Abstract:In this article, a short combinatorial proof of the Capelli's identity is given. It also leads to an easy proof of the Capelli--Cauchy--Binet identity, a more general form of Capelli's identity. With the technique introduced, the Turnbull's identity can be proven by sum with signs. At the end of the article, the general Cayley identity is discussed as a dual version of Capelli's identity.

Abstract:A proof of several identities of Ramanujan involving theta functions of level $7$ is given which uses a specific modular function for $\Gamma_1(7)$ and Klein's projective representation of $PSL(2,7)$ into $PSL(3, \mathbb{C})$. Four identities of Berndt and Zhang are derived as algebraic corollaries of the main proof.

Abstract:In the paper, the authors intrinsically observe that Hoffman's combinatorial identity discovered in 1992 and Genčev's combinatorial identities extended in 2024 can be reformulated in terms of complete Bell polynomials. They provide alternative proofs and offer some elementary generalizations of these combinatorial identities.

Abstract:The classical Capelli identity is an important determinantal identity of a matrix with noncommutative entries that determines the center of the enveloping algebra of the general linear Lie algebra, and was used by Weyl as a main tool to study irreducible representations in his famous book on classical groups. In 1996 Okounkov found higher Capelli identities involving immanants of the generating matrix of $U(gl(n))$ which correspond to arbitrary orthogonal idempotent of the symmetric group. It turns out that Williamson also discovered a general Capelli identity of immanants for $U(gl(n))$ in 1981. In this paper, we use a new method to derive a family of even more general Capelli identities that include the aforementioned Capelli identities as special cases as well as many other Capelli-type identities as corollaries. In particular, we obtain generalized Turnbull's identities for both symmetric and antisymmetric matrices, as well as the generalized Howe-Umeda-Kostant-Sahi identities for antisymmetric matrices which confirm the conjecture of Caracciolo, Sokal, and Sportiello.

Abstract:Recently, Andrews and El Bachraoui (2024) proved three very interesting $q$-series identities, from which three simple looking identities involving certain restricted partitions into distinct even parts and $4$-regular partitions follow. In this short note, we give combinatorial proofs of these identities. We also prove the counterpart identities for the restricted partitions into distinct odd parts.

Abstract:We give a combinatorial proof of an identity that involves Eulerian numbers and was obtained algebraically by Brenti and Welker (2009). To do so, we study alcoved triangulations of dilated hypersimplices. As a byproduct, we describe the dual graph of the triangulation in the case of the standard simplex, conjecture its structure for general hypersimplices, and prove combinatorially that the Eulerian numbers coincide with the normalized volumes of the hypersimplices.

Abstract:We provide combinatorial tools inspired by work of Warnaar to give combinatorial interpretations of the sum sides of the Andrews-Gordon and Bressoud identities. More precisely, we give an explicit weight- and length-preserving bijection between sets related to integer partitions, which provides these interpretations. In passing, we discover the $q$-series version of an identity of Kurşungöz, similar to the Bressoud identity but with opposite parity conditions, which we prove combinatorially using the classical Bressoud identity and our bijection. We also use this bijection to prove combinatorially many identities, some known and other new, of the Andrews-Gordon and Bressoud type.

Abstract:We provide a direct combinatorial proof of a Feynman graph identity which implies a wide generalization of a formality theorem by Kontsevich. For a Feynman graph $\Gamma$, we associate to each vertex a position $x_v \in \mathbb R$ and to each edge $e$ the combination $s_e = a_e^{-\frac 12} \left( x^+_e - x^-_e \right)$, where $x^\pm_e$ are the positions of the two end vertices of $e$ and $a_e$ a Schwinger parameter. The $``$topological propagator$"$ $P_e = e^{-s_e^2}$d$s_e$ includes a part proportional to d$x_v$ and a part proportional to d$a_e$. Integrating the product of all $P_e$ over positions produces a differential form $\alpha_\Gamma$ in the variables $a_e$. We prove that $\alpha_\Gamma \wedge \alpha_\Gamma=0$.

Decomplexification of the Capelli identities and holomorphic factorization

Abstract:The Capelli identities claim $det(A)det(B) = det(AB+correction)$ for certain matrices with noncommutative entries. They have applications in representation theory and integrable systems. We propose new examples of these identities, constructed according to the following principle. For several known identities for $n$ by $n$ matrices we construct new identity for $2n$ by $2n$ matrices where each element $z$ of the original matrix is substituted by 2x2 matrix of the form $[real(z) ~imag(z); ~ -imag(z) ~ real(z)]$, i.e. we view the original identity as complex valued, while the new identity is its real form (decomplexification). It appears that "decomplexification" affects non-trivially the "correction term". It becomes tridiagonal matrix, in contrast to the diagonal in the classical case. The key result is an extension to the non-commutative setting of the fact that the determinant of the decomplexified matrix is equal to the square module of the determinant of the original matrix (in non-commutative setting the corrections are necessary). The decomplexified Capelli's identities are corollaries of this fact and standard Capelli identities. We also discuss analogs of the Cayley identity; observe that the Capelli determinant coincides with the Duflo image of the standard determinant; give short proof of the Cayley identity via Harish-Chandra's radial part calculation. The main motivation for us is a recent paper by An Huang (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1102.2657" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1102.2657">arXiv:1102.2657</a>). From our viewpoint his result is a "dequaternionification" of 1 by 1 Capelli identity. Apparently it can be extended to $n$ by $n$ case, but our approach should be somehow modified for this. The paper aims to be accessible and interesting not only for experts. It gives brief review of Capelli identities, applications, their relation with Wick quantization, Duflo map, some open issues, etc.

Abstract:This article is concerned with the constants that appear in Harish-Chandra's character formula for stable discrete series of real reductive groups, although it does not require any knowledge about real reductive groups or discrete series. In Harish-Chandra's work the only information we have about these constants is that they are uniquely determined by an inductive property. Later Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson and Herb gave different formulas for these constants. In this article we generalize these formulas to the case of arbitrary finite Coxeter groups (in this setting, discrete series no longer make sense), and give a direct proof that the two formulas agree. We actually prove a slightly more general identity that also implies the combinatorial identity underlying the discrete series character identities of Morel. We deduce this identity from a general abstract theorem giving a way to calculate the alternating sum of the values of a valuation on the chambers of a Coxeter arrangement. We also introduce a ring structure on the set of valuations on polyhedral cones in Euclidean space with values in a fixed ring. This gives a theoretical framework for the valuation appearing in Appendix A of the Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson paper. In Appendix B we extend the notion of $2$-structures (due to Herb) to pseudo-root systems.

Row-Column duality and combinatorial topological strings

Abstract:Integrality properties of partial sums over irreducible representations, along columns of character tables of finite groups, were recently derived using combinatorial topological string theories (CTST). These CTST were based on Dijkgraaf-Witten theories of flat $G$-bundles for finite groups $G$ in two dimensions, denoted $G$-TQFTs. We define analogous combinatorial topological strings related to two dimensional TQFTs based on fusion coefficients of finite groups. These TQFTs are denoted as $R(G)$-TQFTs and allow analogous integrality results to be derived for partial row sums of characters over conjugacy classes along fixed rows. This relation between the $G$-TQFTs and $R(G)$-TQFTs defines a row-column duality for character tables, which provides a physical framework for exploring the mathematical analogies between rows and columns of character tables. These constructive proofs of integrality are complemented with the proof of similar and complementary results using the more traditional Galois theoretic framework for integrality properties of character tables. The partial row and column sums are used to define generalised partitions of the integer row and column sums, which are of interest in combinatorial representation theory.
