Abstract:It is known that Total Coloring Conjecture (TCC) was verified for planar graphs with maximum degree Δ≠6. In this paper, we prove that TCC holds for planar graphs G with Δ(G)=6, if G does not contain any subgraph isomorphic to a 4-fan.

Abstract:Vizing’s planar graph conjecture remains open for planar graphs with maximum degree 6. In this note, we prove that if each triangle of a planar graph G with maximum degree 6 has a vertex incident with only one triangle, then the chromatic index of G is 6 which means that G is of class one.

Abstract:Pilsniak and Woźniak put forward the concept of neighbor sum distinguishing (NSD) total coloring and conjectured that any graph with maximum degree Δ admits an NSD total (Δ + 3)-coloring in 2015. In 2016, Qu et al. showed that the list version of the conjecture holds for any planar graph with Δ ≥ 13. In this paper, we prove that any planar graph with Δ Δ 7 but without 6-cycles satisfies the list version of the conjecture.

Abstract:A well-known theorem due to Vizing states that every graph with maximum degree Δ is Δ- or ( Δ + 1 )-edge-colorable. Recently, Behr extended the concept of edge coloring in a natural way to signed graphs. He also proved that an analogue of Vizing's Theorem holds for all signed graphs. Adopting Behr's definition, Zhang et al. proved that a signed planar graph G with maximum degree Δ is Δ-edge-colorable if either Δ ≥ 10 or Δ ∈ { 8 , 9 } and G contains no adjacent triangles. They also proposed the conjecture that every signed planar graph with Δ ≥ 6 is Δ-edge-colorable, as a generalization of Vizing's Planar Graph Conjecture. In this paper, we prove that every signed planar graph with Δ ≥ 8 is Δ-edge-colorable.

Abstract:The Total Coloring Conjecture (TCC) states that every simple graph G is totally (Δ+2)-colorable, where Δ denotes the maximum degree of G. In this paper, we prove that TCC holds for dumbbell maximal planar graphs. Especially, we divide the dumbbell maximal planar graphs into three categories according to the maximum degree: J9, I-dumbbell maximal planar graphs and II-dumbbell maximal planar graphs. We give the necessary and sufficient condition for I-dumbbell maximal planar graphs, and prove that any I-dumbbell maximal planar graph is totally 8-colorable. Moreover, a linear time algorithm is proposed to compute a total (Δ+2)-coloring for any I-dumbbell maximal planar graph.

Abstract:For an edge-colored graph, its minimum color degree is the minimum number of distinct colors appearing on the edges incident with a vertex, and its maximum monochromatic degree is the maximum number of edges with the same color incident with a vertex. A cycle in an edge-colored graph is called properly colored if any two consecutive edges of the cycle have distinct colors. We investigate sufficient conditions in terms of the minimum color degree and maximum monochromatic degree for the existence of short properly colored cycles in edge-colored complete graphs. In particular, we obtain sharp results for the existence of properly colored C4's, and we characterize the extremal graphs for several known results on the existence of properly colored triangles. Moreover, we obtain sharp sufficient conditions guaranteeing that every vertex is contained in a properly colored triangle or C4, respectively.

Abstract:Graph coloring is an important tool in the study of optimization, computer science, network design, e.g., file transferring in a computer network, pattern matching, computation of Hessians matrix and so on. In this paper, we consider one important coloring, vertex coloring of a total graph, which is also called total coloring. We consider a planar graph G with maximum degree Δ(G) ≥ 8, and proved that if G contains no adjacent i, j-cycles with two chords for some i, j ∈ {5, 6, 7}, then G is total-(Δ + 1)-colorable.

Abstract:A neighbor sum distinguishing (NSD) total coloring ϕ of G is a proper total coloring of G such that ∑z∈EG(u)∪{u}ϕ(z)≠∑z∈EG(v)∪{v}ϕ(z)$$\sum\limits_{z \in {E_G}(u) \cup \{u\}} {\phi (z) \ne} \sum\limits_{z \in {E_G}(v) \cup \{v\}} {\phi (z)} $$ for each edge uv ∈ E(G), where EG(u) is the set of edges incident with a vertex u. In 2015, Pilśniak and Woźniak conjectured that every graph with maximum degree Δ has an NSD total (Δ + 3)-coloring. Recently, Yang et al. proved that the conjecture holds for planar graphs with Δ ≥ 10, and Qu et al. proved that the list version of the conjecture also holds for planar graphs with Δ ≥ 13. In this paper, we improve their results and prove that the list version of the conjecture holds for planar graphs with Δ ≥ 10.

Abstract:A totalk-coloring of a graph G is a coloring of V(G)@?E(G) using k colors such that no two adjacent or incident elements receive the same color. The total chromatic number @g^''(G) is the smallest integer k such that G has a total k-coloring. Let G be a planar graph with maximum degree @D(G) and without 6-cycles. In this paper, it is proved that @g^''(G)=@D(G)+1 if @D(G)=5 and G contains no 4-cycles, or @D(G)=6 and G contains no 5-cycles.

