Abstract:Abstract We establish a course-of-values induction principle for K-finite sets in intuitionistic type theory. Using this principle, we prove a pigeonhole principle conjectured by Bénabou and Loiseau. We also comment on some variants of this pigeonhole principle.

Abstract:In 2007, Terence Tao wrote on his blog an essay about soft analysis, hard analysis and the finitization of soft analysis statements into hard analysis statements. One of his main examples was a quasi-finitization of the infinite pigeonhole principle IPP, arriving at the "finitary" infinite pigeonhole principle FIPP1. That turned out to not be the proper formulation and so we proposed an alternative version FIPP2. Tao himself formulated yet another version FIPP3 in a revised version of his essay. We give a counterexample to FIPP1 and discuss for both of the versions FIPP2 and FIPP3 the faithfulness of their respective finitization of IPP by studying the equivalences IPP <-> FIPP2 and IPP <-> FIPP3 in the context of reverse mathematics. In the process of doing this we also introduce a continuous uniform boundedness principle CUB as a formalization of Tao's notion of a correspondence principle and study the strength of this principle and various restrictions thereof in terms of reverse mathematics, i.e., in terms of the "big five" subsystems of second order arithmetic.

Abstract:We present new induction principles for the syntax of dependent type theories, which we call relative induction principles. The result of the induction principle relative to a functor F into the syntax is stable over the codomain of F. We rely on the internal language of presheaf categories. In order to combine the internal languages of multiple presheaf categories, we use Dependent Right Adjoints and Multimodal Type Theory. Categorical gluing is used to prove these induction principles, but it not visible in their statements, which involve a notion of model without context extensions. As example applications of these induction principles, we give short and boilerplate-free proofs of canonicity and normalization for some small type theories, and sketch proofs of other metatheoretic results.

Abstract:Well-known principles of induction include monotone induction and different sorts of non-monotone induction such as inflationary induction, induction over well-founded sets and iterated induction. In this work, we define a logic formalizing induction over well-founded sets and monotone and iterated induction. Just as the principle of positive induction has been formalized in FO(LFP), and the principle of inflationary induction has been formalized in FO(IFP), this paper formalizes the principle of iterated induction in a new logic for Non-Monotone Inductive Definitions (ID-logic). The semantics of the logic is strongly influenced by the well-founded semantics of logic programming. Our main result concerns the modularity properties of inductive definitions in ID-logic. Specifically, we formulate conditions under which a simultaneous definition $\D$ of several relations is logically equivalent to a conjunction of smaller definitions $\D_1 \land ... \land \D_n$ with disjoint sets of defined predicates. The difficulty of the result comes from the fact that predicates $P_i$ and $P_j$ defined in $\D_i$ and $\D_j$, respectively, may be mutually connected by simultaneous induction. Since logic programming and abductive logic programming under well-founded semantics are proper fragments of our logic, our modularity results are applicable there as well.
On the strength of the finite intersection principle

Abstract:We study the logical content of several maximality principles related to the finite intersection principle ($F\IP$) in set theory. Classically, these are all equivalent to the axiom of choice, but in the context of reverse mathematics their strengths vary: some are equivalent to $\ACA$ over $\RCA$, while others are strictly weaker, and incomparable with $\WKL$. We show that there is a computable instance of $F\IP$ all of whose solutions have hyperimmune degree, and that every computable instance has a solution in every nonzero c.e.\ degree. In terms of other weak principles previously studied in the literature, the former result translates to $F\IP$ implying the omitting partial types principle ($\mathsf{OPT}$). We also show that, modulo $\Sigma^0_2$ induction, $F\IP$ lies strictly below the atomic model theorem ($\mathsf{AMT}$).

Abstract:We formalize various counting principles and compare their strengths over $V^{0}$. In particular, we conjecture the following mutual independence between: (1) a uniform version of modular counting principles and the pigeonhole principle for injections, (2) a version of the oddtown theorem and modular counting principles of modulus $p$, where $p$ is any natural number which is not a power of $2$, (3) and a version of Fisher's inequality and modular counting principles. Then, we give sufficient conditions to prove them. We give a variation of the notion of $PHP$-tree and $k$-evaluation to show that any Frege proof of the pigeonhole principle for injections admitting the uniform counting principle as an axiom scheme cannot have $o(n)$-evaluations. As for the remaining two, we utilize well-known notions of $p$-tree and $k$-evaluation and reduce the problems to the existence of certain families of polynomials witnessing violations of the corresponding combinatorial principles with low-degree Nullstellensatz proofs from the violation of the modular counting principle in concern.

