Abstract:The (dual) Cauchy identity has an easy algebraic proof utilising a commutation relation between the up and (dual) down operators. By using Fomin's growth diagrams, a bijective proof of the commutation relation can be "bijectivised" to obtain RSK like correspondences. In this paper we give a concise overview of this machinery and extend it to Littlewood type identities by introducing a new family of relations between these operators, called projection identities. Thereby we obtain infinite families of bijections for the Littlewood identities generalising the classical ones. We believe that this approach will be useful for finding bijective proofs for Littlewood type identities in other settings such as for Macdonald polynomials and their specialisations, alternating sign matrices or vertex models.

Abstract:We derive combinatorial identities, involving the Bernoulli and Euler numbers, for the numbers of standard Young tableaux of certain skew shapes. This generalizes the classical formulas of D. Andre on the number of up-down permutations. The analysis uses a transfer operator approach extending the method of Elkies, combined with an identity expressing the volume of a certain polytope in terms of a Schur function.

On the Correspondence Between Integer Sequences and Vacillating Tableaux

Abstract:A fundamental identity in the representation theory of the partition algebra is $n^k = \sum_{\lambda} f^\lambda m_k^\lambda$ for $n \geq 2k$, where $\lambda$ ranges over integer partitions of $n$, $f^\lambda$ is the number of standard Young tableaux of shape $\lambda$, and $m_k^\lambda$ is the number of vacillating tableaux of shape $\lambda$ and length $2k$. Using a combination of RSK insertion and jeu de taquin, Halverson and Lewandowski constructed a bijection $DI_n^k$ that maps each integer sequence in $[n]^k$ to a pair of tableaux of the same shape, where one is a standard Young tableau and the other is a vacillating tableau. In this paper, we study the fine properties of Halverson and Lewandowski's bijection and explore the correspondence between integer sequences and the vacillating tableaux via the map $DI_n^k$ for general integers $n$ and $k$. In particular, we characterize the integer sequences $\boldsymbol{i}$ whose corresponding shape, $\lambda$, in the image $DI_n^k(\boldsymbol{i})$, satisfies $\lambda_1 = n$ or $\lambda_1 = n-k$.

A combinatorial proof of an identity involving Eulerian numbers

Abstract:We give a combinatorial proof of an identity that involves Eulerian numbers and was obtained algebraically by Brenti and Welker (2009). To do so, we study alcoved triangulations of dilated hypersimplices. As a byproduct, we describe the dual graph of the triangulation in the case of the standard simplex, conjecture its structure for general hypersimplices, and prove combinatorially that the Eulerian numbers coincide with the normalized volumes of the hypersimplices.

Generalisations of Capparelli's and Primc's identities, I: coloured Frobenius partitions and combinatorial proofs

Abstract:In these two companion papers, we give infinite families of partition identities which generalise Primc's and Capparelli's identities, and study their consequences on the theory of crystal bases of the affine Lie algebra $A_{n-1}^{(1)}.$ In this first paper, we focus on combinatorial aspects. We give a $n^2$-coloured generalisation of Primc's identity by constructing a $n^2 \times n^2$ matrix of difference conditions, Primc's original identities corresponding to $n=2$ and $n=3$. While most coloured partition identities in the literature connect partitions with difference conditions to partitions with congruence conditions, in our case, the natural way to generalise these identities is to relate partitions with difference conditions to coloured Frobenius partitions. This gives a very simple expression for the generating function. With a particular specialisation of the colour variables, our generalisation also yields a partition identity with congruence conditions. Then, using a bijection from our new generalisation of Primc's identity, we deduce a multi-parameter family of identities on $(n^2-1)$-coloured partitions which generalise Capparelli's identity, also in terms of coloured Frobenius partitions. The particular case $n=2$ is Capparelli's identity and the case $n=3$ recovers an identity of Meurman and Primc. In the second paper, we will focus on crystal theoretic aspects. We will show that the difference conditions we defined in our $n^2$-coloured generalisation of Primc's identity are actually energy functions for certain $A_{n-1}^{(1)}$ crystals. We will then use this result to retrieve the Kac-Peterson character formula and derive a new character formula as a sum of infinite products for all the irreducible highest weight $A_{n-1}^{(1)}$-modules of level $1$.

Abstract:A tableau inversion is a pair of entries from the same column of a row-standard tableau that lack the relative ordering necessary to make the tableau column-standard. An $i$-inverted Young tableau is a row-standard tableau with precisely $i$ inversion pairs, and may be interpreted as a generalization of (column-standard) Young tableau. Inverted Young tableau that lack repeated entries were introduced by Fresse to calculate the Betti numbers of Springer fibers in Type A, and were later developed as combinatorial objects in their own right by Beagley and Drube. This paper generalizes earlier notions of tableau inversions to row-standard tableaux with repeated entries, yielding an interesting new generalization of semistandard (as opposed to merely standard) Young tableaux. We develop a closed formula for the maximum numbers of inversion pairs for a row-standard tableau with a specific shape and content, and show that the number of $i$-inverted tableaux of a given shape is invariant under permutation of content. We then enumerate $i$-inverted Young tableaux for a variety of shapes and contents, and generalize an earlier result that places $1$-inverted Young tableaux of a general shape in bijection with $0$-inverted Young tableaux of a variety of related shapes.

