Abstract:We focus on the computational aspects of counting interval sizes in the poset $D_n$, which represents all monotone Boolean functions of $n$ variables. We present a resource-aware algorithm enabling the calculation of interval sizes in $D_7$.

Abstract:The problem of counting all inequivalent monotone Boolean functions of nine variables is considered. We solve the problem using known algorithms and deriving new ones when necessary. We describe methods to count fixed points in sets of all monotone Boolean functions under a given permutation of input variables. With these techniques as a basis, we tabulate the cardinalities of these sets for nine variables. By applying Burnside’s lemma and the numbers obtained, we calculate the number of inequivalent monotone Boolean functions of 9 variables, which equals 789,204,635,842,035,040,527,740,846,300,252,680.

Abstract:Let $\mathfrak{S}_n$ denote the symmetric group and let $W(\mathfrak{S}_n)$ denote the weak order of $\mathfrak{S}_n$. Through a surprising connection to a subset of parking functions, which we call unit Fubini rankings, we provide a complete characterization and enumeration for the total number of Boolean intervals in $W(\mathfrak{S}_n)$ and the total number of Boolean intervals of rank $k$ in $W(\mathfrak{S}_n)$. Furthermore, for any $\pi\in\mathfrak{S}_n$, we establish that the number of Boolean intervals in $W(\mathfrak{S}_n)$ with minimal element $\pi$ is a product of Fibonacci numbers. We conclude with some directions for further study.

Counting Self-Dual Interval Orders

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new method to derive formulas for the generating functions of interval orders, counted with respect to their size, magnitude, and number of minimal and maximal elements. Our method allows us not only to generalize previous results on refined enumeration of general interval orders, but also to enumerate self-dual interval orders with respect to analogous statistics. Using the newly derived generating function formulas, we are able to prove a bijective relationship between self-dual interval orders and upper-triangular matrices with no zero rows. Previously, a similar bijective relationship has been established between general interval orders and upper-triangular matrices with no zero rows and columns.

Abstract:Representations of interval orders are, in general, may use an arbitrary set of interval lengths. We can define subclasses of interval orders by restricting the allowable lengths of intervals. Motivated by a recent paper of Keller, Trenk, and Young, we study the dimension of posets in some of these subclasses. Among other results, we answer several of their questions, and we simplify the proof of one of their main results.

Abstract:We study the number of queries needed to identify a monotone Boolean function $f:\{0,1\}^n \rightarrow \{0,1\}$. A query consists of a 0-1-sequence, and the answer is the value of $f$ on that sequence. It is well-known that the number of queries needed is $\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}+\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor+1}$ in general. Here we study a variant where $f$ has $k$ ``reasons'' to be 1, i.e., its disjunctive normal form has $k$ conjunctions if the redundant conjunctions are deleted. This problem is equivalent to identifying an upfamily in $2^{[n]}$ that has exactly $k$ minimal members. We find the asymptotics on the number of queries needed for fixed $k$. We also study the non-adaptive version of the problem, where the queries are asked at the same time, and determine the exact number of queries for most values of $k$ and $n$.

Abstract:In the area of forbidden subposet problems we look for the largest possible size $La(n,P)$ of a family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ that does not contain a forbidden inclusion pattern described by $P$. The main conjecture of the area states that for any finite poset $P$ there exists an integer $e(P)$ such that $La(n,P)=(e(P)+o(1))\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}$. In this paper, we formulate three strengthenings of this conjecture and prove them for some specific classes of posets. (The parameters $x(P)$ and $d(P)$ are defined in the paper.) $\bullet$ For any finite connected poset $P$ and $\varepsilon>0$, there exists $\delta>0$ and an integer $x(P)$ such that for any $n$ large enough, and $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ of size $(e(P)+\varepsilon)\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}$, $\mathcal{F}$ contains at least $\delta n^{x(P)}\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}$ copies of $P$. $\bullet$ The number of $P$-free families in $2^{[n]}$ is $2^{(e(P)+o(1))\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}}$. $\bullet$ For any finite poset $P$, there exists a positive rational $d(P)$ such that if $p=\omega(n^{-d(P)})$, then the size of the largest $P$-free family in $\mathcal{P}(n,p)$ is $(e(P)+o(1))p\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}$ with high probability.

Abstract:Let $P(n)$ be the set of all posets with $n$ elements. Let $P^{(j)}(n)$, $1\leq j\leq 2^n,$ be the number of all posets with $n$ elements possessing exactly $j$ antichains. We have determined the numbers $P^{(j)}(7),$ $1\leq j\leq 128$, and using a result of M.~Erné [Erné, M., On the cardinalities of finite topologies and the number of antichains in partially ordered sets, Discrete Mathematics 35 (1981), 119-133.], we compute $|P(10)|$ without the aid of any computer program. We include the Hasse diagrams of all the non-isomorphic posets of $P(7)$. We also present formulas for the number of connected posets of certain forms, and use them to compute $|P(n)|$ with $1\le n\le 8$ by a different method.

