Abstract:We decompose a nonmonotonic inference Gamma (sic) alpha into two stages: going forth to deduce all default conclusions in a logic system named DC (short for Default Conclusions), and drawing back less preferable conclusions in the face of conflicting default conclusions, based on a binary "more preferable" relation defined on those subformulas of that are also its deductive consequences. Under the possible-world semantics framework, we construct a set selection function and build up a theory of semantics, as a variant of traditional selection function semantics. We prove that the underlying logic system DC is sound and complete with respect to set selection function semantics. Using this two-layer mechanism, we account for benchmark examples including the Nixon Diamond and the Penguin Principle.

Abstract:We present constructive provability logic, an intuitionstic modal logic that validates the L\"ob rule of G\"odel and L\"ob's provability logic by permitting logical reflection over provability. Two distinct variants of this logic, CPL and CPL*, are presented in natural deduction and sequent calculus forms which are then shown to be equivalent. In addition, we discuss the use of constructive provability logic to justify stratified negation in logic programming within an intuitionstic and structural proof theory.

Abstract:In this paper we explore the design of sequent calculi operating on graphs. For this purpose, we introduce a set of logical connectives allowing us to extend the correspondence between cographs and classical propositional formulas to any graph. We then provide sequent calculi operating on these formulas, we prove cut-elimination and that formula encoding the same graph are logically equivalent. We show that these systems provide conservative extensions of multiplicative linear logic (with and without mix) and classical propositional logic. We conclude by showing that one of these systems is equivalent to the graphical logic GS defined via a system of context-free graph rewiring rules, therefore providing an alternative proof of analyticity for this logic over graphs.

Abstract:We give an analysis and generalizations of some long-established constructive completeness results in terms of categorical logic and pre-sheaf and sheaf semantics. The purpose is in no small part conceptual and organizational: from a few basic ingredients arises a more unified picture connecting constructive completeness with respect to Tarski semantics, to the extent that it is available, with various completeness theorems in terms of presheaf and sheaf semantics (and thus with Kripke and Beth semantics). From this picture are obtained both ("reverse mathematical") equivalence results and new constructive completeness theorems; in particular, the basic set-up is flexible enough to obtain strong constructive completeness results for languages of arbitrary size and languages for which equality between the elements of the signature is not decidable.

Abstract:The present paper provides an analysis of the existing proof systems for dynamic epistemic logic from the viewpoint of proof-theoretic semantics. Dynamic epistemic logic is one of the best known members of a family of logical systems which have been successfully applied to diverse scientific disciplines, but the proof theoretic treatment of which presents many difficulties. After an illustration of the proof-theoretic semantic principles most relevant to the treatment of logical connectives, we turn to illustrating the main features of display calculi, a proof-theoretic paradigm which has been successfully employed to give a proof-theoretic semantic account of modal and substructural logics. Then, we review some of the most significant proposals of proof systems for dynamic epistemic logics, and we critically reflect on them in the light of the previously introduced proof-theoretic semantic principles. The contributions of the present paper include a generalisation of Belnap's cut elimination metatheorem for display calculi, and a revised version of the display-style calculus <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://D.EAK" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. We verify that the revised version satisfies the previously mentioned proof-theoretic semantic principles, and show that it enjoys cut elimination as a consequence of the generalised metatheorem.

Abstract:In this paper we give an ordinal analysis of the theory of second order arithmetic. We do this by working with proof trees -- that is, "deductions" which may not be well-founded. Working in a suitable theory, we are able to represent functions on proof trees as yet further proof trees satisfying a suitable analog of well-foundedness. Iterating this process allows us to represent higher order functions as well: since functions on proof trees are just proof trees themselves, these functions can easily be extended to act on proof trees which are themselves understood as functions. The corresponding system of ordinals parallels this, using higher order collapsing function.

Abstract:We give a simple and direct proof that super-consistency implies the cut elimination property in deduction modulo. This proof can be seen as a simplification of the proof that super-consistency implies proof normalization. It also takes ideas from the semantic proofs of cut elimination that proceed by proving the completeness of the cut-free calculus. As an application, we compare our work with the cut elimination theorems in higher-order logic that involve V-complexes.

