Abstract:A probability distribution over the Boolean cube is monotone if flipping the value of a coordinate from zero to one can only increase the probability of an element. Given samples of an unknown monotone distribution over the Boolean cube, we give (to our knowledge) the first algorithm that learns an approximation of the distribution in statistical distance using a number of samples that is sublinear in the domain. To do this, we develop a structural lemma describing monotone probability distributions. The structural lemma has further implications to the sample complexity of basic testing tasks for analyzing monotone probability distributions over the Boolean cube: We use it to give nontrivial upper bounds on the tasks of estimating the distance of a monotone distribution to uniform and of estimating the support size of a monotone distribution. In the setting of monotone probability distributions over the Boolean cube, our algorithms are the first to have sample complexity lower than known lower bounds for the same testing tasks on arbitrary (not necessarily monotone) probability distributions. One further consequence of our learning algorithm is an improved sample complexity for the task of testing whether a distribution on the Boolean cube is monotone.

Abstract:The problem of counting all inequivalent monotone Boolean functions of nine variables is considered. We solve the problem using known algorithms and deriving new ones when necessary. We describe methods to count fixed points in sets of all monotone Boolean functions under a given permutation of input variables. With these techniques as a basis, we tabulate the cardinalities of these sets for nine variables. By applying Burnside’s lemma and the numbers obtained, we calculate the number of inequivalent monotone Boolean functions of 9 variables, which equals 789,204,635,842,035,040,527,740,846,300,252,680.

Abstract:We study the number of queries needed to identify a monotone Boolean function $f:\{0,1\}^n \rightarrow \{0,1\}$. A query consists of a 0-1-sequence, and the answer is the value of $f$ on that sequence. It is well-known that the number of queries needed is $\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}+\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor+1}$ in general. Here we study a variant where $f$ has $k$ ``reasons'' to be 1, i.e., its disjunctive normal form has $k$ conjunctions if the redundant conjunctions are deleted. This problem is equivalent to identifying an upfamily in $2^{[n]}$ that has exactly $k$ minimal members. We find the asymptotics on the number of queries needed for fixed $k$. We also study the non-adaptive version of the problem, where the queries are asked at the same time, and determine the exact number of queries for most values of $k$ and $n$.

Abstract:International Journal on Artificial Intelligence Tools, Volume 33, Issue 03, May 2024. A neuron with binary inputs and a binary output represents a Boolean function. Our goal is to extract this Boolean function into a tractable representation that will facilitate the explanation and formal verification of a neuron's behavior. Unfortunately, extracting a neuron's Boolean function is in general an NP-hard problem. However, it was recently shown that prime implicants of this Boolean function can be enumerated efficiently, with only polynomial time delay. Building on this result, we first propose a best-first search algorithm that is able to incrementally tighten the inner and outer bounds of a neuron's Boolean function. Second, we show that these bounds correspond to truncated prime-implicant covers of the Boolean function. Next, we show how these bounds can be propagated in an elementary class of neural networks. Finally, we provide case studies that highlight our ability to bound the behavior of neurons.

Operator expressions are employed as our tools to study the iterative behaviors and properties of these networks. Abstract:In 1845, Bertrand conjectured that twice any prime strictly exceeds the next prime. Tchebichef proved Bertrand's postulate in 1850. In 1934, Ishikawa proved a stronger result: the sum of any two consecutive primes strictly exceeds the next prime, except for the only equality $2+3=5$. This observation is a special case of a more general result, perhaps not previously noticed: if $p_n$ denotes the $n$th prime, $n=1, 2, \ldots$, with $p_1=2, p_2=3, \ldots$, and if $c_1, \ldots, c_g$ are nonnegative integers (not necessarily distinct), and $d_1, \ldots, d_h$ are positive integers (not necessarily distinct), and $g>h\ge 1$, then there exists a positive integer $N$ such that $p_{n-c_1}+p_{n-c_2}+\cdots +p_{n-c_g}>p_{n+d_1}+\cdots +p_{n+d_h}$ for all $n\ge N$. We prove this result using only the prime number theorem. For any instance of this result, we sketch a way to find the least possible $N$. We give some numerical results and unanswered questions.

Abstract:Extending Sparks's theorem, we determine the cardinality of the lattice of $(C_1,C_2)$-clonoids of Boolean functions in the cases where the target clone $C_2$ is the clone of projections. Moreover, we explicitly describe the $(C_1,C_2)$-clonoids of Boolean functions in the cases where the source clone $C_1$ is one of the four clones of monotone functions or contains the discriminator function.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe a sub-maximal degree monomial test and propose a heuristic algorithm for searching favourable cubes, for testing Boolean functions formed by stream ciphers. We apply them to Trivium, and mount a distinguisher on Trivium reduced to 839 rounds with 2 37 complexity, which is so far the best distinguisher on reduced Trivium.
On the Number of Quantifiers Needed to Define Boolean Functions

