Abstract:In 1980's, Thurston established a combinatorial characterization for post-critically finite rational maps. This criterion was then extended by Cui, Jiang, and Sullivan to sub-hyperbolic rational maps. The goal of this paper is to present a new but simpler proof of this result by adapting the argument in the proof of Thurston's Theorem.

Abstract:In 1980's, Thurston established a combinatorial characterization for post-critically finite rational maps among post-critically finite branched coverings of the two sphere to itself. A completed proof was written by Douady and Hubbard in their paper [A. Douady, J.H. Hubbard, A proof of Thurston's topological characterization of rational functions, Acta Math. 171 (1993) 263–297]. This criterion was then extended by Cui, Jiang, and Sullivan to sub-hyperbolic rational maps among sub-hyperbolic semi-rational branched coverings of the two sphere to itself. The goal of this paper is to present a new but simpler proof for the combinatorial characterization of sub-hyperbolic rational maps by adapting some arguments in the proof in Douady and Hubbard's paper.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a family of rational maps whose Julia sets are Cantor circles and show that every rational map whose Julia set is a Cantor set of circles must be topologically conjugate to one map in this family on their corresponding Julia sets. In particular, we give the specific expressions of some rational maps whose Julia sets are Cantor circles, but they are not topologically conjugate to any McMullen maps on their Julia sets. Moreover, some non-hyperbolic rational maps whose Julia sets are Cantor circles are also constructed.

Abstract:In 1980s, Thurston established a topological characterization theorem for postcritically finite rational maps. In this paper, a decomposition theorem for a class of postcritically infinite branched covering termed Herman map is developed. It's shown that every Herman map can be decomposed along a stable multicurve into finitely many Siegel maps and Thurston maps, such that the combinations and rational realizations of these resulting maps essentially dominate the original one. This result is motivated by a non-expanding version of McMullen's problem, and Thurston's theory on characterization of rational maps. It enables us to prove a Thurston-type theorem for rational maps with Herman rings.
Rational curves on Hermitian manifolds

Abstract: By using analytic method, we prove that there exist rational curves on compact Hermitian manifolds with positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. It confirms a question of S.-T. Yau. It is well-known that Mori proved in \cite{Mori79} that every compact complex manifold $N$ with $c_1(N)>0$ contains at least one rational curve. However, as a borderline example, we show that the standard Hopf surface $S^1\times S^3$ has a Hermitian metric with non-negative holomorphic bisectional curvature (in particular, $c_1(S^1\times S^3)\geq 0$), but it contains no rational curve.

Abstract:We extend Thurston's combinatorial criterion for postcritically finite rational maps to a class of rational maps with bounded type Siegel disks. The combinatorial characterization of this class of Siegel rational maps plays a special role in the study of general Siegel rational maps. As one of the applications, we prove that for any quadratic rational map with a bounded type Siegel disk, the boundary of the Siegel disk is a quasi-circle which passes through one or both of the critical points.

Abstract:Let Vn+1 be an (n + 1)-dimensional real vector space and (F) over tilde = (alpha) over tilde phi(s) s = (beta) over tilde/(alpha) over tilde, be all (alpha, beta)-metric, where (alpha) over tilde is an Euclidean metric and (beta) over tilde is a one form. Minimal surfaces with respect to the Busemann-Hausdorff measure and the Holmes-Thompson measure are called BH-minimal and HT-minimal surfaces, respectively. We give a Bernstein type theorem for minimal graphs in (Vn+1, (F) over tilde) with n <= 7. Let (F) over tilde (b) = (alpha) over tilde phi(s), s = (beta) over tilde/(alpha) over tilde, be a Minkowski metric with b := parallel to(beta) over tilde parallel to(alpha) over tilde. We use a PDE to characterize the BH-minimal and HT-minimal graph over any hyperplane containing the origin in (Vn+1, (F) over tilde (b)). Then we prove that this PDE is an elliptic equation of mean curvature type when b is an element of [0, is an element of) for sonic constant is an element of > 0 and give a Bernstein type theorem for BH-minimal surface in (V-3, (F) over tilde (b)). BH-minimal cones with an isolated singularity at the origin are also given.