Ghost series and a motivated proof of the Bressoud-Göllnitz-Gordon identities

Abstract:We present what we call a "motivated proof" of the Bressoud-Göllnitz-Gordon partition identities. Similar "motivated proofs" have been given by Andrews and Baxter for the Rogers-Ramanujan identities and by Lepowsky and Zhu for Gordon's identities. Additionally, "motivated proofs" have also been given for the Andrews-Bressoud partition identities by Kanade, Lepowsky, Russell, and Sills and for the Göllnitz-Gordon-Andrews identities by Coulson, Kanade, Lepowsky, McRae, Qi, Russell, and the third author. Our proof borrows both the use of "ghost series" from the "motivated proof" of the Andrews-Bressoud identities and uses recursions similar to those found in the "motivated proof" of the Göllnitz-Gordon-Andrews identities. We anticipate that this "motivated proof" of the Bressoud-Göllnitz-Gordon identities will illuminate certain twisted vertex-algebraic constructions.

Abstract:Consider an algebraic identity between elliptic modular graphs where several vertices are at fixed locations (and hence unintegrated) while the others are integrated over the toroidal worldsheet. At any unintegrated vertex, we can glue an arbitrary expression involving elliptic modular graphs which has the same unintegrated vertex. Integrating over that vertex, we obtain new algebraic identities between elliptic modular graphs. Hence this elementary process of convoluting the original "seed" identity with other graphs yields infinite number of new identities. We consider various seed identities in which two of the vertices are unintegrated. Convoluting them with families of elliptic modular graphs, we obtain new identities. Each identity is parametrized by an arbitrary number of links in the graphs as well as the positions of unintegrated vertices. On identifying the unintegrated vertices, this leads to an algebraic identity involving modular graphs where all the vertices are integrated over the worldsheet.

Abstract:We provide combinatorial tools inspired by work of Warnaar to give combinatorial interpretations of the sum sides of the Andrews-Gordon and Bressoud identities. More precisely, we give an explicit weight- and length-preserving bijection between sets related to integer partitions, which provides these interpretations. In passing, we discover the $q$-series version of an identity of Kurşungöz, similar to the Bressoud identity but with opposite parity conditions, which we prove combinatorially using the classical Bressoud identity and our bijection. We also use this bijection to prove combinatorially many identities, some known and other new, of the Andrews-Gordon and Bressoud type.

Durfee rectangle identities as character identities for infinite Fibonacci configurations

Abstract:We introduce a natural generalization of Maya diagrams -- the space of infinite Fibonacci configurations, which are specified functions on $\mathbb{Z}$ with values $1$ and $0$. Infinite Fibonacci configurations are particularly interesting as soon as they parametrize Feigin-Stoyanovsky type bases in lattice vertex superalgebras $V_{\sqrt{N}\mathbb{Z}}$ and their irreducible modules. We calculate the character of such configurations space by two different ways and obtain series of combinatorial identities. These identities turn out to be Durfee rectangle identities with shifts in base and height.

Abstract:We introduce a generalization of semistandard composition tableaux called permuted composition tableaux. These tableaux are intimately related to permuted basement semistandard augmented fillings studied by Haglund, Mason and Remmel. Our primary motivation for studying permuted composition tableaux is to enumerate all possible ordered pairs of permutations $(\sigma_1,\sigma_2)$ that can be obtained by standardizing the entries in two adjacent columns of an arbitrary composition tableau. We refer to such pairs as compatible pairs. To study compatible pairs in depth, we define a $0$-Hecke action on permuted composition tableaux. This action naturally defines an equivalence relation on these tableaux. Certain distinguished representatives of the resulting equivalence classes in the special case of two-columned tableaux are in bijection with compatible pairs. We provide a bijection between two-columned tableaux and labeled binary trees. This bijection maps a quadruple of descent statistics for 2-columned tableaux to left and right ascent-descent statistics on labeled binary trees introduced by Gessel, and we use it to prove that the number of compatible pairs is $(n+1)^{n-1}$.

Multiprojective Seshadri stratifications and Young-tableaux

Abstract:We provide an algebraic-geometrical interpretation of the classical semistandard Young-tableaux via the notion of Seshadri stratifications. The columns appearing in such a tableau correspond to vanishing multiplicities of certain rational functions on Schubert varieties. To build a framework for this correspondence we generalize Seshadri stratifications to multiprojective varieties, which forms the largest part of this article.

Abstract:We construct a family of partition identities which contain the following identities: Rogers-Ramanujan-Gordon identities, Bressoud's even moduli generalization of them, and their counterparts for overpartitions due to Lovejoy et al. and Chen et al. We obtain unusual companion identities to known theorems as well as to the new ones in the process. The proof is, against tradition, constructive and open to automation.

Promotion permutations for tableaux

Abstract:In our companion paper, we develop a new $SL_4$-web basis. Basis elements are given by certain planar graphs and are constructed so that important algebraic operations can be performed diagrammatically. A guiding principle behind our construction is that the long cycle $(12\ldots n) \in \mathfrak{S}_n$ should act by rotation of webs. Moreover, the bijection between webs and tableaux should intertwine rotation with the promotion action on tableaux. In this paper, we develop necessary notions of promotion permutations and promotion matrices, which are new even for standard tableaux. To support inductive arguments in the companion paper, we must however work in the more general setting of fluctuating tableaux, which we introduce and which subsumes many classes of tableaux that have been previously studied, including (generalized) oscillating, vacillating, rational, alternating, and (semi)standard tableaux. Therefore, we also give here a full development of the basic combinatorics and representation theory of fluctuating tableaux.

Abstract:Tensor polynomial identities generalize the concept of polynomial identities on $d \times d$ matrices to identities on tensor product spaces. Here we completely characterize a certain class of tensor polynomial identities in terms of their associated Young tableaux. Furthermore, we provide a method to evaluate arbitrary alternating tensor polynomials in $d^2$ variables.