A Polynomial Upper Bound for Poset Saturation

Abstract:Given a finite poset $\mathcal P$, we say that a family $\mathcal F$ of subsets of $[n]$ is $\mathcal P$-saturated if $\mathcal F$ does not contain an induced copy of $\mathcal P$, but adding any other set to $\mathcal F$ creates an induced copy of $\mathcal P$. The induced saturation number of $\mathcal P$, denoted by $\text{sat}^*(n,\mathcal P)$, is the size of the smallest $\mathcal P$-saturated family with ground set $[n]$. In this paper we prove that the saturation number for any given poset grows at worst polynomially. More precisely, we show that $\text{sat}^*(n, \mathcal P)=O(n^c)$, where $c\leq|\mathcal{P}|^2/4+1$ is a constant depending on $\mathcal P$ only. We obtain this result by bounding the VC-dimension of our family.

Abstract:The Interval poset of a permutation is an effective way of capturing all the intervals of the permutation and the inclusions between them and was introduced recently by Tenner. Thi paper explores the geometric interpretation of interval posets of permutations. We present a bijection between tree interval posets and convex polygons with non-crossing diagonals, offering a novel geometric perspective on this purely combinatorial concept. Additionally, we provide an enumeration of interval posets using this bijection and demonstrate its application to block-wise simple permutations.

Abstract:The interval poset of a permutation is the set of intervals of a permutation, ordered with respect to inclusion. It has been introduced and studied recently in [B. Tenner, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2007.06142" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2007.06142">arXiv:2007.06142</a>]. We study this poset from the perspective of the decomposition trees of permutations, describing a procedure to obtain the former from the latter. We then give alternative proofs of some of the results in [B. Tenner, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2007.06142" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2007.06142">arXiv:2007.06142</a>], and we solve the open problems that it posed (and some other enumerative problems) using techniques from symbolic and analytic combinatorics. Finally, we compute the Möbius function on such posets.

Abstract:We develop a powerful tool for embedding any tree poset $P$ of height $k$ in the Boolean lattice which allows us to solve several open problems in the area. We show that: * If $\mathcal{F}$ is a family in $\mathcal{B}_n$ with $|\mathcal{F}|\ge (q-1+\varepsilon){n\choose \lfloor n/2\rfloor}$ for some $q\ge k$, then $\mathcal{F}$ contains on the order of as many induced copies of $P$ as is contained in the $q$ middle layers of the Boolean lattice. This generalizes results of Bukh and Boehnlein and Jiang which guaranteed a single such copy in non-induced and induced settings respectively. * The number of induced $P$-free families of $\mathcal{B}_n$ is $2^{(k-1+o(1)){n\choose \lfloor n/2\rfloor}}$, strengthening recent independent work of Balogh, Garcia, Wigal who obtained the same bounds in the non-induced setting. * The largest induced $P$-free subset of a $p$-random subset of $\mathcal{B}_n$ for $p\gg n^{-1}$ has size at most $(k-1+o(1))p{n\choose \lfloor n/2\rfloor}$, generalizing previous work of Balogh, Mycroft, and Treglown and of Collares and Morris for the case when $P$ is a chain. All three results are asymptotically tight and give affirmative answers to general conjectures of Gerbner, Nagy, Patkós, and Vizer in the case of tree posets.

Evaluating Restricted First-Order Counting Properties on Nowhere Dense Classes and Beyond

Abstract:It is known that first-order logic with some counting extensions can be efficiently evaluated on graph classes with bounded expansion, where depth-$r$ minors have constant density. More precisely, the formulas are $\exists x_1 ... x_k \#y \varphi(x_1,...,x_k, y)>N$, where $\varphi$ is an FO-formula. If $\varphi$ is quantifier-free, we can extend this result to nowhere dense graph classes with an almost linear FPT run time. Lifting this result further to slightly more general graph classes, namely almost nowhere dense classes, where the size of depth-$r$ clique minors is subpolynomial, is impossible unless FPT=W[1]. On the other hand, in almost nowhere dense classes we can approximate such counting formulas with a small additive error. Note those counting formulas are contained in FOC({<}) but not FOC1(P). In particular, it follows that partial covering problems, such as partial dominating set, have fixed parameter algorithms on nowhere dense graph classes with almost linear running time.