Abstract:We study critical orbits and bifurcations within the moduli space M-2 of quadratic rational maps, f : P-1 -> P-1. We focus on the family of curves, Per(1)(lambda) subset of M-2 for lambda is an element of C, defined by the condition that each f is an element of Per(1)(lambda) has a fixed point of multiplier lambda. We prove that the curve Per(1)(lambda) contains infinitely many postcritically finite maps if and only if lambda = 0, addressing a special case of Baker and DeMarco ('Special curves and postcritically finite polynomials', Forum of Math. Pi 1 (2013), doi: 10.1017/fmp.2013.2; Conjecture 1.4). We also show that the two critical points of f define distinct bifurcation measures along Per(1)(lambda).
Classification of critically fixed anti-Thurston maps

Abstract:We provide a complete combinatorial classification of critically fixed anti-Thurston maps, i.e., orientation-reversing branched covers of the 2-sphere that fix every critical point. The first step in the proof, and an interesting result in its own right, is a combinatorial classification of critically fixed anti-rational maps as "Schottky maps" associated to certain plane graphs. Both of these classification results heavily rely on an orientation-reversing version of Thurstons's theory, including the canonical decomposition of anti-Thurston maps, which we develop in this paper. Lastly, we give some applications to the global curve attractor and twisting problems, as well as to anti-rational maps with symmetries and to critically fixed anti-polynomials.

Abstract:Following Douady-Hubbard and Bartholdi-Nekrashevych, we give an algebraic formulation of Thurston's characterization of rational functions. The techniques developed are applied to the analysis of the dynamics on the set of free homotopy classes of simple closed curves induced by a rational function. The resulting finiteness results yield new information on the global dynamics of the pullback map on Teichmüller space used in the proof of the characterization theorem.

Abstract:Every Thurston map on a -sphere induces a pull-back operation on Jordan curves , where is the postcritical set of f. Here the isotopy class (relative to ) only depends on the isotopy class . We study this operation for Thurston maps with four postcritical points. In this case, a Thurston obstruction for the map f can be seen as a fixed point of the pull-back operation. We show that if a Thurston map f with a hyperbolic orbifold and four postcritical points has a Thurston obstruction, then one can 'blow up' suitable arcs in the underlying -sphere and construct a new Thurston map for which this obstruction is eliminated. We prove that no other obstruction arises and so is realized by a rational map. In particular, this allows for the combinatorial construction of a large class of rational Thurston maps with four postcritical points. We also study the dynamics of the pull-back operation under iteration. We exhibit a subclass of our rational Thurston maps with four postcritical points for which we can give positive answer to the global curve attractor problem.

Abstract:An orientation-preserving branched covering map $f\colon S^2 \to S^2$ is called a critically fixed Thurston map if $f$ fixes each of its critical points. It was recently shown that there is an explicit one-to-one correspondence between Möbius conjugacy classes of critically fixed rational maps and isomorphism classes of planar embedded connected graphs. In the paper, we generalize this result to the whole family of critically fixed Thurston maps. Namely, we show that each critically fixed Thurston map $f$ is obtained by applying the blow-up operation, introduced by Kevin Pilgrim and Tan Lei, to a pair $(G,\varphi)$, where $G$ is a planar embedded graph in $S^2$ without isolated vertices and $\varphi$ is an orientation-preserving homeomorphism of $S^2$ that fixes each vertex of $G$. This result allows us to provide a classification of combinatorial equivalence classes of critically fixed Thurston maps. We also develop an algorithm that reconstructs (up to isotopy) the pair $(G,\varphi)$ associated with a critically fixed Thurston map $f$. Finally, we solve some special instances of the twisting problem for the family of critically fixed Thurston maps obtained by blowing up pairs $(G, \mathrm{id}_{S^2})$.

Abstract:We prove that in the moduli space Md of degree d2 rational maps, any hyperbolic component in the disconnectedness locus and of Cantor circle type is a finite quotient of R4d-4-nxTn, where n is determined by dynamics. Abstract:A completely stable multicurve of a post-critically finite rational map induces a combinatorial decomposition. The projections of the small Julia sets are immersed within the original Julia set. We prove that two small Julia sets are disjoint if and only if they are separated by a coiling curve. Furthermore, we prove that a post-critically finite rational map with a coiling curve is renormalizable. Using a similar argument, we give a sufficient condition for a Fatou domain to qualify as a Jordan domain. By tuning polynomails in such a Fatou domain, we provide examples of post-critically finite rational maps with coiling curves.
