Abstract:In this paper we compute the minimum degree of a faithful representation by partial transformations of a finite semigroup admitting a faithful completely reducible matrix representation over the field of complex numbers. This includes all inverse semigroups, and hence our results generalize earlier results of Easdown and Schein on the minimal faithful degree of an inverse semigroup. It also includes well-studied monoids like full matrix monoids over finite fields and the monoid of binary relations (i.e., matrices over the Boolean semiring). Our answer reduces the computation to considerations of permutation representations of maximal subgroups that are faithful when restricted to distinguished normal subgroups. This is analogous to (and inspired by) recent results of the second author on the minimal number of irreducible constituents in a faithful completely reducible complex matrix representation of a finite semigroup that admits one. To illustrate what happens when a finite semigroup does not admit a faithful completely reducible representation, we compute the minimum faithful degree of the opposite monoid of the full transformation monoid.

The minimal automorphic representation $\Pi$ of $G(\mathbb A)$ admits a realization on a space of functions $\mathcal S(X(\mathbb A))$ for a variety $X$. In this paper we write explicitly an automorphic, i.e. $G(F)$-invariant, functional on $\mathcal S(X(\mathbb A)).$

Abstract:A natural question for groups $H$ is which data can be detected in its finite quotients. A subset $X \subset H$ is called separable if for all $h\in H \setminus X$, there exists an epimorphism $\varphi$ to a finite group $Q$ such that $\varphi(h)\notin\varphi(X)$. More specifically, a group is said to be conjugacy separable if every conjugacy class is separable. It is known that many classes of groups are conjugacy separable, including virtually free and polycyclic groups. The minimal order of the quotient $Q$, in terms of the complexity of the conjugacy classes under consideration, is captured by the conjugacy separability function $\mathrm{Conj}_H: \mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}$. This function is in general ill understood, in fact the only large class of groups for which it is known exactly are the abelian groups. Indeed, in this case $\mathrm{Conj}_H$ is equal to the residual finiteness function, that is the size of quotients needed to separate singletons, and thus logarithmic if the group is infinite. Recent work has described the residual finiteness function for the class of virtually abelian groups, which gives a lower bound for the conjugacy separability function. The main result of this paper is a characterization of $\mathrm{Conj}_H$ for every virtually abelian group $H$. If the corresponding extension is associated with an irreducible representation over $\mathbb{Q}$, we demonstrate that we obtain the same function as the residual finiteness function. However, if the representation is not irreducible, we find an expression that is in some cases strictly larger, which we illustrate with several examples.

Abstract:The notion of minimal complements was introduced by Nathanson in 2011. Since then, the existence or the inexistence of minimal complements of sets have been extensively studied. Recently, the study of inverse problems, i.e., which sets can or cannot occur as minimal complements has gained traction. For example, the works of Kwon, Alon--Kravitz--Larson, Burcroff--Luntzlara and also that of the authors, shed light on some of the questions in this direction. These works have focussed mainly on the group of integers, or on abelian groups. In this work, our motivation is two-fold: (i) to show some new results on the inverse problem, (ii) to concentrate on the inverse problem in not necessarily abelian groups. As a by-product, we obtain new results on non-minimal complements in the group of integers and more generally, in any finitely generated abelian group of positive rank and in any free abelian group of positive rank. Moreover, we show the existence of uncountably many subsets in such groups which are "robust" non-minimal complements.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider endomorphisms of an undirected cycle graph from Semigroup Theory perspective. Our main aim is to present a process to determine sets of generators with minimal cardinality for the monoids wEnd C n and End C n of all weak endomorphisms and all endomorphisms of an undirected cycle graph C n with n vertices. We also describe Green's relations and regularity of these monoids and calculate their cardinalities.

Abstract:Every simple Hermitian Lie group has a unique family of spherical representations induced from a maximal parabolic subgroup whose unipotent radical is a Heisenberg group. For most Hermitian groups, this family contains a complementary series, and at its endpoint sits a proper unitarizable subrepresentation. We show that this subrepresentation is next-to-minimal in the sense that its associated variety is a next-to-minimal nilpotent coadjoint orbit. Moreover, for the Hermitian groups $\operatorname{SO}_0(2,n)$ and $E_{6(-14)}$ we study some branching problems of these next-to-minimal representations.

Short proofs of ideal membership

Abstract:A cofactor representation of an ideal element, that is, a representation in terms of the generators, can be considered as a certificate for ideal membership. Such a representation is typically not unique, and some can be a lot more complicated than others. In this work, we consider the problem of computing sparsest cofactor representations, i.e., representations with a minimal number of terms, of a given element in a polynomial ideal. While we focus on the more general case of noncommutative polynomials, all results also apply to the commutative setting. We show that the problem of computing cofactor representations with a bounded number of terms is decidable and NP-complete. Moreover, we provide a practical algorithm for computing sparse (not necessarily optimal) representations by translating the problem into a linear optimization problem and by exploiting properties of signature-based Gröbner basis algorithms. We show that for a certain class of ideals, representations computed by this method are actually optimal, and we present experimental data illustrating that it can lead to noticeably sparser cofactor representations.