Abstract:We revisit two well-established verification techniques, k-induction and bounded model checking (BMC), in the more general setting of fixed point theory over complete lattices. Our main theoretical contribution is latticed k-induction, which (i) generalizes classical k-induction for verifying transition systems, (ii) generalizes Park induction for bounding fixed points of monotonic maps on complete lattices, and (iii) extends from naturals k to transfinite ordinals kappa, thus yielding kappa-induction. The lattice-theoretic understanding of k-induction and BMC enables us to apply both techniques to the fully automatic verification of infinite-state probabilistic programs. Our prototypical implementation manages to automatically verify non-trivial specifications for probabilistic programs taken from the literature that-using existing techniques-cannot be verified without synthesizing a stronger inductive invariant first.

Abstract:We study the system IFP of intuitionistic fixed point logic, an extension of intuitionistic first-order logic by strictly positive inductive and coinductive definitions. We define a realizability interpretation of IFP and use it to extract computational content from proofs about abstract structures specified by arbitrary classically true disjunction free formulas. The interpretation is shown to be sound with respect to a domain-theoretic denotational semantics and a corresponding lazy operational semantics of a functional language for extracted programs. We also show how extracted programs can be translated into Haskell. As an application we extract a program converting the signed digit representation of real numbers to infinite Gray-code from a proof of inclusion of the corresponding coinductive predicates.

Abstract:We show that the well-known Konig's Min-Max Theorem (KMM), a fundamental result in combinatorial matrix theory, can be proven in the first order theory $\LA$ with induction restricted to $\Sigma_1^B$ formulas. This is an improvement over the standard textbook proof of KMM which requires $\Pi_2^B$ induction, and hence does not yield feasible proofs --- while our new approach does. $\LA$ is a weak theory that essentially captures the ring properties of matrices; however, equipped with $\Sigma_1^B$ induction $\LA$ is capable of proving KMM, and a host of other combinatorial properties such as Menger's, Hall's and Dilworth's Theorems. Therefore, our result formalizes Min-Max type of reasoning within a feasible framework.

Abstract:We introduce a K-theoretic invariant for actions of unitary fusion categories on unital -algebras. We show that for inductive limits of finite dimensional actions of fusion categories on AF-algebras, this is a complete invariant. In particular, this gives a complete invariant for inductive limit actions of finite groups on unital AF-algebras. We apply our results to obtain a classification of finite depth, strongly AF-inclusions of unital AF-algebras.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a theorem that proves a condition when an inclusion morphism between simplicial sets becomes a weak homotopy equivalence. Additionally, we present two applications of this result. The first application demonstrates that cofinal full inclusion functors of (\infty)-categories are weak homotopy equivalences. For our second application, we provide an alternative proof of Barwick's cofinality theorem of algebraic (K)-theory.

Abstract:Choice and independence of premise principles play an important role in characterizing Kreisel's modified realizability and Gödel's Dialectica interpretation. In this paper we show that a great many intuitionistic set theories are closed under the corresponding rules for finite types over $\mathbb{N}$. It is also shown that the existence property (or existential definability property) holds for statements of the form $\exists y^{\sigma}\, \varphi(y)$, where the variable $y$ ranges over objects of finite type $\sigma$. This applies in particular to ${\sf CZF}$ (Constructive Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory) and ${\sf IZF}$ (Intuitionistic Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory), two systems known not to have the general existence property. On the technical side, the paper uses a method that amalgamates generic realizability for set theory with truth, whereby the underlying partial combinatory algebra is required to contain all objects of finite type.

Abstract:We continue the project of the study of reverse mathematics principles inspired by cardinal invariants. In this article in particular we focus on principles encapsulating the existence of large families of objects that are in some sense mutually independent. More precisely, we study the principle MAD stating that a maximal family of pairwise almost disjoint sets exists; and the principle MED expressing the existence of a maximal family of functions that are pairwise eventually different. We investigate characterisations of and relations between these principles and some of their variants. It will turn out that induction strength is an essential parameter in this context.

Abstract:Higher inductive-inductive types (HIITs) generalize inductive types of dependent type theories in two ways. On the one hand they allow the simultaneous definition of multiple sorts that can be indexed over each other. On the other hand they support equality constructors, thus generalizing higher inductive types of homotopy type theory. Examples that make use of both features are the Cauchy real numbers and the well-typed syntax of type theory where conversion rules are given as equality constructors. In this paper we propose a general definition of HIITs using a small type theory, named the theory of signatures. A context in this theory encodes a HIIT by listing the constructors. We also compute notions of induction and recursion for HIITs, by using variants of syntactic logical relation translations. Building full categorical semantics and constructing initial algebras is left for future work. The theory of HIIT signatures was formalised in Agda together with the syntactic translations. We also provide a Haskell implementation, which takes signatures as input and outputs translation results as valid Agda code.

