Abstract:We study clones modulo minor homomorphisms, which are mappings from one clone to another preserving arities of operations and respecting permutation and identification of variables. Minor-equivalent clones satisfy the same sets of identities of the form , also known as minor identities, and therefore share many algebraic properties. Moreover, it was proved that the complexity of the of a finite structure only depends on the set of minor identities satisfied by the polymorphism clone of . In this article we consider the poset that arises by considering all clones over a three-element set with the following order: we write if there exists a minor homomorphism from to . We show that the aforementioned poset has only three submaximal elements.

Abstract:Characterizations of "almost associative" binary operations generating a minimal clone are given for two interpretations of the term "almost associative". One of them uses the associative spectrum, the other one uses the index of nonassociativity to measure how far an operation is from being associative.

Abstract:Let A be a finite non-singleton set. For |A|=2 we show that the partial clone consisting of all selfdual monotone partial functions on A is not finitely generated, while it is the intersection of two finitely generated maximal partial clones on A. Moreover for |A| >= 3 we show that there are pairs of finitely generated maximal partial clones whose intersection is a non-finitely generated partial clone on A.

Multisorted Boolean Clones Determined by Binary Relations up to Minion Homomorphisms

Abstract:We describe the ordering of a class of clones by minion homomorphisms, also known as minor preserving maps or height 1 clone homomorphisms. The class consists of all clones on finite sets determined by binary relations whose projections to both coordinates have at most two elements. This class can be alternatively described up to minion homomorphisms as the class of multisorted Boolean clones determined by binary relations. We also introduce and apply the concept of a minion core which provides canonical representatives for equivalence classes of clones, more generally minions, on finite sets.

Abstract:We study the minimal input sets which can determine completely the universal and the phase-covariant quantum cloning machines. We find that the universal quantum cloning machine, which can copy arbitrary input qubit equally well, however can be determined completely by only four input states located at the four vertices of a tetrahedron. The phase-covariant quantum cloning machine, which can copy all qubits located on the equator of the Bloch sphere, can be determined by three equatorial qubits with equal angular distance. These results sharpen further the well-known results that BB84 states and six-states used in quantum cryptography can determine completely the phase-covariant and universal quantum cloning machines. This concludes the study of the power of universal and phase-covariant quantum cloning, i.e., from minimal input sets necessarily to full input sets by definition. This can simplify dramatically the testing of whether the quantum clone machines are successful or not, we only need to check that the minimal input sets can be cloned optimally.

Post, but for at least three-element basic set the full structure of the lattice is still unknown, and the complete description in general is considered to be hopeless. In this paper we study k -ary parts of maximal clones, for building on the already known results for their unary parts. Permutation clones that preserve relations

Abstract:Permutation clones generalise permutation groups and clone theory. We investigate permutation clones defined by relations, or equivalently, the automorphism groups of powers of relations. We find many structural results on the lattice of all relationally defined permutation clones on a finite set. We find all relationally defined permutation clones on two element set. We show that all maximal borrow closed permutation clones are either relationally defined or cancellatively defined. Permutation clones generalise clones to permutations of $A^n$. Emil Jeřábek found the dual structure to be weight mappings $A^k\rightarrow M$ to a commutative monoid, generalising relations. We investigate the case when the dual object is precisely a relation, equivalently, that $M={\mathbb B}$, calling these relationally defined permutation clones. We determine the number of relationally defined permutation clones on two elements (13). We note that many infinite classes of clones collapse when looked at as permutation clones.

Abstract:We give a proof of I. G. Rosenberg's characterization of maximal clones. The theorem lists six types of relations on a finite set such that a clone over this set is maximal if and only if it contains just the functions preserving one of the relations of the list. In Universal Algebra, this translates immediately into a characterization of the finite preprimal algebras: A finite algebra is preprimal if and only if its term operations are exactly the functions preserving a relation of one of the six types listed in the theorem. The difficult part of the proof is to show that all maximal clones or preprimal algebras respectively are of that form. This follows from, and, as we also demonstrate, is indeed equivalent to, a characterization of primal algebras: We show that the primal algebras are exactly those whose term operations do not preserve any of the relations on the list.