Abstract:The number of quantifiers needed to express first-order (FO) properties is captured by two-player combinatorial games called multi-structural games. We analyze these games on binary strings with an ordering relation, using a technique we call parallel play, which significantly reduces the number of quantifiers needed in many cases. Ordered structures such as strings have historically been notoriously difficult to analyze in the context of these and similar games. Nevertheless, in this paper, we provide essentially tight upper bounds on the number of quantifiers needed to characterize different-sized subsets of strings. The results immediately give bounds on the number of quantifiers necessary to define several different classes of Boolean functions. One of our results is analogous to Lupanov's upper bounds on circuit size and formula size in propositional logic: we show that every Boolean function on $n$-bit inputs can be defined by a FO sentence having $(1 + \varepsilon)n\log(n) + O(1)$ quantifiers, and that this is essentially tight. We reduce this number to $(1 + \varepsilon)\log(n) + O(1)$ when the Boolean function in question is sparse.

Abstract:Boolean networks constitute relevant mathematical models to study the behaviours of genetic and signalling networks. These networks define regulatory influences between molecular nodes, each being associated to a Boolean variable and a regulatory (local) function specifying its dynamical behaviour depending on its regulators. However, existing data is mostly insufficient to adequately parametrise a model, that is to uniquely define a regulatory function for each node. With the intend to support model parametrisation, this paper presents results on the set of Boolean functions compatible with a given regulatory structure, i.e. the partially ordered set of monotone non-degenerate Boolean functions. More precisely, we present original rules to obtain the direct neighbours of any function of this set. Besides a theoretical interest, presented results will enable the development of more efficient methods for Boolean network synthesis and revision, benefiting from the progressive exploration of the vicinity of regulatory functions.

Abstract:We study the query complexity on slices of Boolean functions. Among other results we show that there exists a Boolean function for which we need to query all but 7 input bits to compute its value, even if we know beforehand that the number of 0's and 1's in the input are the same, i.e., when our input is from the middle slice. This answers a question of Byramji. Our proof is non-constructive, but we also propose a concrete candidate function that might have the above property. Our results are related to certain natural discrepancy type questions that, somewhat surprisingly, have not been studied before.

MacMahonesque partition functions detect sets related to primes

Abstract:Recent work by Craig, van Ittersum, and Ono constructs explicit expressions in the partition functions of MacMahon that detect the prime numbers. Furthermore, they define generalizations, the MacMahonesque functions, and prove there are infinitely many such expressions in these functions. Here, we show how to modify and adapt their construction to detect cubes of primes as well as primes in arithmetic progressions.

Abstract:In this note, we use integral binary cubic forms to study the rational cube sum problem. We prove (unconditionally) that for any positive integer $d$, infinitely many primes in each of the residue classes $ 1 \pmod {9d}$ as well as $ -1 \pmod {9d}$, are sums of two rational cubes. Among other results, we prove that every non-zero residue class $a \pmod {q}$, for any prime $q$, contains infinitely many primes which are sums of two rational cubes. Further, for an arbitrary integer $N$, we show there are infinitely many primes $p$ in each of the residue classes $ 8 \pmod 9$ and $1 \pmod 9$, such that $Np$ is a sum of two rational cubes.

Abstract:We pose 100 new conjectures on representations involving primes or related things, which might interest number theorists and stimulate further research. Below are five typical examples: (i) For any positive integer n, there exists $k\in \{0,\ldots ,n\}$ such that $n+k$ and $n+k^2$ are both prime. (ii) Each integer $n>1$ can be written as $x+y$ with $x,y\in \{1,2,3,\ldots \}$ such that $x+ny$ and $x^2+ny^2$ are both prime. (iii) For any rational number $r>0$, there are distinct primes $q_1,\ldots ,q_k$ with $r=\sum _{j=1}^k1/(q_j-1)$. (iv) Every $n=4,5,\ldots $ can be written as $p+q$, where p is a prime with $p-1$ and $p+1$ both practical, and q is either prime or practical. (v) Any positive rational number can be written as m/n, where m and n are positive integers with $p_m+p_n$ a square (or $\pi (m)\pi (n)$ a positive square), $p_k$ is the kth prime and $\pi (x)$ is the prime-counting function.

Abstract:Boolean network models have gained popularity in computational systems biology over the last dozen years. Many of these networks use canalizing Boolean functions, which has led to increased interest in the study of these functions. The canalizing depth of a function describes how many canalizing variables can be recursively “picked off”, until a non-canalizing function remains. In this paper, we show how every Boolean function has a unique algebraic form involving extended monomial layers and a well-defined core polynomial. This generalizes recent work on the algebraic structure of nested canalizing functions, and it yields a stratification of all Boolean functions by their canalizing depth. As a result, we obtain closed formulas for the number of n-variable Boolean functions with depth k, which simultaneously generalizes enumeration formulas for canalizing, and nested canalizing functions.
