Abstract:We outline a proof of a remarkable conjecture of Labastida-Mari{\~n}o-Ooguri-Vafa about certain new algebraic structures of quantum link invariants and the integrality of infinite family of new topological invariants. Our method is based on the cut-and-join analysis and a special rational ring characterizing the structure of the Chern-Simons partition function.

Abstract:Recently Freed and Hopkins [11] proved that there is no parity anomaly in M-theory on pin(+) manifolds in the low-energy field theory approximation, and they also developed an algebraic theory of cubic forms. Earlier Witten [33] proved the anomaly cancellation for spin manifolds by introducing the E-8-bundle technique. Motivated by the cubic forms and the anomaly cancellation formulas of Witten-Freed-Hopkins, we give some new cubic forms on spin, spinc(e), spin(omega 2) and orientable 12-manifolds respectively. We relate them to eta-invariants when the manifolds are with boundary, and mod 2 indices on 10 dimensional characteristic submanifolds when the manifolds are spinc or spin(omega 2). Our method of producing these cubic forms is a combination of (generalized) Witten classes and the character of the basic representation of affine E-8. (C) 2021 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We construct a bijection between certain Deodhar components of a braid variety constructed from an affine Kac-Moody group of type $A_{n-1}$ and vertex-labeled trees on $n$ vertices. By an argument of Galashin, Lam, and Williams using Opdam's trace formula in the affine Hecke algebra and an identity due to Haglund, we obtain an elaborate new proof for the enumeration of the number of vertex-labeled trees on $n$ vertices.

An alternate proof of Payan's theorem on cubelike graphs

Abstract:A cubelike graph is a Cayley graph on the product $\mathbb{Z}_2\times\cdots\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ of the integers modulo $2$ with itself finitely many times. In 1992, Payan proved that no cubelike graph can have chromatic number $3$. The authors of the present paper previously developed a general matrix method for studying chromatic numbers of Cayley graphs on abelian groups. In this note, we apply this method of Heuberger matrices to give an alternate proof of Payan's theorem.

Abstract:We provide an algebraic-geometrical interpretation of the classical semistandard Young-tableaux via the notion of Seshadri stratifications. The columns appearing in such a tableau correspond to vanishing multiplicities of certain rational functions on Schubert varieties. To build a framework for this correspondence we generalize Seshadri stratifications to multiprojective varieties, which forms the largest part of this article.

Abstract:Using the Morris-Selberg Constant Term Identity, I sketch a proof of a recent conjecture by Karola Meszaros and Alejandro Morales, that I believe could be easily made fully rigorous by a sufficiently skilled and, sufficiently interested, analyst. This conjecture is an analog to the root system $D_n$ of a conjecture made in 1998 by Clara Chan, the late David P. Robbins, and David Yuen, that I proved immediately after, also using the Morris identity.

Daisy cubes as resonance graphs and maximal independent sets of trees

Abstract:Assume that $G$ is a homeomorphically peripheral color alternating graph with inner dual $G^*$ and resonance graph $R(G)$. We first establish a bijection between the set of maximal hypercubes of the resonance graph $R(G)$ and the set of maximal independent sets of the inner dual $G^*$, where $G^*$ is a tree and isomorphic to the $\tau$-graph of $R(G)$. A novel characterization on when resonance graphs are daisy cubes follows naturally. Furthermore, the proof of the characterization provides a binary code labelling for the vertex set of a resonance graph $R(G)$ as a daisy cube with respect to the set of maximal independent sets of the inner dual $G^*$ of $G$. We then show that a daisy cube with at least one edge is a resonance graph of a plane bipartite graph if and only if its $\tau$-graph is a forest. As applications of our main theorems, interesting results are obtained for Fibonacci cubes and Lucas cubes which are special types of daisy cubes. Structure properties are also provided for daisy cubes whose $\tau$-graphs are trees and have at most five maximal hypercubes. We conclude the paper with two algorithms which provide a binary code labelling for the vertex set of a resonance graph as a daisy cube.

Abstract:We study three combinatorial models for the lower-triangular matrix with entries $t_{n,k} = \binom{n}{k} n^{n-k}$: two involving rooted trees on the vertex set $[n+1]$, and one involving partial functional digraphs on the vertex set $[n]$. We show that this matrix is totally positive and that the sequence of its row-generating polynomials is coefficientwise Hankel-totally positive. We then generalize to polynomials $t_{n,k}(y,z)$ that count improper and proper edges, and further to polynomials $t_{n,k}(y,\mathbf{\phi})$ in infinitely many indeterminates that give a weight $y$ to each improper edge and a weight $m! \, \phi_m$ for each vertex with $m$ proper children. We show that if the weight sequence $\mathbf{\phi}$ is Toeplitz-totally positive, then the two foregoing total-positivity results continue to hold. Our proofs use production matrices and exponential Riordan arrays.

