Abstract:In Feferman's work, explicit mathematics and theories of generalized inductive definitions play a central role. One objective of this article is to describe the connections with Martin-Lof type theory and constructive Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory. Proof theory has contributed to a deeper grasp of the relationship between different frameworks for constructive mathematics. Some of the reductions are known only through ordinal-theoretic characterizations. The paper also addresses the strength of Voevodsky's univalence axiom. A further goal is to investigate the strength of intuitionistic theories of generalized inductive definitions in the framework of intuitionistic explicit mathematics that lie beyond the reach of Martin-Lof type theory.

Abstract:Well-known principles of induction include monotone induction and different sorts of non-monotone induction such as inflationary induction, induction over well-founded sets and iterated induction. In this work, we define a logic formalizing induction over well-founded sets and monotone and iterated induction. Just as the principle of positive induction has been formalized in FO(LFP), and the principle of inflationary induction has been formalized in FO(IFP), this paper formalizes the principle of iterated induction in a new logic for Non-Monotone Inductive Definitions (ID-logic). The semantics of the logic is strongly influenced by the well-founded semantics of logic programming. Our main result concerns the modularity properties of inductive definitions in ID-logic. Specifically, we formulate conditions under which a simultaneous definition $\D$ of several relations is logically equivalent to a conjunction of smaller definitions $\D_1 \land ... \land \D_n$ with disjoint sets of defined predicates. The difficulty of the result comes from the fact that predicates $P_i$ and $P_j$ defined in $\D_i$ and $\D_j$, respectively, may be mutually connected by simultaneous induction. Since logic programming and abductive logic programming under well-founded semantics are proper fragments of our logic, our modularity results are applicable there as well.

Abstract:The definition is a common form of human expert knowledge, a building block of formal science and mathematics, a foundation for database theory and is supported in various forms in many knowledge representation and formal specification languages and systems. This paper is a formal study of some of the most common forms of inductive definitions found in scientific text: monotone inductive definition, definition by induction over a well-founded order and iterated inductive definitions. We define a logic of definitions offering a uniform formal syntax to express definitions of the different sorts, and we define its semantics by a faithful formalization of the induction process. Several fundamental properties of definition by induction emerge: the non-determinism of the induction process, the confluence of induction processes, the role of the induction order and its relation to the inductive rules, how the induction order constrains the induction process and, ultimately, that the induction order is irrelevant: the defined set does not depend on the induction order. We propose an inductive construction capable of constructing the defined set without using the induction order. We investigate borderline definitions of the sort that appears in definitional paradoxes.
Proof-theoretic methods in quantifier-free definability

Abstract:We introduce a proof-theoretic method for showing nondefinability of second-order intuitionistic connectives by quantifier-free schemata. We apply the method to confirm that Taranovsky's "realizability disjunction" connective does not admit a quantifier-free definition, and use it to obtain new results and more nuanced information about the nondefinability of Kreisel's and Połacik's unary connectives. The finitary and combinatorial nature of our method makes it more resilient to changes in metatheory than common semantic approaches, whose robustness tends to waver once we pass to non-classical and especially anti-classical settings. Furthermore, we can easily transcribe the problem-specific subproofs into univalent type theory and check them using the Agda proof assistant.

A topological reading of inductive and coinductive definitions in Dependent Type Theory

Abstract:In the context of dependent type theory, we show that coinductive predicates have an equivalent topological counterpart in terms of coinductively generated positivity relations, introduced by G. Sambin to represent closed subsets in point-free topology. Our work is complementary to a previous one with M.E. Maietti, where we showed that, in dependent type theory, the well-known concept of wellfounded trees has a topological equivalent counterpart in terms of proof-relevant inductively generated formal covers used to provide a predicative and constructive representation of complete suplattices. All proofs in Martin-Löf's type theory are formalised in the Agda proof assistant.

Going Forth and Drawing Back: an Intensional Approach in Nonmonotonic Inference.