Abstract:A tree-coloring of a maximal planar graph is a proper vertex 4-coloring such that every bichromatic subgraph, induced by this coloring, is a tree. A maximal planar graph G is tree-colorable if G has a tree-coloring. In this article, we prove that a tree-colorable maximal planar graph G with δ(G)≥ 4 contains at least four odd-vertices. Moreover, for a tree-colorable maximal planar graph of minimum degree 4 that contains exactly four odd-vertices, we show that the subgraph induced by its four odd-vertices is not a claw and contains no triangles.

Abstract:The recursive maximal planar graphs can be obtained from K4, by embedding a 3-vertex in a triangular face continuously. A total k-coloring of a graph G is a coloring of its vertices and edges such that no two adjacent or incident elements receive the same color. The Total Coloring Conjecture, in short, TCC, states that every simple graph G is totally (Δ+2)-colorable, where Δ is the maximum degree of G. In this paper, we prove that TCC holds for recursive maximal planar graphs, especially, a main class of recursive maximal planar graphs, named (2,2)-recursive maximal planar graphs, are totally (Δ+1)-colorable. Moreover, we give linear time algorithms for total coloring of recursive maximal planar graphs and (2,2)-recursive maximal planar graphs, respectively.

Abstract:The \textit{square} of a graph $G$, denoted by $G^2$, is obtained from $G$ by adding an edge to connect every pair of vertices with a common neighbor in $G$. In this paper we prove that for every planar graph $G$ with maximum degree at most $5$, $G^2$ admits a proper vertex coloring using at most $17$ colors, which improves the upper bound $18$ recently obtained by Hou, Jin, Miao, and Zhao.

Abstract:Suppose that G is a planar graph with maximum degree @D and without intersecting 4-cycles, that is, no two cycles of length 4 have a common vertex. Let @g^''(G), @g\"l^'(G) and @g\"l^''(G) denote the total chromatic number, list edge chromatic number and list total chromatic number of G, respectively. In this paper, it is proved that @g^''(G)=@D+1 if @D=7, and @g\"l^'(G)=@D and @g\"l^''(G)=@D+1 if @D(G)=8. Furthermore, if G is a graph embedded in a surface of nonnegative characteristic, then our results also hold.

Abstract:The Four-Color Conjecture says that the chromatic number of planar graphs is not more than 4.Indeed,it suffices to prove that each maximal planar graph is 4-clorable.For this reason,since 1891 many scholars have been devoted to the research on such graphs from different points of view.In this paper,some of important results with regard to maximal planar graphs are to be reviewed and analyzed in detail,including the problems of degree sequence,Hamilton characteristic,chromatic polynomial,generating operation system,enumeration,flip operation, decomposition and covering,spanning tree,and some algorithms.Based on the understanding of the research status of the maximal planar graphs,we propose several problems on such graphs in connection with their colorings.These problems intend to reveal the relationship between the structures and the colorings of maximal planar graphs,which may be usful for further study on the Four-Color Problem.

Abstract:Let G be an edge-colored graph. The minimum color degree of G is the minimum number of different colors appearing on the edges incident with the vertices of G. In this paper, we study the existence of properly edge-colored cycles in (not necessarily properly) edge-colored complete graphs. Fujita and Magnant (2011) conjectured that in an edge-colored complete graph on n vertices with minimum color degree at least (n+1)∕2, each vertex is contained in a properly edge-colored cycle of length k, for all k with 3≤k≤n. They confirmed the conjecture for k=3 and k=4, and they showed that each vertex is contained in a properly edge-colored cycle of length at least 5 when n≥13, but even the existence of properly edge-colored Hamilton cycles is unknown (in complete graphs that satisfy the conditions of the conjecture). We prove a cycle extension result that implies that each vertex is contained in a properly edge-colored cycle of length at least the minimum color degree.

Abstract:An acyclic coloring of a graph is a proper coloring of the graph, for which every cycle uses at least three colors. Let G4 be the set of maximal planar graphs of minimum degree 4, such that each graph in G4 contains exactly four odd-vertices and the subgraph induced by the four odd-vertices contains a quadrilateral. In this article, we show that every acyclic 4-coloring of a maximal planar graph with exact four odd-vertices is locally equitable with regard to its four odd-vertices. Moreover, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a graph in G4 to be acyclically 4-colorable, and give an enumeration of the acyclically 4-colorable graphs in G4.

Abstract:Thomassen (J. Combin. Theory Ser B 128:192–218, 2018) showed that every subcubic planar graph has 2-distance chromatic number at most 7, which was originally conjectured by Wegner (graphs with given diameter and a coloring problem, University of Dortmund, preprint, 1977). In this note, we consider 3-distance colorings of this family of graphs, and prove that every subcubic planar graph has 3-distance chromatic number at most 17, and we conjecture that this number can be reduced to 12. In addition, we show that every planar graph with maximum degree at most has 3-distance chromatic number at most .
