Abstract:For a number $l\geq 2$, let ${\cal{G}}_l$ denote the family of graphs which have girth $2l+1$ and have no odd hole with length greater than $2l+1$. Wu, Xu and Xu conjectured that every graph in $\bigcup_{l\geq 2} {\cal{G}}_{l}$ is $3$-colorable. Chudnovsky et al., Wu et al., and Chen showed that every graph in ${\cal{G}}_2$, ${\cal{G}}_3$ and $\bigcup_{l\geq 5} {\cal{G}}_{l}$ is $3$-colorable respectively. In this paper, we prove that every graph in ${\cal{G}}_4$ is $3$-colorable. This confirms Wu, Xu and Xu's conjecture.

Abstract:A graph G is called (d1,…,dr)-colorable if its vertex set can be partitioned into r sets V1,…,Vr such that the maximum degree of the induced subgraph G[Vi] of G is at most di for i∈{1,…,r}. Steinberg conjectured that every planar graph without 4/5-cycles is (0, 0, 0)-colorable. Unfortunately, the conjecture does not hold and it has been proved that every planar graph without 4/5-cycles is (1, 1, 0)-colorable. When only two colors are allowed to use, it is known that some planar graphs without 4/5-cycles are not (1,k)-colorable for any k≥0 and every planar graph without 4/5-cycles is (3,4)-colorable or (2,6)-colorable. In this paper, we reduce the gap for 2-coloring by proving that every planar graph without 4/5-cycles is (3,3)-colorable.

Abstract:The Borodin-Kostochka Conjecture states that for a graph $G$, if $\Delta(G)\geq9$, then $\chi(G)\leq\max\{\Delta(G)-1,\omega(G)\}$. We use $P_t$ and $C_t$ to denote a path and a cycle on $t$ vertices, respectively. Let $C=v_1v_2v_3v_4v_5v_1$ be an induced $C_5$. A {\em $C_5^+$} is a graph obtained from $C$ by adding a $C_3=xyzx$ and a $P_2=t_1t_2$ such that (1) $x$ and $y$ are both exactly adjacent to $v_1,v_2,v_3$ in $V(C)$, $z$ is exactly adjacent to $v_2$ in $V(C)$, $t_1$ is exactly adjacent to $v_4,v_5$ in $V(C)$ and $t_2$ is exactly adjacent to $v_1,v_4,v_5$ in $V(C)$, (2) $t_1$ is exactly adjacent to $z$ in $\{x,y,z\}$ and $t_2$ has no neighbors in $\{x,y,z\}$. In this paper, we show that the Borodin-Kostochka Conjecture holds for ($P_6,C_4,H$)-free graphs, where $H\in \{K_7,C_5^+\}$. This generalizes some results of Gupta and Pradhan in \cite{GP21,GP24}.

Abstract:In 1971, Tomescu conjectured [Le nombre des graphes connexes $k$-chromatiques minimaux aux sommets étiquetés, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris 273 (1971), 1124--1126] that every connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $\chi(G) = k \geq 4$ has at most $k!(k-1)^{n-k}$ $k$-colourings, where equality holds if and only if the graph is formed from $K_k$ by repeatedly adding leaves. In this note we prove (a strengthening of) the conjecture of Tomescu when $k=5$.

Abstract:We say that a graph $G$ has an odd $K_4$-subdivision if some subgraph of $G$ is isomorphic to a $K_4$-subdivision and whose faces are all odd holes of $G$. For a number $\ell\geq 2$, let $\mathcal{G}_{\ell}$ denote the family of graphs which have girth $2\ell+1$ and have no odd hole with length greater than $2\ell+1$. Wu, Xu and Xu conjectured that every graph in $\bigcup_{\ell\geq2}\mathcal{G}_{\ell}$ is $3$-colorable. Recently, Chudnovsky et al. and Wu et al., respectively, proved that every graph in $\mathcal{G}_2$ and $\mathcal{G}_3$ is $3$-colorable. In this paper, we prove that no $4$-vertex-critical graph in $\bigcup_{\ell\geq5}\mathcal{G}_{\ell}$ has an odd $K_4$-subdivision. Using this result, Chen proved that all graphs in $\bigcup_{\ell\geq5}\mathcal{G}_{\ell}$ are $3$-colorable.

Abstract:We show that any minimal Cayley graph of a (finitely generated) generalized dihedral or nilpotent group has chromatic number at most 3, while 4 colors are sometimes necessary for soluble groups. On the other hand we construct graphs of unbounded chromatic number that admit a proper edge coloring such that each cycle has some color at least twice. The latter disproves a conjecture of Babai'78 that would have implied that all minimal Cayley graphs have bounded chromatic number -- a problem that remains open.