First, we build upon Lück's [16] ultraproduct construction for team semantics and prove a suitable version of Łoś' Theorem. Taking Bi-Intuitionistic Logic First-Order: A Proof-Theoretic Investigation via Polytree Sequents

Abstract:It is well-known that extending the Hilbert axiomatic system for first-order intuitionistic logic with an exclusion operator, that is dual to implication, collapses the domains in the model into a constant domain. This makes it a very challenging problem to find a sound and complete proof system for first-order bi-intuitionistic logic with non-constant domains, that is also conservative over first-order intuitionistic logic. We solve this problem by presenting the first sound and complete proof system for first-order bi-intuitionistic logic with increasing domains. We formalize our proof system in a labeled polytree sequent calculus (a notational variant of nested sequents), and prove that it enjoys cut-elimination and is conservative over first-order intuitionistic logic. A key feature of our calculus is an explicit eigenvariable context, which allows us to control precisely the scope of free variables in a polytree structure. Semantically this context can be seen as encoding a notion of Scott's existence predicate for intuitionistic logic. This turns out to be crucial to avoid the collapse of domains and to prove the completeness of our proof system. The explicit consideration of the variable context in a formula sheds light on a previously overlooked dependency between the residuation principle and the existence predicate in the first-order setting, that may help explain the difficulty in obtaining a complete proof system for first-order bi-intuitionistic logic.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a~generalisation of proof simulation procedures for Frege systems by Bonet and Buss to some logics for which the deduction theorem does not hold. In particular, we study the case of finite-valued Łukasiewicz logics. To this end, we provide proof systems that augment Avron's Frege system for Łukasiewicz three-valued logic with nested and general versions of the disjunction elimination rule, respectively. For these systems we provide upper bounds on speed-ups w.r.t.\ both the number of steps in proofs and the length of proofs. We also consider Tamminga's natural deduction and Avron's hypersequent calculus for 3-valued Łukasiewicz logic and generalise our results considering the disjunction elimination rule to all finite-valued Łukasiewicz logics.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a general family of sequent-style calculi over the modal language and its fragments to capture the essence of all constructively acceptable systems. Calling these calculi \emph{constructive}, we show that any strong enough constructive sequent calculus, satisfying a mild technical condition, feasibly admits all Visser's rules, i.e., there is a polynomial time algorithm that reads a proof of the premise of a Visser's rule and provides a proof for its conclusion. As a positive application, we show the feasible admissibility of Visser's rules in several sequent calculi for intuitionistic modal logics, including $\mathsf{CK}$, $\mathsf{IK}$ and their extensions by the modal axioms $T$, $B$, $4$, $5$, the modal axioms of bounded width and depth and the propositional lax logic. On the negative side, we show that if a strong enough intuitionistic modal logic (satisfying a mild technical condition) does not admit at least one of Visser's rules, then it cannot have a constructive sequent calculus. Consequently, no intermediate logic other than $\mathsf{IPC}$ has a constructive sequent calculus.
On synthesizing Skolem functions for first order logic formulae

Abstract:Skolem functions play a central role in the study of first order logic, both from theoretical and practical perspectives. While every Skolemized formula in first-order logic makes use of Skolem constants and/or functions, not all such Skolem constants and/or functions admit effectively computable interpretations. Indeed, the question of whether there exists an effectively computable interpretation of a Skolem function, and if so, how to automatically synthesize it, is fundamental to their use in several applications, such as planning, strategy synthesis, program synthesis etc. In this paper, we investigate the computability of Skolem functions and their automated synthesis in the full generality of first order logic. We first show a strong negative result, that even under mild assumptions on the vocabulary, it is impossible to obtain computable interpretations of Skolem functions. We then show a positive result, providing a precise characterization of first-order theories that admit effective interpretations of Skolem functions, and also present algorithms to automatically synthesize such interpretations. We discuss applications of our characterization as well as complexity bounds for Skolem functions (interpreted as Turing machines).

Abstract:In this paper we present a proof of Goodman's Theorem, a classical result in the metamathematics of constructivism, which states that the addition of the axiom of choice to Heyting arithmetic in finite types does not increase the collection of provable arithmetical sentences. Our proof relies on several ideas from earlier proofs by other authors, but adds some new ones as well. In particular, we show how a recent paper by Jaap van Oosten can be used to simplify a key step in the proof. We have also included an interesting corollary for classical systems pointed out to us by Ulrich Kohlenbach.