Abstract:In Feferman's work, explicit mathematics and theories of generalized inductive definitions play a central role. One objective of this article is to describe the connections with Martin-Lof type theory and constructive Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory. Proof theory has contributed to a deeper grasp of the relationship between different frameworks for constructive mathematics. Some of the reductions are known only through ordinal-theoretic characterizations. The paper also addresses the strength of Voevodsky's univalence axiom. A further goal is to investigate the strength of intuitionistic theories of generalized inductive definitions in the framework of intuitionistic explicit mathematics that lie beyond the reach of Martin-Lof type theory.

Abstract:A cyclic proof system gives us another way of representing inductive definitions and efficient proof search. In 2011 Brotherston and Simpson conjectured the equivalence between the provability of the classical cyclic proof system and that of the classical system of Martin-Lof's inductive definitions. This paper studies the conjecture for intuitionistic logic. This paper first points out that the countermodel of FOSSACS 2017 paper by the same authors shows the conjecture for intuitionistic logic is false in general. Then this paper shows the conjecture for intuitionistic logic is true under arithmetic, namely, the provability of the intuitionistic cyclic proof system is the same as that of the intuitionistic system of Martin-Lof's inductive definitions when both systems contain Heyting arithmetic HA. For this purpose, this paper also shows that HA proves Podelski-Rybalchenko theorem for induction and Kleene-Brouwer theorem for induction. These results immediately give another proof to the conjecture under arithmetic for classical logic shown in LICS 2017 paper by the same authors.
Countability of Inductive Types Formalized in the Object-Logic Level

Abstract:The set of integer number lists with finite length, and the set of binary trees with integer labels are both countably infinite. Many inductively defined types also have countably many elements. In this paper, we formalize the syntax of first order inductive definitions in Coq and prove them countable, under some side conditions. Instead of writing a proof generator in a meta language, we develop an axiom-free proof in the Coq object logic. In other words, our proof is a dependently typed Coq function from the syntax of the inductive definition to the countability of the type. Based on this proof, we provide a Coq tactic to automatically prove the countability of concrete inductive types. We also developed Coq libraries for countability and for the syntax of inductive definitions, which have value on their own.

Abstract:Quotient inductive-inductive types (QIITs) are generalized inductive types which allow sorts to be indexed over previously declared sorts, and allow usage of equality constructors. QIITs are especially useful for algebraic descriptions of type theories and constructive definitions of real, ordinal and surreal numbers. We develop new metatheory for large QIITs, large elimination, recursive equations and infinitary constructors. As in prior work, we describe QIITs using a type theory where each context represents a QIIT signature. However, in our case the theory of signatures can also describe its own signature, modulo universe sizes. We bootstrap the model theory of signatures using self-description and a Church-coded notion of signature, without using complicated raw syntax or assuming an existing internal QIIT of signatures. We give semantics to described QIITs by modeling each signature as a finitely complete CwF (category with families) of algebras. Compared to the case of finitary QIITs, we additionally need to show invariance under algebra isomorphisms in the semantics. We do this by modeling signature types as isofibrations. Finally, we show by a term model construction that every QIIT is constructible from the syntax of the theory of signatures.

The reverse mathematics of the pigeonhole hierarchy

Abstract:The infinite pigeonhole principle for $k$ colors ($\mathsf{RT}_k$) states, for every $k$-partition $A_0 \sqcup \dots \sqcup A_{k-1} = \mathbb{N}$, the existence of an infinite subset~$H \subseteq A_i$ for some~$i < k$. This seemingly trivial combinatorial principle constitutes the basis of Ramsey's theory, and plays a very important role in computability and proof theory. In this article, we study the infinite pigeonhole principle at various levels of the arithmetical hierarchy from both a computability-theoretic and reverse mathematical viewpoint. We prove that this hierarchy is strict over~$\mathsf{RCA}_0$ using an elaborate iterated jump control construction, and study its first-order consequences. This is part of a large meta-mathematical program studying the computational content of combinatorial theorems.

Abstract:We study variants of Buss's theories of bounded arithmetic axiomatized by induction schemes disallowing the use of parameters, and closely related induction inference rules. We put particular emphasis on $\hat{\varPi }^{b}_i$ induction schemes, which were so far neglected in the literature. We present inclusions and conservation results between the systems (including a witnessing theorem for $T^i_2$ and $S^i_2$ of a new form), results on numbers of instances of the axioms or rules, connections to reflection principles for quantified propositional calculi, and separations between the systems.