Abstract:We decompose a nonmonotonic inference Gamma (sic) alpha into two stages: going forth to deduce all default conclusions in a logic system named DC (short for Default Conclusions), and drawing back less preferable conclusions in the face of conflicting default conclusions, based on a binary "more preferable" relation defined on those subformulas of that are also its deductive consequences. Under the possible-world semantics framework, we construct a set selection function and build up a theory of semantics, as a variant of traditional selection function semantics. We prove that the underlying logic system DC is sound and complete with respect to set selection function semantics. Using this two-layer mechanism, we account for benchmark examples including the Nixon Diamond and the Penguin Principle.
Domain Theory in Constructive and Predicative Univalent Foundations

Abstract:We develop domain theory in constructive and predicative univalent foundations (also known as homotopy type theory). That we work predicatively means that we do not assume Voevodsky's propositional resizing axioms. Our work is constructive in the sense that we do not rely on excluded middle or the axiom of (countable) choice. Domain theory studies so-called directed complete posets (dcpos) and Scott continuous maps between them and has applications in programming language semantics, higher-type computability and topology. A common approach to deal with size issues in a predicative foundation is to work with information systems, abstract bases or formal topologies rather than dcpos, and approximable relations rather than Scott continuous functions. In our type-theoretic approach, we instead accept that dcpos may be large and work with type universes to account for this. A priori one might expect that complex constructions of dcpos result in a need for ever-increasing universes and are predicatively impossible. We show that such constructions can be carried out in a predicative setting. We illustrate the development with applications in the semantics of programming languages: the soundness and computational adequacy of the Scott model of PCF and Scott's $D_\infty$ model of the untyped $\lambda$-calculus. We also give a predicative account of continuous and algebraic dcpos, and of the related notions of a small basis and its rounded ideal completion. The fact that nontrivial dcpos have large carriers is in fact unavoidable and characteristic of our predicative setting, as we explain in a complementary chapter on the constructive and predicative limitations of univalent foundations. Our account of domain theory in univalent foundations is fully formalised with only a few minor exceptions. The ability of the proof assistant Agda to infer universe levels has been invaluable for our purposes.

Choice and independence of premise rules in intuitionistic set theory

Abstract:Choice and independence of premise principles play an important role in characterizing Kreisel's modified realizability and Gödel's Dialectica interpretation. In this paper we show that a great many intuitionistic set theories are closed under the corresponding rules for finite types over $\mathbb{N}$. It is also shown that the existence property (or existential definability property) holds for statements of the form $\exists y^{\sigma}\, \varphi(y)$, where the variable $y$ ranges over objects of finite type $\sigma$. This applies in particular to ${\sf CZF}$ (Constructive Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory) and ${\sf IZF}$ (Intuitionistic Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory), two systems known not to have the general existence property. On the technical side, the paper uses a method that amalgamates generic realizability for set theory with truth, whereby the underlying partial combinatory algebra is required to contain all objects of finite type.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to define a partial Propositional Type Theory. Our system is partial in a double sense: the hierarchy of (propositional) types contains partial functions and some expressions of the language, including formulas, may be undefined. The specific interpretation we give to the undefined value is that of Kleene's strong logic of indeterminacy. We present a semantics for the new system and prove that every element of any domain of the hierarchy has a name in the object language. Finally, we provide a proof system and a (constructive) proof of completeness.

Cyclic proofs for arithmetical inductive definitions

Abstract:We investigate the cyclic proof theory of extensions of Peano Arithmetic by (finitely iterated) inductive definitions. Such theories are essential to proof theoretic analyses of certain `impredicative' theories; moreover, our cyclic systems naturally subsume Simpson's Cyclic Arithmetic. Our main result is that cyclic and inductive systems for arithmetical inductive definitions are equally powerful. We conduct a metamathematical argument, formalising the soundness of cyclic proofs within second-order arithmetic by a form of induction on closure ordinals, thence appealing to conservativity results. This approach is inspired by those of Simpson and Das for Cyclic Arithmetic, however we must further address a difficulty: the closure ordinals of our inductive definitions (around Church-Kleene) far exceed the proof theoretic ordinal of the appropriate metatheory (around Bachmann-Howard), so explicit induction on their notations is not possible. For this reason, we rather rely on formalisation of the theory of (recursive) ordinals within second-order arithmetic.

Abstract:Inference systems are a widespread framework used to define possibly recursive predicates by means of inference rules. They allow both inductive and coinductive interpretations that are fairly well-studied. In this paper, we consider a middle way interpretation, called regular, which combines advantages of both approaches: it allows non-well-founded reasoning while being finite. We show that the natural proof-theoretic definition of the regular interpretation, based on regular trees, coincides with a rational fixed point. Then, we provide an equivalent inductive characterization, which leads to an algorithm which looks for a regular derivation of a judgment. Relying on these results, we define proof techniques for regular reasoning: the regular coinduction principle, to prove completeness, and an inductive technique to prove soundness, based on the inductive characterization of the regular interpretation. Finally, we show the regular approach can be smoothly extended to inference systems with corules, a recently introduced, generalised framework, which allows one to refine the coinductive interpretation, proving that also this flexible regular interpretation admits an equivalent inductive characterisation.

