Abstract:We studied the rational realization problem for sub-hyperbolic semi-rational branched coverings. By using the shielding ring lemma, we are able to give a direct proof of CJS’s Theorem following the lines of the proof of Thurston’s Theorem given in the paper of Douady-Hubbard.

Abstract:By means of a nested sequence of some critical pieces constructed by Kozlovski, Shen, and van Strien, and by using a covering lemma recently proved by Kahn and Lyubich, we prove that the Julia set of a polynomial is a Cantor set if and only if each component of the filledin Julia set containing critical points is aperiodic. This result was a conjecture raised by Branner and Hubbard in 1992.

It follows immediately that the Julia set of a polynomial is a Cantor set if and only if each critical component of the filled-in Julia set is aperiodic. This result was a conjecture raised by Branner and Hubbard in 1992.

Abstract:In 1980's, Thurston established a combinatorial characterization for post-critically finite rational maps among post-critically finite branched coverings of the two sphere to itself. A completed proof was written by Douady and Hubbard in their paper [A. Douady, J.H. Hubbard, A proof of Thurston's topological characterization of rational functions, Acta Math. 171 (1993) 263–297]. This criterion was then extended by Cui, Jiang, and Sullivan to sub-hyperbolic rational maps among sub-hyperbolic semi-rational branched coverings of the two sphere to itself. The goal of this paper is to present a new but simpler proof for the combinatorial characterization of sub-hyperbolic rational maps by adapting some arguments in the proof in Douady and Hubbard's paper.

Abstract:William Thurston (1946-2012) gave a combinatorial characterization for generic branched self-coverings of the two-sphere by associating a planar graph to them <a class="link-https link-external" data-doi="10.48550/arXiv.1502.04760" href="https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.1502.04760" rel="external noopener nofollow">https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.1502.04760</a>. By generalizing the notion of local balancing, the author extends the Thurston result to encompass any branched covering of the two-sphere. As an application, we supply a lower bound for the number of equivalence classes of real rational functions for each given ramification profile. Abstract:We prove that the moduli space of rational curves with cyclic action, constructed in our previous work, is realizable as a wonderful compactification of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement in a product of projective spaces. By proving a general result on such wonderful compactifications, we conclude that this moduli space is Chow-equivalent to an explicit toric variety (whose fan can be understood as a tropical version of the moduli space), from which a computation of its Chow ring follows.

Abstract:We develop the theory of Schur covers of finite skew braces. We prove the existence of at least one Schur cover. We also compute several examples. We prove that different Schur covers are isoclinic. Finally, we prove that Schur covers have the lifting property concerning projective representations of skew braces.

Abstract:Bowditch's JSJ tree for splittings over 2-ended subgroups is a quasi-isometry invariant for 1-ended hyperbolic groups which are not cocompact Fuchsian. Our main result gives an explicit, computable "visual" construction of this tree for certain hyperbolic right-angled Coxeter groups. As an application of our construction we identify a large class of such groups for which the JSJ tree, and hence the visual boundary, is a complete quasi-isometry invariant, and thus the quasi-isometry problem is decidable. We also give a direct proof of the fact that among the Coxeter groups we consider, the cocompact Fuchsian groups form a rigid quasi-isometry class. In an appendix, written jointly with Christopher Cashen, we show that the JSJ tree is not a complete quasi-isometry invariant for the entire class of Coxeter groups we consider.

Abstract:This article presents an alternate way to prove a result originally proven by Harvey, Kawamuro, and Plamenvskaya in \cite{HaKaPl}. We accomplish this by explicitly constructing an overtwisted disk in the $p$-fold cyclic branched cover of $S^3$ with the standard contact structure branched along a carefully selected transverse knot. Furthermore, by utilizing this construction of the overtwisted disk, we can see that the overtwisted disk is contained in the complement of the branch locus.

Abstract:The {\it Weierstrass semigroup} of pole orders of meromorphic functions in a point $p$ of a smooth algebraic curve $C$ is a classical object of study; a celebrated problem of Hurwitz is to characterize which semigroups ${\rm S} \subset \mathbb{N}$ with finite complement are {\it realizable} as Weierstrass semigroups ${\rm S}= {\rm S}(C,p)$. In this note, we establish realizability results for cyclic covers $\pi: (C,p) \rightarrow (B,q)$ of hyperelliptic targets $B$ marked in hyperelliptic Weierstrass points; and we show that realizability is dictated by the behavior under $j$-fold multiplication of certain divisor classes in hyperelliptic Jacobians naturally associated to our cyclic covers, as $j$ ranges over all natural numbers.

Abstract:In this short note, we provide an alternative proof of a notable theorem by Narasimhan and Ramanan. The theorem states that the moduli space of $S$-equivalence classes of semistable rank $2$ vector bundles over a curve $X$ of genus $2$ with trivial determinant is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^3$. Our proof relies on a criterion by Bauer and Szemberg, which characterizes projective spaces among smooth Fano varieties using Seshadri constants.

The proof uses recently developed geometric methods for establishing the Farrell-Jones Conjecture by Bartels-Lück-Reich, as well as the structure theory of mapping tori by Dahmani-Krishna.

This criterion generalizes the results previously obtained by Jiang (2004), Pervova-Petronio (2006), Zhu (2019), and Wei-Wu-Xu (2024). As an application of our findings, we introduce several new types of exceptional branching datum.

Abstract:A classical result of von Staudt states that if eight planes osculate a twisted cubic curve and we divide them into two groups of four, then the eight vertices of the corresponding tetrahedra lie on a twisted cubic curve. In the current paper, we give an alternative proof of this result using modern tools, and at the same time we prove the analogous result for rational normal curves in any projective space. This higher dimensional generalization was claimed without proof in a paper of H.S. White in 1921.

Abstract:Greene and Owens explore cubiquitous lattices as an obstruction to rational homology 3-spheres bounding rational homology 4-balls. The purpose of this article is to better understand which sublattices of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ are cubiquitous with the aim of effectively using their cubiquity obstruction. We develop a geometric obstruction (called the Wu obstruction) to cubiquity and use it as tool to completely classify which sublattices with orthogonal bases are cubiquitous. We then apply this result the double branched covers of alternating connected sums of torus links. Finally, we explore how the Wu obstruction can be used in conjunction with contractions to obstruct the cubiquity of infinite families of lattices.

Abstract:We prove that the moduli space of Calabi-Yau 3-folds coming from eight planes of $P^3$ in general positions is not modular. In fact we show the stronger statement that the Zariski closure of the monodromy group is actually the whole $Sp(20,R)$. We construct an interesting submoduli, which we call \emph{hyperelliptic locus}, over which the weight 3 $Q$-Hodge structure is the third wedge product of the weight 1 $Q$-Hodge structure on the corresponding hyperelliptic curve. The non-extendibility of the hyperelliptic locus inside the moduli space of a genuine Shimura subvariety is proved.