Abstract:We consider coloring problems inspired by the theory of anti-Ramsey / rainbow colorings that we generalize to a far extent. Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a hereditary family of graphs; i.e., if $H\in \mathcal{F}$ and $H'\subset H$ then also $H'\subset \mathcal{F}$. For a graph $G$ and any integer $n \geq |G|$, let $f(n,G|\mathcal{F})$ denote the smallest number $k$ of colors such that any edge coloring of $K_n$ with at least $k$ colors forces a copy of $G$ in which each color class induces a member of $\mathcal{F}$. The case $\mathcal{F} = \{K_2\}$ is the notorious anti-Ramsey / rainbow coloring problem introduced by Erdős, Simonovits and Sós in 1973. Using the $\mathcal{F}$-deck of $G$, $D(G|\mathcal{F}) = \{ H : H = G - D, \, D \in \mathcal{F}\}$, we define $\chi_\mathcal{F}(G) = \min \{ \chi(H) : H \in D(G|\mathcal{F}) \}$. The main theorem we prove is: Suppose $\mathcal{F}$ is a hereditary family of graphs, and let $G$ be a graph not a member of $\mathcal{F}$. (1) If $\chi_\mathcal{F}(G) \geq 3$, then $f(n, G |\mathcal{F}) = (1+o(1)) \, ex(n, K_{\chi_\mathcal{F}(G)})$. (2) Otherwise $f(n, G |\mathcal{F}) = o(n^2)$. Among the families covered by this theorem are: matchings, acyclic graphs, planar and outerplanar graphs, $d$-degenerate graphs, graphs with chromatic number at most $k$, graphs with bounded maximum degree, and many more. We supply many concrete examples to demonstrate the wide range of applications of the main theorem; the next result is a representative of these examples. For $p \geq 5$ and $\mathcal{F} = \{ tK_2 : t \geq 1 \}$, we have $f(n,K_p |\mathcal{F}) = (1+o(1)) \, ex(n, K_{\lceil p/2 \rceil})$; this means a properly colored copy of $K_p$. In other words, a certain number of colors forces nearly twice as large properly edge-colored complete subgraphs as rainbow ones.

Abstract:A wheel is a graph formed by a chordless cycle and a vertex that has at least three neighbors in the cycle. We prove that every 3-connected graph that does not contain a wheel as a subgraph is in fact minimally 3-connected. We give a new proof of a theorem of Thomassen and Toft: every graph that does not contain a wheel as a subgraph is 3-colorable.

Three-edge-coloring projective planar cubic graphs: A generalization of the Four Color Theorem

Abstract:We prove that every cyclically 4-edge-connected cubic graph that can be embedded in the projective plane, with the single exception of the Petersen graph, is 3-edge-colorable. In other words, the only (non-trivial) snark that can be embedded in the projective plane is the Petersen graph. This implies that a 2-connected cubic (multi)graph that can be embedded in the projective plane is not 3-edge-colorable if and only if it can be obtained from the Petersen graph by replacing each vertex by a 2-edge-connected planar cubic (multi)graph. This result is a nontrivial generalization of the Four Color Theorem, and its proof requires a combination of extensive computer verification and computer-free extension of existing proofs on colorability. An unexpected consequence of this result is a coloring-flow duality statement for the projective plane: A cubic graph embedded in the projective plane is 3-edge-colorable if and only if its dual multigraph is 5-vertex-colorable. Moreover, we show that a 2-edge connected graph embedded in the projective plane admits a nowhere-zero 4-flow unless it is Peteren-like (in which case it does not admit nowhere-zero 4-flows). This proves a strengthening of the Tutte 4-flow conjecture for graphs on the projective plane. Some of our proofs require extensive computer verification. The necessary source codes, together with the input and output files and the complete set of more than 6000 reducible configurations are available on Github (this https URL) which can be considered as an Addendum to this paper. Moreover, we provide pseudocodes for all our computer verifications.

Majority Colorings of Sparse Digraphs

Abstract:A majority coloring of a directed graph is a vertex-coloring in which every vertex has the same color as at most half of its out-neighbors. Kreutzer, Oum, Seymour, van der Zypen and Wood proved that every digraph has a majority $4$-coloring and conjectured that every digraph admits a majority $3$-coloring. They observed that the Local Lemma implies the conjecture for digraphs of large enough minimum out-degree if, crucially, the maximum in-degree is bounded by a(n exponential) function of the minimum out-degree. Our goal in this paper is to develop alternative methods that allow the verification of the conjecture for natural, broad digraph classes, without any restriction on the in-degrees. Among others, we prove the conjecture 1) for digraphs with chromatic number at most $6$ or dichromatic number at most $3$, and thus for all planar digraphs; and 2) for digraphs with maximum out-degree at most $4$. The benchmark case of $r$-regular digraphs remains open for $r \in [5,143]$. Our inductive proofs depend on loaded inductive statements about precoloring extensions of list-colorings. This approach also gives rise to stronger conclusions, involving the choosability version of majority coloring. We also give further evidence towards the existence of majority-$3$-colorings by showing that every digraph has a fractional majority 3.9602-coloring. Moreover we show that every digraph with large enough minimum out-degree has a fractional majority $(2+\varepsilon)$-coloring.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Computing, Volume 53, Issue 1, Page 111-145, February 2024. This is the first paper in a series whose goal is to give a polynomial-time algorithm for the 4-coloring problem and the 4-precoloring extension problem restricted to the class of graphs with no induced six-vertex path, thus proving a conjecture of Huang. Combined with previously known results, this completes the classification of the complexity of the 4-coloring problem for graphs with a connected forbidden induced subgraph. In this paper we give a polynomial-time algorithm that determines if a special kind of precoloring of a [math]-free graph has a precoloring extension, and constructs such an extension if one exists. Combined with the main result of the second paper of the series, this gives a complete solution to the problem.