Relative induction principles for type theories

Abstract:We present new induction principles for the syntax of dependent type theories, which we call relative induction principles. The result of the induction principle relative to a functor F into the syntax is stable over the codomain of F. We rely on the internal language of presheaf categories. In order to combine the internal languages of multiple presheaf categories, we use Dependent Right Adjoints and Multimodal Type Theory. Categorical gluing is used to prove these induction principles, but it not visible in their statements, which involve a notion of model without context extensions. As example applications of these induction principles, we give short and boilerplate-free proofs of canonicity and normalization for some small type theories, and sketch proofs of other metatheoretic results.

Abstract:Many a concrete theorem of abstract algebra admits a short and elegant proof by contradiction but with Zorn's Lemma (ZL). A few of these theorems have recently turned out to follow in a direct and elementary way from the Principle of Open Induction distinguished by Raoult. The ideal objects characteristic of any invocation of ZL are eliminated, and it is made possible to pass from classical to intuitionistic logic. If the theorem has finite input data, then a finite partial order carries the required instance of induction, which thus is constructively provable. A typical example is the well-known theorem "every nonconstant coefficient of an invertible polynomial is nilpotent".

Abstract:The standard treatment of sets and definable classes in first-order Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory accords in many respects with the Fregean foundational framework, such as the distinction between objects and concepts. Nevertheless, in set theory we may define an explicit association of definable classes with set objects $F\mapsto\varepsilon F$ in such a way, I shall prove, to realize Frege's Basic Law V as a ZF theorem scheme, Russell notwithstanding. A similar analysis applies to the Cantor-Hume principle and to Fregean abstraction generally. Because these extension and abstraction operators are definable, they provide a deflationary account of Fregean abstraction, one expressible in and reducible to set theory -- every assertion in the language of set theory allowing the extension and abstraction operators $\varepsilon F$, $\# G$, $\alpha H$ is equivalent to an assertion not using them. The analysis thus sidesteps Russell's argument, which is revealed not as a refutation of Basic Law~V as such, but rather as a version of Tarski's theorem on the nondefinability of truth, showing that the proto-truth-predicate "$x$ falls under the concept of which $y$ is the extension" is not expressible.

Abstract:In a definition (∀x)((xєr)↔D[x]) of the set r, the definiens D[x] must not depend on the definiendum r. This implies that all quantifiers in D[x] are independent of r and of (∀x). This cannot be implemented in the traditional first-order logic, but can be expressed in IF logic. Violations of such independence requirements are what created the typical paradoxes of set theory. Poincaré’s Vicious Circle Principle was intended to bar such violations. Russell nevertheless misunderstood the principle; for him a set a can depend on another set b only if (bєa) or (b ⊆ a). Likewise, the truth of an ordinary first-order sentence with the Gödel number of r is undefinable in Tarki’s sense because the quantifiers of the definiens depend unavoidably on r.

Abstract:On the basis of test set approach we present a new concept, construction base, that is used to produe complete and irredundant irreducible ground terms, and put forward a construction base induction principle, which organically combines explicit induction and implicit induction and improves test set methods. experimental results show that: our method is more efficient to prove inductive theorems.

Abstract:Proof search has been used to specify a wide range of computation systems. In order to build a framework for reasoning about such specifications, we make use of a sequent calculus involving induction and co-induction. These proof principles are based on a proof-theoretic (rather than set-theoretic) notion of definition (Hallnäs, 1991 [18], Eriksson, 1991 [11], Schroeder-Heister, 1993 [38], McDowell and Miller, 2000 [22]). Definitions are akin to logic programs, where the left and right rules for defined atoms allow one to view theories as “closed” or defining fixed points. The use of definitions and free equality makes it possible to reason intensionally about syntax. We add in a consistent way rules for pre- and post-fixed points, thus allowing the user to reason inductively and co-inductively about properties of computational system making full use of higher-order abstract syntax. Consistency is guaranteed via cut-elimination, where we give a direct cut-elimination procedure in the presence of general inductive and co-inductive definitions via the parametric reducibility technique.

On the Existence and Disjunction Properties in Structural Set Theory

Abstract:We formulate a definition of the existence property that works with "structural" set theories, in the mode of ETCS (the elementary theory of the category of sets). We show that a range of structural set theories, when formulated using constructive logic, satisfy the disjunction, numerical existence, and existence properties; in particular, intuitionist ETCS, formulated with separation and Shulman's replacement of contexts axiom, satisfies these properties. As a consequence of this, we show that, working constructively, replacement of contexts is strictly weaker than collection.
