -operations in terms of - and present a method to relate - to the classical (finitary) - .

Minor-closed classes of binary functions

Abstract:Binary functions are a generalisation of the cocircuit spaces of binary matroids to arbitrary functions. Every rank function is assigned a binary function, and the deletion and contraction operations of binary functions generalise matroid deletion and contraction. We give the excluded minor characterisations for the classes of binary functions with well defined minors, and those with an associated rank function. Within these classes, we also characterise the classes of binary functions corresponding to polymatroids, matroids and binary matroids by their excluded minors. This gives a new proof of Tutte's excluded minor characterisation of binary matroids in the more generalised space of binary functions.

Abstract:A nearest neighbor representation of a Boolean function $f$ is a set of vectors (anchors) labeled by $0$ or $1$ such that $f(\vec{x}) = 1$ if and only if the closest anchor to $\vec{x}$ is labeled by $1$. This model was introduced by Hajnal, Liu, and Turán (2022), who studied bounds on the number of anchors required to represent Boolean functions under different choices of anchors (real vs. Boolean vectors) as well as the more expressive model of $k$-nearest neighbors.

Abstract:To a submodular function we define a class of preorders, conforming preorders. A submodular function $z$ corresponds to a generalized permutahedron $\Pi(z)$. We show the faces of $\Pi(z)$ are in bijection with the conforming preorders. The face poset structure of $\Pi(z)$ induces two order relations $\lhd$ and $\blacktriangleleft$ on conforming preorder, and we investigate their properties. Ardila and Aguiar introduced a Hopf monoid of submodular functions/generalized permutahedra. We show there is a cointeracting bimonoid of modular functions. By recent theory of L.Foissy this associates a canonical polynomial to any submodular function.

Quantifiers closed under partial polymorphisms

Abstract:We study Lindstrom quantifiers that satisfy certain closure properties which are motivated by the study of polymorphisms in the context of constraint satisfaction problems (CSP). When the algebra of polymorphisms of a finite structure B satisfies certain equations, this gives rise to a natural closure condition on the class of structures that map homomorphically to B. The collection of quantifiers that satisfy closure conditions arising from a fixed set of equations are rather more general than those arising as CSP. For any such conditions P, we define a pebble game that delimits the distinguishing power of the infinitary logic with all quantifiers that are P-closed. We use the pebble game to show that the problem of deciding whether a system of linear equations is solvable in Z2 is not expressible in the infinitary logic with all quantifiers closed under a near-unanimity condition.

Abstract:We develop a new general framework for algebras and clones, called Universal Clone Algebra. Algebras and clones of finitary operations are to Universal Algebra what t-algebras and clone algebras are to Universal Clone Algebra. Clone algebras have been recently introduced to found a one-sorted, purely algebraic theory of clones, while t-algebras are first introduced in this article. We present a method to codify algebras and clones into t-algebras and clone algebras, respectively. We provide concrete examples showing that general results in Universal Clone Algebra, when translated in terms of algebras and clones, give more powerful versions of known theorems in Universal Algebra. We apply this methodology to Birkhoff's HSP theorem and to the recent topological versions of Birkhoff's theorem.

Abstract:A trivial automorphism of the Boolean algebra $\mathcal P(\mathbb N) / \mathrm{Fin}$ is an automorphism induced by the action of some function $\mathbb N \rightarrow \mathbb N$. In models of forcing axioms all automorphisms are trivial, and therefore two trivial automorphisms are conjugate if and only if they have the same (modulo finite) cycle structure. We show that the Continuum Hypothesis implies that two trivial automorphisms are conjugate if and only if there are neither first-order obstructions nor index obstructions for their conjugacy. This is equivalent to given trivial automorphisms being conugate in some forcing extension of the universe. To each automorphism $\alpha$ of $\mathcal P(\mathbb N) / \mathrm{Fin}$ we associate the first-order structure $\mathfrak{A}_\alpha=(\mathcal P(\mathbb N) / \mathrm{Fin},\alpha)$ and compute the existential theories of these structures. These results are applied to resolve a question of Braga, Farah, and Vignati and prove that there are coarse metric spaces $X$ and $Y$ such that the isomorphism between their uniform Roe coronas is independent from $\mathsf{ZFC}$.

Abstract:It is known that a (concept) lattice contains an n-dimensional Boolean suborder if and only if the context contains an n-dimensional contra-nominal scale as subcontext. In this work, we investigate more closely the interplay between the Boolean subcontexts of a given finite context and the Boolean suborders of its concept lattice. To this end, we define mappings from the set of subcontexts of a context to the set of suborders of its concept lattice and vice versa and study their structural properties. In addition, we introduce closed-subcontexts as an extension of closed relations to investigate the set of all sublattices of a given lattice.