Defining Logical Systems via Algebraic Constraints on Proofs

Abstract:We present a comprehensive programme analysing the decomposition of proof systems for non-classical logics into proof systems for other logics, especially classical logic, using an algebra of constraints. That is, one recovers a proof system for a target logic by enriching a proof system for another, typically simpler, logic with an algebra of constraints that act as correctness conditions on the latter to capture the former; for example, one may use Boolean algebra to give constraints in a sequent calculus for classical propositional logic to produce a sequent calculus for intuitionistic propositional logic. The idea behind such forms of reduction is to obtain a tool for uniform and modular treatment of proof theory and provide a bridge between semantics logics and their proof theory. The article discusses the theoretical background of the project and provides several illustrations of its work in the field of intuitionistic and modal logics. The results include the following: a uniform treatment of modular and cut-free proof systems for a large class of propositional logics; a general criterion for a novel approach to soundness and completeness of a logic with respect to a model-theoretic semantics; and, a case study deriving a model-theoretic semantics from a proof-theoretic specification of a logic.

Abstract:In Feferman's work, explicit mathematics and theories of generalized inductive definitions play a central role. One objective of this article is to describe the connections with Martin-Lof type theory and constructive Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory. Proof theory has contributed to a deeper grasp of the relationship between different frameworks for constructive mathematics. Some of the reductions are known only through ordinal-theoretic characterizations. The paper also addresses the strength of Voevodsky's univalence axiom. A further goal is to investigate the strength of intuitionistic theories of generalized inductive definitions in the framework of intuitionistic explicit mathematics that lie beyond the reach of Martin-Lof type theory.

Unifying Sequent Systems for Gödel-Löb Provability Logic via Syntactic Transformations

Abstract:We demonstrate the inter-translatability of proofs between the most prominent sequent-based formalisms for Gödel-Löb provability logic. In particular, we consider Sambin and Valentini's sequent system GLseq, Shamkanov's non-wellfounded and cyclic sequent systems GL$\infty$ and GLcirc, Poggiolesi's tree-hypersequent system CSGL, and Negri's labeled sequent system G3GL. Shamkanov showed how to transform proofs between GLseq, GL$\infty$, and GLcirc, and Goré and Ramanayake showed how to transform proofs between CSGL and G3GL, however, the exact nature of proof transformations between the former three systems and the latter two systems has remained an open problem. We solve this open problem by showing how to restructure tree-hypersequent proofs into an end-active form and introduce a novel linearization technique that transforms such proofs into linear nested sequent proofs. As a result, we obtain a new proof-theoretic tool for extracting linear nested sequent systems from tree-hypersequent systems, which yields the first cut-free linear nested sequent calculus LNGL for Gödel-Löb provability logic. We show how to transform proofs in LNGL into a certain normal form, where proofs repeat in stages of modal and local rule applications, and which are translatable into GLseq and G3GL proofs. These new syntactic transformations, together with those mentioned above, establish full proof-theoretic correspondences between GLseq, GL$\infty$, GLcirc, CSGL, G3GL, and LNGL while also giving (to the best of the author's knowledge) the first constructive proof mappings between structural (viz. labeled, tree-hypersequent, and linear nested sequent) systems and a cyclic sequent system.

Abstract:Proof nets provide abstract counterparts to sequent proofs modulo rule permutations; the idea being that if two proofs have the same underlying proof-net, they are in essence the same proof. Providing a convincing proof-net counterpart to proofs in the classical sequent calculus is thus an important step in understanding classical sequent calculus proofs. By convincing, we mean that (a) there should be a canonical function from sequent proofs to proof nets, (b) it should be possible to check the correctness of a net in polynomial time, (c) every correct net should be obtainable from a sequent calculus proof, and (d) there should be a cut-elimination procedure which preserves correctness. Previous attempts to give proof-net-like objects for propositional classical logic have failed at least one of the above conditions. In [23], the author presented a calculus of proof nets (expansion nets) satisfying (a) and (b); the paper defined a sequent calculus corresponding to expansion nets but gave no explicit demonstration of (c). That sequent calculus, called LK\ast in this paper, is a novel one-sided sequent calculus with both additively and multiplicatively formulated disjunction rules. In this paper (a self-contained extended version of [23]), we give a full proof of (c) for expansion nets with respect to LK\ast, and in addition give a cut-elimination procedure internal to expansion nets - this makes expansion nets the first notion of proof-net for classical logic satisfying all four criteria.
