Abstract:The problem of counting all inequivalent monotone Boolean functions of nine variables is considered. We solve the problem using known algorithms and deriving new ones when necessary. We describe methods to count fixed points in sets of all monotone Boolean functions under a given permutation of input variables. With these techniques as a basis, we tabulate the cardinalities of these sets for nine variables. By applying Burnside’s lemma and the numbers obtained, we calculate the number of inequivalent monotone Boolean functions of 9 variables, which equals 789,204,635,842,035,040,527,740,846,300,252,680.

Abstract:The number of quantifiers needed to express first-order (FO) properties is captured by two-player combinatorial games called multi-structural games. We analyze these games on binary strings with an ordering relation, using a technique we call parallel play, which significantly reduces the number of quantifiers needed in many cases. Ordered structures such as strings have historically been notoriously difficult to analyze in the context of these and similar games. Nevertheless, in this paper, we provide essentially tight upper bounds on the number of quantifiers needed to characterize different-sized subsets of strings. The results immediately give bounds on the number of quantifiers necessary to define several different classes of Boolean functions. One of our results is analogous to Lupanov's upper bounds on circuit size and formula size in propositional logic: we show that every Boolean function on $n$-bit inputs can be defined by a FO sentence having $(1 + \varepsilon)n\log(n) + O(1)$ quantifiers, and that this is essentially tight. We reduce this number to $(1 + \varepsilon)\log(n) + O(1)$ when the Boolean function in question is sparse.

Abstract:We study the number of queries needed to identify a monotone Boolean function $f:\{0,1\}^n \rightarrow \{0,1\}$. A query consists of a 0-1-sequence, and the answer is the value of $f$ on that sequence. It is well-known that the number of queries needed is $\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}+\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor+1}$ in general. Here we study a variant where $f$ has $k$ ``reasons'' to be 1, i.e., its disjunctive normal form has $k$ conjunctions if the redundant conjunctions are deleted. This problem is equivalent to identifying an upfamily in $2^{[n]}$ that has exactly $k$ minimal members. We find the asymptotics on the number of queries needed for fixed $k$. We also study the non-adaptive version of the problem, where the queries are asked at the same time, and determine the exact number of queries for most values of $k$ and $n$.

Abstract:Affine equivalence classification of Boolean functions has significant applications in logic synthesis and cryptography. Previous studies for classification have been limited by the large set of Boolean functions and the complex operations on the affine group. Although there are many research on affine equivalence classification for parts of Boolean functions in recent years, there are very few results for the entire set of Boolean functions. The best existing result has been achieved by Harrison with 15768919 affine equivalence classes for 6-variable Boolean functions. This paper presents a concise formula for affine equivalence classification of the entire set of Boolean functions as well as a formula for affine classification of Boolean functions with distinct ON-set size respectively. The method outlined in this paper greatly simplifies the affine group's action by constructing an isomorphism mapping from the affine group to a permutation group. By this method, we can compute the affine equivalence classes for up to 10 variables. Experiment results indicate that our scheme for calculating the affine equivalence classes for more than 6 variables is a significant advancement over previous published methods.

Abstract:In this paper, a new method for constructing 2-resilient rotation symmetric Boolean functions with odd number of variables is presented. Based on an equivalent characterization of this class of functions and the relation between the orbit matrices and their complements, a system of equations about 2-tuples distribution matrix is established. Then the constructions of some 2-resilient rotation symmetric Boolean functions with odd number of variables can be converted into the solutions of the system of equations. We also give a sufficient condition for the constructed functions to have the maximum algebraic degree. Moreover, we provide a lower bound on the number of nonlinear 2-resilient rotation symmetric Boolean functions with odd number of variables. Particularly, the lower bound is 152 for seven number of variables.

Abstract:It is shown that the counting function of n Boolean variables can be implemented with the formulae of size O(n^3.06) over the basis of all 2-input Boolean functions and of size O(n^4.54) over the standard basis. The same bounds follow for the complexity of any threshold symmetric function of n variables and particularly for the majority function. Any bit of the product of binary numbers of length n can be computed by formulae of size O(n^4.06) or O(n^5.54) depending on basis. Incidentally the bounds O(n^3.23) and O(n^4.82) on the formula size of any symmetric function of n variables with respect to the basis are obtained.

