Abstract:This article foucuses on $(P_3\cup P_2,K_4)$-free graph. In this paper, we prove that if G is $(P_3\cup P_2,K_4)$-free, then $\chi(G)\le 7$. We then use our result to obtain the upper bound of order and chromatic number of $(4K_1,\overline{P_3\cup P_2},K_{\omega})$-free graph .

Abstract:For two vertex disjoint graphs $H$ and $F$, we use $H\cup F$ to denote the graph with vertex set $V(H)\cup V(F)$ and edge set $E(H)\cup E(F)$, and use $H+F$ to denote the graph with vertex set $V(H)\cup V(F)$ and edge set $E(H)\cup E(F)\cup\{xy\;|\; x\in V(H), y\in V(F)$$\}$. A $W_4$ is the graph $K_1+C_4$. In this paper, we prove that $\chi(G)\le 2\omega(G)$ if $G$ is a ($P_3\cup P_2, W_4$)-free graph. This bound is tight when $\omega =2$ and $3$, and improves the main result of Wang and Zhang. Also, this bound partially generalizes some results of Prashant {\em et al.}.

Abstract:A hereditary class $\cal G$ of graphs is {\em $\chi$-bounded} if there is a {\em $\chi$-binding function}, say $f$, such that $\chi(G)\le f(\omega(G))$ for every $G\in\cal G$, where $\chi(G)(\omega(G))$ denotes the chromatic (clique) number of $G$. It is known that for every $(P_3\cup P_2)$-free graph $G$, $\chi(G)\le \frac{1}{6}\omega(G)(\omega(G)+1)(\omega(G)+2)$ \cite{BA18}, and the class of $(2K_2, 3K_1)$-free graphs does not admit a linear $\chi$-binding function\cite{BBS19}. In this paper, we prove that (\romannumeral 1) $\chi(G)\le2\omega(G)$ if $G$ is ($P_3\cup P_2$, kite)-free, (\romannumeral 2) $\chi(G)\le\omega^2(G)$ if $G$ is ($P_3\cup P_2$, hammer)-free, (\romannumeral 3) $\chi(G)\le\frac{3\omega^2(G)+\omega(G)}{2}$ if $G$ is ($P_3\cup P_2, C_5$)-free. Furthermore, we also discuss $\chi$-binding functions for $(P_3\cup P_2, K_4)$-free graphs.

An optimal chromatic bound for the class of $\{P_3\cup 2K_1,\overline{P_3\cup 2K_1}\}$-free graphs

Abstract:In 1987, A. Gyárfás in his paper ``Problems from the world surrounding perfect graphs'' posed the problem of determining the smallest $\chi$-binding function for $\mathcal{G}(F,\overline{F})$, when $\mathcal{G}(F)$ is $\chi$-bounded. So far the problem has been attempted for only forest $F$ with four or five vertices. In this paper, we address the case when $F=P_3\cup 2K_1$ and show that if $G$ is a $\{P_3\cup 2K_1,\overline{P_3\cup 2K_1}\}$-free graph with $\omega(G)\neq 3$, then it admits $\omega(G)+1$ as a $\chi$-binding function. Moreover, we also construct examples to show that this bound is tight for all values of $\omega\neq 3$.

Coloring of some $(P_2\cup P_4)$-free graphs

Abstract:We denote a path on $t$ vertices as $P_t$ and a cycle on $t$ vertices as $C_t$. For two vertex-disjoint graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$, the {\em union} $G_1\cup G_2$ is the graph with $V(G_1\cup G_2)=V(G_1)\cup V(G_2)$ and $E(G_1\cup G_2)=E(G_1)\cup E(G_2)$. A {\em diamond} (resp. {\em gem}) is a graph consisting of a $P_3$ (resp. $P_4$) and a new vertex adjacent to all vertices of the $P_3$ (resp. $P_4$), and a {\em butterfly} is a graph consisting of two triangles that share one vertex. In this paper, we show that $\chi(G)\le 3\omega(G)-2$ if $G$ is a ($P_2\cup P_4$, gem)-free graph, $\chi(G)\le \frac{\omega(G)^2+3\omega(G)-2}{2}$ if $G$ is a ($P_2\cup P_4$, butterfly)-free graph. We also study the class of ($P_2\cup P_4$, diamond)-free graphs, and show that, for such a graph $G$, $\chi(G)\leq4$ if $\omega(G)=2$, $\chi(G)\leq7$ if $\omega(G)=3$, $\chi(G)\leq9$ if $\omega(G)=4$, and $\chi(G)\leq2\omega(G)-1$ if $\omega(G)\ge 5$. Moreover, we prove that $G$ is perfect if $G$ is ($P_2\cup P_4$, diamond, $C_5$)-free with $\omega(G)\geq5$.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that every (2P_2,K_4)-free graph is 4-colorable. The bound is attained by the five-wheel and the complement of the seven-cycle. This answers an open question by Wagon in the 1980s. Our result can also be viewed as a result in the study of the Vizing bound for graph classes. A major open problem in the study of computational complexity of graph coloring is whether coloring can be solved in polynomial time for (4P_1,C_4)-free graphs. Lozin and Malyshev conjecture that the answer is yes. As an application of our main result, we provide the first positive evidence to the conjecture by giving a 2-approximation algorithm for coloring (4P_1,C_4)-free graphs.

