Abstract:In 2012, Lévêque, Maffray, and Trotignon conjectured that each graph $G$ that contains no induced subdivision of $K_4$ is $4$-colorable. In this paper, we prove that this conjecture holds when $G$ contains a $K_{1,2,3}$.

Abstract:We say that a graph $G$ has an odd $K_4$-subdivision if some subgraph of $G$ is isomorphic to a $K_4$-subdivision and whose faces are all odd holes of $G$. For a number $\ell\geq 2$, let $\mathcal{G}_{\ell}$ denote the family of graphs which have girth $2\ell+1$ and have no odd hole with length greater than $2\ell+1$. Wu, Xu and Xu conjectured that every graph in $\bigcup_{\ell\geq2}\mathcal{G}_{\ell}$ is $3$-colorable. Recently, Chudnovsky et al. and Wu et al., respectively, proved that every graph in $\mathcal{G}_2$ and $\mathcal{G}_3$ is $3$-colorable. In this paper, we prove that no $4$-vertex-critical graph in $\bigcup_{\ell\geq5}\mathcal{G}_{\ell}$ has an odd $K_4$-subdivision. Using this result, Chen proved that all graphs in $\bigcup_{\ell\geq5}\mathcal{G}_{\ell}$ are $3$-colorable.

Abstract:In 1972, Mader showed that every graph without a 3-connected subgraph is 4-degenerate and thus 5-colorable}. We show that the number 5 of colors can be replaced by 4, which is best possible.

Abstract:For a number $l\geq 2$, let ${\cal{G}}_l$ denote the family of graphs which have girth $2l+1$ and have no odd hole with length greater than $2l+1$. Wu, Xu and Xu conjectured that every graph in $\bigcup_{l\geq 2} {\cal{G}}_{l}$ is $3$-colorable. Chudnovsky et al., Wu et al., and Chen showed that every graph in ${\cal{G}}_2$, ${\cal{G}}_3$ and $\bigcup_{l\geq 5} {\cal{G}}_{l}$ is $3$-colorable respectively. In this paper, we prove that every graph in ${\cal{G}}_4$ is $3$-colorable. This confirms Wu, Xu and Xu's conjecture.

Abstract:The Borodin-Kostochka Conjecture states that for a graph $G$, if $\Delta(G)\geq9$, then $\chi(G)\leq\max\{\Delta(G)-1,\omega(G)\}$. We use $P_t$ and $C_t$ to denote a path and a cycle on $t$ vertices, respectively. Let $C=v_1v_2v_3v_4v_5v_1$ be an induced $C_5$. A {\em $C_5^+$} is a graph obtained from $C$ by adding a $C_3=xyzx$ and a $P_2=t_1t_2$ such that (1) $x$ and $y$ are both exactly adjacent to $v_1,v_2,v_3$ in $V(C)$, $z$ is exactly adjacent to $v_2$ in $V(C)$, $t_1$ is exactly adjacent to $v_4,v_5$ in $V(C)$ and $t_2$ is exactly adjacent to $v_1,v_4,v_5$ in $V(C)$, (2) $t_1$ is exactly adjacent to $z$ in $\{x,y,z\}$ and $t_2$ has no neighbors in $\{x,y,z\}$. In this paper, we show that the Borodin-Kostochka Conjecture holds for ($P_6,C_4,H$)-free graphs, where $H\in \{K_7,C_5^+\}$. This generalizes some results of Gupta and Pradhan in \cite{GP21,GP24}.

Abstract:A (k, r)-coloring of a graph G is a proper k-vertex coloring of G such that the neighbors of each vertex of degree d will receive at least min{d, r} different colors. The r-hued chromatic number, denoted by χr (G), is the smallest integer k for which a graph G has a (k, r)-coloring. Let f ( r ) = r + 3 if 1 ≤ r ≤ 2, f ( r ) = r + 5 if 3 ≤ r ≤ 7 and f ( r ) = ⌊ 3 r / 2 ⌋ + 1 if r ≥ 8. In [Discrete Math., 315-316 (2014) 47-52], an extended conjecture of Wegner is proposed that if G is planar, then χr (G) ≤ f(r); and this conjecture was verified for K 4-minor free graphs. For an integer n ≥ 4, let K 4(n) be the set of all subdivisions of K 4 on n vertices. We obtain decompositions of K 4(n)-minor free graphs with n ∈ {5, 6, 7}. The decompositions are applied to show that if G is a K 4(7)-minor free graph, then χr (G) ≤ f(r) if and only if G is not isomorphic to K 6.