On the Rational Degree of Boolean Functions and Applications

Abstract:We study a natural complexity measure of Boolean functions known as the (exact) rational degree. For total functions $f$, it is conjectured that $\mathrm{rdeg}(f)$ is polynomially related to $\mathrm{deg}(f)$, where $\mathrm{deg}(f)$ is the Fourier degree. Towards this conjecture, we show that symmetric functions have rational degree at least $\mathrm{deg}(f)/2$ and monotone functions have rational degree at least $\sqrt{\mathrm{deg}(f)}$. We observe that both of these lower bounds are tight. In addition, we show that all read-once depth-$d$ Boolean formulae have rational degree at least $\Omega(\mathrm{deg}(f)^{1/d})$. Furthermore, we show that almost every Boolean function on $n$ variables has rational degree at least $n/2 - O(\sqrt{n})$. In contrast to total functions, we exhibit partial functions that witness unbounded separations between rational and approximate degree, in both directions. As a consequence, we show that for quantum computers, post-selection and bounded-error are incomparable resources in the black-box model.

Abstract:A method to construct Boolean functions with maximum algebraic immunity have been proposed in [1]. Based on that method, we propose a different method to construct Boolean functions on even variables with maximum algebraic immunity in this letter. By counting on our construction, a lower bound of the number of such Boolean functions is derived, which is the best among all the existing lower bounds.

Abstract:For every $n >0$, we show the existence of a CNF tautology over $O(n^2)$ variables of width $O(\log n)$ such that it has a Polynomial Calculus Resolution refutation over $\{0,1\}$ variables of size $O(n^3polylog(n))$ but any Polynomial Calculus refutation over $\{+1,-1\}$ variables requires size $2^{\Omega(n)}$. This shows that Polynomial Calculus sizes over the $\{0,1\}$ and $\{+1,-1\}$ bases are incomparable (since Tseitin tautologies show a separation in the other direction) and answers an open problem posed by Sokolov [Sok20] and Razborov.

Abstract:The spectrum of a complex-valued function $f$ on $\mathbb{Z}_{q}^n$ is the set $\{|u|:u\in \mathbb{Z}_q^n~\mathrm{and}~\widehat{f}(u)\neq 0\}$, where $|u|$ is the Hamming weight of $u$ and $\widehat{f}$ is the Fourier transform of $f$. Let $1\leq d'\leq d\leq n$. In this work, we study Boolean functions on $\mathbb{Z}_{q}^n$, $q\geq 3$, whose spectrum is a subset of $\{0\}\cup \{d',\ldots,d\}$. We prove that such functions have at most $\frac{d}{2}\cdot \frac{q^{d+d'}}{2^{d'}(q-1)^{d'}}$ relevant variables for $d'+d\leq n+1$. In particular, we prove that any Boolean function of degree $d$ on $\mathbb{Z}_{q}^n$, $q\geq 3$, has at most $\frac{dq^{d+1}}{4(q-1)}$ relevant variables. We also show that any equitable 2-partition of the Hamming graph $H(n,q)$, $q\geq 3$, associated with the eigenvalue $n(q-1)-qd$ has at most $\frac{d}{2}\cdot \frac{q^{2d}}{2^d(q-1)^{d}}$ relevant variables for $d\leq \frac{n+1}{2}$.

Abstract:Algebraic immunity has been proposed as an important property of Boolean functions. To resist algebraic attack, a Boolean function should possess high algebraic immunity. It is well known now that the algebraic immunity of an $n$-variable Boolean function is upper bounded by $\left\lceil {\frac{n}{2}} \right\rceil $. In this paper, for an odd integer $n$, we present a construction method which can efficiently generate a Boolean function of $n$ variables with maximum algebraic immunity, and we also show that any such function can be generated by this method. Moreover, the number of such Boolean functions is greater than $2^{2^{n-1}}$.

Abstract:Affine equivalent classes of Boolean functions have many applications in modern cryptography and circuit design. Previous publications have shown that affine equivalence on the entire space of Boolean functions can be computed up to 10 variables, but not on the quotient Boolean function space modulo functions of different degrees. Computing the number of equivalent classes of cosets of Reed-Muller code $\mathcal {R}(1,n)$ is equivalent to classifying Boolean functions modulo linear functions, which can be computed only when n ≤ 7. Based on the linear representation of the affine group $\mathcal {A}\mathcal {G}{\mathscr{L}}(n,2)$ on the quotient space $\mathcal {R}(s,n)/\mathcal {R}(k,n)$ , we obtain a useful counting formula to compute the number of equivalent classes. Instead of computing the conjugacy classes and representatives directly in $\mathcal {A}\mathcal {G}{\mathscr{L}}(n,2)$ , we reduce the computation complexity by introducing an isomorphic permutation group Pn and performing the computation in Pn. With the proposed algorithm, the number of equivalent classes of cosets of R(1,n) can be computed up to 10 variables. Furthermore, the number of equivalent classes on $\mathcal {R}(s,n)/\mathcal {R}(k,n)$ can also be computed when − 1 ≤ k < s ≤ n ≤ 10, which is a major improvement and advancement comparing to previous methods.