Abstract:Problem of finding an optimal upper bound for {\chi} of (3 Times K1)-free graphs is still open and pretty hard. It was proved by Choudum et al that upper bound on the {\chi} of {3 Times K1, {2 Times K1 + (K2 UNION K1)}-free graphs is 2{\omega}. We improve this by proving that if G is {3 Times K1, {2 Times K1 + (K2 UNION K1)}-free, then {\chi} less than or equal to 3{\omega} divided by 2 for {\omega} not equal to 5, and {\chi} less than or equal to 8 for {\omega} = 5 where {\omega} is the size of a maximum clique in G. We also give examples of extremal graphs.

Abstract:Even-hole-free graphs are a graph class of much interest. Foley et al. [Graphs Comb. 36(1): 125-138 (2020)] have recently studied $(4K_1, C_4, C_6)$-free graphs, which form a subclass of even-hole-free graphs. Specifically, Foley et al. have shown an algorithm for coloring these graphs via bounded clique-width if they contain a $C_7$. In this note, we give a simpler and much faster algorithm via a more restrictive graph parameter, neighborhood diversity.

Abstract: In this paper, we give an optimal $\chi$-binding function for the class of $(P_7,C_4,C_5)$-free graphs. We show that every $(P_7,C_4,C_5)$-free graph $G$ has $\chi(G)\le \lceil \frac{11}{9}\omega(G) \rceil$. To prove the result, we use a decomposition theorem obtained in [K. Cameron and S. Huang and I. Penev and V. Sivaraman, The class of $({P}_7,{C}_4,{C}_5)$-free graphs: Decomposition, algorithms, and $\chi$-boundedness, Journal of Graph Theory 93, 503--552, 2020] combined with careful inductive arguments and a nontrivial use of the K\"{o}nig theorem for bipartite matching.

Some Results on Critical ($P_5,H$)-free Graphs

Abstract:Given two graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, a graph is $(H_1,H_2)$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H_1$ nor $H_2$. A graph $G$ is $k$-vertex-critical if every proper induced subgraph of $G$ has chromatic number less than $k$, but $G$ has chromatic number $k$. The study of $k$-vertex-critical graphs for specific graph classes is an important topic in algorithmic graph theory because if the number of such graphs that are in a given hereditary graph class is finite, then there exists a polynomial-time certifying algorithm to decide the $k$-colorability of a graph in the class. In this paper, we show that: (1) for $k \ge 1$, there are finitely many $k$-vertex-critical $(P_5,K_{1,4}+P_1)$-free graphs; (2) for $s \ge 1$, there are finitely many 5-vertex-critical $(P_5,K_{1,s}+P_1)$-free graphs; (3) for $k \ge 1$, there are finitely many $k$-vertex-critical $(P_5,\overline{K_3+2P_1})$-free graphs. Moreover, we characterize all $5$-vertex-critical $(P_5,H)$-free graphs where $H \in \{K_{1,3}+P_1,K_{1,4}+P_1,\overline{K_3+2P_1}\}$ using an exhaustive graph generation algorithm.

Abstract:The Borodin-Kostochka Conjecture states that for a graph $G$, if $\Delta(G)\geq9$, then $\chi(G)\leq\max\{\Delta(G)-1,\omega(G)\}$. We use $P_t$ and $C_t$ to denote a path and a cycle on $t$ vertices, respectively. Let $C=v_1v_2v_3v_4v_5v_1$ be an induced $C_5$. A {\em $C_5^+$} is a graph obtained from $C$ by adding a $C_3=xyzx$ and a $P_2=t_1t_2$ such that (1) $x$ and $y$ are both exactly adjacent to $v_1,v_2,v_3$ in $V(C)$, $z$ is exactly adjacent to $v_2$ in $V(C)$, $t_1$ is exactly adjacent to $v_4,v_5$ in $V(C)$ and $t_2$ is exactly adjacent to $v_1,v_4,v_5$ in $V(C)$, (2) $t_1$ is exactly adjacent to $z$ in $\{x,y,z\}$ and $t_2$ has no neighbors in $\{x,y,z\}$. In this paper, we show that the Borodin-Kostochka Conjecture holds for ($P_6,C_4,H$)-free graphs, where $H\in \{K_7,C_5^+\}$. This generalizes some results of Gupta and Pradhan in \cite{GP21,GP24}.

