Abstract:DP-coloring is a generalization of list coloring, which was introduced by Dvořák and Postle [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 129 (2018) 38--54]. Zhang [Inform. Process. Lett. 113 (9) (2013) 354--356] showed that every planar graph with neither adjacent triangles nor 5-, 6-, 9-cycles is 3-choosable. Liu et al. [Discrete Math. 342 (2019) 178--189] showed that every planar graph without 4-, 5-, 6- and 9-cycles is DP-3-colorable. In this paper, we show that every planar graph with neither adjacent triangles nor 5-, 6-, 9-cycles is DP-3-colorable, which generalizes these results. Yu et al. gave three Bordeaux-type results by showing that (i) every planar graph with the distance of triangles at least three and no 4-, 5-cycles is DP-3-colorable; (ii) every planar graph with the distance of triangles at least two and no 4-, 5-, 6-cycles is DP-3-colorable; (iii) every planar graph with the distance of triangles at least two and no 5-, 6-, 7-cycles is DP-3-colorable. We also give two Bordeaux-type results in the last section: (i) every plane graph with neither 5-, 6-, 8-cycles nor triangles at distance less than two is DP-3-colorable; (ii) every plane graph with neither 4-, 5-, 7-cycles nor triangles at distance less than two is DP-3-colorable.

Abstract:The concept of DP-coloring of a graph is a generalization of list coloring introduced by Dvořák and Postle (J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 129 , 38–54, 2018). Multiple DP-coloring of graphs, as a generalization of multiple list coloring, was first studied by Bernshteyn, Kostochka and Zhu (J. Graph Theory 93 , 203–221, 2020). This paper proves that planar graphs without 3-cycles and normally adjacent 4-cycles are (7 m , 2 m )-DP-colorable for every integer m . As a consequence, the strong fractional choice number of any planar graph without 3-cycles and normally adjacent 4-cycles is at most 7/2.

Abstract:DP-coloring, also known as correspondence coloring, is introduced by Dvo{ř}{á}k and Postle. It is a generalization of list coloring. In this paper, we show that every connected toroidal graph without triangles adjacent to $5$-cycles has minimum degree at most three unless it is a 2-connected $4$-regular graph with Euler characteristic $\epsilon(G) = 0$. Consequently, every toroidal graph without triangles adjacent to $5$-cycles is DP-$4$-colorable. In the final, we show that every planar graph without two certain subgraphs is DP-$4$-colorable. As immediate consequences, (i) every planar graph without $3$-cycles adjacent to $4$-cycles is DP-$4$-colorable; (ii) every planar graph without $3$-cycles adjacent to $5$-cycles is DP-$4$-colorable; (iii) every planar graph without $4$-cycles adjacent to $5$-cycles is DP-$4$-colorable.

Abstract:Hu and Li investigate the signed graph version of Erd$\ddot{\mathrm{o}}$s problem: Is there a constant $c$ such that every signed planar graph without $k$-cycles, where $4\leq k\leq c$, is $3$-colorable and prove that each signed planar graph without cycles of length from 4 to 8 is 3-colorable. We give a very short and simple proof of this result and improve it, based on a recent observation.

Abstract:Two cycles are {\em adjacent} if they have an edge in common. Suppose that $G$ is a planar graph, for any two adjacent cycles $C_{1}$ and $C_{2}$, we have $|C_{1}| + |C_{2}| \geq 11$, in particular, when $|C_{1}| = 5$, $|C_{2}| \geq 7$. We show that the graph $G$ is 3-colorable.

Abstract:An acyclic colouring of a graph is a proper colouring of the graph, for which every cycle uses at least three colours. In this paper, we describe a method for constructing all 4-connected acyclically 4-colourable planar triangulations that have exactly four odd-vertices, except the ones that contain no adjacent odd-vertices. Unlike previous operations, our method successfully establishes a connection with (acyclic) 4-colourings. Moreover, we discuss a special class of graphs, called diamond triangulations, and give a necessary and sufficient condition for a diamond triangulation to be acyclically 4-colourable.

Abstract:A graph G is uniquely k-colourable if the chromatic number of G is k and G has only one k-colouring up to permutation of the colours. Aksionov [On uniquely 3-colorable planar graphs, Discrete Math. 20 (1977), pp. 209-216] conjectured that every uniquely 3-colourable planar graph with at least four vertices has two adjacent triangles. However, in the same year, Melnikov and Steinberg [L.S. Mel'nikov and R. Steinberg, One counter example for two conjectures on three coloring, Discrete Math. 20 (1977), pp. 203-206.] disproved the conjecture by constructing a counterexample. In this paper, we prove that if a uniquely 3-colourable planar graph G has at most 4 triangles then G has two adjacent triangles. Furthermore, for any k > 5, we construct a uniquely 3-colourable planar graph with k triangles and without adjacent triangles.