These results sharpen further the well-known results that Bennett-Brassard 1984 protocol (BB84) states and six states used in quantum cryptography can determine completely the phase-covariant and universal quantum cloning machines. This can simplify the testing procedure of whether the quantum clone machines are successful or not; namely, we only need to check that the minimal input sets can be cloned optimally, which can ensure that the quantum clone machines can work well for all input states.

Abstract:Extending Sparks's theorem, we determine the cardinality of the lattice of $(C_1,C_2)$-clonoids of Boolean functions in the cases where the target clone $C_2$ is the clone of projections. Moreover, we explicitly describe the $(C_1,C_2)$-clonoids of Boolean functions in the cases where the source clone $C_1$ is one of the four clones of monotone functions or contains the discriminator function.

Abstract:No-cloning theorem says that there is no unitary operation that makes perfect clones of non-orthogonal quantum states. The objective of the present paper is to examine whether an imperfect cloning operation exists or not in a C*-algebraic framework. We define a universal $\epsilon$-imperfect cloning operation which tolerates a finite loss $\epsilon$ of fidelity in the cloned state, and show that an individual system's algebra of observables is Abelian if and only if there is a universal $\epsilon$-imperfect cloning operation in the case where the loss of fidelity is less than 1/4. Therefore, in this case no universal $\epsilon$-imperfect cloning operation is possible in algebraic quantum theory.

Abstract:We develop a new general framework for algebras and clones, called Universal Clone Algebra. Algebras and clones of finitary operations are to Universal Algebra what t-algebras and clone algebras are to Universal Clone Algebra. Clone algebras have been recently introduced to found a one-sorted, purely algebraic theory of clones, while t-algebras are first introduced in this article. We present a method to codify algebras and clones into t-algebras and clone algebras, respectively. We provide concrete examples showing that general results in Universal Clone Algebra, when translated in terms of algebras and clones, give more powerful versions of known theorems in Universal Algebra. We apply this methodology to Birkhoff's HSP theorem and to the recent topological versions of Birkhoff's theorem.

Minimal operations over permutation groups

Abstract:We classify the possible types of minimal operations above an arbitrary permutation group. Above the trivial group, a theorem of Rosenberg yields that there are five types of minimal operations. We show that above any non-trivial permutation group there are at most four such types. Indeed, except above Boolean groups acting freely on a set, there are only three. In particular, this is the case for oligomorphic permutation groups, for which we improve a result of Bodirsky and Chen by showing one of the types in their classification does not exist. Building on these results, we answer three questions of Bodirsky that were previously open.

Abstract:Extending Sparks's theorem, we determine the cardinality of the lattice of $(C_1,C_2)$-clonoids of Boolean functions for certain pairs $(C_1,C_2)$ of clones of essentially unary, linear, or $0$- or $1$-separating functions or semilattice operations. When such a $(C_1,C_2)$-clonoid lattice is uncountable, the proof is in most cases based on exhibiting a countably infinite family of functions with the property that distinct subsets thereof always generate distinct $(C_1,C_2)$-clonoids. In the cases when the lattice is finite, we enumerate the corresponding $(C_1,C_2)$-clonoids. We also provide a summary of the known results on cardinalities of $(C_1,C_2)$-clonoid lattices of Boolean functions.

Abstract:Cloning of statistics of general quantum measurement is discussed. The presented approach is connected with the known concept of observable cloning, but differs in some essential respects. The reasons are illustrated within some variety of the B92 protocol. As it is shown, there exist pairs of states such that the perfect cloning of given POVM is not possible. We discuss some properties of these intolerant sets. An example allowing the perfect cloning is presented as well.

Abstract:We show that any clone over a finite domain that has a quasi Maltsev operation and fully symmetric operations of all arities has an incoming minion homomorphism from I, the clone of all idempotent operations on a two element set. We use this result to show that in the pp-constructability poset the lower covers of the structure with all relations that are invariant under I are the transitive tournament on three vertices and structures in one-to-one correspondence with all finite simple groups.