Abstract:We consider Boolean functions f:{-1,1}^n->{-1,1} that are close to a sum of independent functions on mutually exclusive subsets of the variables. We prove that any such function is close to just a single function on a single subset. We also consider Boolean functions f:R^n->{-1,1} that are close, with respect to any product distribution over R^n, to a sum of their variables. We prove that any such function is close to one of the variables. Both our results are independent of the number of variables, but depend on the variance of f. I.e., if f is \epsilon*Var(f)-close to a sum of independent functions or random variables, then it is O(\epsilon)-close to one of the independent functions or random variables, respectively. We prove that this dependence on Var(f) is tight. Our results are a generalization of the Friedgut-Kalai-Naor Theorem [FKN'02], which holds for functions f:{-1,1}^n->{-1,1} that are close to a linear combination of uniformly distributed Boolean variables.

Abstract:Determining the affine equivalence of Boolean functions has significant applications in circuit and cryptography. Previous methods for determining this require a large amount of computation when Boolean functions are bent functions or when the truth table is sparse. This paper presents a new method to determine the affine equivalence based on matrix algebra. By transforming Boolean function to the corresponding matrix representation, we first propose and prove the congruent standard form of Boolean function. It lays the foundation for the determination of equivalence because affine Boolean functions must have the same standard form. Then we find the generators of orthogonal matrix group and symplectic matrix group, which greatly reduce the search space. The computation complexity of our method is o(2(r 2/2+n * (n-r) )), where n is the number of bit operations, and r is the rank of the matrix, which is the product of Boolean-1 matrix of the test Boolean function and its transposition. The experimental results show that our method is useful when the test Boolean function is no more than 7 bits and r is greater than 2.
A Lower Bound for Boolean Satisfiability on Turing Machines

Abstract:We establish a lower bound for deciding the satisfiability of the conjunction of any two Boolean formulas from a set called a full representation of Boolean functions of $n$ variables - a set containing a Boolean formula to represent each Boolean function of $n$ variables. The contradiction proof first assumes that there exists a Turing machine with $k$ symbols in its tape alphabet that correctly decides the satisfiability of the conjunction of any two Boolean formulas from such a set by making fewer than $2^nlog_k2$ moves. By using multiple runs of this Turing machine, with one run for each Boolean function of $n$ variables, the proof derives a contradiction by showing that this Turing machine is unable to correctly decide the satisfiability of the conjunction of at least one pair of Boolean formulas from a full representation of $n$-variable Boolean functions if the machine makes fewer than $2^nlog_k2$ moves. This lower bound holds for any full representation of Boolean functions of $n$ variables, even if a full representation consists solely of minimized Boolean formulas derived by a Boolean minimization method. We discuss why the lower bound fails to hold for satisfiability of certain restricted formulas, such as 2CNF satisfiability, XOR-SAT, and HORN-SAT. We also relate the lower bound to 3CNF satisfiability. The lower bound does not depend on sequentiality of access to the tape squares and will hold even if a machine is capable of non-sequential access.

Abstract:Reversible logic function classification plays an important role in reversible logic synthesis. This paper studies the calculation of the number of the equivalence classes for reversible logic functions. In order to do this work, an n-qubit reversible function is expressed as a permutation in the symmetric group $S_{2^{n}}$, so that a universal formula for calculating the number of equivalence classes of reversible logic functions is derived based on group theory. Based on the calculation method of the number of conjugacy classes of permutation groups, an improved method for calculating the number of equivalence classes of reversible logic functions is obtained. In the experiments with GAP software on a laptop, we can compute the NPNP-equivalence classes for up to 13 qubits, LL-equivalence classes for up to 10 qubits and AA-equivalence classes for up to 10 qubits. Experiment results indicate that our scheme for calculating these equivalence classes of more than 6 qubits over previous published methods is a significant advancement.