Abstract:An acyclic coloring of a graph is a proper coloring of the graph, for which every cycle uses at least three colors. Let G4 be the set of maximal planar graphs of minimum degree 4, such that each graph in G4 contains exactly four odd-vertices and the subgraph induced by the four odd-vertices contains a quadrilateral. In this article, we show that every acyclic 4-coloring of a maximal planar graph with exact four odd-vertices is locally equitable with regard to its four odd-vertices. Moreover, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a graph in G4 to be acyclically 4-colorable, and give an enumeration of the acyclically 4-colorable graphs in G4.

Abstract:A graph G is uniquely k-colorable if the chromatic number of G is k and G has only one k-coloring up to the permutation of the colors. For a plane graph G, two faces f 1 and f 2 of G are adjacent ( i , j )-faces if d ( f 1 ) = i, d ( f 2 ) = j, and f 1 and f 2 have a common edge, where d ( f ) is the degree of a face f. In this paper, we prove that every uniquely three-colorable plane graph has adjacent ( 3 , k )-faces, where k ≤ 5. The bound of five for k is the best possible. Furthermore, we prove that there exists a class of uniquely three-colorable plane graphs having neither adjacent ( 3 , i )-faces nor adjacent ( 3 , j )-faces, where i , j are fixed in { 3 , 4 , 5 } and i ≠ j. One of our constructions implies that there exists an infinite family of edge-critical uniquely three-colorable plane graphs with n vertices and 7 3 n - 14 3 edges, where n ( ≥ 11 ) is odd and n ≡ 2 ( mod 3 ).

Abstract:Every graph G=(V, E) considered in this paper consists of a finite set V of vertices and a finite set E of edges, together with an incidence function that associates each edge e ∈ E of G with an unordered pair of vertices of G which are called the ends of the edge e. A graph is said to be a planar graph if it can be drawn in the plane so that its edges intersect only at their ends. A proper k-vertex-coloring of a graph G=(V, E) is a mapping c : V⟶S (S is a set of k colors) such that no two adjacent vertices are assigned the same colors. The famous Four Color Theorem states that a planar graph has a proper vertex-coloring with four colors. However, the current known proof for the Four Color Theorem is computer assisted. In addition, the correctness of the proof is still lengthy and complicated. In 2010, a simple O(n 2) time algorithm was provided to 4-color a 3-colorable planar graph. In this paper, we give an improved linear-time algorithm to either output a proper 4-coloring of G or conclude that G is not 3-colorable when an arbitrary planar graph G is given. Using this algorithm, we can get the proper 4-colorings of 3-colorable planar graphs, planar graphs with maximum degree at most five, and claw-free planar graphs.
Three-edge-coloring projective planar cubic graphs: A generalization of the Four Color Theorem

Abstract:We prove that every cyclically 4-edge-connected cubic graph that can be embedded in the projective plane, with the single exception of the Petersen graph, is 3-edge-colorable. In other words, the only (non-trivial) snark that can be embedded in the projective plane is the Petersen graph. This implies that a 2-connected cubic (multi)graph that can be embedded in the projective plane is not 3-edge-colorable if and only if it can be obtained from the Petersen graph by replacing each vertex by a 2-edge-connected planar cubic (multi)graph. This result is a nontrivial generalization of the Four Color Theorem, and its proof requires a combination of extensive computer verification and computer-free extension of existing proofs on colorability. An unexpected consequence of this result is a coloring-flow duality statement for the projective plane: A cubic graph embedded in the projective plane is 3-edge-colorable if and only if its dual multigraph is 5-vertex-colorable. Moreover, we show that a 2-edge connected graph embedded in the projective plane admits a nowhere-zero 4-flow unless it is Peteren-like (in which case it does not admit nowhere-zero 4-flows). This proves a strengthening of the Tutte 4-flow conjecture for graphs on the projective plane. Some of our proofs require extensive computer verification. The necessary source codes, together with the input and output files and the complete set of more than 6000 reducible configurations are available on Github (this https URL) which can be considered as an Addendum to this paper. Moreover, we provide pseudocodes for all our computer verifications.

Abstract:An edge coloring of a graph G is to color all its edges such that adjacent edges receive different colors. It is acyclic if the subgraph induced by any two colors does not contain a cycle. Fiamcik (Math Slovaca 28:139-145, 1978) and Alon et al. (J Graph Theory 37:157-167, 2001) conjectured that every simple graph with maximum degree is acyclically edge -colorable — the well-known acyclic edge coloring conjecture. Despite many major breakthroughs and minor improvements, the conjecture remains open even for planar graphs. In this paper, we prove that planar graphs are acyclically edge -colorable. Our proof has two main steps: Using discharging methods, we first show that every non-trivial planar graph contains a local structure in one of the eight characterized groups; we then deal with each local structure to color the edges in the graph acyclically using no more than colors by an induction on the number of edges.