Towards Testing Monotonicity of Distributions Over General Posets

Abstract:In this work, we consider the sample complexity required for testing the monotonicity of distributions over partial orders. A distribution $p$ over a poset is monotone if, for any pair of domain elements $x$ and $y$ such that $x \preceq y$, $p(x) \leq p(y)$. To understand the sample complexity of this problem, we introduce a new property called bigness over a finite domain, where the distribution is $T$-big if the minimum probability for any domain element is at least $T$. We establish a lower bound of $\Omega(n/\log n)$ for testing bigness of distributions on domains of size $n$. We then build on these lower bounds to give $\Omega(n/\log{n})$ lower bounds for testing monotonicity over a matching poset of size $n$ and significantly improved lower bounds over the hypercube poset. We give sublinear sample complexity bounds for testing bigness and for testing monotonicity over the matching poset. We then give a number of tools for analyzing upper bounds on the sample complexity of the monotonicity testing problem.

Abstract:We generalize the celebrated isoperimetric inequality of Khot, Minzer, and Safra (SICOMP 2018) for Boolean functions to the case of real‐valued functions f:{0,1}d→R . Our main tool in the proof of the generalized inequality is a new Boolean decomposition that represents every real‐valued function f over an arbitrary partially ordered domain as a collection of Boolean functions over the same domain, roughly capturing the distance of f to monotonicity and the structure of violations of f to monotonicity. We apply our generalized isoperimetric inequality to improve algorithms for testing monotonicity and approximating the distance to monotonicity for real‐valued functions. Our tester for monotonicity has query complexity O ̃(min(rd,d)) , where r is the size of the image of the input function. (The best previously known tester makes O(d) queries, as shown by Chakrabarty and Seshadhri (STOC 2013).) Our tester is nonadaptive and has 1‐sided error. We prove a matching lower bound for nonadaptive, 1‐sided error testers for monotonicity. We also show that the distance to monotonicity of real‐valued functions that are α ‐far from monotone can be approximated nonadaptively within a factor of O(dlogd) with query complexity polynomial in 1/α and the dimension d . This query complexity is nearly optimal for nonadaptive algorithms even for the special case of Boolean functions (The best previously known distance approximation algorithm for real‐valued functions, by Fattal and Ron (TALG 2010) achieves O(dlogr) ‐approximation.).

Abstract:The problem of counting the number of models of a given Boolean formula has numerous applications, including computing the leakage of deterministic programs in Quantitative Information Flow. Model counting is a hard, #P-complete problem. For this reason, many approximate counters have been developed in the last decade, offering formal guarantees of confidence and accuracy. A popular approach is based on the idea of using random XOR constraints to, roughly, successively halving the solution set until no model is left: this is checked by invocations to a SAT solver. The effectiveness of this procedure hinges on the ability of the SAT solver to deal with XOR constraints, which in turn crucially depends on the length of such constraints. We study to what extent one can employ sparse, hence short, constraints, keeping guarantees of correctness. We show that the resulting bounds are closely related to the geometry of the set of models, in particular to the minimum Hamming distance between models. We evaluate our theoretical results on a few concrete formulae. Based on our findings, we finally discuss possible directions for improvements of the current state of the art in approximate model counting.

Toggling, rowmotion, and homomesy on interval-closed sets

Abstract:Interval-closed sets of a poset are a natural superset of order ideals. We initiate the study of interval-closed sets of finite posets from enumerative and dynamical perspectives. In particular, we use the generalized toggle group to define rowmotion on interval-closed sets as a product of these toggles. Our main theorem is an intricate global characterization of rowmotion on interval-closed sets, which we show is equivalent to the toggling definition. We also study specific posets; we enumerate interval-closed sets of ordinal sums of antichains, completely describe their rowmotion orbits, and prove a homomesy result involving the signed cardinality statistic. Finally, we study interval-closed sets of product of chains posets, proving further results about enumeration and homomesy.

The Simultaneous Interval Number: A New Width Parameter that Measures the Similarity to Interval Graphs

Abstract:We propose a novel way of generalizing the class of interval graphs, via a graph width parameter called the simultaneous interval number. This parameter is related to the simultaneous representation problem for interval graphs and defined as the smallest number $d$ of labels such that the graph admits a $d$-simultaneous interval representation, that is, an assignment of intervals and label sets to the vertices such that two vertices are adjacent if and only if the corresponding intervals, as well as their label sets, intersect. We show that this parameter is $\mathsf{NP}$-hard to compute and give several bounds for the parameter, showing in particular that it is sandwiched between pathwidth and linear mim-width. For classes of graphs with bounded parameter values, assuming that the graph is equipped with a simultaneous interval representation with a constant number of labels, we give $\mathsf{FPT}$ algorithms for the clique, independent set, and dominating set problems, and hardness results for the independent dominating set and coloring problems. The $\mathsf{FPT}$ results for independent set and dominating set are for the simultaneous interval number plus solution size. In contrast, both problems are known to be $\mathsf{W}[1]$-hard for linear mim-width plus solution size.