4-Chromatic Graphs Have At Least 4 Cycles of Length $0 \bmod 3$

Abstract:A 2018 conjecture of Brewster, McGuinness, Moore, and Noel asserts that for $k \ge 3$, if a graph has chromatic number greater than $k$, then it contains at least as many cycles of length $0 \bmod k$ as the complete graph on $k+1$ vertices. Our main result confirms this in the $k=3$ case by showing every $4$-critical graph contains at least $4$ cycles of length $0 \bmod 3$, and that $K_4$ is the unique such graph achieving the minimum. We make progress on the general conjecture as well, showing that $(k+1)$-critical graphs with minimum degree $k$ have at least as many cycles of length $0\bmod r$ as $K_{k+1}$, provided $k+1 \ne 0 \bmod r$. We also show that $K_{k+1}$ uniquely minimizes the number of cycles of length $1\bmod k$ among all $(k+1)$-critical graphs, strengthening a recent result of Moore and West and extending it to the $k=3$ case.

2-distance 4-coloring of planar subcubic graphs with girth at least 21

Abstract:A $2$-distance $k$-coloring of a graph is a proper vertex $k$-coloring where vertices at distance at most 2 cannot share the same color. We prove the existence of a $2$-distance $4$-coloring for planar subcubic graphs with girth at least 21. We also show a construction of a planar subcubic graph of girth 11 that is not $2$-distance $4$-colorable.

Abstract:A tree-k-coloring of a graph G is a k-coloring of G such that the subgraph induced by the union of any two color classes is a tree. G is purely tree-k-colorable if the chromatic number of G is k and any k-coloring of G is a tree-k-coloring. Xu [16] conjectured that there exist only two purely tree-4-colorable 4-connected maximal planar graphs. In this paper, we construct an infinite family of purely tree-colorable 4-connected maximal planar graphs, called dumbbell-maximal planar graphs, which disprove Xu's conjecture. Moreover, we give the enumeration of dumbbell-maximal planar graphs and propose a conjecture on such graphs. It turns out that the conjecture implies naturally the uniquely 4-colorable planar graph conjecture.

Abstract:Hu and Li investigate the signed graph version of Erd$\ddot{\mathrm{o}}$s problem: Is there a constant $c$ such that every signed planar graph without $k$-cycles, where $4\leq k\leq c$, is $3$-colorable and prove that each signed planar graph without cycles of length from 4 to 8 is 3-colorable. We give a very short and simple proof of this result and improve it, based on a recent observation.

Abstract:In 1971, Tomescu conjectured [Le nombre des graphes connexes $k$-chromatiques minimaux aux sommets étiquetés, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris 273 (1971), 1124--1126] that every connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $\chi(G) = k \geq 4$ has at most $k!(k-1)^{n-k}$ $k$-colourings, where equality holds if and only if the graph is formed from $K_k$ by repeatedly adding leaves. In this note we prove (a strengthening of) the conjecture of Tomescu when $k=5$.

Abstract:Let $H$ be a 2-regular graph and let $G$ be obtained from $H$ by gluing in vertex-disjoint copies of $K_4$. The "cycles plus $K_4$'s" problem is to show that $G$ is 4-colourable; this is a special case of the \emph{Strong Colouring Conjecture}. In this paper we reduce the "cycles plus $K_4$'s" problem to a specific 3-colourability problem. In the 3-colourability problem, vertex-disjoint triangles are glued (in a limited way) onto a disjoint union of triangles and paths of length at most 12, and we ask for 3-colourability of the resulting graph.

Abstract:A house is the graph that consists of an induced 4-vertex cycle and a single vertex with precisely two adjacent neighbors on the cycle.