On graphs with no induced $P_5$ or $K_5-e$

Abstract:In this paper, we are interested in some problems related to chromatic number and clique number for the class of $(P_5,K_5-e)$-free graphs, and prove the following. $(a)$ If $G$ is a connected ($P_5,K_5-e$)-free graph with $\omega(G)\geq 7$, then either $G$ is the complement of a bipartite graph or $G$ has a clique cut-set. Moreover, there is a connected ($P_5,K_5-e$)-free imperfect graph $H$ with $\omega(H)=6$ and has no clique cut-set. This strengthens a result of Malyshev and Lobanova [Disc. Appl. Math. 219 (2017) 158--166]. $(b)$ If $G$ is a ($P_5,K_5-e$)-free graph with $\omega(G)\geq 4$, then $\chi(G)\leq \max\{7, \omega(G)\}$. Moreover, the bound is tight when $\omega(G)\notin \{4,5,6\}$. This result together with known results partially answers a question of Ju and Huang [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2303.18003" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2303.18003">arXiv:2303.18003</a> [math.CO] 2023], and also improves a result of Xu [Manuscript 2022]. While the "Chromatic Number Problem" is known to be $NP$-hard for the class of $P_5$-free graphs, our results together with some known results imply that the "Chromatic Number Problem" can be solved in polynomial time for the class of ($P_5,K_5-e$)-free graphs which may be independent interest.

The Class of (P_7,c_4,c_5)-Free Graphs: Decomposition, Algorithms, and Χ-Boundedness

Abstract:As usual, Pn (n >= 1) denotes the path on n vertices, and Cn (n >= 3) denotes the cycle on n vertices. For a family H of graphs, we say that a graph G is H-free if no induced subgraph of G is isomorphic to any graph in H. We present a decomposition theorem for the class of (P7,C4,C5)-free graphs; in fact, we give a complete structural characterization of (P7,C4,C5)-free graphs that do not admit a clique-cutset. We use this decomposition theorem to show that the class of (P7,C4,C5)-free graphs is chi-bounded by a linear function (more precisely, every (P7,C4,C5)-free graph G satisfies chi(G)<= 3/2 omega(G)). We also use the decomposition theorem to construct an O(n3) algorithm for the minimum coloring problem, an O(n2m) algorithm for the maximum weight stable set problem, and an O(n3) algorithm for the maximum weight clique problem for this class, where n denotes the number of vertices and m the number of edges of the input graph.
Vertex-critical graphs in co-gem-free graphs

Abstract:A graph $G$ is $k$-vertex-critical if $\chi(G)=k$ but $\chi(G-v)<k$ for all $v\in V(G)$ and $(G,H)$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $G$ or $H$. We show that there are only finitely many $k$-vertex-critical (co-gem, $H$)-free graphs for all $k$ when $H$ is any graph of order $4$ by showing finiteness in the three remaining open cases, those are the cases when $H$ is $2P_2$, $K_3+P_1$, and $K_4$. For the first two cases we actually prove the stronger results: $\bullet$ There are only finitely many $k$-vertex-critical (co-gem, paw$+P_1$)-free graphs for all $k$ and that only finitely many $k$-vertex-critical (co-gem, paw$+P_1$)-free graphs for all $k\ge 1$. $\bullet$ There are only finitely many $k$-vertex-critical (co-gem, $P_5$, $P_3+cP_2$)-free graphs for all $k\ge 1$ and $c\ge 0$. To prove the latter result, we employ a novel application of Sperner's Theorem on the number of antichains in a partially ordered set. Our result for $K_4$ uses exhaustive computer search and is proved by showing the stronger result that every $(\text{co-gem, }K_4)$-free graph is $4$-colourable. Our results imply the existence of simple polynomial-time certifying algorithms to decide the $k$-colourability of (co-gem, $H$)-free graphs for all $k$ and all $H$ of order $4$ by searching the vertex-critical graphs as induced subgraphs.

Abstract:In 2012, Lévêque, Maffray, and Trotignon conjectured that each graph $G$ that contains no induced subdivision of $K_4$ is $4$-colorable. In this paper, we prove that this conjecture holds when $G$ contains a $K_{1,2,3}$.

Abstract:Given two graphs H 1 and H 2 , a graph G is ( H 1 , H 2 ) ‐free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to H 1 or H 2 . Let P t and C s be the path on t vertices and the cycle on s vertices, respectively. In this paper we show that for any ( P 6 , C 4 ) ‐free graph G it holds that χ ( G ) ≤ ( 3 / 2 ) ω ( G ) , where χ ( G ) and ω ( G ) are the chromatic number and clique number of G , respectively. Our bound is attained by several graphs, for instance, the 5‐cycle, the Petersen graph, the Petersen graph with an additional universal vertex, and all 4 ‐critical ( P 6 , C 4 ) ‐free graphs other than K 4 (see Hell and Huang [Discrete Appl. Math. 216 (2017), pp. 211–232]). The new result unifies previously known results on the existence of linear χ ‐binding functions for several graph classes. Our proof is based on a novel structure theorem on ( P 6 , C 4 ) ‐free graphs that do not contain clique cutsets. Using this structure theorem we also design a polynomial time 3 ∕ 2 ‐approximation algorithm for coloring ( P 6 , C 4 ) ‐free graphs. Our algorithm computes a coloring with ( 3 / 2 ) ω ( G ) colors for any ( P 6 , C 4 ) ‐free graph G in O ( n 2 m ) time.