Three-edge-coloring projective planar cubic graphs: A generalization of the Four Color Theorem

Abstract:We prove that every cyclically 4-edge-connected cubic graph that can be embedded in the projective plane, with the single exception of the Petersen graph, is 3-edge-colorable. In other words, the only (non-trivial) snark that can be embedded in the projective plane is the Petersen graph. This implies that a 2-connected cubic (multi)graph that can be embedded in the projective plane is not 3-edge-colorable if and only if it can be obtained from the Petersen graph by replacing each vertex by a 2-edge-connected planar cubic (multi)graph. This result is a nontrivial generalization of the Four Color Theorem, and its proof requires a combination of extensive computer verification and computer-free extension of existing proofs on colorability. An unexpected consequence of this result is a coloring-flow duality statement for the projective plane: A cubic graph embedded in the projective plane is 3-edge-colorable if and only if its dual multigraph is 5-vertex-colorable. Moreover, we show that a 2-edge connected graph embedded in the projective plane admits a nowhere-zero 4-flow unless it is Peteren-like (in which case it does not admit nowhere-zero 4-flows). This proves a strengthening of the Tutte 4-flow conjecture for graphs on the projective plane. Some of our proofs require extensive computer verification. The necessary source codes, together with the input and output files and the complete set of more than 6000 reducible configurations are available on Github (this https URL) which can be considered as an Addendum to this paper. Moreover, we provide pseudocodes for all our computer verifications.

Abstract:In this work we completely describe the dynamics of triangle tiling billiards. In the first part of this work, we propose a geometric approach of dynamics by introducing natural foliations associated to it. In the second part, we exploit the relationship between triangle tiling billiards and a family of fully flipped $3$-interval exchange transformations on the circle. We give a combinatorial approach of dynamics via renormalization. By uniting the two approaches, we prove several conjectures on the dynamics of triangle tiling billiards. First, we prove the Tree Conjecture and the 4n+2 Conjecture, both concerning the symbolic dynamics of periodic trajectories, and both stated by Baird-Smith, Davis, Fromm and Iyer. Second, we study a family of exceptional trajectories which are closely related to the orbits of minimal Arnoux-Rauzy maps. We prove that all of these exceptional trajectories pass by all tiles, which confirms our own conjecture with P. Hubert on their non-linear escape. Moreover, we use tiling billiards to prove the convergence, up to rescaling, of arithmetic orbits of the Arnoux-Yoccoz map to the Rauzy fractal, conjectured by Hooper and Weiss. All of these conjectures have been stated in print in the last three years.

Abstract:Let $Y_d$ be a del Pezzo threefold of Picard rank one and degree $d\geq 2$. In this paper, we apply two different viewpoints to study $Y_d$ via a particular admissible subcategory of its bounded derived category, called the Kuznetsov component: (i) Brill-Noether reconstruction. We show that $Y_d$ can be uniquely recovered as a Brill-Noether locus of Bridgeland stable objects in its Kuznetsov component. (ii) Exact equivalences. We prove that, up to composing with an explicit auto-equivalence, any Fourier-Mukai type equivalence of Kuznetsov components of two del Pezzo threefolds of degree $2\leq d\leq 4$ can be lifted to an equivalence of their bounded derived categories. As a result, we obtain a complete description of the group of Fourier-Mukai type auto-equivalences of the Kuznetsov component of $Y_d$. We also describe the group of Fourier-Mukai type auto-equivalences of Kuznetsov components of index one prime Fano threefolds $X_{2g-2}$ of genus $g=6$ and $8$. As an application, first we identify the group of automorphisms of $X_{14}$ and its associated $Y_3$. Then we give a new disproof of Kuznetsov's Fano threefold conjecture by assuming Gushel-Mukai threefolds are general. In an appendix, we classify instanton sheaves on quartic double solids, generalizing a result of Druel.

Abstract:We prove that every 2-sphere graph different from a prism can be vertex 4-colored in such a way that all Kempe chains are forests. This implies the following three tree theorem: the arboricity of a discrete 2-sphere is 3. Moreover, the three trees can be chosen so that each hits every triangle. A consequence is a result of an exercise in the book of Bondy and Murty based on work of A. Frank, A. Gyarfas and C. Nash-Williams: the arboricity of a planar graph is less or equal than 3.

Abstract:We introduce a recurrence which we term the multidimensional cube recurrence, generalizing the octahedron recurrence studied by Propp, Fomin and Zelevinsky, Speyer, and Fock and Goncharov and the three-dimensional cube recurrence studied by Fomin and Zelevinsky, and Carroll and Speyer. The states of this recurrence are indexed by tilings of a polygon with rhombi, and the variables in the recurrence are indexed by vertices of these tilings. We travel from one state of the recurrence to another by performing elementary flips. We show that the values of the recurrence are independent of the order in which we perform the flips; this proof involves nontrivial combinatorial results about rhombus tilings which may be of independent interest. We then show that the multidimensional cube recurrence exhibits the Laurent phenomenon -- any variable is given by a Laurent polynomial in the other variables. We recognize a special case of the multidimensional cube recurrence as giving explicit equations for the isotropic Grassmannians IG(n-1,2n). Finally, we describe a tropical version of the multidimensional cube recurrence and show that, like the tropical octahedron recurrence, it propagates certain linear inequalities.

Abstract:We prove a conjecture of Gyárfás (1976), which asserts that any family of trees $T_1, \dots, T_{n}$ where each $T_k$ has $k$ vertices packs into $K_n$. We do so by translating the decomposition problem into a labeling problem, namely complete labeling. Our proof employs the polynomial method using a functional reformulation of the conjecture.