Abstract:We show that if $H \leq G$ is a closed amenable and cocompact subgroup of a unimodular locally compact group, then the reduced group C*-algebra of $G$ is not simple. Equivalently, there are unitary representations of $G$ that are weakly contained in the left-regular representation, but not weakly equivalent to it. We discuss applications of this result and pose the problem to construct non-discrete topologically simple groups with a cocompact amenable closed subgroup but without a Gelfand pair.

Abstract:We classify the possible types of minimal operations above an arbitrary permutation group. Above the trivial group, a theorem of Rosenberg yields that there are five types of minimal operations. We show that above any non-trivial permutation group there are at most four such types. Indeed, except above Boolean groups acting freely on a set, there are only three. In particular, this is the case for oligomorphic permutation groups, for which we improve a result of Bodirsky and Chen by showing one of the types in their classification does not exist. Building on these results, we answer three questions of Bodirsky that were previously open.

Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over a number field $L$ and for a finite set $S$ of primes, let $\rho_{E,S} : {\rm Gal}(\overline{L}/L) \to {\rm GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z}_{S})$ be the $S$-adic Galois representation. If $L \cap \mathbb{Q}(\zeta_{n}) = \mathbb{Q}$ for all positive integers $n$ whose prime factors are in $S$, then $\det \rho_{E,S} : {\rm Gal}(\overline{L}/L) \to \mathbb{Z}_{S}^{\times}$ is surjective. We say that a finite index subgroup $H \subseteq {\rm GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z}_{S})$ is minimal if $\det : H \to \mathbb{Z}_{S}^{\times}$ is surjective, but $\det : K \to \mathbb{Z}_{S}^{\times}$ is not surjective for any proper closed subgroup $K$ of $H$. We show that there are no minimal subgroups of ${\rm GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z}_{S})$ unless $S = \{ 2 \}$, while minimal subgroups of ${\rm GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z}_{2})$ are plentiful. We give models for all the genus $0$ modular curves associated to minimal subgroups of ${\rm GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z}_{2})$, and construct an infinite family of elliptic curves over imaginary quadratic fields with bad reduction only at $2$ and with minimal $2$-adic image.

Minimal Faithful Quasi-Permutation Representation Degree of p-Groups with Cyclic Center

Abstract:For a finite group G, we denote by $\mu(G)$, and c(G), the minimal degree of faithful permutation representation of G, and the minimal degree of faithful representation of G by quasi-permutation matrices over the complex field C, respectively. In this article, we study $\mu(G)$, and c(G) for various classes of finite non-abelian p-groups with cyclic center. We prove a result for normally monomial p-groups with cyclic center which generalizes a result of Behravesh for finite p-groups of nilpotency class 2 with cyclic center [5, Theorem 4.12]. We also compute minimal degrees for some classes of metabelian p-groups.

Abstract:We study clones modulo minor homomorphisms, which are mappings from one clone to another preserving arities of operations and respecting permutation and identification of variables. Minor-equivalent clones satisfy the same sets of identities of the form , also known as minor identities, and therefore share many algebraic properties. Moreover, it was proved that the complexity of the of a finite structure only depends on the set of minor identities satisfied by the polymorphism clone of . In this article we consider the poset that arises by considering all clones over a three-element set with the following order: we write if there exists a minor homomorphism from to . We show that the aforementioned poset has only three submaximal elements.

Abstract:If all of the entries of a large $S_n$ character table are covered up and you are allowed to uncover one entry at a time, then how can you quickly identify all of the indexing characters and conjugacy classes? We present a fast algorithmic solution that works even when n is so large that almost none of the entries of the character table can be computed. The fraction of the character table that needs to be uncovered has exponential decay, and for many of these entries we are only interested in whether the entry is zero.

Abstract:Roman domination is one of the many variants of domination that keeps most of the complexity features of the classical domination problem. We prove that Roman domination behaves differently in two aspects: enumeration and extension. We develop non-trivial enumeration algorithms for minimal Roman dominating functions with polynomial delay and polynomial space. Recall that the existence of a similar enumeration result for minimal dominating sets is open for decades. Our result is based on a polynomial-time algorithm for Extension Roman Domination : Given a graph and a function , is there a minimal Roman dominating function with ? Here, lifts pointwise; minimality is understood in this order. Our enumeration algorithm is also analyzed from an input-sensitive viewpoint, leading to a run-time estimate of for graphs of order n ; this is complemented by a lower bound example of .
