Abstract:An orientation-preserving branched covering map $f\colon S^2 \to S^2$ is called a critically fixed Thurston map if $f$ fixes each of its critical points. It was recently shown that there is an explicit one-to-one correspondence between Möbius conjugacy classes of critically fixed rational maps and isomorphism classes of planar embedded connected graphs. In the paper, we generalize this result to the whole family of critically fixed Thurston maps. Namely, we show that each critically fixed Thurston map $f$ is obtained by applying the blow-up operation, introduced by Kevin Pilgrim and Tan Lei, to a pair $(G,\varphi)$, where $G$ is a planar embedded graph in $S^2$ without isolated vertices and $\varphi$ is an orientation-preserving homeomorphism of $S^2$ that fixes each vertex of $G$. This result allows us to provide a classification of combinatorial equivalence classes of critically fixed Thurston maps. We also develop an algorithm that reconstructs (up to isotopy) the pair $(G,\varphi)$ associated with a critically fixed Thurston map $f$. Finally, we solve some special instances of the twisting problem for the family of critically fixed Thurston maps obtained by blowing up pairs $(G, \mathrm{id}_{S^2})$.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on the following aspects:
1. **Classification problem**: The paper aims to classify a special type of Thurston maps, namely critically fixed Thurston maps. Specifically, the authors hope to find a method that can establish a one - to - one correspondence between the combinatorial equivalence classes of such maps and the isomorphism classes of plane - embedded connected graphs. This not only helps to understand the structure of these maps but also provides a basis for further research on their dynamic properties.
2. **Identification problem**: Based on the solution of the classification problem, the paper also explores how to determine the combinatorial equivalence class to which a given critically fixed Thurston map belongs. To this end, the authors developed an algorithm that can gradually simplify the map through the iterative pullback operation and finally determine its corresponding combinatorial model.
3. **Twisting problem**: The paper also studies the twisting problem of critically fixed Thurston maps. Specifically, given a critically fixed Thurston map \( f \) and an orientation - preserving homeomorphism \( \phi \) that keeps the critical points fixed, how to determine the combinatorial equivalence class of the twisted map \( g=\phi\circ f \). The paper proposes a combinatorial operation method based on the charge graph, which can effectively solve this problem.
### Overview of main results
1. **Classification results**:
- **Theorem 1.2**: There exists a canonical one - to - one correspondence that links the combinatorial equivalence classes (or Möbius conjugate classes) of critically fixed rational maps with the isomorphism classes of plane - embedded connected graphs.
- **Main Theorem A**: For all critically fixed Thurston maps (including the cases with obstructions), there exists a canonical one - to - one correspondence that links their combinatorial equivalence classes with the equivalence classes of admissible pairs.
2. **Identification algorithm**:
- **Main Theorem B**: Through the iterative pullback operation, an admissible pair \((G_f,\phi_f)\) related to a given critically fixed Thurston map \( f \) can be found, thereby determining the combinatorial equivalence class of \( f \).
3. **Twisting problem**:
- **Main Theorem C**: For a critically fixed Thurston map \( f \) obtained by the blow - up operation from a pair \((G,\text{id}_{S^2})\), if there exists an essential Jordan curve \( \gamma \), then the combinatorial equivalence class of the twisted map \( T^n_\gamma\circ f \) can be determined by performing an \( n \)-rotation operation on \( G \).
### Methods and techniques
- **Blow - up operation**: This is a special surgical operation used to construct critically fixed Thurston maps from plane - embedded graphs and orientation - preserving homeomorphisms.
- **Pullback operation**: By iteratively applying the pullback operation, the map can be gradually simplified and its combinatorial model can be finally determined.
- **Combinatorial operation**: By performing simple combinatorial operations on the charge graph, the twisting problem can be solved.
These results not only deepen the understanding of critically fixed Thurston maps but also provide new tools and methods for further research on complex dynamic systems.
